This paper investigates two fundamental questions in landscape ecology: what influence does landscape context, or the composition of the matrix, have on an animals’ response to landscape structure, and how does this relationship extrapolate between landscapes? We investigate how the distribution of North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) in the boreal mixedwood forest is influenced by anthropogenically (forest harvest) and naturally (forest fire) derived landscape structure. We studied the presence and absence of red squirrels over two years in three landscape types: one managed for timber harvest, one recently burned by wildfire, and a third unburned unmanaged landscape. Landscape composition and configuration, measured at several spatial scales, predicted red squirrel’s distribution in all three landscapes, but the significant landscape variables changed across spatial scales, across time, and across landscapes. These findings emphasize the variability in landscape structure/animal distribution relationships, and enforce the need to link pattern-finding studies, such as this one, with searches for the mechanisms behind the observed pattern.  相似文献

Caryometric analysis was used for the study of changes in the cell nucleus volume of the neurons of nucleus paraventricularis, nucleus arcuatus, and ependyma of the third cerebral ventricle of sheep after the administration of Gn-RH, followed by exposure to X-rays. The test animals were 12 ewes in physiological anoestrus and two rams. The trials were conducted in spring. The first group of four sheep and two rams were left as controls; in the ewes of the second group the hypothalamo-hypophysial region was irradiated by exposure to 516.5 mC/kg (200 R); in the four ewes of the third group, ovaries were directly irradiated at laparotomy by exposure to 64.4 mC/kg (250 R). The ewes of the second and third group were treated with an i. m. administration of 400 micrograms Gn-RH per head before irradiation. The excisions were collected and processed the tenth day from irradiation. The studied material was fixed by injection of 10% formalin and finished by another dose of 10% formalin after the excision of the brains. The paraffin slices were stained with haematoxylin-eosine. The caryometric analysis was performed at 3000-fold magnification, 200 cells being measured in each sample. Changes in neurosecretory cells were described in the regions of nucleus paraventricularis, nucleus arcuatus and in the ependyma of the third cerebral ventricle. The results of the caryometric analysis of nucleus paraventricularis and nucleus arcuatus suggest that the administration of Gn-RH and irradiation of the hypothalamo-hypophysial region, and direct irradiation of ovaries, stimulate the studied cerebral structures. The changes observed in the ependyma of the third cerebral ventricle after the administration of Gn-RH and subsequent irradiation of the hypothalamo-hypophysial region are insignificant; it is only after the direct irradiation of ovaries that these cells are inhibited by an indirect effect through the feedback mechanism.  相似文献

Carotenoid‐based pigmentation is a striking feature of many taxa, yet the function, if any, of colour traits is often unclear. Pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus, a widely introduced freshwater sunfish that exhibits alternative male mating strategies, express a striking, red operculum spot. To investigate the potential function of this red spot as a signal in this species' mating system, we determined the presence and measured the size of red operculum spots in fish collected from 12 populations in five European countries in which pumpkinseed is an established non‐native species. We subsequently related the presence and size of the red spot to body size and mating strategy, based on an analysis of relative gonad size (gonado‐somatic index, GSI), using a mixed modelling approach. The study demonstrated that the presence of a red operculum spot in pumpkinseed is associated with sexual maturation, with GSI frequency distributions suggesting that cuckolders in some non‐native populations comprised both sneaker and satellite males, the latter not having previously been reported for this species. Further, the size of red spot correlated strongly with body size in parental and cuckolder males, although there was no difference in the presence or size of the red operculum spot between male mating strategies. The function of a red operculum spot in females is not clear but may be partly mediated by pleiotropic genetic mechanisms. Red operculum spots appear to function as signals of male maturation and body size in pumpkinseed, irrespective of mating strategy.  相似文献

All commercial gasoline fuels build up deposits on the spark plugs, injectors, oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, and inside the combustion chamber, which will lower the engine's performance and increase air pollution. As a result, fuel-based detergents have been developed to prevent and remove unwanted deposits. Unfortunately, many of the detergents use high amounts of aromatic solvents, which result in a greater risk of exposure to aromatic compounds like benzene. In this study, car exhaust was analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), as well as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde during engine cleaning service using different chemical cleaners. A special device was designed for sampling from car exhaust using solid phase microextraction. The extracted compounds were analyzed using a gas chromatograph with flame ionization detector. The cleaning products were rated with regard to the amount of pollutants produced during the cleaning service.  相似文献

