Interspecific interaction among sympatric ungulates is important in management and conservation. We investigated behavioral interference between sympatric wild or semidomestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) and sheep (Ovis aries) in two field studies and one enclosure experiment. For free-ranging wild and semidomestic reindeer, interference between the two species increased with decreasing distances, occurring only at less than 200 m and 30 m, for wild and semidomestic reindeer, respectively, and neither species consistently dominated the other. In a controlled, duplicated experiment we tested interference and confrontations at the feeding patch level among semidomestic reindeer and sheep within 40 × 50 m enclosures. When new reindeer or sheep were introduced into enclosures already occupied by reindeer, new reindeer resulted in significantly more interference and confrontations among individuals compared to new sheep; i.e., intraspecific interference was more prevalent than interspecific interference at equal densities. For all study areas, confrontations decreased with time after “first encounter,” indicating cohabituation. A sympatric use of pastures was not visually disruptive for recorded grazing behavior for either species.  相似文献

The role of seed producer cooperatives (SPCs) in the Ethiopian seed sector and their contribution to seed supply improvement have received attention from researchers, policymakers, and development partners. However, limited work has been done in reviewing and documenting their involvement in the seed sector development. In this paper, we review and discuss the SPCs in the Ethiopian seed sector. Specifically, we reflect on the contribution of SPCs to improving seed availability and access in the country. The current liberal market system of Ethiopia creates new opportunities for growth as successful enterprises, but also brings new challenges, such as more intense competition for smallholder producers. The government policy encourages SPCs to engage in seed business. We draw on scientific literature, reports, white papers, project documents, and websites. The review reveals that the seed sector in Ethiopia consists of three seed systems: formal, informal, and intermediary seed systems. Each seed system has a specific contribution to the delivery of seed to farmers, but they vary in their approach and respective strategies. The SPCs are categorized in the intermediary seed system because they have features of both formal and informal seed systems. They play a key role in meeting seed demand and contribute greatly to seed supply improvement through high-volume production of seed, crop, and variety diversification, and seed delivery to farmers. They produce and market the seed through various market channels, including direct sales to farmers, sales through contractual agreement, and sales directly to institutional buyers. Their contribution to improving the seed supply and seed security has received considerable recognition by policymakers and development practitioners. Therefore, government and development partners should support and strengthen SPCs to maximize their success in the seed business and their contribution to improving the seed supply in Ethiopia.  相似文献

The study was conducted in East Shewa, central Ethiopia, where durum wheat landraces were once popular, but were displaced and re-introduced. Combinations of survey techniques are employed to document the different home uses of durum wheat landraces and to assess whether these serve as an incentive to on-farm conservation. The findings reveal that wheat landraces have multiple dietary and sociocultural uses that contribute to the maintenance of landraces on-farm. Temporal analysis of historical information showed that (1) richness in food traditions is associated with a high level of landrace diversity on-farm; (2) food traditions in East Shewa did not change radically as a result of the integration of farmers into the market economy; and (3) farm households still have an appreciation of, and a preference for, the home-use related qualities of the landraces, this despite their long term disappearance and the subsequent availability of several improved wheat varieties. The study illustrates the relationship between the local availability of landrace wheats and their on-farm survival. The home uses of landraces plays an instrumental role in the promotion of on-farm (in situ) conservation. Augmenting conservation activities with non-breeding approaches (e.g., awareness-creation) would support the survival of wheat landraces for the foreseeable future. A study was undertaken to assess the amount of natural outbreeding in tetraploid wheat landraces of Ethiopian origin. The study consisted of two trials which were planted separately at two locations representing different environmental conditions for two consecutive seasons. The design employed was the randomized complete block with three replications. Two polymorphic loci, glume pubescence and awn condition were utilized as markers. The rate of outcrossing was based on the number of hybrids found in the recessive class of each marker. The overall level of outcrossing was higher in the pure stand trial than in the mixed stand trial. A higher rate of outcrossing occurred in the higher altitude area in the pure stand trial while the opposite was the case in the mixed stand trial. The average rate of outcrossing due to the marker loci was also different, with the long awn displaying more outbreeding tendency. Both locational and seasonal differences in the amount of outcrossing were observed. Generally, the study has revealed that there is a considerable amount of outbreeding in the landraces and that this genetic factor could play a role in preserving variation in the landrace populations. The level of outcrossing detected in this study could have a bearing on the maintenance of the genetic purity of diverse breeding lines being handled together in a breeding nursery and varietal purity in seed multiplication.  相似文献

