A tibial tuberosity radiolucency is sometimes identified on lateral radiographs of canine stifle joints, however little is known about the cause or significance. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence, association with other stifle conditions, and histopathologic characteristics of tibial tuberosity radiolucencies in a group of dogs. Radiographs of all canine stifle joints over 5 years were evaluated. Presence or absence of a tibial tuberosity radiolucency was recorded by an observer who was unaware of clinical status. Patient signalment and presence of other stifle joint conditions were recorded from medical records. A tibial tuberosity radiolucency was found in 145/675 dogs (prevalence = 21.5%). Statistically significant associations were identified between tibial tuberosity radiolucency and stifle condition (P < 0.0001), breed size (P = 0.011), and younger age of presentation (P = 0.001), but not with gender (P = 0.513). Dogs with a tibial tuberosity radiolucency had higher odds of having a medial patellar luxation than dogs without (OR = 9.854, P < 0.0001, 95% CI 6.422–15.120). Dogs with a tibial tuberosity radiolucency had lower odds of having a cranial cruciate ligament rupture than dogs without (OR = 0.418, P < 0.0001, 95% CI 0.287–0.609). Four canine cadavers, two with normal stifles and two with tibial tuberosity radiolucencies, underwent radiographic, computed tomographic, and histologic examination of the stifles. Computed tomography revealed a hypoattenuating cortical defect in the lateral aspect of the proximal tibial tuberosity that corresponded histopathologically to a hyaline cartilage core. A 4-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat was presented to The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine for a 2-month history of severe weight loss, lethargy, anemia, and bilaterally hyperechoic kidneys with loss of corticomedullary distinction as reported by the referring veterinarian. Relevant initial laboratory results included severe non-regenerative normocytic hypochromic anemia, increased blood urea nitrogen, minimally concentrated urine, proteinuria, and an increased urine protein:creatinine ratio. Cytologic evaluation of a bone marrow aspirate revealed a markedly hypocellular marrow with abundant mucinous material. Gelatinous marrow transformation (GMT) was confirmed histologically by the presence of mucinous material in the bone marrow that stained positive for Alcian blue but negative for periodic acid-Schiff. The cat died despite repeated blood transfusions and supportive care. Gelatinous marrow transformation, immune complex-mediated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage were observed on autopsy and histology. It is likely that the development of GMT was secondary to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and that CKD, GMT, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage contributed to the cat's non-regenerative anemia. 相似文献

Farm-to-school (FTS) programs have garnered the attentions and energies of people in a diverse array of social locations in the food system and are serving as a sort of touchstone for many in the alternative agrifood movement. Yet, unlike other alternative agrifood initiatives, FTS programs intersect directly with the long-established institution of the welfare state, including its vestiges of New Deal farm programs and public entitlement. This paper explores how FTS is navigating the liminal terrain of public and private initiative, particularly the ways in which it interfaces with neoliberalism as both a material and discursive project. It examines the political emergence of school food programs and finds that FTS is strikingly similar to traditional school programs in objectives, but differs in approach. Yet, in their efforts to fill in the gaps created by political and economic neoliberalization, FTS advocates are in essence producing neoliberal forms and practices afresh. These include those associated with contingent labor relationships, private funding sources, and the devolution of responsibility to the local, all of which have serious consequences for social equity. The paper also discusses how FTS programs are employing the rhetoric of neoliberal governmentality, including personal responsibility and individual success, consumerism, and choice. While these may be tactical choices used to secure funding in a competitive environment, they may also contribute to the normalization of neoliberalism, further circumscribing the possibilities of what can be imagined and created to solve social problems. 相似文献

Natural killer cell (NK) receptors for major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I influence engraftment and graft-versus-tumor effects after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. We find that SH2-containing inositol phosphatase (SHIP) influences the repertoire of NK receptors. In adult SHIP-/- mice, the NK compartment is dominated by cells that express two inhibitory receptors capable of binding either self or allogeneic MHC ligands. This promiscuous repertoire has significant functional consequences, because SHIP-/- mice fail to reject fully mismatched allogeneic marrow grafts and show enhanced survival after such transplants. Thus, SHIP plays an important role in two processes that limit the success of allogeneic marrow transplantation: graft rejection and graft-versus-host disease. 相似文献
