SUMMARY Clinical, diagnostic and biochemical features of generalised glycogenosis are described In 96 Brahman-type calves. Typically the calves were presented when about 6 months of age, with III-thrift and muscular weakness as the most common signs. Acidic α-glucosidase activity was reduced in peripheral blood lymphocytes and skeletal muscle. Muscle glycogen concentration was consistently higher in affected animals than In clinically normal cattle. Other observations in affected calves Included elevation of serum aspartate amlnotransferase and creatine kinase activities and excessive amounts of high molecular weight oligosaccharides in urine. Fine cytoplasmic vacuolation of neurones In the brain and spinal cord, skeletal muscle, myocardlum and of Purkinje fibres were consistent histological observations. Periodic acid-Schlff staining revealed the presence of glycogen-like material In peripheral blood lymphocytes of all affected calves, Indicating that this is a useful aid for the diagnosis of glycogenosis. While 3 of the 96 calves showed somewhat different clinical signs, the similarity of pathology and the biochemical and clinical evidence in the remainder suggested that, In these animals, the disease was expressed as a single syndrome. 相似文献

SUMMARY The diagnostic performance of plasma tests for muscle enzymes was measured in sheep from flocks affected by clinical and sub-clinical nutritional myopathy. Parallel combinations of tests for creatine kinase (CK), alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase had higher diagnostic sensitivity than CK alone. The enzymes ALT and AST showed the highest correlation with the degree of muscle damage. A parallel combination of tests for plasma CK and ALT as well as tests for plasma α-tocopherol and red cell glutathione peroxidase are recommended for the diagnosis of nutritional myopathy and a decision on the appropriate treatment. The number of false negative results based on a diagnosis from the microscopic examination of single muscles was higher than for the parallel combination of tests. The number of false negatives was highest for the vastus intermedius and lowest for the tensor fascia lata. Diagnosis using a panel of blood tests has the advantages of overcoming problems of inadequate muscle sampling, a larger number of sheep in the flock can be tested and a more rapid diagnosis can be obtained. 相似文献

The effectiveness of a homologous series of biodegradable rapeseed oil derivatives (triglyceride ethoxylates; Agnique RSO series containing an average of 5, 10, 30 and 60 units of ethylene oxide (EO) as adjuvants for foliage-applied, water-soluble, systemic active ingredients was evaluated employing glyphosate as an example. Previous experiments had revealed that the surfactants used are not phytotoxic at concentrations ranging from 1 to 10 g litre-1. The experiments were performed using Phaseolus vulgaris L and nine selected weed species, grown in a growth chamber at 25/20 (+/- 2) degrees C day/night temperature and 40/70 (+/- 10)% relative humidity. The surfactants were evaluated for enhancement of spray retention, and foliar penetration biological efficacy of glyphosate. Glyphosate was applied at a concentration of 43 mM. The surfactants were added at concentrations of 1 g litre-1. The commercial glyphosate 360 g AE litre-1 SL Roundup Ultra and unformulated glyphosate served as references. The surfactants used improved spray retention, foliar penetration and biological efficacy. Some of the formulations were comparable to the performance of Roundup Ultra in the aspects evaluated; some were even more effective in enhancing spray liquid retention and promoting glyphosate phytotoxicity in several plant species. Macrolophus pygmaeus is an omnivore insect with beneficial characteristics because of its good feeding performance and broad host range. However, disadvantages for its use are the high purchase and rearing costs. Labortary experimants showed that the breeding of this predatory bug is also possible with the eggs of Artemia sp. The objective of the present study therefore was to test Artemia sp. cysts as a food alternative for Macrolophus pygmaeus under practical conditions. For this purpose, a population of this bug was grown in glasshouse departments of the Research Center for Horticulture in Straelen, Germany. Three glasshouse compartments served as control treatments and were fed with E. kuehniella; the other three compartments were fed with cysts of Artemia sp. The population of M. pygmaeus, that has been raised with Artemia sp., turned out to be significantly smaller than the control. In this greenhouse trial, Artemia sp. cysts turned out to be an unsuitable alternative, because no stable and powerful population of M. pygmaeus could be established. However, this trial has been conducted under real practice conditions in the greenhouse, where because of the complexity of the system further research is needed to identify the specific reasons or factors of influence being responsible for the different outcome of experiments conducted under lab and practice conditions. 相似文献

