Gas-exchange and biomass growth was measured on barley plants sprayed with glyphosate in order to investigate what might cause the growth increase observed in low dose glyphosate treated plants. Gas-exchange over 7 days after spraying was measured together with photosynthesis/irradiance and photosynthesis/CO2 curves. In addition, growth experiments at 100, 200, 400 and 800 ppm CO2 were conducted. Dark respiration rates increased in response to the glyphosate treatment, but so did photosynthesis at doses of 11-45 g a.e. ha−1. The increase in photosynthetic rates was mainly due to an increased efficiency of CO2 fixation under irradiance and CO2 saturated conditions. The photosynthesis measurements were confirmed by the growth experiments, where glyphosate growth stimulations were observed only at 400 and 800 ppm CO2. It can, hence, be concluded that low glyphosate doses can stimulate photosynthesis, though the causes behind this increase is still not understood.  相似文献

Plant roots are generally considered to decompose slower than shoots and contribute more to accumulation of soil organic matter, and management history is expected to shape the structure and function of decomposer communities in soil. Here we study the effect of chemical characteristics of shoots and roots from fodder radish (Raphanus sativus oleiformis L.), a widely used cover crop, on the release of their C and N after addition to soil. Shoots and roots were incubated for 180?d at 20°C using four soils with different management histories (organic versus mineral fertiliser, with and without use of cover crops), and the release of CO2 and extractable mineral N was determined. More shoot C than root C was mineralised during the first 10?d of incubation. After 180?d, 58% of the C input was mineralised with no difference between shoots and roots. At the end of incubation, shoots had released more N (42% of shoot N) than roots (28% of root N). Moreover, management history did not affect net mineralisation of added plant C. Residues incubated in soil with a management history involving cover crops showed an enhanced net N mineralisation. Therefore, long-term decomposition of C added in radish shoots and roots is unaffected by differences in chemical characteristics or soil management history. However, the net mineralisation of N in shoots is faster than for N in roots, and net N mineralisation of added materials is higher in soil with than without a history of cover crops.

Copepods are considered high quality live feed for fish larvae due to their large within species size span, swimming pattern triggering hunting behaviour, and complete biochemical profile. In a continuous cultivation system aiming at the planktonic calanoid Acartia tonsa an intruding harpacticoid frequently appears. We experimentally evaluate how the interaction from the semi‐benthic Tisbe holothuriae is affecting our cultures and ask whether the two copepod‐species are expected to pose competitive exclusion or co‐exist long‐term. This is pursued by establishing ~40 days mono‐ and mixed copepod cultures reared in a stationary setup (S) theoretically advantageous for T. holothuriae and a rotating setup (R) with organisms kept in suspension by use of a plankton wheel, theoretically advantageous for A. tonsa. The carrying capacities of A. tonsa in either mono‐ or mixed cultures are not affected whether the copepods are subject to S or R treatment. Only exception is the S‐setup containing mixed culture were A. tonsa obtains a significantly lower carrying capacity compared with A. tonsa alone in R‐setup. The mono‐ and mixed cultures of T. holothuriae are, however, highly negatively affected by the R setup compared with S setup. A long‐term solution to limit the presence of T. holothuriae is to apply turbulence level in a classical stagnant tank setup to an extend that suppress T. holothuriae and simultaneously allow algae in suspension as food for A. tonsa, make their eggs sediment as well as minimize risk of benthic‐predation on eggs.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to quantify the effects of roe deer browsing relative to the effects of soil preparation, shelterwood density (light) and seed fall. Ultimately, the goal was better silvicultural guidelines to support the use of natural beech regeneration in the close-to-nature forestry context. In spring 1995, an experiment on natural regeneration with three experimental stands (0.28–0.6 ha) was installed in a beech (Fagus sylvatica) dominated broadleaved forest inhabited by a dense roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) population (24 deer km−2). The autumn of 1995 offered a large beech mast (stand average 307–1168 beechnuts m−2).Treatments installed included fencing to exclude deer, soil preparation, shelterwood thinning, and the relevant control treatments. Roe deer and soil preparation had dramatic effects on regeneration from the moment the seedlings sprouted in the spring 1996. The regeneration sprouted only sparsely in the unprepared seedbed producing only 5 seedlings m−2 (average across fence treatments) after 2 months, which was reduced to 1 sapling m−2 8 years later. Deer had no significant effect on the regeneration density of the unprepared seedbed. In contrast, the cultivated seedbeds produced initially (after 2 months) up to 191 seedlings m−2 protected by fence, whereas the densities in the unfenced treatments peaked by 22 seedlings m−2. By the end of the study, these densities were reduced to 22 saplings m−2 in the permanently fenced mineral soil seedbed and to 2 saplings m−2 in the unfenced mineral soil seedbed. Regeneration height outside the permanent fence was generally only half the height of the regeneration inside. Additionally, we found significantly positive effects of increasing light and seed fall on regeneration density and of light on regeneration growth.We conclude that the roe deer only reduced the regeneration density of the dense regenerations established in the cultivated seedbeds. However, the regeneration density of the unprepared seedbed was not sufficient to support a future high quality stand. We found no treatment that within the timeframe of this study could support successful regeneration establishment outside the permanent fences. Whether this will change in the future with more time given for the regeneration to establish is yet to be revealed.  相似文献

