The uptake and distribution of zinc in tissues and the effects of 2500 ppm dietary zinc oxide on health, faecal microflora, and the functions of circulating neutrophils were evaluated in weaned pigs. One group was fed a zinc supplement diet and another group was used as a control. All pigs remained healthy throughout the study, but the supplemented animals showed better performance than the controls. The serum zinc values rose rapidly. At autopsy, carried out at the age of 63 days, the zinc concentrations in liver tissue were 4·5 times higher, and in renal tissue two times higher in the supplemented group than in controls (P<0·001). Microscopic examination showed increased lipid accumulation in hepatocytes from supplemented pigs. No effect on the number of excreted Escherichia coli and enterococci per gram faeces or on the functions of circulating neutrophils was observed. Dietary supplementation with 2500 ppm ZnO for up to two weeks after weaning appears to be potentially beneficial in the prevention of postweaning diarrhoea in pigs.  相似文献

Corneal samples of cats with and without corneal diseases were screened with a pan‐Chlamydiales PCR and specific PCRs for Parachlamydia, Protochlamydia, Chlamydophila felis, Acanthamoeba and feline herpesviruses (FHV‐1). Several corneal samples tested positive for Parachlamydia and related Chlamydiales, indicating cat exposure to these intracellular bacteria.  相似文献

Regulators need a reliable, precise and easy to use tool for predicting the occurrence of pesticides in drain water and catchments in agricultural areas. Occurrence depends on a wide range of substance and site specific factors and this study presents a simple model built on the results from simulations of a detailed model system that does not neglect or omit any of these factors. A drainage dominated sub-catchment (0.03 km2) of the Lillebaek catchment (4.4 km2) on Funen, Denmark, represented by the catchment model MIKE SHE is considered. Detailed analyses have been made with respect to geological and hydrodynamic conditions as well as measurements of pesticide concentrations in ground and surface waters. Maximum concentrations in drain water, the time for reaching this concentration and the time interval for exceeding the limit value have been derived empirically from MIKE SHE simulations using degradation rates and sorption coefficients values for 37 pesticides included in the Danish PATE database. The relatively hydrophilic bentazon and hydrophobic pendimethalin are used as model pesticides for illustration. A simple tool applicable for a wide range of pesticides has thus been designed based on detailed analyses of a limited number of pesticides. The user requirements are degradation rates, sorption coefficients, application rates and regulatory limit values for the pesticides of interest.  相似文献

Background

In 2008, an outbreak of ovine footrot occurred in Norway. Dichelobacter nodosus isolates collected between 2008 and 2011 have been characterised. Isolates defined as virulent by the gelatin gel test (GG-test) were only found in sheep in Rogaland County, where the severe cases of footrot were registered. The majority (96%) of the virulent isolates belonged to serogroup A. It is suspected that they represent a newly introduced strain, and the aim of the present study was to investigate whether they are genetically similar. Sixty-one virulent isolates from sheep and 116 benign isolates from sheep, cattle and goats were included. Four GG-test virulent isolates from Danish sheep were also included. All isolates were genotyped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and by PCR for pgr variant determination.

Results

The Norwegian virulent isolates were assigned to 8 pulsotypes (PTs), while the benign isolates were assigned to 66 PTs. Thirty-seven (68.5%) of the 54, virulent, serogroup A isolates belonged to the same PT, and included isolates from 2008 through 2011. Isolates belonging to this PT were defined as the outbreak strain. The remaining virulent serogroup A isolates belonged to 4 PTs differing by ≤3 bands from the outbreak strain. Two virulent, Danish, serogroup A isolates differed by 2 bands from the Norwegian outbreak strain. All but 3 (95%) of the virulent isolates had the pgrA variant while 85% of the benign isolates had the pgrB variant.

Conclusion

This study provides evidence that the footrot outbreak in Norway in 2008 most likely was caused by new introduction and local spread of one virulent D. nodosus strain.  相似文献