Litter fall from upper storey trees in agroforestry systems contributes to nutrient cycling for the benefit of all components of the system besides serving as mulch. This study examined the seasonal changes in the quantity and quality of leaf litter fall from three sub-tropical fruit trees viz: avocado (Persea americana L.), mango (Mangifera indica L.) and litchi (Litchi chinensis L.) which have potential for use in agroforestry. Leaf litter production was estimated using nylon mesh litter traps erected over five randomly selected trees of each species in a completely randomised design. Litter quality was determined by analysing ash content and polyphenol, carbon, cellulose, lignin and nutrient concentrations over a 2?year period (2007?C2008). Total annual leaf litter production during the study period (dry matter basis) was 8.3, 6.3 and 5.6?t?ha?1?year?1 for litchi, mango and avocado, respectively. In both years, leaf litter fall was greatest during autumn and lowest during winter in all species. There were no significant differences in S, Ca, Mg and Mn concentrations in the leaf litter, but polyphenol, N, P and K concentrations differed significantly (P?<?0.05) between species. It was concluded that litter quality from all three tree species was low and would require appropriate management to improve its quality.  相似文献

The nitrogen status of most Zambian soils is inherently low. Nitrogen-fixing trees such as Faidherbia albida (F. albida) could have the potential to restore soil fertility. We conducted a study to examine the role of mature F. albida trees on the soil microbial communities and overall N fertility status in Zambia. Soil samples were collected under and outside the canopies of F. albida trees in representative fields from two sites namely; Chongwe (loamy sand) and Monze (sandy loam). To assess the long term canopy effects; total N, mineral N and soil organic carbon (Corg) content were directly measured from soils collected under and outside the canopy. Short term litter effects were assessed by subtracting concentrations of biochemical properties of non-amended controls from amended soils with F. albida litter during an 8 week incubation experiment. We also determined N mineralization rates, microbial community structure—Phospholipid fatty acids, microbial biomass carbon, and labile organic carbon (\({\text{C}}_{{{\text{org[K}}_{ 2} {\text{SO}}_{ 4} ]}}\)) during incubation. For the long term canopy effect, average N mineralization rate, Corg, total N and mineral N content of non-amended soils under the canopy were (all significant at p < 0.05) greater than soils outside the canopy on both sites. In the short term, amending soils with litter significantly increased N mineralization rates by an average of 0.52 mg N kg?1 soil day?1 on soil from Monze. Microbial biomass carbon measured after 4 weeks of incubation was on average significantly higher on amended soils by 193 and 334 mg C kg?1 soil compared with non-amended soils in Chongwe and Monze soils, respectively. After 6 weeks of incubation, the concentration of all selected biomarkers for major microbial groups concentrations in non-amended soils were significantly higher (all p < 0.05) under the canopy than outside in Monze soil. Using principal component analysis, we found that the segregation of the samples under and outside the canopy by the first principal component (PC1) could be attributed to a proportional increase in abundances of all microbial groups. Uniform loadings on PC1 indicated that no single microbial group dominated the microbial community. The second principal component separated samples based on incubation time and location. It was mainly loaded with G-positive bacteria, and partly with G-negative bacteria, indicating that microbial composition was dominated by these bacterial groups probably at the beginning of the incubation on Monze soils. Our results show that the improvement of soil fertility status by F. albida could be attributed to a combination of both long term modifications of the soil biological and chemical properties under the canopy as well as short term litter fall addition.  相似文献

