Complex spatial variation in soil can be analysed by wavelets into contributions at several scales or resolutions. The first applications were to data recorded at regular intervals in one dimension, i.e. on transects. The theory extends readily to two dimensions, but the application to small sets of gridded data such as one is likely to have from a soil survey requires special adaptation. This paper describes the extension of wavelet theory to two dimensions. The adaptation of the wavelet filters near the limits of a region that was successful in one dimension proved unsuitable in two dimensions. We therefore had to pad the data out symmetrically beyond the limits to minimize edge effects. With the above modifications and Daubechies's wavelet with two vanishing moments the analysis is applied to soil thickness, slope gradient, and direct solar beam radiation at the land surface recorded at 100‐m intervals on a 60 × 101 square grid in south‐west England. The analysis revealed contributions to the variance at several scales and for different directions and correlations between the variables that were not evident in maps of the original data. In particular, it showed how the thickness of the soil increasingly matches the geological structure with increasing dilation of the wavelet, this relationship being local to the strongly aligned outcrops. The analysis reveals a similar pattern in slope gradient, and a negative correlation with soil thickness, most clearly evident at the coarser scales. The solar beam radiation integrates slope gradient and azimuth, and the analysis emphasizes the relations with topography at the various spatial scales and reveals additional effects of aspect on soil thickness.  相似文献

The relationship between soil strength and crop yield may be summarized by a linear correlation coefficient (usually negative). It is likely, however, that this over-simplifies a complex situation in which the relationship between these variables depends on spatial scale and location. We used the wavelet transform to assess this scale- and location-dependence. We established a transect on an arable field in Eastern England, and studied the correlations of soil strength (top- and subsoil) with crop yield. The transect comprised 267 contiguous 0.72 m × 0.72 m plots. Measurements were taken during two consecutive growing seasons of winter wheat (harvest dates of August 2004 and 2005). Soil strength was measured with a penetrometer in the spring of each growing season. As expected, the overall correlation of soil strength with yield was negative but weak. Wavelet analysis revealed that, at fine spatial scales, topsoil and subsoil strength were correlated more or less equally with yield; however, at coarse spatial scales, topsoil strength had a stronger correlation with yield than did subsoil strength. The correlation of topsoil strength with yield at fine spatial scales (corresponding to about 1 m on the ground) was negative. A likely source of this fine-scale variation was the soil compaction associated with tractor wheelings. The correlation of topsoil strength with yield at the coarsest spatial scale (corresponding to about 50 m on the ground) was positive. This correlation was temporally stable, and might have reflected how soil strength can act as a proxy for other soil attributes. In the 2005 growing season, we found evidence that, at intermediate spatial scales, the correlation of soil strength with yield changed depending on the position on the transect. This was probably due to an interaction between the compaction associated with tractor wheelings and the local soil conditions. There was no evidence of such location-dependence in the correlation of soil strength with yield in the 2004 growing season. In summary, the effect of soil strength on crop yield was not expressed in a constant negative correlation across all spatial scales and locations: the negative correlation occurred mainly at fine spatial scales, and the correlation changed according to the position in the landscape and the prevailing local soil conditions.  相似文献

Females of the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, exploit sheep dung as a source of protein for egg development. Flies fed on dung collected from sheep 1 to 6 days after being drenched with the broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug ivermectin showed delayed reproductive development and reduced fecundity. Male and female survival was also reduced. Despite these effects, except where the recommended frequency of drenching (1 to 4 times per annum) is greatly exceeded, it is unlikely that ivermectin residues will affect any useful reduction in blowfly populations.  相似文献

Receiver functions derived from teleseismic body waves recorded by ocean-bottom seismometers on the southern East Pacific Rise reveal shear waves converted from compressional waves at the mantle discontinuities near 410- and 660-kilometer depth. The thickness of the mantle transition zone between the two discontinuities is normal relative to the global average and indicates that upwelling beneath the southern East Pacific Rise is not associated with an excess temperature in the mantle transition zone.  相似文献