Indicators of piglet survival in an outdoor farrowing system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Pre-weaning piglet mortality continues to be a major welfare and economic concern. In outdoor farrowing systems, there is a particular need to broaden breeding goals by incorporating selection for piglet survival to improve both productivity and welfare. This study aimed to identify behavioural and physiological survival indicators that are influential in outdoor systems and that could provide additional information for use when selecting for piglet survival. Data were collected from 511 piglets from Large White × Landrace × Duroc sows and Generalised Linear Mixed Models determined which indicators were most important for piglet survival in an outdoor system. With respect to prenatal mortality (surviving vs. stillborn piglets) high ponderal index (< 0.001) or body mass index (P < 0.001) in conjunction with being born earlier in the farrowing birth order (< 0.001) were the most important survival indicators. Birth weight (< 0.001) and rectal temperature 1 h after birth (= 0.032) were the most significant postnatal survival indicators. However survival indicators identified as important in indoor, conventional farrowing crates, such as landmark behaviours (latency to reach the udder, a teat and to suckle colostrum), were not influential in this system. These results highlight the importance of studying potential indicators of survival in alternative farrowing systems to the farrowing crate.  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating different binary solvent mixtures for efficient industrial monoacylglycerol (MAG) production by enzymatic glycerolysis. Of all investigated cases, the binary mixture of tert-butanol:tert-pentanol (TB:TP) 80:20 vol % was the most suitable organic medium for continuous enzymatic glycerolysis, ensuring high MAG formation in a short time, reasonable solvent price, and easy handling during distillation/condensation processing. A minimum solvent dosage of 44-54 wt % of the reaction mixture was necessary to achieve high MAG yields of 47-56 wt %, within 20 min. The melting and boiling points of the TB:TP mixture were estimated to be 7 and 85 degrees C, respectively, using thermodynamic models. These predictions were in good agreement with experimentally determined values. In spite of the high reaction efficiency in the binary TB:TP system, the mixture of glycerol and sunflower oil (containing 97.1% triacylglycerol) yielded surprisingly a liquid/liquid phase split behavior even at high temperatures (>80 degrees C). This in contrast to thermodynamic model calculations suggested full miscibility in all proportions. These findings suggest that enhanced reaction efficiency in organic solvent also depends upon aspects other than the system homogeneity such as reduced viscosity, reduced mass transfer limitations, and the accessibility of the substrate to the active site of the enzyme.  相似文献

Participatory plant breeding (PPB) has been suggested as an effective alternative to formal plant breeding (FPB) as a breeding strategy for achieving productivity gains under low input conditions. With genetic progress through PPB and FPB being determined by the same genetic variables, the likelihood of success of PPB approaches applied in low input target conditions was analyzed using two case studies from FPB that have resulted in significant productivity gains under low input conditions: (1) breeding tropical maize for low input conditions by CIMMYT, and (2) breeding of spring wheat for the highly variable low input rainfed farming systems in Australia. In both cases, genetic improvement was an outcome of long-term investment in a sustained research effort aimed at understanding the detail of the important environmental constraints to productivity and the plant requirements for improved adaptation to the identified constraints, followed up by the design and continued evaluation of efficient breeding strategies. The breeding strategies used differed between the two case studies but were consistent in their attention to the key determinants of response to selection: (1) ensuring adequate sources of genetic variation and high selection pressures for the important traits at all stages of the breeding program, (2) use of experimental procedures to achieve high levels of heritability in the breeding trials, and (3) testing strategies that achieved a high genetic correlation between performance of germplasm in the breeding trials and under on-farm conditions. The implications of the outcomes from these FPB case studies for realizing the positive motivations for adopting PPB strategies are discussed with particular reference for low input target environment conditions. In cassava friable embryogenic callus (FEC) has been used to obtain transgenic plants using particle bombardment, electroporation, and Agrobacterium tumefaciens. FEC cultures have been obtained in 6 of the10 tested genotypes. In all genotypes FEC could be regenerated into plants,however the efficiency differed between the genotypes. Almost all plants regenerated from 6 months old FEC cultures of TMS604444, Adira 4,Thai 5 and M7 were morphological similar to control plants. However, in R60 and R90 a large number of plants were not identical to control plants. Older FEC lines of TMS60444 have a reduced ability to regenerate plants and the plants show somaclonal variation. Somaclonal variation is observed in the same extend in transgenic and non-transgenic plants. The origin of this variation is both genetic and epigenetic. Luciferase based selection is less efficient in producing transgenic lines than chemical selection. Furthermore Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transformation is much more efficient than particle bombardment with respect to the production of transgenic lines. A tentative model is introduced which best describes the effect of different selection regimes on the time period required to produce transgenic plants. Kanamycin and stringent luciferase selection required a shorter period of time than selection based on hygromycin, phosphinothricin or non-stringent luciferase. However, a more significant reduction of time was obtained if young instead of old FEC lines of genotype TMS60444 were used for genetic modification. In accordance to the model these young FEC lines of TMS60444 produced transgenic plants within 4 months with both Agrobacterium tumefaciens combined with kanamycin selection and particle bombardment combined with stringent luciferase selection.