The kinetics of the pectin methylesterase (PME)-catalyzed de-esterification of pectin was studied at 25 degrees C in the presence of sucrose, fructose, maltodextrin (DE = 16.5-19.5), and carboxymethylcellulose at different concentrations and in the presence of maltodextrin and sucrose at different concentrations in a temperature range between +25 and -4 degrees C in subcooled and frozen states. The objective was to determine whether the reaction is diffusion-controlled, to gain insight about the factors determining the diffusion of the reactants, and to determine the effect of the carbohydrates, low temperature, and freezing on the structural conformation of the enzyme. The results indicate that the PME-catalyzed de-esterification of pectin is diffusion-controlled. Nevertheless, the diffusion is not controlled by the macroviscosity of the reaction medium, but rather by the microviscosity experienced by the diffusants. Low temperature in the temperature range studied does not affect the structural conformation of the enzyme, while freezing seems to have some effect.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study of brucellosis in small ruminants was carried out from October 2008 to March 2009 in Jijiga District, Somali Regional State of Ethiopia. Seven hundred thirty sera samples (421 of sheep and 309 of goats) were randomly collected from purposively selected villages of the study area. Structured questionnaire format was developed, pre-tested and administered to assess the perception of the community pertaining to brucellosis in sheep and goats. Sera samples were screened by Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT), and all samples tested positive by the RBPT were subjected to Complement Fixation Test (CFT) for confirmation. Of 12 serum samples that were positive by RBPT, 11 were positive by CFT. Statistically significant differences were not observed between the species as well as the sex groups (P > 0.05); however, the variation between the age groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Analysis of the questionnaire survey suggests that improper handling of aborted materials, consumption of raw milk, and lack of awareness about the disease, among others, might greatly contribute to further spread of brucellosis in their livestock and exposes the community to a public health hazard. In general, the sero-prevalence in the study area was not so high; nevertheless, appropriate brucellosis control and prevention methods should be implemented to circumvent future potential for economic losses and the public health hazard of the disease.  相似文献

For forest ecosystem management to be effective, knowledge of the horizontal and vertical structural diversity of a forest is essential. The moist Afromontane highlands of Wondo Genet in south-central Ethiopia present an opportunity to restore and rehabilitate and enhance the ecosystem services to be obtained from this forest sustainably. We focused on the forest structural characteristics to better understand the current forest conditions to assist in the sustainable management of this resource. A total of 75 (20 m × 20 m) quadrats were sampled and diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 2 cm and stem height ≥ 2 m were measured. Species identity and abundance, elevation, slope, and aspect were recorded for each plot. Structural characteristics were computed for each plot. Relationship of topographic factors with vegetation characteristics was conducted using R-Software. A total of 72 woody species was recorded. Whereas, the overall diameter distribution shows an inverted J-shaped curve, the basal area followed a bell-shaped pattern. Five types of population structures are revealed. The mean tree density and basal area was 397.3 stems·ha?1 and 31.4 m2·ha?1, respectively. Only 2.8% of the tree species have densities of >25 stems·ha?1 and the percentage distribution of trees show 56.2% in the DBH class 2–10 cm, indicating that the forest is dominated by medium-sized trees. Celtis africana (8.81 m2·ha?1) and Pouteria adolfi-friedericii (5.13 m2·ha?1) make the highest contribution to the basal area and species importance value index. The families/species with the highest importance value index are Ulmaceae, Fabacea and Sapotaceae. Species abundance (r 2 =0.32, p <0.001) and species richness (r 2 =0.50, p <0.001) are positively related with tree density. Tree density is negatively related with elevation (r 2 =?0.36, p <0.001), slope (r 2 =?0.15, p <0.001) and aspect (r 2 =?0.07, p <0.05). While basal area is negatively related with elevation (r 2 =?0.14, p <0.001), it has a positive relationship with tree density (r 2 =0.28, p <0.001 and species richness (r 2 =0.098). Species with poor population structure should be assisted by restoration tasks and further anthropogenic disturbance such as illegal logging and fuel wood extraction should be restricted.  相似文献
