BACKGROUND

Birds have been shown to reduce pest effects on various ecosystem types. This study aimed to synthesize the effect of birds on pest abundance, product damage and yield in agricultural and forest systems in different environments. Our hypothesis is that birds are effective pest regulators that contribute to a reduction in pest abundance, enhancement of yield quality and quantity and economic profit, and that pest regulation may depend on moderators such as the type of ecosystem, climate, pest, and indicator (ecological or economic).

RESULTS

We performed a systematic literature review of experimental and observational studies related to biological control in the presence and absence of regulatory birds. We retained 449 observations from 104 primary studies that were evaluated through qualitative and quantitative analyses. Of the 79 studies with known effects of birds on pest regulation, nearly half of the 334 observations showed positive effects (49%), 46% showed neutral effects, and very few (5%) showed negative effects. Overall effect sizes were positive (mean Hedges’ d = 0.38 ± 0.06). A multiple model selection retained only ecosystem and indicator types as significant moderators.

CONCLUSION

Our results support our hypothesis that there is a positive effect of avian control of pests for each analyzed moderator and this effect was significant for both ecological and economic indicators. Avian regulation of pests is a potential effective approach for environmentally friendly pest management that can reduce pesticide use regardless of the context of implementation. © 2023 The Authors. Cystic ovarian disease (COD) is one of the main causes of infertility in dairy cattle. It has been shown that intra‐ovarian factors, such as members of the insulin‐like growth factor (IGF) system, may contribute to follicular persistence. The bioavailability of IGF to initiate its response by binding to specific receptors (IGFRs) depends on interactions with related compounds, such as pregnancy‐associated plasma protein A (PAPP‐A). The aim of this study was to determine IGFR1 and PAPP‐A expression both in follicles at different stages of development and in cysts, to evaluate the roles in the etiopathogenesis of COD in cattle. The mRNA expression of PAPP‐A was higher in granulosa cells of large tertiary follicles than in cysts, whereas the protein PAPP‐A present in the follicular fluid from these follicles showed no differences. Although no PAPP‐A mRNA expression was detected in smaller tertiary follicles, in their follicular fluid, this protease was detected in lesser concentration than in cysts. The mRNA expression of IGFR1 was lower in granulosa cells from cystic follicles than in those from tertiary ones. However, the protein expression of this receptor presented the highest levels in cystic structures, probably to increase the possibility of IGF response. The data obtained would indicate that animals with COD have an altered regulation of the IGF system in the ovary, which could be involved in the pathogenesis of this disease in cattle.  相似文献

Purpose

The objective of this research was to apply the same immobilization (stabilization/solidification) clay-based treatments to sediment contaminated with different metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cr) with different distributions and availabilities in sediment. We also examined the possibility of using clay as an immobilization agent without the application of thermal treatment, in order to reduce the economic cost of this expensive remediation procedure.

Materials and methods

Clay from a canal in Vojvodina, Republic of Serbia, was used as the immobilization agent in a stabilization/solidification treatment to remediate metal-contaminated sediment. Semi-dynamic and toxicity characteristic leaching tests were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the nonthermal and thermal immobilization treatments with clay, and the long-term leaching behavior of these metals was determined using the following parameters: cumulative percentage of metals leached; diffusion coefficients; leachability indices; and toxicity characteristic leaching test concentration.

Results and discussion

Based on these parameters, both clay-based treatments were effective in immobilizing metals in the contaminated sediment. Results suggest that both heating temperature and clay proportion in the sediment–clay mixture impact the degree of metal immobilization.

Conclusions

Clay-based products are potentially good immobilization materials for metal-contaminated sediments, with the distribution of metals in the original sediment not influencing the efficacy of the treatments. Even without the thermal treatment, the metals were effectively immobilized. The leaching of metals was largely inside the regulatory limits and the treated samples can be regarded as nonhazardous materials. This justifies the choice of not applying the more expensive thermal treatment during remediation, especially when treating sediments containing a mixture of pollutants.  相似文献

