Abstract This study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of dietary thyme Thymus vulgaris, rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis, and fenugreek Trigonella foenum graecum as feed additives on total liver fat levels and biometric indices of Sea Bass Dicentrarchus labrax. Four isonitrogenous (48% crude protein) and isocaloric (21 kJ/g) diets were formulated to contain 0% (control), or 1% of thyme, rosemary, or fenugreek. In a 45-d feeding trial, 12 fiberglass tanks (140 L) were each stocked with 17 fish (20.43 ± 0.03 g). Herbal supplemented diets significantly decreased the total liver fat, visceral fat index, viscerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, and increased the spleen–somatic index and bile–somatic index (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the results indicated that a dietary level of 1.0% for thyme, rosemary, or fenugreek could improve some of the physiological parameters of Sea Bass. Thus, this work provides a new perspective for the use of medicinal herbs that can be added to fish feed to improve the status of fish organs. Thyme, rosemary, and fenugreek contain a number of different active components, which possibly play an important role in improving these conditions, but the mechanism by which this is achieved needs further and more detailed study. The present study investigated the effects of dietary allspice powder supplementation on welfare status of Tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus assessed by hemato‐immunological and serum biochemical parameters. Five diets were formulated to contain 0 (control), 5, 10, 15 or 20 g of allspice kg?1 of fish feed. Fish were fed experimental diets for 60 days. Supplementation of allspice powder at 10 g kg?1 positively influenced the serum glucose, plasma lysozyme activity and myeloperoxidase activity. Dietary allspice powder at 15 g kg?1 also positively influenced the serum biochemical parameters (total protein, albumin and globulin) and plasma lysozyme activity. However, 20 g kg?1 allspice powder group had significantly lower values of respiratory burst activity and red blood cell count than other experimental groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that supplementation of allspice powder at 10 or 15 g kg?1 for 60 days, had beneficial effects on improvement of some immunological and serum biochemical status of O. mossambicus. These findings suggest that dietary supplementation of allspice powder might further improve the resistance to fish pathogens. 相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of combination of dietary Bacillus subtilis and trans‐cinnamic acid on serum biochemical parameters, innate immune responses and resistance of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss to Yersinia ruckeri. Six experimental groups of fish with mean weights of 20.58 ± 0.35 g were used in the study. Five experimental groups of fish were fed diets containing Bacillus subtilis (107 per gram) or a mix of the Bacillus subtilis (BS) and trans‐cinnamic acid (25 mg/kg‐25trcBS, 50 mg/kg‐50trcBS, 75 mg/kg‐75 trcBS, 150 mg/kg‐150 trcBS), whereas an additive‐free basal diet served as the control (Cont). In this study, an increase was observed in granulocyte percentage, respiratory burst activity, phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, myeloperoxidase activity and total antiprotease activity especially in fish fed with mix of the BS and trans‐cinnamic acid‐supplemented diets (p < .05). Moreover, at the end of the 20‐day challenge period the survival rates and antibody titre (p < .05), and relative per cent survival were higher in the BS group and all trcBS groups compared with control group. As a conclusion, the results in the present study show that feeding rainbow trout with diets containing a mix of B. subtilis and trans‐cinnamic acid over a 60‐day period might be sufficient for improving fish immune responses and disease resistance against Y. ruckeri. 相似文献

Human‐generated noises are considered as underwater sound pollution with potential short‐ or long‐term impacts on behavioural responses and physiological reaction of aquatic living organisms. Few investigations are available so far on long‐term influences of impulsive and continuous sound sources on physiological response of fish. In the present study, opercula beat rates and pectoral wing rates were monitored as a physiological stress response of ventilation in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to long‐term repeated and continued sounds generated from underwater construction work. Fish responded to underwater sound treatment with significantly increased opercula beat—and pectoral wing movements. Maximum ventilation rate was observed as a startle response of fish at initial exposure to underwater sound. The ventilation rates remained at high levels over the first 4 weeks and showed a declining trend thereafter. Fish growth was almost stable for the first 4 weeks, but shifted forward from day 45 onwards. We found strong evidence that fish could attune to repeated playbacks of underwater noise exposures since we found higher specific growth rates for the sound exposed fish from day 45 onwards until day 120, a so‐called ‘catch‐up growth endeavour’. 相似文献

