Long‐term monitoring is critical to determine the stability and sustainability of wildlife populations, and if change has occurred, why. We have followed population density changes in the small mammal community in the boreal forest of the southern Yukon for 46 years with density estimates by live trapping on 3–5 unmanipulated grids in spring and autumn. This community consists of 10 species and was responsible for 9% of the energy flow in the herbivore component of this ecosystem from 1986 to 1996, but this increased to 38% from 2003 to 2014. Small mammals, although small in size, are large in the transfer of energy from plants to predators and decomposers. Four species form the bulk of the biomass. There was a shift in the dominant species from the 1970s to the 2000s, with Myodes rutilus increasing in relative abundance by 22% and Peromyscus maniculatus decreasing by 22%. From 2007 to 2018, Myodes comprised 63% of the catch, Peromyscus 20%, and Microtus species 17%. Possible causes of these changes involve climate change, which is increasing primary production in this boreal forest, and an associated increase in the abundance of 3 rodent predators, marten (Martes americana), ermine (Mustela ermine) and coyotes (Canis latrans). Following and understanding these and potential future changes will require long‐term monitoring studies on a large scale to measure metapopulation dynamics. The small mammal community in northern Canada is being affected by climate change and cannot remain stable. Community and ecosystem changes are happening in the pristine boreal forest ecosystem of the Yukon for 2 reasons. First, climate change is affecting the abiotic environment (temperature, rainfall and growing season) and driving changes in plant productivity and predator–prey interactions. Second, simultaneously change is occurring because of mammal species reintroductions and rewilding. The key ecological question is the impact these faunal changes will have on trophic dynamics. Primary productivity in the boreal forest is increasing because of climatic warming, but plant species composition is unlikely to change significantly during the next 50–100 years. The 9–10‐year population cycle of snowshoe hares will persist but could be reduced in amplitude if winter weather increases predator hunting efficiency. Small rodents have increased in abundance because of increased vegetation growth. Arctic ground squirrels have disappeared from the forest because of increased predator hunting efficiency associated with shrub growth. Reintroductions have occurred for 2 reasons: human reintroductions of large ungulates and natural recolonization of mammals and birds extending their geographic ranges. The deliberate rewilding of wood bison (Bison bison) and elk (Cervus canadensis) has changed the trophic structure of this boreal ecosystem very little. The natural range expansion of mountain lions (Puma concolor), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and American marten (Martes americana) should have few ecosystem effects. Understanding potential changes will require long‐term monitoring studies and experiments on a scale we rarely deem possible. In canine leishmaniosis, the parasitic density of the skin may be important for the infection of sandflies, and increased accumulation of inflammatory cells infected with Leishmania is believed to occur in dermal areas subjected to mechanical trauma. Parasite density and inflammatory responses in the upper and lower dermis of three body sites: flank (control site), dorsal muzzle (sandfly feeding site), and footpads (mechanical stress sites) were thus investigated in 15 dogs with symptomatic leishmaniosis. Parasite density did not differ between the control and tested sites or between the upper and lower dermis, apart from the footpads where it was higher in the upper dermis, and there was no correlation with severity of the macroscopic lesions or inflammatory infiltrate, except for the lower footpad dermis. No selective accumulation of the parasite in the muzzle that would favour its transmission to sandflies occurred, and the mechanical stress imposed on the footpads was not associated with increased parasitic density, or with inflammatory infiltrate. 相似文献

Zygomatic salivary gland disease is not commonly reported in dogs and there is a paucity of literature reporting salivary gland disease secondary to infarction in dogs. A 9-year-old German wirehaired pointer presented with left eye exophthalmos, 3rd eyelid elevation, negative retropulsion, and pain upon opening of the mouth. Computed tomography revealed a mass extending from the left zygomatic salivary gland, consistent with a sialocele. A left-sided zygomatic sialoadenectomy was performed successfully. Histopathologic diagnosis concluded zygomatic salivary gland infarction. The dog had no signs of recurrence 20 mo after surgery.Key clinical message:To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report with long-term outcome of a zygomatic sialocele secondary to salivary gland infarction in a dog treated by zygomatic sialoadenectomy via zygomatic osteotomy. 相似文献

Genetic predisposition to mastitis was studied in 893 dairy cows of the Black Pied Lowland breed, daughters of 19 breeding bulls used in stocks with large-scale production technology and with loose housing, over the years 1980 to 1983. Every cow with positive bacteriological diagnosis or with a clinical manifestation of the disease was considered as suffering from mastitis. High resistance to mastitis was determined in the progeny of AO-4, EM-01, NC-17, NB-10, NEB-15, NUN-3, Nx-33 bulls, while opposite results were recorded in the progeny of NAR-45, NAR-47, NER-01, NOM-19 and REN-100 bulls. Higher milk efficiency, by 9 to 408 litres of milk was observed in positive dairy cows in the years of study. The coefficient of heritability (h2) is 0.3032. It can be concluded that the systematic control of cows from the aspect of suitability for large-scale production technology and resistance to mastitis, and evaluation of bulls according to predisposition of their daughters to this disease, is very favourable in view of the prophylaxy of bovine mastitis. 相似文献