Describing the biotic and abiotic processes that are responsible for the formation of spatial patterns in predators and their prey is crucial for improving our understanding of food–web interactions. We studied the spatial distribution of four abundant spider species and three common groups of epedaphic Collembola prey in a beech-dominated (Fagus sylvatica) forest floor habitat and related the observed patterns to environmental heterogeneity, overall predator activity (all ground beetles and spiders) and prey availability (all Collembola) at the local scale. Spiders and epedaphic Collembola were sampled over 392 days in a spatially explicit design based on a regular grid of 25 pitfall traps (inter-trap distance 100 m). Environmental heterogeneity was characterized by cover of moss and litter as well as the amount of dead wood at each trap location. We first used the index of dispersion to characterize the spatial distribution of spider species and Collembola and then related the observed patterns to environmental heterogeneity, predator and prey availability while testing for spatial autocorrelation within the same models. All taxa were significantly more aggregated than expected from the assumption of random distribution. The distribution of spider species was positively (Coelotes terrestris) or negatively (Tenuiphantes zimmermanni and Tapinocyba insecta) related to the cover of moss and negatively related to litter cover (C. terrestris) or the local availability of prey (T. insecta). The distribution of Collembola was negatively related to local litter cover (Lepidocyrtus spp.) and positively related to the amount of medium deadwood pieces (all other Entomobryidae). Our study suggests that none of the spider species preferred areas of low overall predator activity density. Moreover, it does not indicate association of spider species to prey-rich areas at the analyzed scale of 100 m. It further highlights the importance of environmental heterogeneity, as different habitat properties differentially affected the local activity density of spiders and Collembola and thus considerably contributed to the understanding of distribution patterns.  相似文献

The mining exploitation of metallic sulphides, together with the activities associated to the mineral treatment and smelting, when maintained through centuries due to the wealth of the ores, generate important accumulations of wastes in structures of different kind of tailing dams and ponds, for instance. When no previous corrective steps are taken, as usually happens in old exploitations, this means a serious risk of environmental pollution, due to the mobilisation of heavy metals. The present study has been carried out in a mining district, actively exploited during the last two millennia, that was the first world??s producer of lead during some periods (Linares-La Carolina, southern Spain). In this district, the mining activity was associated to a philonian network of metallic sulphurs and ended by the 1980s of the past century. The ancient mining operations, mostly subterranean, have generated large accumulations of residues without any prior corrective action. Therefore, this work intends to characterise these mining dams and determine the influence of these mining wastes on the quality of surface and ground waters. With this goal, three structures that store the mining refuse of different mineralogical origin have been selected. First, a geochemical characterisation of the soil was performed in the area surrounding each of the structures. In all cases, high levels of trace elements (including Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, Mn, As, Sb and Ba) were observed. A hydrochemical study revealed the mobilisation through the aqueous medium of certain contaminants from the leachate of these ancient accumulations; these contaminants will flow to the streams that drain the area or to the aquifers of the sector. The internal characterisation of these structures was performed with geophysical techniques, specifically electrical resistivity imaging (ERI). The six generated resistivity models have allowed the identification of the morphology of the structures, variations in the vertical and horizontal distribution of the deposited material, fracture zones, water content and reload?Cunload zones and the contact of the mining wastes with the substrate. Thus, the ERI study confirms the lack of impermeabilisation measures for the terrain in the spill zones in all three cases, which indicates a high risk of contamination of the soil and waters. The obtained images also permit the identification of the ideal positions to conduct future borehole controls.  相似文献

The analysis of cytokines secreted by antigen-specific lymphocytes is hampered in goats by the paucity of species-specific reagents yet it is crucial to study immune responses to infections. To overcome this limit, two commercial kits designed to measure soluble bovine IL-4 (by ELISA) and frequencies of bovine IFN-gamma secreting cells (by ELISPOT) were tested for cross-reactivity in goats. In addition, an ELISA specific to bovine/ovine IL-4 and employing two monoclonal antibodies, clones CC313 and CC314, was tested as well. Concanavalin A-stimulated caprine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) cultures were studied and they exhibited high levels of soluble IL-4 and high frequencies of IFN-gamma secreting cells. In addition, the two IL-4 ELISAs detected similar amounts of cytokine. To start defining the cytokine response triggered by caprine herpesvirus 1 (CpHV-1) infection, PBMC cultures were setup from goats naturally or experimentally infected with CpHV-1. High frequencies of IFN-gamma producing cells and low, when detectable, levels of soluble IL-4 were observed in CpHV-1-specific PBMC cultures from both groups of infected goats. Thus, the availability of cross-reactive research tools can expand cytokine studies in goats and can implement the research on immunity to other caprine infections.  相似文献

