The dynamic mechanical properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan δ of banana fiber reinforced PF composites fabricated by RTM and CM techniques were investigated as a function of fiber content, fiber treatment, temperature and frequency. Storage modulus (E′) increases with increase in fiber content and records maximum for the composites having a fiber loading of 40 wt % at all temperature ranges. The loss modulus and damping increases to great extent by the addition of filler, a maximum was observed for filler with 10–20 wt % fiber content followed by a slight decrease in loss modulus and damping with increasing filler content. Alkali treatment of the fiber shows a great enhancement in E′ and T g of the composites. Comparison is made between the composites fabricated by RTM and CM. RTM composites exhibited higher storage modulus and lower damping compared to CM composites.  相似文献

Malathion stimulated sheep brain glutamate dehydrogenase. The maximal velocity (Vmax) and Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) showed alterations characteristic of nonessential activation. The activation energy required by the enzyme subjected to pesticidal stress was found to decrease, suggesting a decrement in energy barrier for the catalysis of the enzyme. The possible implications of malathion-stimulated glutamate dehydrogenase activity are discussed.  相似文献

Mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruíz and Pavón), an Andean tuber with high antioxidant activity, has sparked interest because of its traditional medicinal use. In this study, we evaluated the anthocyanin composition for three purple mashua genotypes and their contribution to the overall antioxidant activity of the tuber. Mashua anthocyanins, total phenolics, and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) antioxidant activity ranged from 45.5 to 131.9 mg of cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalents/100 g fresh weight (FW), 174.9 to 275.5 mg of gallic acid equivalents/100 g of FW, and 16.2 to 45.7 micromol of Trolox equivalents/g of FW, respectively. The high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD) and HPLC-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI/MS-MS) profiles revealed the presence of 11 different anthocyanins. The two major pigments (56.4-73.0% total area range at 520 nm) were identified as delphinidin 3-glucoside-5-acetylrhamnoside and delphinidin 3-sophoroside-5-acetylrhamnoside. Other pigments were delphinidin 3-glucoside-5-rhamnoside, delphinidin 3-sophoroside-5-rhamnoside, delphinidin 3-glucoside, cyanidin 3-sophoroside, and cyanidin 3-sophoroside-5-rhamnoside. Cyanidin 3-glucoside and cyanidin 3-rutinoside were only found in two genotypes, while pelargonidin 3-sophoroside and pelargonidin 3-sophoroside-5-rhamnoside were only found in the third one. Anthocyanins from mashua were the major contributors to the total ABTS values for only one of the three genotypes, suggesting that other phenolics present are playing a major role in the antioxidant power of mashua tubers. Results from this study provide important information for the Nutraceutical and Functional Food Market for the use of mashua anthocyanins not only as a source of natural colorants but also as a source of phytonutrients.  相似文献

Properties of modified starches from partial waxy wheats have not been examined. Protease digestion of cracked kernels of three hard winter wheats varying in amylose content led to 82–85% recovery of starch, whereas kneading of the flour-water doughs gave 75–83% recovery. All starches had a protein content of <0.3% and ash content of <0.01%. Granule size distributions showed that starch from Ike kernels contained 86% A-type granules with a peak size of ≈18μm, and Karl-92 starch contained 77% A-type granules with a peak size of ≈16μm. The A-type granules (82%) from Rio Blanco starch were intermediate in size. The amylose content of Karl-92 starch, determined by concanavalin-A precipitation of amylpectin, was 28%, which was 17% higher than that of Ike starch (23%). The amylose content of Rio Blanco starch was 26%. The lipid content of Karl-92 starch, determined as fatty acid methyl esters, also was 18% higher than that of Ike starch (601 vs. 488 mg/100 g of starch, respectively). Wheat starches were modified with hydroxypropyl (HP) groups to low (1.5–2.5%) and medium (≈4.0%) levels, and the HP starches were cross-linked with phosphoryl chloride at levels of 0.003–0.075%. Pasting curves (amylograms) showed that Ike starch substituted with a low level of HP and optimally cross-linked with 0.025% phosphoryl chloride (starch basis) had a greater paste consistency than low HP cross-linked Karl-92, and Rio Blanco starches. At 4% HP and optimum cross-linking (0.003% phosphoryl chloride), the paste consistencies of the modified starches were nearly the same. The clarity of unmodified Ike starch paste was higher than that of Karl-92 or Rio Blanco starch pastes, and the clarity of all three pastes decreased as cross-linking was increased. Unmodified Ike starch formed a stronger gel than unmodified Karl-92 and Rio Blanco starches, but gel properties largely converged as the starches were modified.  相似文献

