The study was conducted to investigate the relationship between some standard measures of soil reserve potassium (K) and soil mineralogy. Eight different agricultural soils from the N temperate and S boreal regions were studied and analyzed both by standard methods (exchangeable K, 2 M HCl‐ and aqua regia–extractable K) and by quantitative mineralogical methods based on X‐ray powder diffraction analysis of spray‐dried bulk soils. Linear regression and multivariate methods were used to assess the relationships between standard measures of soil reserve K and a number of soil chemical, physical, and mineralogical properties. A mineralogical budgeting approach, to estimate total K and its speciation between different mineral phases, is shown to be accurate after validation against total K analyzed geochemically. This approach enabled us to determine that both HCl‐ and aqua regia–extractable K were highly correlated with K in dioctahedral phyllosilicates and extracted 1%–17% and 5%–45% of total K, respectively. Neither extraction showed any obvious relationship to K in feldspar, which is frequently a larger reservoir of K in the soils examined.  相似文献

Based on the regulatory effects of body fat on appetite and seasonal variations in fat deposition and growth of Atlantic salmon, the present study tested the hypothesis that body fat content prior to declining day length in the autumn can significantly modulate growth rate. The growth rate of salmon (mean initial body weight, BW = 2.3 kg) with different muscle fat content prior to autumn, subjected to natural photoperiod and temperature, during a 7‐month period (mean final BW = 6.6 kg) was studied. In August, three fish groups (HF, LF and 0.5LF group) with significantly different muscle fat content (HF = 16.4%, LF = 13.2% and 0.5LF = 11.3%), individually marked with PIT‐tag, were mixed into the four net‐pens and fed a standard high‐energy diet until March the following year. The muscle fat content prior to the autumn had a highly significant (p < .0001) effect on growth during the 7‐month main‐dietary period, even after identical fat stores among the groups were restored, indicating a more complex explanation than just a lipostatic regulation mechanism. Mean thermal growth coefficients were HF = 2.9, LF = 3.4 and 0.5 LF = 3.9, resulting in increased final weight gain for LF and 0.5LF of 590 g and 980 g, respectively, compared to the HF group. The LF groups obtained a significantly higher homogeneity in BW and shape than HF‐fed fish in March, optimizing automatic gutting and filleting at slaughter. The improved growth response among the LF groups by reducing lipid levels can potentially be utilized in closed and semi‐closed production units where photoperiod can be manipulated.  相似文献

Efforts in Europe to convert Norway spruce (Picea abies) plantations to broadleaf or mixed broadleaf-conifer forests could be bolstered by an increased understanding of how artificial regeneration acclimates and functions under a range of Norway spruce stand conditions. We studied foliage characteristics and leaf-level photosynthesis on 7-year-old European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) regeneration established in open patches and shelterwoods of a partially harvested Norway spruce plantation in southwestern Sweden. Both species exhibited morphological plasticity at the leaf level by developing leaf blades in patches with an average mass per unit area (LMA) 54% greater than of those in shelterwoods, and at the plant level by maintaining a leaf area ratio (LAR) in shelterwoods that was 78% greater than in patches. However, we observed interspecific differences in photosynthetic capacity relative to spruce canopy openness. Photosynthetic capacity (A1600, net photosynthesis at a photosynthetic photon flux density of 1600 μmol photons m−2 s−1) of beech in respect to the canopy gradient was best related to leaf mass, and declined substantially with increasing canopy openness primarily because leaf nitrogen (N) in this species decreased about 0.9 mg g−1 with each 10% rise in canopy openness. In contrast, A1600 of oak showed a weak response to mass-based N, and furthermore the percentage of N remained constant in oak leaf tissues across the canopy gradient. Therefore, oak photosynthetic capacity along the canopy gradient was best related to leaf area, and increased as the spruce canopy thinned primarily because LMA rose 8.6 g m−2 for each 10% increase in canopy openness. These findings support the premise that spruce stand structure regulates photosynthetic capacity of beech through processes that determine N status of this species; leaf N (mass basis) was greatest under relatively closed spruce canopies where leaves apparently acclimate by enhancing light harvesting mechanisms. Spruce stand structure regulates photosynthetic capacity of oak through processes that control LMA; LMA was greatest under open spruce canopies of high light availability where leaves apparently acclimate by enhancing CO2 fixation mechanisms.  相似文献

As part of developing a European Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for Tilletia indica , the causal agent of Karnal bunt of wheat, teliospore survival studies were done outside under quarantine containment at three European sites (Norway, UK, Italy). At each site, experiments were set up in three consecutive years (Experiments 1, 2 & 3) to determine teliospore survival over time (1–3 years) at 5, 10 and 20 cm depths. Experiments were sampled annually and survival assessed in relation to teliospore recovery and to germination at recovery (T0) and 3 months after recovery in case of burial-induced dormancy ( T3 ). Teliospores survived at all three sites at all depths over all the time periods studied. At each site, there was no evidence of a marked decline in teliospore recovery between sampling years, except in one set of years in one Norwegian experiment. There was no consistent effect of depth on recovery. In general there was little evidence for a marked decline in teliospore germination between sampling years. There was some evidence of a decrease in germination with increasing depth in the UK, and for some time-depth interactions. After 3 years' incubation (Experiment 1), mean teliospore recovery and mean germination were: UK: 61% recovery and 31% ( 33% ) germination for T0 (and T3 ); Italy: 30% recovery and 36% ( 29% ) germination; and Norway: 12% recovery and 19% ( 49% ) germination. Germination for laboratory controls ranged from 20–59% (UK), 18–41% (Italy) and 28–59% (Norway). There was no evidence for burial-induced dormancy except in Norway. Teliospores of T. indica can survive for at least three years in European soils. This prolonged period of survival could support establishment of the pathogen if it were introduced into areas of European cereal production.  相似文献

Key message

This data set provides unique empirical data from triplets of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) and European beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) across Europe. Dendrometric variables are provided for 32 triplets, 96 plots, 7555 trees and 4695 core samples. These data contribute to our understanding of mixed stand dynamics.
