The objective of this study was the characterization of the nutritive value, ruminal fermentation and nutrient digestibility of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) hay (FPH) by‐product through in situ, in vitro and in vivo tests. A FPH diet was administered ad libitum to four sheep (live weight (LW) 38.0 ± 2.0 kg) at four inclusion levels (0, 25, 50 and 75%) over a conventional sorghum grain/oat straw ration in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. The in situ degradability of FPH was 67% dry matter (DM), 71% crude protein and 66% neutral detergent fiber (NDF). The inclusion of FPH did not affect (P ≥ 0.05) the DM (61 ± 0.4 g/LW0.75/day) and organic matter (OM) intake (56 ± 0.7 g/LW0.75/day). Total DM digestibility (68 ± 2.5%), OM (70 ± 3%), and NDF (60 ± 3%), were not different (P ≥ 0.05) between control and FPH inclusion diets. The diet had no effect on ruminal pH, ruminal ammonia concentration, total and individual volatile fatty acids. The chemical composition and sheep intake behavior indicate that FPH by‐product is medium quality forage when incorporated in maintenance rations. 相似文献

Biological clocks are self-sustained oscillators that adjust their phase to the daily environmental cycles in a process known as entrainment. Molecular dissection and mathematical modeling of biological oscillators have progressed quite far, but quantitative insights on the entrainment of clocks are relatively sparse. We simultaneously tracked the phases of hundreds of synthetic genetic oscillators relative to a common external stimulus to map the entrainment regions predicted by a detailed model of the clock. Synthetic oscillators were frequency-locked in wide intervals of the external period and showed higher-order resonance. Computational simulations indicated that natural oscillators may contain a positive-feedback loop to robustly adapt to environmental cycles. 相似文献

The effect of enzymatic treatments using a commercial enzyme (Econase-cep at pH 5.0 and 0.1% w/w concentration) at different
levels of dehydrated marigold meal (5, 10, 15 and 20% dry weight), to enhance carotenoid extraction, was evaluated. The AOAC
method consisting of a simultaneous extraction and saponification by using hexane-ethanol-acetonetoluene (10:6:7:7 v/v) and
metanolic KOH (40% w/v) was used to evaluate the carotenoid content. The measurement of carotenoids was also carried out in
samples in which the water soluble compounds were previously eliminated (AOAC-H2O). Total carotenoids ranged from 11.4 to 17. 4 g/kg and 18 to 24.7 g/kg of control and treated marigold meal, respectively.
Highest amount of carotenoids were noted when 5% level of treated meal was used. 相似文献

Two common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties were seeded in the same location, harvested and cleaned. Three hardening procedures were used (soaking in acetate buffer, pH 4.1 at 37°C for 5 h; storage at 37°C, 100% RH for 28 days; and storage at 31–33°C, 76% RH for 120 days) to have seeds in a hard-to-cook (HTC) state. The adverse effects of HTC condition, in terms of cooking time as assessed by a Mattson bean cooker, were practically eliminated by soaking seeds in salt solutions (1% NaCl+0.75% NaHCO3; and 0.75% NaHCO3) instead of only water. Ultrastructural changes of cotyledon cells from fresh, HTC and softened seeds were observed. Results of this study may be used for the development of a technological procedure to utilize properly HTC beans generated by unefficient storage systems. 相似文献

The potential use of quality protein transgenic maize (genetically modified maize with the cDNA of amarantin) for preparation of flour and tortillas through an extrusion lime cooking process was investigated. Tortillas from extruded transgenic maize flour had similar physicochemical and sensory properties than those from the commercial brand MASECA™; however, the former had the highest (P < 0.05) protein content (12.91 vs 8.93%, db), essential amino acids content, calculated protein efficiency ratio (C-PER; 2.27 vs 0.90) and protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS; 55.54 vs 30.18%) and therefore they were nutritionally better. The use of transgenic maize for flour and tortilla preparation through an extrusion lime cooking process may have a positive impact on the nutritional status of people from countries where maize is the basic staple food. It also represents an alternative process to nixtamalization that requires little energy and water, it does not generate wastewater, and all components of the maize kernel are retained. 相似文献