A domestic shorthair cat was presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at The University of the West Indies with a history of anorexia, ataxia, and lethargy. On physical examination, moderate abdominal distension and a palpable abdominal fluid wave were noted. Dark yellow, cloudy fluid was collected via abdominocentesis. Fluid analysis indicated that the effusion was a transudate containing low numbers of macrophages and occasional neutrophils. Some of the macrophages contained rod-shaped nonstaining structures of variable length (2-4 um). These structures were also seen extracellularly in low numbers. The morphology of the structures was suggestive of Mycobacterium. The cat's condition continued to deteriorate, and it died within a few hours of being admitted. Further diagnostic tests revealed feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection with concurrent Mycobacterium avium subsp hominissuis infection. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of nontubercular mycobacterial-related ascites in a cat.  相似文献

A micropropagation protocol was developed for Celastrus paniculatus, a vulnerable medicinal plant. Cultures were initiated from nodal explants collected from young shoots of a 12-year-old plant in MS basal medium. An average of five shoots were produced in MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg l−1 benzyl adenine (BA) and 0.1 mg l−1 naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) after two subculture cycles with a 30-day interval. Continuous subculture in the same medium for three more cycles resulted in reduction of the number of multiple shoots (2 or 3 shoots), vitrification of the shoots, and callus formation. Vitrification of cultures could be overcome by the use of MS medium supplemented with lower concentrations of BA (0.05 mg l−1) and NAA (0.01 mg l−1). Among the various rooting trials, ex vitro rooting of shoots with simultaneous hardening was most efficient. The method standardized in the present study is simple, as it eliminated separate steps for in vitro rooting and hardening. Qualitative chemical similarity of the tissue culture regenerants with the mother plant was confirmed using high performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) profiling.  相似文献

Shiga toxin‐producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are foodborne pathogens that can cause severe diseases, including bloody diarrhoea and kidney failure, in humans, while remaining harmless to its primary reservoir hosts, cattle. Antibiotics such as azithromycin, fosfomycin and meropenem are being used and recommended in the treatment of early‐stage STEC (mainly E. coli O157:H7) infections, as these are reportedly effective in preventing Shiga toxin release and kidney failure while eliminating the pathogen. However, antibiotic resistance among STEC isolates could negatively impact these and other similar treatment options while contributing towards the spread of antibiotic resistance genes especially if encoded on mobile genetic elements like plasmids. Antibiotic resistance among STEC isolates recovered from animals and patients is being reported globally. A comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of antibiotic‐resistant STEC (AR‐STEC) and the mechanisms promoting this resistance among these bacteria could help direct therapies and develop strategies to effectively reduce/eliminate these pathogens. Here, we have reviewed literature from the past three decades to gain insights on this prevalence and its impact on human infections. In addition, we have reviewed various strategies proposed by researchers to control STEC that in turn would be applicable to AR‐STEC as well.  相似文献

Insecticidal activity of menthol derivatives against mosquitoes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
BACKGROUND: The insecticidal activity of essential oil of Mentha piperita L. emend. Huds. against local mosquitoes as disease vectors was recognized and found to be due to the presence of menthol, which is the major aroma compound of the oil. The minor compounds of the oil, i.e. menthone, beta-caryophyllene, menthyl acetate, limonene, alpha-pinene and pulegone, showed either less or no activity against the mosquitoes tested. L-Menthol derivatives were synthesized and their knockdown effect and mortality were evaluated against local mosquitoes of Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Aedes aegypti L. and Anopheles tessellatus Theobald as disease vectors. This is the first report of mosquitocidal activity of menthol and its derivatives against Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and An. tessellatus. RESULTS: Derivative synthesis followed by structure-activity relationship studies identified several derivatives, i.e. menthyl chloroacetate, menthyl dichloroacetate, menthyl cinnamate, menthone glyceryl acetal, thymol, alpha-terpineol and mugetanol, with enhanced mosquitocidal activity against Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and An. tessellatus relative to the parent compound L-menthone. CONCLUSION: In ester derivatives of L-menthol the optimum activity is dependent on the size and shape of the ester group and the presence of chlorine atoms in the ester group. In structurally related derivatives of L-menthol the optimum activity is dependent on the aromaticity, the degree of unsaturation, the position of the hydroxy group and the type of functional group.  相似文献

Hyperglycemia causes increased protein glycation and the formation of early glycation products and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) which are major factors responsible for the complications associated with diabetes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antioxidant as well as antiglycative potential of ethyl acetate fraction of guava leaves. Oral administration of the extract at different doses showed a significant decrease in blood glucose level. It also showed an improved antioxidant potential as evidenced by decreased lipid peroxidation and a significant increase in the activity of various antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase. Glycated hemoglobin as well as fructosamine which are indicators of glycation was also reduced significantly in treated groups when compared to diabetic control. In vitro studies also support the antioxidant as well as antiglycative potential of guava leaves.  相似文献