Multiple shoot formation from the plumular apices excised from mature embryos of cowpea cv. Akkiz was obtained after pulse treatment with 10 mg/l BAP for 5 days followed by culture on MS medium containing 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00, 1.25 mg/l BAP – with or without 0.10 mg/l NAA. Callus induction and shoot regeneration was recorded on all cultures containing BAP with or without NAA. However, inclusion of 0.1 mg/l NAA had positive effect on callus diameter and shoot length. Maximum mean number of 7.11 shoots per explant were obtained on MS medium containing 1.00 mg/l BAP. Longer shoots were recorded on MS medium containing various concentration of BAP+ 0.1 mg/l NAA compared to those containing various concentrations of BAP singly. All shoots cultured on MS medium containing 1 mg/l BAP were rooted on MS medium containing 0.50 mg/l IBA. Rooted plants were acclimatized at room temprature in soil contained in pots. All plants flowered and set seeds in the greenhouse after 3 months. 相似文献

This study was designed to reveal impregnation ability and to enhance leaching resistance of boron from borate-treated wood. Vapor boron treatment was applied in compressed and uncompressed states at high temperatures such as 180 and 200°C for 6, 8 and 15 min. Following ten-cycle leaching periods, amounts of boron leached from vapor boron treated wood was measured by ion chromatography. According to the results, boric acid can be vaporized under heat and can be impregnated into wood. Success of the technique can be increased by increasing vapor pressure in a closed chamber. Leachability results proved the boron vaporization along with water vapor at various ratios depends on the process variables. These results have importance on dry wood treatment under heat by boron vapor with a little water presence which does not necessitate a further drying process. 相似文献

Furfuryl alcohol has a sufficiently small molecular size, which allows impregnation into wood and can be polymerized in the cell walls. Polymerization can be accomplished using a catalyst, heat or penetrating radiation. This research illustrates a natural wood polymer composite (NWPC) that was obtained under the catalytic effect of borates. Furfuryl alcohol (FA) and borates were mixed at different ratios before treatment. When borates alone are used, they were totally leached from wood after cyclic leaching periods. However, this was not encountered with the mixture of furfuryl alcohol and borates. Furfuryl alcohol considerably improved antiswelling efficiency by about 85% for both Japanese cedar ( Cryptomeria japonica) and Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) wood specimens. Results of the leaching tests of borate indicated that boric acid readily lost its boron content in the early cycles of the leaching periods and the highest leaching rate of boron was observed at the first leaching cycle (512 ppm). When furfuryl alcohol mixed with borates, boron was released to the leaching water at slower amounts, suggesting the possibility of longer protection of treated wood in service. 相似文献

AbstractAllspice Pimenta dioica as a feed additive was studied for its effects on growth performance and disease resistance in Mozambique Tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. Five isonitrogenous (36% crude protein) and isocaloric (18.5 kJ/g) diets were formulated to contain 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, or 20 g of allspice/kg of fish feed. In a 50-d feeding trial, 15 plastic tanks (21 L) were stocked with 35 fish fry (0.012 g) each. After the feeding trial, fish were exposed to Streptococcus iniae and mortalities were recorded. The second-order polynomial regression indicated that the dietary allspice level of 10 g/kg provided the best growth performance and feed utilization. The greatest survival after pathogen challenge was also obtained from the diet supplemented with allspice at 10 g/kg. Therefore, allspice acts as a growth promoter to improve feed utilization and weight gain in Mozambique Tilapia fry and acts an antimicrobial agent to enhance disease resistance during first feeding of fry. These results suggest that allspice can be used as an alternative to antibiotics in controlling streptococcal disease in tilapia culture.Received October 19, 2012; accepted January 20, 2014 相似文献