Objectives were to evaluate effects of feeding a calcium salt rich in linoleic and trans -octadecenoic acids (LTFA) on synthesis of prostaglandin F2α based on its metabolite (PGFM), uterine involution and pregnancy rates in lactating dairy cows. Five hundred and eleven Holstein cows were blocked according to parity, body condition score and milk yield in the previous lactation. Primiparous and multiparous cows were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments consisting of calcium salt (2% diet dry matter) of either palm oil (PO) or LTFA from 25 days prepartum to 80 days of lactation. Cows were time-inseminated at 70 ± 3 days postpartum. Feeding LTFA tended (p = 0.08) to decrease the incidence of puerperal metritis (15.1% vs 8.8%). Primiparous cows supplemented with LTFA showed larger increase in plasma PGFM concentration at day 1 postpartum (17018 vs 6897 p m ). Pregnancy rate after first insemination tended (p = 0.07) to be greater at 27 days after insemination (37.9% vs 28.6%), and was greater (p = 0.05) at 41 days after insemination (35.5% vs 25.8%) for cows fed LTFA compared with PO. These results indicate that unsaturated fatty acids fed in a rumen inert form have the potential to modulate reproductive events and improve pregnancy rates in lactating dairy cows. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Typical active ingredient (AI) residue patterns are formed during droplet drying on plant surfaces owing to the interaction of spray solution characteristics and leaf micromorphology. Currently, comparatively little is known about the influence of AI deposit patterns within a spray droplet residue area on the penetration and biological efficacy of glyphosate. A scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X‐ray microanalysis has been used to characterise residue patterns and to quantify the area ultimately covered by glyphosate within the droplet spread area. RESULTS: The easy‐to‐wet weed species Stellaria media L. and Viola arvensis L., as well as the difficult‐to‐wet Chenopodium album L. and Setaria viridis L., differing in their surface micromorphology, have been used. Rapeseed oil ethoxylates (RSO 5 or RSO 60) were added to glyphosate solutions to provide different droplet spread areas. Addition of RSO 5 enhanced droplet spread area more than RSO 60, and both caused distinct glyphosate residue patterns. The biological efficacy of treatment solutions showed no significant correlation with the area ultimately covered by glyphosate. CONCLUSION: The results have implications on herbicide uptake models. This study shows that droplet spread area does not correspond to the area ultimately covered by glyphosate, and that the latter does not affect glyphosate phytotoxicity. To determine whether there is a day-to-day variation in insulin sensitivity in cats, we subjected six clinically normal cats to four insulin-modified frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance tests (FSIVGTTs) over 7 days. The insulin-modified FSIVGTTs were analysed by the minimal model method. Minimal model insulin sensitivity (S(I)) averaged 2.9+/-0.4 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml (range 1.9-4.6 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml), with a mean interday coefficient of variation (CV) of 35.4+/-6.4% (range 12.8-58.5%). Glucose effectiveness (S(G)) averaged 0.029+/-0.002 min(-1)(range 0.024-0.037 min(-1)), and showed less interday variability with a mean CV of 24.7+/-4.3% (range 7.9-39.3%). Insulin sensitivity was also measured after a short-term stressor (5-min spray bath) of sufficient magnitude to elevate blood glucose levels. The mean insulin sensitivity after the stressor was 3.6+/-0.8 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml (range 1.6-7.3 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml), which was not significantly different to the mean insulin sensitivity before the short-term stressor (P=0.237). The mean glucose effectiveness after the stressor was 0.046+/-0.004 min(-1)(range 0.032-0.057 min(-1)), which was significantly different from mean glucose effectiveness before the short-term stressor (P=0.003). We conclude that insulin sensitivity is highly variable from day to day in normal cats, and that hyperglycaemia in response to short-term stressors is probably due to increased hepatic glucose production, rather than peripheral insulin resistance. 相似文献