In the anode side of a two-chamber electrolyzer, electrolysis of a NaCl solution generates acidic electrolyzed oxidizing (EO) water, which exhibits bactericidal effects against a large number of pathogens. This study was undertaken to investigate whether OH radical species are present in EO water or are formed when EO water reacts with iron ions. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) coupled with the spin trapping technique was used for the detection of free radicals. Samples of EO water were collected at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 5 min of electrolysis and immediately mixed with the spin trapping agent 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO). The 5,5-dimethyl-2-hydroxypyrrolidine-N-oxyl (DMPO-OH) spin adduct, characteristic of OH radicals, was not observed. Starting with 2-min electrolysis, a seven-line spectrum characteristic of 5,5-dimethyl-2-pyrrolidone-N-oxyl (DMPOX) was formed. The reactions of EO water with Fe3+ and Fe2+ in the presence of DMPO yielded the spin adduct DMPO-OH. However, the addition of OH radical scavengers (ethanol and methanol) did not generate the characteristic DMPO-alkyl spin adducts. This indicated that the DMPO-OH spectrum was due to a nucleophilic addition of water to DMPO and not to trapping of OH radicals.  相似文献

A variety of thermal approaches are used to estimate sap flux density in stems of woody plants. Models have proved valuable tools for interpreting the behavior of heat pulse, heat balance and heat field deformation techniques, but have seldom been used to describe heat transfer dynamics for the heat dissipation method. Therefore, to better understand the behavior of heat dissipation probes, a model was developed that takes into account the thermal properties of wood, the physical dimensions and thermal characteristics of the probes, and the conductive and convective heat transfer that occurs due to water flow in the sapwood. Probes were simulated as aluminum tubes 20 mm in length and 2 mm in diameter, whereas sapwood, heartwood and bark each had a density and water fraction that determined their thermal properties. Base simulations assumed a constant sap flux density with sapwood depth and no wounding or physical disruption of xylem beyond the 2 mm diameter hole drilled for probe installation. Simulations across a range of sap flux densities showed that the dimensionless quantity k [defined as (ΔT(m) -ΔT)/ΔT, where ΔT(m) is the temperature differential (ΔT) between the heated and unheated probe under zero-flow conditions] was dependent on the thermal conductivity of the sapwood. The relationship between sap flux density and k was also sensitive to radial gradients in sap flux density and to xylem disruption near the probe. Monte Carlo analysis in which 1000 simulations were conducted while simultaneously varying thermal conductivity and wound diameter revealed that sap flux density and k showed considerable departure from the original calibration equation used with this technique. The departure was greatest for variation in sap flux density typical of ring-porous species. Depending on the specific combination of thermal conductivity and wound diameter, use of the original calibration equation resulted in an 81% under- to 48% overestimation of sap flux density at modest flux rates. Future studies should verify these simulations and assess their utility in estimating sap flux density for this widely used technique.  相似文献

This report describes the morphologic, ultrastructural, and immunophenotypic features of a nodular ganglioneuroblastoma in the jejunum of a 13-month-old Holstein-Friesian heifer. On histologic examination, the mass was composed of clusters of neuroblasts and isolated ganglionic neurons in abundant neurophilic matrix that was surrounded by scanty Schwannian stroma. On ultrastructure examination, the large ganglionic neuron-like cells had unmyelinated neurites. Most ganglionic neuron-like tumor cells expressed neurofilament, neuron-specific enolase, chromogranin A, and S-100, whereas the Schwann-cell-like stromal cells expressed S-100 and vimentin. Both brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and tropomyosin-related kinase-B (Trk-B) were expressed in ganglionic neuron-like tumor cells, which suggested the activation or reactivation of an embryonic autocrine BDNF/Trk-B pathway that could have prolonged cell survival and promoted differentiation with neurite formation.  相似文献

During the last decade, a strong case has been made for viewing trees as model systems in plant biology. More recently, forest biologists have argued for the sequencing of the genome of a forest tree. Now, the United States Department of Energy has announced plans for sequencing the genome of the Populus trichocarpa clone, "Nisqually-1." Thus, forest biology is poised to enter an exciting period of scientific discovery. Embracing new technology and new research paradigms, however, is never easy. It is, therefore, timely to ask how tree physiologists will take advantage of the Populus genome data. We contend that the most attractive opportunities will arise through genome-wide research designed to: (1). examine the differences between trees and herbaceous annuals; (2). explore questions relating to the temporal and spatial scales that characterize the life histories and growth of trees; and (3). investigate cause-and-effect relationships that are intractable to conventional research methodologies. To highlight the potential applications of genomics in tree physiology, we briefly discuss each of these approaches.  相似文献
