Serogroups of Campylobacter fetus and Campylobacter jejuni isolated in cases of ovine abortion

Of 38 aborted ovine fetuses from 23 sheep flocks 29 C. fetus subsp. fetus and 22 C. jejuni were isolated and examined biochemically and serologically for heat-stable antigens. Serologic examinations were carried out by passive haemagglutination test. In case of C. fetus subsp. fetus strains alkaline antigen extraction was used. Antisera to two serogroups of C. fetus and to Penner serotype reference strains 1 to 60 were produced in rabbits. Abortion was caused in 18 (78.3%) flocks by C. fetus subsp. fetus and in 5 (21.7%) flocks by C. jejuni. Six C. fetus subsp. fetus strains grew well at both 43 and 25 degrees C. With one exception all C. fetus subsp. fetus were resistant, whereas all 29 C. fetus subsp. venerealis strains were sensitive to 30 micrograms/ml cefoxitin and cefamandole. These two cephalosporins can be used to differentiate the two subspecies of C. fetus. Passive haemagglutination test using alkaline antigen extraction is a proper method for the examination of heat-stable antigens of both C. fetus subspecies. Out of 24 C. fetus subsp. fetus strains 13 belonged to serogroup A(01), and 11 to serogroup B(02). C. jejuni strains examined belonged to Penner serogroup 1 (6 strains), to serogroup 5 (4 strains) and to serogroup 8 (4 strains).     

Thermal and spectrophotometric analysis of some fungal melanins and soil humic compounds

Seven types of fungal melanins were compared with humic compounds from chernozem and podzol soils and with commercial humic acid. The results indicate some similarities but also distinct differences between the melanins and humic substances in spectral characteristics in the UV and visible regions and in their resistance to thermal degradation.     

Identification of helminth species by means of disc electrophoresis

Soluble proteins of 25 helminth species of the classes Trematoda, Cestoidea and Nematoda, were separated by disc electrophoresis using polyacrylamide gel columns. Differences between the species were investigated on the basis of Rm values of the bands. Protein spectra were complemented by the detection of lipoproteins and glycoproteins and by identification of LDH, SHD, peroxidase, esterase and alkaline phosphatase. On the basis of comparison of protein spectra of parasitic worms belonging to three taxonomic classes it was found by means of numerical taxonomy that individual classes are characterized by a certain number of proteins of the same migration properties.     

Changes in fatty acid and sterol composition during oogenesis in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera

The fatty acid and sterol composition of the oyster Pinctada margaritifera during oogenesis and in eggs was analysed. No major differences were observed during oogenesis, but the egg composition was significantly different from that of gonads. The amount of saturated fatty acids was the highest in eggs and the C16:0 predominant (P<5%); by contrast, the amount of 22:6(n‐3) was significantly lower (P<5%) than in gonads. No major differences were observed for the polar lipid (PL) composition during oogenesis. The main free sterols in gonads and eggs were cholesterol and brassicasterol. Among free sterols, the proportion of cholesterol diminished continuously from the beginning to the end of gonad maturation, and this decrease persisted in eggs after spawning. Cholesterol represented 40% to 55% of the sterol ester encountered in gonad and eggs. This study allowed us to investigate the fatty acid and sterol composition during oogenesis of the pearl oyster P. margaritifera, leading to a clearer understanding of the nutritional requirements of pearl oyster during the reproduction process.     

Introduction of allien variation into wheat by gene recombination. I. Crosses between mono V (5B) Triticum aestivum L. and Secale cereale L. and Aegilops columnaris zhuk.

An analysis is made of meiotic pairing of hybrids whether or not deficient in the chromosome V (5B) from crosses between Mono V (5B) T. aestivum var. Chinese Spring and Secale cereale and Aegilops columnaris. Transmission rates of deficiency are not equal for both combinations. Isochromosomes are found in the hybrid plants.5B deficiency allows the pairing and recombination between the chromosomes of wheat and those of the related species. Such deficiency may be a useful wheat breeding tool to introduce alien variation into such cultivated species.Effectiveness of 5B deficiency on meiotic pairing of the hybrids, measured as the increase of the proportion of complement paired, is 36–37% and 49–50% in the hybrids involving rye and Ae. columnaris respectively. Minimum percentages of the introduction of alien variation into wheat are established for the material investigated: 2% for rye and 28% for Ae. columnaris.Methods of utilisation of the 5B deficiency in a programme of wheat breeding are discussed and outlined.     

Blood and haemoglobin meal as protein sources in diets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata): effects on growth, nutritive efficiency and fillet sensory differences

Two parallel experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of partial substitution of fish meal by two different animal protein sources, blood meal (B) and haemoglobin meal (H) at 0, 50 and 100 g kg⁻¹ of level inclusion in diets for gilthead sea bream, considering a long feeding period for juveniles (Trial 1) and a short feeding period (Trial 2) for on-growing fish. In Trial 1, 33 g juveniles were fed for 242 days and the fish fed with 5% and 10% of haemoglobin dietary inclusion obtained less growth, although feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and muscle composition were similar in all diets. In Trial 2, 179 g initial weight fish were fed for 164 days and growth of fish fed H10 showed the lowest growth, although nutrient efficiency and muscle composition were not affected significantly. The results of these experiments demonstrated that blood meal can substitute fish meal (up to 10%) with no effect on performance, but may lead to sensory differences compared with fish fed diet 0, while the inclusion of 5% blood meal had no effect on growth or sensory characteristics. Fish fed 10% haemoglobin inclusion had the poorest growth values.     

High incidence of abortions and congenital deformities of unknown aetiology in a beef herd

In 1980, 16 abortions or stillbirths occurred and 26 deformed calves were born in a beef herd of 115 Friesian cross Hereford cows mated to Charolais bulls. The deformities were principally arthrogryposes with contractures, particularly of the forelimbs, and various skull abnormalities. Following investigation it was considered highly unlikely that hereditary causes, infectious agents or a nutritional deficiency were responsible. The most likely cause was exposure to an unidentified teratogen early in pregnancy.     

The first occurrence of demodicosis in cattle in Czechoslovakia

Demodectic lesions were found in 37 per cent out of the total number of seventy-five cows examined by palpation in a large cow-house in South Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. These lesions were intradermal nodules, mostly 2 to 6 mm in diameter, located in the corium in the anterior parts of the body. The animals had 1 to 75 lesions (on the average 11.6). Their age was three to seven years. Their overall health condition was good and their behaviour was not affected. Microscopic examination revealed large numbers of Demodex bovis Stiles, 1892, causative agent of demodicosis, in the contents of nodules in five out of six examined animals. Histopathological changes in two nodules were characterized by inflammatory granulomatous structures containing large numbers of mites, epithelioid cells with rich, pale cytoplasm, giant cells of the foreign body type, and inflammatory infiltrates consisting mostly of lymphocytes. Fibroproduction in the contents of granulomas and along their periphery was markedly low.
