The purpose of this investigation was to characterize waters in ash basins of coal-fired thermoelectric power plants and to identify constituents of concern from an environmental risk-based perspective. The investigation incorporated results from literature review and from laboratory analysis of ash-basin waters. General chemistry and concentrations of major and trace elements were investigated. Risk was assessed for aquatic life by a risk quotient approach using environmental exposure and toxic effects concentrations. The following constituents of concern in ash-basin waters were identified by the risk quotient method: aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, selenium, and zinc. In addition, pH was considered a constituent of concern because the observed pH range for ash-basin waters exceeded the range indicating reproductive impairment or mortality for sentinel species used for toxicity evaluation. The results of this investigation can be used to assess potential effects (reasonable potential analysis) for receiving system aquatic biota as a consequence of exposure to ash-basin effluent and applied to developing remediation strategies. The constituents of concern are readily treatable, and ash-basin waters can be potentially reused within a power plant or for other purposes (e.g., irrigation or stream flow augmentation).  相似文献

The effectiveness of trap cropping as an integrated control strategy against western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), was explored in potted chrysanthemum, Dendranthema grandiflora (Tzvelev), greenhouse crops. The efficacy of flowering chrysanthemum trap plants, either treated with the insecticide spinosad or untreated, to regulate F. occidentalis populations was tested at different spatial scales (small cage, large cage and commercial greenhouse) and for different time periods (1 or 4 weeks). It was demonstrated that flowering chrysanthemums as trap plants lower the number of adult F. occidentalis in a vegetative chrysanthemum crop and, as a result, reduce crop damage. In the 4 week large-cage trial and the commercial trial, significant differences between the control and the trap plant treatments started to appear in the third week of the experiment. Larvae were only significantly reduced by the presence of trap plants in the 1 week small-cage trials. There were no significant differences between treatments with spinosad-treated and untreated trap plants in the number of F. occidentalis on the crop. This suggests that there was minimal movement of adult F. occidentalis back and forth between the trap plants and the crop to feed and oviposit. It is concluded that the trap plant strategy is a useful tool for integrated pest management against F. occidentalis in greenhouses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of food insecurity and factors related to it among homeless and runaway adolescents. DESIGN: Computer-assisted personal interviews were conducted with homeless and runaway adolescents directly on the streets and in shelters. SETTING: Interviews were conducted in eight Midwest cities: Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Kansas City, Lincoln, Omaha, St. Louis and Wichita. SUBJECTS: The subjects were 428 (187 males; 241 females) homeless and runaway adolescents aged 16-19 years. Average age of the adolescents was 17.4 (standard deviation 1.05) years. RESULTS: About one-third of the adolescents had experienced food insecurity in the past 30 days. Factors associated with food insecurity were age of adolescent, a history of caretaker neglect and abuse, having ever spent time directly on the street, a small post-runaway social network, and engaging in deviant and non-deviant street food-acquisition strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings, our conservative estimate is that nationally more than 165,000 homeless and runaway adolescents experienced food insecurity in the past 30 days. These adolescents are largely hidden from public notice and they are usually missed in studies that address national hunger.  相似文献

The human endogenous intestinal microflora is an essential "organ" in providing nourishment, regulating epithelial development, and instructing innate immunity; yet, surprisingly, basic features remain poorly described. We examined 13,355 prokaryotic ribosomal RNA gene sequences from multiple colonic mucosal sites and feces of healthy subjects to improve our understanding of gut microbial diversity. A majority of the bacterial sequences corresponded to uncultivated species and novel microorganisms. We discovered significant intersubject variability and differences between stool and mucosa community composition. Characterization of this immensely diverse ecosystem is the first step in elucidating its role in health and disease.  相似文献

We sampled several Ontario Hydro reservoirs to deteimine the changes in mercury (Hg) and organic profiles of sediment cores with reservoir development We also examined Hg methylation among reservoirs of different age and water chemistry. In sediment cores from four Ontario reservoirs, reservoir (watershed) specific differences appeared to supersede general trends, with the differences between headpond and run-of-river reservoirs particularly important In general, the rate of Hg and organic accumulation appeared to increase with reservoir impoundment, but we were unable to discern consistent changes in concentrations of Hg or loss on ignition (LOI) with reservoir impoundment We also observed significant positive correlations of sediment Hg with concentrations of chlorophyll derivatives and bacterial photopigments. Our results are in agreement with earlier studies which indicated that an increase in Hg supply caused by erosion and release from flooded soils is central to the changes in Hg dynamics within reservoirs following impoundment Although Hg methylation activity of sediments, from a series of reservoirs on the Mississagi River was positively correlated with organic content of the sediment, the observed rates were sufficiently variable that the potential effects of reservoir age or preparation methods could not be resolved. Similarly, in our measurements of net methylmercury (MeHg) flux in two older reservoirs, the large range of variation in net MeHg flux observed among replicate samples obscured the potential effects of differences in geology and water chemistry. Future studies should focus on resolving the underlying causes of this variability and in consolidating the ‘microscale’ measurements obtained using sediment core incubation techniques and the ‘macroscale’ values obtained by whole lake mass balance techniques.  相似文献

