Legumes symbioses: absence of Nod genes in photosynthetic bradyrhizobia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Leguminous plants (such as peas and soybeans) and rhizobial soil bacteria are symbiotic partners that communicate through molecular signaling pathways, resulting in the formation of nodules on legume roots and occasionally stems that house nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Nodule formation has been assumed to be exclusively initiated by the binding of bacterial, host-specific lipochito-oligosaccharidic Nod factors, encoded by the nodABC genes, to kinase-like receptors of the plant. Here we show by complete genome sequencing of two symbiotic, photosynthetic, Bradyrhizobium strains, BTAi1 and ORS278, that canonical nodABC genes and typical lipochito-oligosaccharidic Nod factors are not required for symbiosis in some legumes. Mutational analyses indicated that these unique rhizobia use an alternative pathway to initiate symbioses, where a purine derivative may play a key role in triggering nodule formation.  相似文献

Natural killer (NK) cells were originally defined as effector lymphocytes of innate immunity endowed with constitutive cytolytic functions. More recently, a more nuanced view of NK cells has emerged. NK cells are now recognized to express a repertoire of activating and inhibitory receptors that is calibrated to ensure self-tolerance while allowing efficacy against assaults such as viral infection and tumor development. Moreover, NK cells do not react in an invariant manner but rather adapt to their environment. Finally, recent studies have unveiled that NK cells can also mount a form of antigen-specific immunologic memory. NK cells thus exert sophisticated biological functions that are attributes of both innate and adaptive immunity, blurring the functional borders between these two arms of the immune response.  相似文献

In sexual reproduction of most animals, the spermatozoon provides DNA and centrioles, together with some cytoplasm and organelles, to the oocyte that is being fertilized. Paternal mitochondria and their genomes are generally eliminated in the embryo by an unknown degradation mechanism. We show that, upon fertilization, a Caenorhabditis elegans spermatozoon triggers the recruitment of autophagosomes within minutes and subsequent paternal mitochondria degradation. Whereas the nematode-specific sperm membranous organelles are ubiquitinated before autophagosome formation, the mitochondria are not. The degradation of both paternal structures and mitochondrial DNA requires an LC3-dependent autophagy. Analysis of fertilized mouse embryos shows the localization of autophagy markers, which suggests that this autophagy event is evolutionarily conserved to prevent both the transmission of paternal mitochondrial DNA to the offspring and the establishment of heteroplasmy.  相似文献

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: blood transfusions are a potentially life-saving procedure that are within the reach of most small animal practitioners. Only minimal equipment is required. PATIENT GROUP: any cat with clinical signs attributable to a reduced red blood cell mass that is affecting oxygen transport (as a result of reduced packed cell volume or acute blood loss) is a potential candidate for a transfusion. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: although the principles of transfusion medicine are not complicated, there can be fatal consequences if certain steps are omitted. DIAGNOSTICS: blood typing kits and blood filters are readily available from veterinary wholesalers, laboratories and blood banking services. EVIDENCE BASE: over the past three decades, a substantial body of clinical research and reports has built up covering feline blood types and transfusion medicine. This article draws on that research to provide clinical guidance aimed at all veterinarians in feline or small animal practice who either currently practise transfusion medicine or plan to do so.  相似文献

Mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) is a resilient pelagic species that could provide long-term highly productive fisheries. Using FAO data we document enormous increases (746%) in reported global mahi-mahi landings since 1950. Detailed mahi-mahi fisheries records are limited, but an observer program monitoring Costa Rica’s Pacific mahi-mahi pelagic longline fleet between 1999 and 2008 (n = 217 sets) provided a rare opportunity to quantify bycatch in these fisheries. Several sea turtles and sharks of global conservation concern were caught incidentally: olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea; n = 1348, mean = 9.05 per 1000 hooks), silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis; n = 402, mean = 2.96 per 1000 hooks), thresher sharks (Alopias sp.; n = 158, mean = 1.12 per 1000 hooks), green turtle (Chelonia mydas; n = 49, mean = 0.35 per 1000 hooks), and three other threatened sharks in small numbers. Pelagic stingray (Pteroplatytrygon violacea; a ray of low conservation concern) was also a common bycatch (n = 625, mean = 4.77 per 1000 hooks). Generalized linear models (GLMs) of catch rates showed increases in olive ridley turtles and decreases in mahi-mahi and silky sharks over the decade examined. The high hooking survival rates of olive ridley and green turtles in observed sets (95% and 96% respectively) suggest that widespread training of the fleet in careful gear removal and turtle release methods could be one effective bycatch mitigation strategy for these species. GLMs also provide evidence that closing the fishery during peak olive ridley nesting times (at least near nesting beaches), in combination with reduced gear soak times, could help minimize the fishery’s impacts on threatened bycatch species while still maintaining a productive fishery.  相似文献

Introduction   

Because of its vigorous growth, poplar can play an important role for sustainable production of woody biomass to cover renewable energy needs. Hence, the selection of suitable genotypes has to be based on relevant traits, among which intrinsic water use efficiency (W i, estimated through leaf carbon isotope discrimination, Δ) may be a key trait. Besides a large genetic variation in Δ among the frequently planted poplar hybrids, the use of Δ in deployment or breeding programmes requires insights in the robustness of the genotype ranking for Δ across environments and years.  相似文献

Microbial‐community structure is closely associated with plant‐community composition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of depth and revegetation time on the microbial‐community structure of restored grassland soils of the Loess Plateau of China. Microbial‐community structure at 0–10 cm (depth 1) and 10–20 cm (depth 2) of eight sites of a grassland chronosequence with revegetation time ranging from 1 to 78 y was determined using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Except for the youngest site microbial‐community structure at the two depths varied distinctly with actinomycetes and vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza as the most important discriminators. Total PLFA content decreased with depth and increased with revegetation time. Protozoa were the only functional group whose proportion did not change with depth. Their relative abundance tended to decrease with increasing revegetation time. The microbial community at all sites was bacteria‐dominated with Gram‐negative bacteria representing the largest proportion. Principal‐component and cluster analysis revealed that microbial‐community structure in the surface soil (depth 1) of the older sites (23–78 y of revegetation) was rather similar which may be due to only small effects of the plant species present on the soil environment. Differences in microbial‐community composition at 0–20 cm depth of the eight sites were partly related to variations in the physico‐chemical characteristics. Relations to organic C, alkali‐extractable N, pH, and available P were found. Revegetation of former agricultural sites on the Loess Plateau improves the soil status and leads to shifts in microbial‐community structure more pronounced with depth than time.  相似文献
