Vietnamese pangasius farming needs to produce efficiently to compete in world markets. This study investigates the input- and output-specific technical inefficiency of Vietnamese pangasius farmers. First, we used a Russell-type (input–output) directional distance function to estimate the input- and output-specific technical inefficiency. Second, we applied a bootstrap truncated regression to analyze the factors influencing these technical inefficiencies. Results show that the main challenges for enhancing the performance of Vietnamese pangasius production are inadequate use of capital assets (inefficiency of 42%) and improper methods to achieve higher fish yield (inefficiency of 30%). Input-specific technical inefficiency (pond area and feed) is negatively associated with the experience and education level of pangasius farmers. Location of the farm in a saltwater intrusion area is positively associated with the inefficiency of producing fish. Outcomes of this study are useful to identify successful strategies to minimize the use of inputs while simultaneously maximizing fish production.  相似文献

Two dietary cation anion difference (CAD) levels (-100 and 200 mEq/kg) and two dietary nonstarch polysaccharide (NSP) levels (10 and 15%) were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement in two randomized blocks (trials) to evaluate performance, digesta pH and buffer capacity, apparent digestibility, plasma composition, and organ weight in pigs. Seven pigs with a mean initial weight of 7.5 kg were used in each treatment. Pigs had free access to feed and water during the 3-wk experimental period. At the end of the experiment, all pigs were killed approximately 2.5 h after addition of fresh feed. Liver, kidneys, and small and large intestine were removed and weighed immediately. Gastric and small intestinal (divided into two equal parts) digesta were collected. Dry matter, pH, buffering capacity, viscosity, acid insoluble ash, mineral content (Na+, K+, and Cl-), nitrogen, and gross energy content (only in the second part of the small intestine) of the digesta were measured. An interaction (P < 0.05) between dietary CAD and dietary NSP was observed for feed intake, growth, apparent digestibility of DM and gross energy in the distal small intestine, and chloride in the stomach and duodeno-jejunal part of the small intestine. Increasing dietary NSP content increased apparent digestibility of DM and chloride in the stomach and increased apparent digestibility of DM, chloride, sodium, and potassium in the first part of the small intestine. Lowering dietary CAD levels significantly increased apparent digestibility of DM in the first part of the small intestine and decreased chloride influx in the stomach and the small intestine. No significant differences were found for pH, buffering capacity, and viscosity of digesta, except the buffering capacity in the second part of the small intestine, which was higher (P < 0.05) in the 200 mEq/kg CAD group than in the -100 CAD mEq/ kg group. Plasma urea decreased in the low dietary CAD groups and plasma ammonia increased in the high NSP groups. Large intestine weight was significantly less for the -100 mEq/kg CAD groups than for the 200 mEq/kg CAD groups. In conclusion, the effect of CAD on feed intake and growth in pigs depends on dietary NSP levels.  相似文献

A study was conducted to examine the effect of dietary cation-anion difference (CAD, Na++K+-Cl, mEq kg –1) on acid-base balance, food consumption and growth of juvenile African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Four dietary CAD levels (-100, 100, 500, 700 mEq kg–1) were established by altering levels of NaHCO3, CaCl2 and NH4Cl in the diets. The group fed the diet of excess anions (CAD: -100 mEq kg–1) had low food consumption and growth rate. Food consumption and growth increased linearly with an increase in dietary CAD within the range -100 to 700 meq. kg–1. Blood pH was not significantly influenced by dietary CAD. A quadratic relationship between Na+, Cl and CAD level in plasma and dietary CAD was found. Body composition of fish and nitrogen/energy utilisation efficiency differed between dietary CAD treatments. The results suggest that dietary CAD influence acid-base regulation and thus the energy costs for maintaining homeostasis. The increased food intake and growth performance of C. gariepinus at higher CAD levels may be related to a reduced maintenance costs for homeostasis.  相似文献

The influence of dietary cation–anion difference (CAD, Na+ + K+– Cl, mEq kg–1) on energy metabolism and nitrogen losses in juvenile African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) was examined in fish exposed to different dietary CAD levels (–146, 116, 497, 713 and 828 mEq kg–1 diet). The experiment was conducted in open circuit balance respiration chambers over a 3-week period. Five 24-h monitoring periods were carried out at 3-day intervals during the experimental period with O2 consumption, ammonia and nitrate + nitrite (NOx) and CO2 production being measured at 5-min intervals for each chamber. The negative dietary CAD (–146 mEq kg–1) resulted in the highest energy expenditures (83 kJ kg–0.8· d–1). With increasing dietary CAD levels, heat loss gradually decreased to minimum values of 56 kJ kg–0.8 day–1 at a dietary CAD level of 713 mEq kg–1. Consequently, metabolizable energy utilization efficiency (MEU, percentage of retained energy over metabolizable energy) quadratically ( P  < 0.05) increased and reached a maximum at a dietary CAD of 713 mEq kg–1.  相似文献

