Ten fawns and four adult black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in a captive herd died as a result of adenovirus-induced hemorrhagic disease. Acute, systemic infections were characterized by hemorrhagic enteropathy, pulmonary edema, and occasional ulceration of the upper alimentary tract. Localized infections were limited to the upper alimentary tract and included stomatitis, pharyngitis, mandibular osteomyelitis, and rumenitis. In deer with acute, systemic infections, a diagnosis was made by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The serum neutralization test was useful for confirming a diagnosis in animals with prolonged, localized infections. Deer originating from herds with a history of adenovirus infection should not be transferred to other captive herds or released into free-ranging populations because they may serve as carriers of adenovirus. 相似文献

Osteoporosis and other diseases of bone loss are a major public health problem. Here it is shown that the statins, drugs widely used for lowering serum cholesterol, also enhance new bone formation in vitro and in rodents. This effect was associated with increased expression of the bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) gene in bone cells. Lovastatin and simvastatin increased bone formation when injected subcutaneously over the calvaria of mice and increased cancellous bone volume when orally administered to rats. Thus, in appropriate doses, statins may have therapeutic applications for the treatment of osteoporosis. 相似文献

Most protein phosphatases have little intrinsic substrate specificity, making selective pharmacological inhibition of specific dephosphorylation reactions a challenging problem. In a screen for small molecules that protect cells from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, we identified salubrinal, a selective inhibitor of cellular complexes that dephosphorylate eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit alpha (eIF2alpha). Salubrinal also blocks eIF2alpha dephosphorylation mediated by a herpes simplex virus protein and inhibits viral replication. These results suggest that selective chemical inhibitors of eIF2alpha dephosphorylation may be useful in diseases involving ER stress or viral infection. More broadly, salubrinal demonstrates the feasibility of selective pharmacological targeting of cellular dephosphorylation events. 相似文献

To facilitate recovery through captive breeding and foster-parenting programs of the endangered whooping crane, one of two eggs was removed from 62% of nests in Wood Buffalo National Park during 1967-1996. Egg removals were justified because cranes usually rear a single chick; the other dies to siblicide or predation. Concerns exist that the wild population might have recovered even faster if nests had not been disturbed. Here we show, contrary to expectation, that removing one of two eggs from a whooping crane nest actually increases the probability of nest success, and this effect is highly correlated with the dynamics of predators in the nesting area. These results beg the question: why do whooping cranes lay two eggs? We attribute two-egg clutches to occasional “good years” in which both chicks survive, compensating for higher mortality in two-egg broods. Egg removal has benefited conservation allowing establishment of several captive flocks, supporting reintroduction of two new populations, and reducing the variance in reproductive success of the wild flock thereby minimizing extinction risk. 相似文献

Olive oil and fruit samples from six cultivars sampled at four different maturity stages were discriminated into cultivars and maturity stages. The variables-volatile and phenolic compounds-that significantly (p < 0.01) discriminated cultivars and maturity stage groups were identified. Separation by stepwise linear discriminant analysis revealed that Manzanilla olive cultivar was separated from cultivars Leccino, Barnea, Mission, Corregiola, and Paragon, whereas cultivars Corregiola and Paragon formed a cluster. The volatile compounds hexanol, hexanal, and 1-penten-3-ol were responsible for the discrimination of cultivars. All maturity stages were discriminated, with the separation of early stages attributed to oil phenolic compounds, tyrosol and oleuropein derivatives, whereas the volatile compounds (E)-2-hexenal, hexanol, 1-penten-3-ol, and (Z)-2-penten-3-ol characterized the separation of all maturity stages and in particular the late stages. Effects of heavy metals on forest nutrient cycling processes were investigated using intact forest microcosms. Baghouse dust from a primary Pb smelter in southeastern Missouri was applied on the microcosms to approximate one annual deposition of metals at 0.4 km from the smelter. Contaminated litter from a forest adjacent to the smelter was also placed on the microcosms. Total dosage of Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu was 11.0, 0.128, 0.748, and 0.161 mg cm?2, respectively. Sustained increases in leaching rates of Ca and NO3-N were found in microcosms amended with heavy metals. After 20 mo, extractable Ca, NH3-N, NO3-N and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were significantly lower in treated soil to a depth of 5 cm. In addition, extractable NH3-N, NO3-N and DOC were significantly lowered to a depth of 10 cm. Results from this experiment indicate that forest microcosms can be used for determining the effect of heavy metals on forest ecosystems. 相似文献
