The production economics of freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) farming in Hawaii

Detailed cost-return of freshwater prawn farming in Hawaii is estimated for farms ranging in size from a minimum of 1 acre to a maximum of 100 acres. Major factors affecting cost and revenue are discussed. Freshwater prawn farming in Hawaii is profitable at the existing average annual production of 3 000 pounds/acre and at the existing average farm price of $3.00/pound for farms that are 10 acres or larger. Smaller farms are profitable only when operated as a family venture.     

Passive transfer of protective immunity against ichthyophthiriasis from vaccinated mother to fry in tilapias, Oreochromis aureus

Tilapias, Oreochromis aureus, were vaccinated twice with live tomites of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis in physiological saline 1 month before spawning (test group). A control group was similarly treated but with physiological saline only. Fertilized eggs were collected from the mouths of both groups and incubated until the young reached the free-swimming stage. Free-swimming fry were also collected immediately after they were expelled from the mother's mouth in other fish of the two groups. The fry were exposed to infective tomites of I. multifiliis and thereafter returned to their holding tanks. All fry obtained from the controls without mouth-brooding died after tomite exposure. However, fry with mouth-brooding before tomite exposure showed 37.3% survival. On the other hand, fry obtained from vaccinated broodstock without mouth-brooding exhibited 78.4% survival which increased to 95.3% with mouth-brooding. The protective immunity is correlated with the titres of anti-I. multifiliis antibodies in the soluble extracts of fry tissues and the mother's plasma. The results clearly indicate that protective immunity against ichthyophthiriasis “ich” in tilapia fry can not only be derived directly from the mother via eggs but also be acquired indirectly from the mouth cavity during the brooding period. The results thus suggest that proper vaccination of mothers before spawning would effectively protect fry against a protozoan disease.     

Promoting effects of activated Nodal signal pathway on definitive endoderm induction from mouse embryonic stem cells

AIM: To study the process of promoting mouse embryonic stem cells (ESC) to specify to definitive endoderm by up-regulating of Nodal signal pathway in order to find the best cultivated systems of differentiation of mouse ESC to definitive endoderm cells. METHODS: The cells were divided into different groups based on the culture medium: ESC group (serum-free medium + LIF), natural differentiation group (serum-free medium) and activin A group (serum-free medium +50μg/L activin A). The cells and the sterilized coverslips with cells were collected at 1, 3, 5 and 7 d of the cultivation. The proportion of CXCR4⁺ cells was detected by flow cytometry. The expression of CXCR4 was determined by immunocytochemical method, and the protein expression of OCT4 and CXCR4 was detected by Western blot. RESULTS: The proportion of CXCR4⁺ cells showed no dramatic change in ESC group along with the extending of cultivation day, while there were gradually increased in natural differentiation group and activin A group and the highest level was observed at 5 d. Among the 3 groups, the proportion of CXCR4⁺ cells at 5 d was the highest in activin A group. The brown or tan staining in the cells observed under microscope was considered as positive CXCR4 by immunocytochemistry. The protein levels of OCT4 and CXCR4 in ESC group along with the extending of cultivation days was observed. The expression levels of OCT4 were gradually decreased in the cells in natural differentiation group and activin A group, while those of CXCR4 were gradually increased with the highest level at 5 d. It was highest in the cells in activin A group. CONCLUSION: The proportion of definitive endoderm was the highest at 5 d of the induction during in vitro mouse ESC differentiation. Up-regulation of Nodal signal pathway by adding activin A at the early stage of mouse ESC differentiation promotes mouse ESC to specify to definitive endoderm with CXCR4 molecular marker.     

Genomic Sequence and Experimental Tractability of a New Decapod Shrimp Model,Neocaridina denticulata

The speciose Crustacea is the largest subphylum of arthropods on the planet after the Insecta. To date, however, the only publically available sequenced crustacean genome is that of the water flea, Daphnia pulex, a member of the Branchiopoda. While Daphnia is a well-established ecotoxicological model, previous study showed that one-third of genes contained in its genome are lineage-specific and could not be identified in any other metazoan genomes. To better understand the genomic evolution of crustaceans and arthropods, we have sequenced the genome of a novel shrimp model, Neocaridina denticulata, and tested its experimental malleability. A library of 170-bp nominal fragment size was constructed from DNA of a starved single adult and sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq2000 platform. Core eukaryotic genes, the mitochondrial genome, developmental patterning genes (such as Hox) and microRNA processing pathway genes are all present in this animal, suggesting it has not undergone massive genomic loss. Comparison with the published genome of Daphnia pulex has allowed us to reveal 3750 genes that are indeed specific to the lineage containing malacostracans and branchiopods, rather than Daphnia-specific (E-value: 10⁻⁶). We also show the experimental tractability of N. denticulata, which, together with the genomic resources presented here, make it an ideal model for a wide range of further aquacultural, developmental, ecotoxicological, food safety, genetic, hormonal, physiological and reproductive research, allowing better understanding of the evolution of crustaceans and other arthropods.