Tetrasomic plants with two additional small chromosomes were identified, with a frequency about 2.5%, in the trisomic pea line TRUST-R, which normally contains one extra chromosome covering a sporophyte lethal in the regular chromosome set. As compared to trisomics, tetrasomics exhibited an enhanced expression of the traits resulting from extra chromosome addition: slow growth, enlarged bracts, shortened peduncles, wavy leaflets and stipulae. They were almost sterile, their pollen contained a variable proportion of empty grains and some anomalously large, small or deformed grains. In metaphase I, two extra chromosomes did not form a stable bivalent and only in some cases were situated close to each other. In anaphase I, the extra chromosomes migrated independently to either pole or retarded in the equatorial plain, the same was observed for chromatids in anaphase II. This retardation resulted in anomalous cytokinesis, so that triads, dyads and half-divided or non-divided monads appeared. The retarded extra chromosomes may form small extra nuclei either included into one of the microspores or forming a separate miniature cell; in this way tetrasomics may eliminate extra chromosomes. One of the tetrasomics analysed formed an exceptionally high proportion of microspore pentads. In the regluar TRUST-R trisomics, the sole extra chromosome retarded in the equatorial plain in anaphases I and II. The retardation in anaphase II often makes cytokinesis in trisomics (in general more regular than in tetrasomic) to proceed in two steps: at first cell wall formation separates a pollen mother cell into two dyads and then each of them into two microspores.  相似文献

Cassava brown streak disease (CBSD), caused by Cassava brown streak virus (CBSV) and Ugandan cassava brown streak virus (UCBSV), ranks among the top seven biological threats to global food security. The disease poses a significant threat to cassava production in East and Central Africa (ECA). In Uganda, overall CBSD incidence increased by c. 20% since it re‐emerged in 2004, and the disease persistently reduces cassava yields and storage root qualities. The spread of CBSD has been studied spatially in fields in different agroecologies. However, within‐host distribution and accumulation of CBSV and UCBSV in naturally infected cassava plants is unknown. Therefore, within‐host CBSV and UCBSV distribution was studied to correlate CBSD symptoms with virus titre in organs of infected cassava. Leaf, stem and storage root samples, with and without symptoms, were collected from 10 genotypes of field‐grown cassava. Presence of CBSV and UCBSV was detected by RT‐PCR and virus levels determined by qRT‐PCR. CBSV was present in 100% of CBSD samples with symptoms, with 45·3% positive for presence of both CBSV and UCBSV. Tolerant cassava genotypes were infected with CBSV alone and accumulated higher titre in roots than in aerial organs. Susceptible genotypes were co‐infected with CBSV and UCBSV and exhibited variation in virus titre in each organ. Across genotypes, virus titre was lowest in the youngest leaves and highest in mature non‐senescing leaves. This information provides insight into the relationship between CBSV, UCBSV and their cassava host, and is valuable for CBSD resistance breeding, epidemiology studies and CBSD control.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Limiting the use of fungicides is due to become an important issue in managing Erysiphe necator (Schwein) Burrill infections in vineyards. The authors determined how three fungicides currently used by vine growers could be managed to control the early stages of an E. necator‐induced epidemic. RESULTS: Leaf‐disc bioassays and field experiments suggested that the protectant quinoxyfen induced minor disruption in E. necator development, but compounds with protectant and curative properties (tebuconazole and trifloxystrobin) caused significant, although different, disruption during E. necator‐induced epidemics. Bioassays showed that each of the antifungals were most effective at different stages of fungal development, tebuconazole before sporulation and trifloxystrobin after sporulation of the colonies. Results from the bioassay also highlighted likely occurrences in the field, where several stages of fungal development are encountered simultaneously. CONCLUSION: The present findings were complementary: leaf‐disc tests showed when the fungicides were most effective at inhibiting E. necator infection cycles; the field trial provided results in terms of incidence and severity of disease on bunches without reference to the pathogenic cycle development.