In the field of fish diseases, the amount of relevant information available is enormous. Internet‐based databases are an excellent tool for keeping track of the available knowledge in the field. Fishpathogens.eu was launched in June 2009 with the aim of collecting, storing and sorting data on fish pathogens. The first pathogen to be included was the rhabdovirus, viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV). Here, we present an extension of the database to also include infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV). The database is developed, maintained and managed by the European Community Reference Laboratory for Fish Diseases and collaborators. It is available at http://www.fishpathogens.eu/ihnv .  相似文献

Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV‐3) is the aetiological agent of a serious infective, notifiable disease affecting common carp and varieties. In survivors, infection is generally characterized by a subclinical latency phase with restricted viral replication. The CyHV‐3 genome is difficult to detect in such carrier fish that represent a potential source of dissemination if viral reactivation occurs. In this study, the analytical and diagnostic performance of an alternative serum neutralization (SN) method based on the detection of CyHV‐3‐specific antibodies was assessed using 151 serum or plasma samples from healthy and naturally or experimentally CyHV‐3‐infected carp. French CyHV‐3 isolate 07/108b was neutralized efficiently by sera from carp infected with European, American and Taiwanese CyHV‐3 isolates, but no neutralization was observed using sera specific to other aquatic herpesviruses. Diagnostic sensitivity, diagnostic specificity and repeatability of 95.9%, 99.0% and 99.3%, respectively, were obtained, as well as a compliance rate of 89.9% in reproducibility testing. Neutralizing antibodies were steadily detected in infected carp subjected to restrictive or permissive temperature variations over more than 25 months post‐infection. The results suggest that this non‐lethal diagnostic test could be used in the future to improve the epidemiological surveillance and control of CyHV‐3 disease.  相似文献

Hexaploid wheat genotypes from north-western Europe show low responses to current anther culture techniques. This phenomenon was investigated on 145 north-western European wheat lines. Twenty-seven lines from eastern Europe were included to observe the response pattern of wheat from an area, where the technique has been used successfully. On average, eastern European wheat lines produced 3.6 green plants per 111 anthers, while only 1.4 green plants per 111 anthers were obtained in north-western European lines. This difference was due to the high capacity for embryo formation among the eastern European lines, while the ability to regenerate green plants was widespread in both germplasm groups. Isolated wheat microspore culture performed on 85 of these wheat lines gave an average 3.7-fold increase in green plants per anther compared with the anther culture response. The increased recovery of green plants was due to improved plant regeneration and increased green plant percentage from embryos derived from isolated microspore culture.  相似文献