Tropical grasses are the primary nutrient resource for cattle production in the tropics, and they provide low-cost nutrients
to cattle. However, its production is constrained by seasonal changes and quality; hence, appropriate usage of relatively
inexpensive agricultural by-products is important to profitable livestock production. The objective of the study was to evaluate
the effect of supplementing coffee pulp to dairy cows grazing tropical grasses on milk yield and forage intake. Four multiparous
crossed Holstein–Brown Swiss–Zebu cows of similar weight and milk yield were used. The effect of 10%, 15% and 20% inclusion
of coffee pulp in dairy concentrates on milk yield and forage intake was analysed using a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Results
showed that there were no significant effects (P > 0.05) in grass dry matter intake, milk yield, milk composition body weight and body condition score due to the inclusion
of coffee pulp in the dairy concentrates. It is concluded that coffee pulp can be included at levels of 20% in the concentrate
without compromising significantly (P > 0.05) milk yield, milk composition and grass dry matter intake. It also was concluded that cost of concentrate is reduced

Microbial transglutaminase (MTGase), a protein‐glutamine γ‐glutamyl transferase (E.C. 2.3.2.13), catalyzes acyl transfer reactions by introducing a covalent cross‐link between l ‐lysine and l ‐glutamine residues. The use of this enzyme has been proposed as an improver to increase dough strength. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the effect of MTGase on different fractions of dough proteins found in hard, soft, and durum wheat. Three different concentrations of the MTGase (0, 5, and 10U/g of gluten) were tested. Moisture, protein, and dry gluten contents were determined for each concentration in addition to rheological measurements done with the farinograph. Following each treatment, the dough proteins were extracted and analyzed by SE‐HPLC and RP‐HPLC. Soluble polymeric protein, gliadins, albumins, and globulins were quantified in addition to the gliadin subclasses and glutenin subunit types. The combustion procedure was used to determine the amount of insoluble polymeric protein. Differences were observed in susceptibility to MTGase catalysis among the dough proteins of the cultivars studied: the cultivar Cortazar (soft wheat) was the most susceptible. The proteins of this cultivar had a characteristically higher amount of ω and α+β gliadins when compared with the other cultivars. As reported earlier, solubility of high molecular weight glutenin subunits and ω‐gliadins was reduced because of the MTGase treatment. However, all gliadin subclasses, including the γ and α+β gliadins, also participated in cross‐linking. The proteins of the cultivar Altar (durum wheat) were the least susceptible to the effects of MTGase. In recent years plastination has begun to revolutionize the way in which human and veterinary gross anatomy can be presented to students. The study reported here assessed the efficacy of plastinated organs as teaching resources in an innovative anatomy teaching/learning system. The main objective was to evaluate whether the use of plastinated organs improves the quality of teaching and learning of anatomy. For this purpose, we used an interdepartmental approach involving the departments of Veterinary Anatomy, Human Anatomy, Veterinary Surgery, and Education Development and Research Methods. The knowledge base of control and experimental student groups was examined before and after use of the fixed or plastinated resources, respectively, to gather information evaluating the effectiveness of these teaching resources. Significant differences (p < 0.001) between control and experimental groups of Human and Veterinary Anatomy were observed in the post-test results. The Veterinary Surgery students had the most positive opinion of the use of plastinated specimens. Using these data, we were able to quantitatively characterize the use of plastinated specimens as anatomy teaching resources. This analysis showed that all the plastinated resources available were heavily used and deemed useful by students. Although the properties of plastinated specimens accommodate student needs at various levels, traditional material should be used in conjunction with plastinated resources. 相似文献

Clostridium perfringens type D-producing epsilon toxin is a common cause of death in sheep and goats worldwide. Although anti-epsilon toxin serum antibodies have been detected in healthy non-vaccinated sheep, the information regarding naturally acquired antibodies in ruminants is scanty. The objective of the present report was to characterize the development of naturally acquired antibodies against C. perfringens epsilon toxin in goats. The levels of anti-epsilon toxin antibodies in blood serum of goat kids from two different herds were examined continuously for 14 months. Goats were not vaccinated against any clostridial disease and received heterologous colostrums from cows that were not vaccinated against any clostridial disease. During the survey one of these flocks suffered an unexpectedly severe C. perfringens type D enterotoxemia outbreak. The results showed that natural acquired antibodies against C. perfringens epsilon toxin can appear as early as 6 weeks in young goats and increase with the age without evidence of clinical disease. The enterotoxemia outbreak was coincident with a significant increase in the level of anti-epsilon toxin antibodies. 相似文献
