Compost leachate poses a threat to the environment because it contains many organic and inorganic pollutants. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) has been reported at values above 5000 mg/l O2. Heavy metals, such as nickel, lead, chromium are also present within these waters. Thus, in order to comply with the increasingly stringent environmental quality standards such contaminants must be removed effectively. The research approach in this paper is directed towards chelating pre-treatment procedures. Nontoxic and biodegradable biopolymer chitosan was used as a chelator for the removal of dissolved metals from compost leachate. The influence of chemical conditions regarding the chelation efficiency was studied in model solutions. The optimal treatment conditions were applied onto compost leachate which was analysed further regarding metals. In addition, the influence of chitosan was studied on compost leachate toxicity. The most important aspect of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of waste chitosan recycling. Thus, the chitosan chelates were subjected to the electrospinning procedure in order to develop new nano-porous structures, such as, for example, conductive textiles. 相似文献

Chondrichthyan populations in the Mediterranean Sea have been heavily affected by the impact of fishing activities. In the last two decades, even fishing gears that were traditionally considered highly selective, such as pelagic longlines, have been revealed to be responsible for the capture of many unwanted species. The pelagic stingray (Pteroplatytrygon violacea) is not an endangered nor a charismatic species, but it largely dominates longlines bycatch fractions.The aim of our study was to investigate the importance of three main variables, bait size, presence and type of light attractors, and hook size and shape, in the capture rate of pelagic stingrays. Ninety-seven longline experimental sets were run. Trials took place on nine vessels in the Strait of Sicily, central Mediterranean Sea, over a period of 3 years from 2005 to 2007. Results showed that the larger the J hook, the lower the stingray capture rate. Moreover, 16/0 circle hooks had a significantly lower number of stingrays captured per 1000 hooks than J hooks, up to ∼80%. Bait size, within the range of sizes assessed, and use of light attractors did not have significant effects on stingray catch rate. These results suggest that the adoption of large circle hooks by commercial and artisanal swordfish longlining may be a measure to reduce their environmental footprint. 相似文献

Laurus nobilis L. leaves are widely used in cooking and in folk medicine. Five new megastigmane glucosides (2-4, 7, and 9) named laurosides A-E and a new phenolic glucoside 12 were isolated from the methanolic extract of L. nobilis L. leaves, along with 10 known components: megastigmane (5), megastigmane glucosides (1, 6, 8, 10, and 11), aromatic compounds (13 and 14), and flavonoids (15 and 16). The simultaneous determination of 19 phenolic compounds was performed directly in wort and beer by a combination of reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with coulometric array detection. Chromatographic separation was achieved with an appropriate gradient of flow and a binary solvent based on phosphate buffer, methanol, and acetonitrile in a 45-min run. Eight serial coulometric detectors were used for on-line generation of voltammetric data to resolve coeluting compounds. The method was reliable and sensitive, the regression coefficient of standard calibration curves is 0.972 < or = r < or = 1.000, and the standard deviation value ranges from 0.010 to 0.129 mg/L for wort and from 0.002 to 0.332 mg/L for beer. The mean concentrations of phenolic acids were 22.1 and 33.8 mg/L, respectively, in worts and beers produced in Italy. These amounts represent 5 and 10% of the non-tannic, non-flavonoid phenols in wort and beer, respectively. 相似文献

The incidence of cardiovascular disease and endothelial dysfunction is low in the Mediterranean area, where the major proportion of daily calories comes from plant food, high in antioxidant polyphenols. It has been shown that a reduced production or enhanced inactivation of endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) is involved in the onset of endothelial dysfunction. We investigated the effects of Mediterranean wild plant, that is, wild artichoke and thyme, phenolic-rich extracts on NO release by porcine aortic endothelial cells (PAECs; by using indirect methods) and by cerebral cell membrane homogenates (by using direct NO detection). NO release by PAECs was significantly potentiated by 234% and 135% by wild artichoke and thyme extracts (10(-6) mol/L), respectively. Direct detection of NO release by brain membranes also showed significantly increased NO production after wild artichoke addition (+35.4%). Further, the release of another vasorelaxant factor by PAECs, that is, prostacyclin, was significantly increased by wild artichoke and thyme (10(-6) mol/L) (+269% and +190%, respectively). Investigation of the mechanism(s) of action of wild artichoke and thyme suggests maintenance of an intracellular reduced environment, as previously shown for ascorbate. Even though these data require in vivo confirmation, they suggest that regular intake of bioactive compounds from Mediterranean wild plants contributes to maintenance of proper vasomotion and to the low incidence of atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction recorded in the Mediterranean area. 相似文献