The present study investigated the qualitative amino acid (AA) requirements of larval African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Yolk-sac larval AA profiles were measured at different temperatures and also in animals reared at 28 °C fed Artemia nauplii or an experimental dry diet. The AA profile of C. gariepinus larvae changed during ontogeny, especially before the start of exogenous feeding. The AA profiles of the food items (yolk, Artemia and the dry diet) differed considerably from that of the larvae. No selective absorption of yolk AA was detected. Higher temperatures led to increased absorption and depletion rates of AA, and also to a higher retention efficiency of yolk nutrients. However, changes in temperature did not induce preferential absorption or depletion of individual AA, and caused only small variations in the AA profile. Depletion rates of individual AAs varied, possibly due to differences between larval and yolk AA profiles, and also to changes in the larval AA profile during ontogeny. There was little regulation of catabolism of individual AA in yolk-sac and starved larvae, and no sparing of essential AA.  相似文献

Steroids accumulate in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), although explanatory factors for such accumulation are still poorly explored. This study investigated the effect of water exchange rate and pH in six replicated RAS on the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in rainbow trout blood plasma and in the holding water and of the sex steroids testosterone, 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) and 17,20β‐dihydroxypregn‐4‐en‐3‐one (17,20β‐P) over a 70‐day experimental period. Three combinations of water exchange rate and pH were used each treatment, with two replications: (i) high water exchange rate (±1700 L kg?1 feed) and neutral pH (±7.3), (ii) low water exchange rate (±500 L kg?1 feed) and neutral pH (±7.3) and (iii) low water exchange rate (±500 L kg?1 feed) and low pH (±5.8). Plasma cortisol concentrations at day 70 were higher (24.4 ± 9.5 ng mL?1) for fish kept at low pH when compared to fish kept at neutral pH (12.0 ± 0.1 and 8.7 ± 0.2 ng mL?1). Water cortisol and testosterone concentrations at day 35 were higher at low pH than at neutral pH, whereas water 11‐KT and 17,20β‐P did not differ among treatments. At day 70, there were no significant differences between low and high pH. These results demonstrate that low pH contributes to increased plasma cortisol concentrations and to its accumulation in water, possibly indicating a stress response to low pH. The higher concentration of testosterone but not of the other sex hormones point to unspecified reproductive effects that need further investigation.  相似文献

Soybean meal (SBM) induces enteritis in the distal intestine of Atlantic salmon. The present study assesses the effects of SBM concentrations on the kinetics of the enteritis process. Fish of 300 g, kept at 12 °C, were fed diets with different SBM inclusions: 0%, 10% and 20% SBM for 57 days. Samples of the distal intestine of five fish per treatment were taken for histological and electron microscopical analysis. A semi-quantitative scoring system was used to assess the degree of the morphological changes induced by SBM feeding in the distal intestinal epithelium. The first signs of enteritis appeared earlier in the salmon fed the 20SBM diet than in those fed the 10SBM diet. Thereafter, the condition increased steadily, displaying no signs of recovery. Furthermore, at the lower concentration, the process marking the onset of enteritis began more gradually than at the higher concentration and it displayed a tendency to stabilize after 13–20 days of continuous feeding. Electron microscopy indicated that the endocytosis process was hampered at day 3 of 20SBM and at 7 days of 10SBM. Furthermore, a strong reduction of microvilli was already evident after 7 days of 20SBM feeding, thus indicating a decreased uptake capacity of the distal enterocytes. In addition, transformation and migration of eosinophilic granulocytes was observed, which, in combination with the lysozyme C immunoreactivity supports their protective role during the inflammatory process in the distal gut of Atlantic salmon. It can be concluded that the severity of enteritis and its kinetics are concentration-dependent, showing no signs of recovery during feeding with diets containing SBM.  相似文献

A simulation model for the production of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus niloticus L.) for mixed‐ or mono‐sex culture and for poly‐culture with the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) or African snakehead (Parachanna obscura Günther 1861) is presented. The model is based on an exponential decay model used in population dynamics and follows an individual‐based approach. The model consists of a tilapia sub‐model representing population dynamics, growth and recruitment and a predator sub‐model representing the predation process and population dynamics and growth of the used predator. The model was calibrated with data on mixed‐ or mono‐sex culture of Nile tilapia and for poly‐culture with the African catfish or African snakehead obtained in Congo Brazzaville and validated with similar data from the Philippines, Thailand and the Ivory Coast. The model visualized major underlying processes in tilapia farming and aspects for further improvement of the model; growth is one of the most sensitive input parameters and should be quantitatively related to feeding level and feed quality; length at first maturity and quantification of the recruitment of Nile tilapia has a relatively large influence and recruitment should be related to the length of the females; prey–predator relations are too coarse and should be more fine‐tuned with the relation between prey size and predator size. Incorporation of these features would provide the basis of a model that can serve as a predictive and decision‐making support tool.  相似文献

Yolk-sac larvae and starved larvae of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822), reared at 28°C, were predominantly ammonotelic, but urea excretion contributed about 19±7% to the total nitrogen excretion. Exogenously feeding larvae of C. gariepinus were mainly ammonotelic until 180-205 h post fertilization, but from then on the relative urea excretion stabilized at 44±13%. The contents of total free amino acids (FAA) and ammonia in C. gariepinus peaked around complete yolk absorption. During the first period after hatching 64% of the FAA and 60% of the total ammonia were located in the yolk compartment. The body compartment contained the highest amount of FAA and total ammonia at the end of the yolk-sac period (65 and 77%, respectively). The amount of nitrogen originating from catabolism of amino acids was balanced within 6% by the excreted sum of ammonia and urea. The high degree of ureotelism in C. gariepinus larvae may constitute an adaptive mechanism to a habitat of temporal water shortage.  相似文献