小茴香果实营养价值的研究

本文对托县小茴香果实进行了比较全面的营养成份测定，并对数据进行研究分析。测定结果表明：小茴香果实营养丰富，含蛋白质１８．９８％；脂肪１６．２２％，Ｖ＿Ｅ２．６７７ｍｇ／１００ｇ，Ｖ＿Ｂ１．６０ｍｇ／１００ｇ，Ｓｅ０．４７６ｍｇ／ｋｇ，胡萝卜素２．７９６ｍｇ／１００ｇ，还含有１７种氨基酸及多种微量元素，总能量高达４９９５ｋＣＵＩ／ｋｇ，这将为进一步合理开发利用小茴香资源提供有力的依据。     

Photochemical Production of Formaldehyde in Earth's Primitive Atmosphere

Formaldehyde could have been produced by photochemical reactions in Earth's primitive atmosphere, at a time when it consisted mainly of molecular nitrogen, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Removal of formaldehyde from the atmosphere by precipitation can provide a source of organic carbon to the oceans at the rate of 10(11) moles per year. Subsequent reactions of formaldehyde in primeval aquatic environments would have implications for the abiotic synthesis of complex organic molecules and the origin of life.     

Marine bioactives as functional food ingredients: potential to reduce the incidence of chronic diseases

The marine environment represents a relatively untapped source of functional ingredients that can be applied to various aspects of food processing, storage, and fortification. Moreover, numerous marine-based compounds have been identified as having diverse biological activities, with some reported to interfere with the pathogenesis of diseases. Bioactive peptides isolated from fish protein hydrolysates as well as algal fucans, galactans and alginates have been shown to possess anticoagulant, anticancer and hypocholesterolemic activities. Additionally, fish oils and marine bacteria are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, while crustaceans and seaweeds contain powerful antioxidants such as carotenoids and phenolic compounds. On the basis of their bioactive properties, this review focuses on the potential use of marine-derived compounds as functional food ingredients for health maintenance and the prevention of chronic diseases.     

Oleifolioside A mediates caspase-independent human cervical carcinoma HeLa cell apoptosis involving nuclear relocation of mitochondrial apoptogenic factors AIF and EndoG

Apoptosis, the main type of programmed cell death, plays an essential role in a variety of biological events. Whereas "classical" apoptosis is dependent on caspase activation, caspase-independent death is increasingly recognized as an alternative pathway. To develop new anticancer agents, oleifolioside A was isolated from Dendropanax morbifera Leveille and the biochemical mechanisms of oleifolioside A-induced apoptosis in HeLa cells were investigated. Exposure to oleifolioside A resulted in caspase activation and typical features of apoptosis, although cell death was not prevented by caspase inhibition. Oleifolioside A treatment induced up-regulation of Bad, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, nuclear relocation of mitochondrial factors, apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), endonuclease G (EndoG), and apoptosis induction. This is the first report of anticancer activity of oleifolioside A, and nuclear translocation of AIF and EndoG in oleifolioside A-treated HeLa cells might represent an alternative death signaling pathway in the absence of caspase activity.     

Behaviour of price transmissions in vertically coordinated markets: The case of frozen black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon)*

Abstract

This study analyses the behaviour of the price transmission process for the leading cultured shrimp species, black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), in both forward and backward directions between Thai and Indonesian shrimp packer markets and the Japan Tokyo wholesale market. The bivariate cointegration approach using the Engle‐Granger two‐stage estimation procedure is applied in this study. The results show that Tokyo wholesale prices appear to have stronger backward influences on the formation of overseas contract prices used by Japanese shrimp importers in the Thai and Indonesian shrimp packer markets. In addition, there is a tendency for the speed of price transmissions in the long term to increase with increasing size class (from 26 to 30–21–25 and 16–20 counts per pound) of black tiger shrimp, regardless of estimation specification in the direction of price transmissions and the shrimp country of origin.
