Improvement of rapeseed protein nutritional value

Although the efficiency ratio (PER) of vegetable proteins can be improved by supplementation with the limiting free amino acids, the digestibility of these proteins remains lower than that of animal proteins. The digestibility of a rapeseed protein concentrate measured in rats was improved from a value of 81 to 87% by water solubilization and ammonium sulfate precipitation. 2S and 12S fractions were also prepared from a rapeseed protein concentrate by a method based on differences of solubility in ammonium sulfate solutions. Protein digestibility of the rapeseed protein concentrate was found to be 82%, as compared to 87% and 89% for 2S and 12S fractions. A reduction of protein efficiency ratio was also recorded and was found to result from losses in amino acids.     

Combined use of surgery and radiation in the treatment of an intradural myxoid liposarcoma in a dog

An intradural-extramedullary myxoid liposarcoma of the high cervical spine was diagnosed in a 9-year-old, spayed female Cavalier King Charles spaniel that was presented for a 2-month history of cervical pain and tetraparesis. Radiation therapy applied after surgery resulted in complete remission of the neurological deficits. The tumor recurred 18 months after surgical excision. A second surgery and another course of radiotherapy again resulted in complete remission of the clinical signs. The dog was euthanized 11 months after the second surgery because of tumor recurrence.     

Familial aortic aneurysm in Leonberg dogs

A thoracic aortic aneurysm was diagnosed in a 6-month-old male Leonberg dog by use of radiography, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The aneurysm was associated with a twisted ascending aorta and dilatation of several other thoracic arteries (pulmonary trunk, brachiocephalic trunk, and left subclavian artery). Histologic examination of the aorta revealed cystic medial necrosis, with disruption of the elastic network, collagen fibers, and the muscle glycoprotein fibrillin-1. The dam and sire of the dog and 8 littermates were examined by use of transthoracic echocardiography. The sire and 1 male littermate also had an aneurysm of the ascending aorta. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of familial aortic aneurysm in dogs.     

Reliable ELISAs showing differences between resistant and susceptible lines in hens orally inoculated with Salmonella Enteritidis

Reliable ELISAs were investigated with the aim to select hen lines resistant to Salmonella Enteritidis and producing high levels of antibodies. In the first experiment, the relation between the humoral response and the bacteriological results was assessed on hens from the Y11 resistant line and the L2 susceptible line, orally inoculated with 10(8) CFU S. Enteritidis per animal. Anti-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) IgG titres were higher but the liver and spleen were less contaminated in hens from the Y11 line than in hens from the L2 line (p = 0.013, 0.031 and 0.026 respectively). In the second experiment, the hens were inoculated orally with 1.7 x 10(8) CFU S. Enteritidis per animal in order to select the ELISA methods showing the more significant differences. ELISAs were based on LPS, flagella, LPS from rough (LPS-R) and smooth strains (LPS-S) and detected IgG and IgM antibodies from sera and yolks. No between-line host response variation was observed in the yolk, with LPS-S and R antigens nor with anti-LPS IgM in the sera. Otherwise, significant differences were encountered between hen lines with the ELISAs performed on the sera detecting anti-LPS IgG, anti-flagella IgG or IgM (p = 0.017, 0.017 and p < 0.001 respectively). When comparing the kinetics of the selected ELISAs, the IgG antibodies against LPS detected between-line variations as early as 1 to 4 weeks pi, whereas with IgG against flagella, the differences were only detected at 1 and 2 weeks pi and with IgM against flagella, the differences were significant at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks pi. In conclusion, resistant hen lines producing higher levels of antibodies than the susceptible hen lines may be selected with these ELISAs.     

Progressive myelopathy due to a spontaneous intramedullary hematoma in a dog: pre- and postoperative clinical and magnetic resonance imaging follow-up

A 4-year-old, male Jack Russell terrier was presented for a 6-month history of progressive right hemiparesis with episodic cervical hyperesthesia. The neurological examination showed a right-sided, upper motoneuron syndrome and partial Horner's syndrome. Two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations were performed 3 months apart and revealed a persistent cervical intramedullary hematoma. A dorsal myelotomy was performed. A subacute hematoma was confirmed histologically without underlying lesions. Eighteen months later, the dog's clinical signs were minimal. Two MRI examinations were performed 2 weeks and 5 months after surgery and revealed regressing signal abnormalities at the surgical site, consistent with a surgical scar.

Quality of used-snow discharged in the ST-Lawrence river,in the region of the Montreal Harbor

Snow disposal creates problems each year in Montreal. Snow dumping in water courses is favored due to both esthetic and economic considerations. Used snow must be considered as a potential pollutant. Its impact on the aquatic receiving environment is not well known. With river dumping in progress, snow samples were collected at 3 sites: Concorde Bridge, and at piers 30 and 52 in Montreal Harbor. Analysis of 28 routine parameters demonstrated that the quality of snow ultimately dumped in the river varies considerably according to its sources and the time it remains in the streets. Used-snow from residential areas was shown to be less polluted than the snow from commercial areas. Furthermore, from the total number of sampled districts, used-snow dumped at pier 30 appears to be relatively more polluted as it originated from downtown areas where vehicle circulation is more dense. Heavy metals in particles sizes between 0.45 and 63 μm represented more than 70% of the measured suspended solids which reflects the risk of bioaccumulation via benthic organisms. Principal component analysis of present data suggests that with analysis of chlorides, suspended solids and Pb alone, it is possible to approximately determine the quality of used-snow.