The radioactive liquid waste (RLW) system in Ontario Hydro's pressurised heavy water reactors collects drainage from a variety of sources ranging from floor drains to laundry waste. RLW effluent was intermittently toxic to rainbow trout andDaphnia magna during the first phase of Ontario's Municipal Industrial Strategy for Abatement (MISA) Program, apparently as a result of the interaction of a variety of known and unknown organic and inorganic compounds. Accordingly, we employed a tmatment-based approach to reducing its toxicity, supplemented by chemical analysis. Two series of toxicity reduction tests were conducted. The fast series explored the potential for sorption of the possible toxicants, while the accord series incorporated a wider variety of treatments. Of the 24 samples in the first test series, 17 were toxic (D. magna mortality ≥ 50%). Of the toxic samples, only 7 of 17 were still toxic after passage through an activated carbon column, but 5 of 6 samples tested remained toxic after passage through a metal chelating resin column. In the second series, at least one of the treatments was effective in reducing toxicity of all samples which were initially toxic (16 of 24 samples), but no one treatment was effective for all toxic samples. Three treatments (UV/H2O2 photo-oxidation with prior pH adjustment, or passage through a column of either a non-functioalized (N-F) resin or a mixture of N-F resin and a weak base (W-B) anion exchange rain), were effective in reducing the toxicity of more than 50% of the toxic samples; yet roughly 25% of these samples remained toxic after treatment O2 sparging, UV/H2O2 photo-oxidation without prior pH adjustment, and passage through a column of the W-B Resin were less effective, as more than 50% of the samples remained toxic after treatment. Filtering was not effective, as all of the treated samples (9/9) retained their toxicity. There was no obvious correspondence between toxicity and the concentrations of metals (Cu, Zn, Fe, Al and Cd) nor were any simple relationships apparent between toxicity and Total Organic Carbon or NH3 concentrations. At stations where radioactive liquid wastes are segregated, toxicity was also segregated, suggesting that we may be able to address the problem at source through a combination of Best Management Practices and smaller scale treatment facilities.  相似文献

Functional roles of Schoenoplectus californicus, giant bulrush, were evaluated in an 3.2 ha (8-acre) constructed wetland treatment system receiving copper-contaminated water. The constructed wetland used in this research was designed to decrease bioavailable copper concentrations in a wastestream and eliminate associated toxicity to downstream biota by exploiting the thermodynamic processes responsible for copper speciation. This was achieved by integrating carbon, sulfur and copper biogeochemical cycles. In this system, S. californicus, which represents an integral part of the carbon cycle, provides a physical, chemical and biological role in removing metals from the aqueous phase. The specific contributions of S. californicus in this system are to provide a sustainable carbon source for removal of copper by (1) provision of an organic ligand for sorption of copper entering the system, (2) production of organic ligands through growth of S. californicus, (3) accretion of organic ligands over time due to decomposition of S. californicus detritus, and (4) use of organic carbon as an energy source for dissimilatory sulfate production. Shoots and roots of viable S. californicus sorbed 0.88% and 5.88%, respectively, of copper entering the system. The half-life of S. californicus detritus in the constructed wetland system was approximately 184 d, indicating that sufficient detritus will accrete over time, providing binding sites for copper and an energy source for bacterial metabolic processes that contribute to copper immobilization in wetland systems.  相似文献

Nitrification was much slower in five strongly acid (pH 4.0–4.3) soils from tea plantations in Sri Lanka than in a near-neutral grassland soil from the U.K., suggesting that the nitrifiers in these tea soils are close to the lower limit of their pH range. Nitrapyrin effectively inhibited nitrification in all the soils: dicyandiamide was less effective. Low concentrations of KC1 slowed nitrification in the acid tea soils but not in the near-neutral grassland soil. The concentrations of KC1 used (up to 20 mM) were sufficient to cause measurable decreases in soil pH in both acid and neutral soils. It is proposed that this salt-induced decrease in pH is detrimental to nitrifying organisms operating at the limit of their pH range but not to nitrifiers nearer their pH optimum.  相似文献

Summary Nitrification inhibitors were applied to a field experiment on loamy sand soil each autumn for 4 years, immediately prior to sowing winter cereals. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that repeated application of the inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) to a soil had little effect either on the rate of DCD decomposition or the ability of DCD to inhibit nitrification. Repeated field application of the inhibitors DCD, nitrapyrin or etridiazole resulted in increased sensitivity of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria to nitrapyrin or etridiazole, but not to DCD. The rate of decomposition of etridiazole was unaffected by four annual applications of this inhibitor, but decomposition of nitrapyrin was somewhat slower in soil that had received nitrapyrin annually for 4 years than in soil that had never been treated with an inhibitor.  相似文献

The aim of the pedigree-based genome mapping project is to investigate and develop systems for implementing marker assisted selection to improve the efficiency of selection and increase the rate of genetic gain in breeding programs. Pedigree-based whole genome marker application provides a vehicle for incorporating marker technologies into applied breeding programs by bridging the gap between marker–trait association and marker implementation. We report on the development of protocols for implementation of pedigree-based whole genome marker analysis in breeding programs within the Australian northern winter cereals region. Examples of applications from the Queensland DPI&F wheat and barley breeding programs are provided, commenting on the use of microsatellites and other types of molecular markers for routine genomic analysis, the integration of genotypic, phenotypic and pedigree information for targeted wheat and barley lines, the genomic impacts of strong selection pressure in case study pedigrees, and directions for future pedigree-based marker development and analysis.  相似文献