The ependyma in the infundibular region of the third cerebral ventricle was studied. Ageline sponges (20 mg per animal) were applied to nine ewes. On the thirteenth day after the removal of sponges, 750 I. U. PMSG was administered intramuscularly to three ewes, 1000 I. U. PMSG to another three, and the remaining three ewes were left without this treatment. Six ewes were the control. After embedding in paraffin, the material obtained from four control sheep and all the test sheep was stained with haematoxylin-eosine, material from another two control animals was impregnated by the method after Golgi-Cox. The ependyma in the infundibular region of anoestric ewes has a single layer and is cubic to cylindrical; it is only in the recessus infundibuli that it forms two to four layers. After the administration of Ageline, or in combination with PMSG, ependyma can be observed to react within the whole infundibular region of the third cerebral ventricle, but the most expressive reaction is recorded in the caudal part of the middle third of infundibulum where a transient type of cells (between ependymal cells and tanycytes) was found in the control animals after impregnation (they have cilia and one to two short and one long processes). After Ageline administration, ependymal cells in the middle third stretch out like in the anoestric period. The administration of 20 mg Ageline and 750 I. U. PMSG gave rise to low digital excrescences, the ependyma is undulated (pseudo-stratified) or contains small deposits of multiplied cells. After the administration of 20 mg Ageline and 1000 I. U. PMSG, the middle third contained, besides subependymal serous infiltrate, also large digital excrescences, probably filled with a serous fluid, and the surface of the subependyma and ependyma is eroded, containing proliferated deposits of ependymal cells of different thickness. Everywhere proliferation occurs, the surface layer of ependymocytes is desquamated into the cerebrospinal fluid. The histological picture described in the present paper probably suggests an increased secretory activity of ependymal cells after the administration of hormonal preparations. Physiological acclimation and genotypic adaptation to prevailing temperatures may influence forest responses to future climatic warming. We examined photosynthetic and respiratory responses of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) from two portions of the species' range for evidence of both phenomena in a laboratory study with seedlings. A field study was also conducted to assess the impacts of temperature acclimation on saplings subjected to an imposed temperature manipulation (4 degrees C above ambient temperature). The two seedling populations exhibited more evidence of physiological acclimation to warming than of ecotypic adaptation, although respiration was less sensitive to short-term warming in the southern population than in the northern population. In both seedling populations, thermal compensation increased photosynthesis by 14% and decreased respiration by 10% in the warm-acclimated groups. Saplings growing in open-top field chambers at ambient temperature and 4 degrees C above ambient temperature showed evidence of temperature acclimation, but photosynthesis did not increase in response to the 4 degrees C warming. On the contrary, photosynthetic rates measured at the prevailing chamber temperature throughout three growing seasons were similar, or lower (12% lower on average) in saplings maintained at 4 degrees C above ambient temperature compared with saplings maintained at ambient temperature. However, the long-term photosynthetic temperature optimum for saplings in the field experiment was higher than it was for seedlings in either the 27 or the 31 degrees C growth chamber. Respiratory acclimation was also evident in the saplings in the field chambers. Saplings had similar rates of respiration in both temperature treatments, and respiration showed little dependence on prevailing temperature during the growing season. We conclude that photosynthesis and respiration in sugar maple have the potential for physiological acclimation to temperature, but exhibit a low degree of genetic adaptation. Some of the potential for acclimation to a 4 degrees C increase above a background of naturally fluctuating temperatures may be offset by differences in water relations, and, in the long term, may be obscured by the inherent variability in rates under field conditions. Nevertheless, physiologically based models should incorporate seasonal acclimation to temperature and permit ecotypic differences to influence model outcomes for those species with high genetic differentiation between regions. 相似文献

Nine dairy cows aged four to eleven years were subjected to examination by chromosomal analysis. These cows had been found, by haematological examination, to suffer from leucosis. The study also covered one ten-day-old calf - heifer. The test group included two dam-daughter pairs. The animals belonged to the Black-Pied Lowland breed. The blood was sampled from vena jugularis and the karyotypes were processed and evaluated by the method after Moorhead et al. (1960), modified by Lojda et al. (1974). A list was kept for each animal. The tested animals were included in classes by the percentages of the chromosome aberrations: class I - two animals (up to 10% of aberrations), class II - seven animals (from 10% to 20% of aberrations), class III - one animal (above 20% of aberrations). Hyposomy was found in all cases, polysomy and hyperploidy in four cases. Structural aberrations were observed in nine cases, breaks being the most frequent anomalies (7 cases). Breaks on sexual chromosomes were observed in five cases, including the dam-daughter pairs; centric fusion occurred in one case and mixed aberrations in two cases. 相似文献

In the cytogenetic study of karyotypes of breeding bulls and cows aimed at their health and at the hereditary defects in offspring the lymphocytes from the peripheral blood from the jugular vein were employed. On the basis of the percentual evaluation of numerical and structural deviations in karyotypes the following criteria were established: the animals with deviations up to 10%--Ist class, with deviations from 10 to 20%--IInd class, with deviations over 20%--IIIrd class. From 17 breeding bulls of the first group two were included in the Ist class, twelve in the IInd class and three in the IIIrd class. From the second group, two sires belonged to the IInd class and four to the IIIrd class. Both dairy cows (mothers) that delivered calves with lethal factors, as well as the leukosis-suffering mother with daughter, were included in the IIIrd class.