In 2009–2010, an unusual lymphoproliferative disease was identified in multiple siblings from successive litters of Manx cats, suggesting a genetic predisposition to development of this disease. Presentation of disease in the cats had multiple similarities with the human disease ALPS, a rare inherited disorder that causes persistent lymphoproliferation, together with variable manifestations of autoimmunity and increased susceptibility to neoplasia. The majority of human ALPS patients have inherited Fas gene mutations, causing defective apoptosis of lymphocytes, although for a proportion of ALPS patients the underlying genetic mutations remain unknown. In order to identify the likely mode of inheritance of the disease, further matings of potential carrier cats are in progress. Studies to investigate the potential role of abnormalities in the Fas gene in the development of the disease in cats are also proposed. Identifying and further characterising the nature and mechanism of the disease in cats may allow better understanding of the development, progression, and treatment of ALPS in humans.  相似文献

Abstract

AIM: To determine whether there is a seasonal variation in the phenotypic hip score of dogs born in New Zealand as assessed by the New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) canine hip dysplasia (CHD) scheme.

METHODS: Data from dogs born in New Zealand between 1988 and 2009 that have been scored for CHD were retrospectively evaluated for the effect of month of birth on radiographic phenotype. Data included both the total score and the subtotal score, comprising Norberg's angle, the subluxation score and changes to the cranial acetabular edge, for each dog. Datasets were created for all breeds combined and for the four most populous breeds using the scheme (German Shepherd dog, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever and Rottweiler) and stratified according to month of birth and season. Due to the skewed nature of the data, a Kruskal–Wallis Rank Sum test was used to test for statistical significance. Additionally, χ2 analysis was performed using the median of each dataset (proportion above/below the median). The null hypothesis was that there would be no effect of month of birth, and hence seasonality, on hip phenotype for dogs born and scored in New Zealand by the NZVA.

RESULTS: For all breeds combined, month of birth had an effect on total and subtotal NZVA CHD scores (p<0.001) with a lower total hip score in the autumn months of March and April than other months. When individual large breed data were analysed, there was an effect of month of birth on total and subtotal scores for the Labrador Retriever and the Rottweiler (p≤0.05), but not the German Shepherd dog or Golden Retriever breeds.

CONCLUSIONS: Being born in the autumn was associated with a protective effect on hip phenotype in some breeds. These results suggest that weather and/or another seasonal factor may have a significant environmental effect on the phenotype of the coxofemoral joint.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The protective effect of being born in autumn suggests that a decreased level of exercise during subsequent development over winter may positively impact on final coxofemoral joint conformation. Whilst statistically significant, the magnitude of the sparing effect is not likely to be clinically relevant. However, this study, in concert with other studies, may suggest that the effects of exercise can be manipulated to improve hip phenotype.  相似文献

Lytic lesions with microscopic features similar to those of vaccine-site sarcomas were diagnosed in the distal femur of two young neutered male cats, one a 20-month-old Birman and the other an 18-month-old domestic short-hair (DSH). Radiographically, there was extensive destruction of trabecular and cortical bone in the metaphysis and/or epiphysis of the distal femur. The DSH cat also had angular deformity of the distal femur due to asymmetrical involvement of the physis. Histologically, the lesions in both cats consisted of dense, interwoven bundles of fibrous connective tissue, amongst which there were variable numbers of plump malignant mesenchymal cells, often with very large, hyperchromatic nuclei and irregularly shaped nucleoli. Several focal aggregates of small lymphocytes were present in both tumours. Although neither cat had apparently been vaccinated in the hindlimb it is possible that the tumours had been triggered by injection of some other irritant material.  相似文献

National-scale soil datasets exhibit variation over widely disparate spatial scales. Geological variation is an important source at the coarsest scale, and one in which exhaustive information is commonly available, in geological maps. Superimposed on this is continuous spatial variation caused by factors such as relief, vegetation and diffuse 'background' pollution. Further variation is caused by locally distinct factors such as point pollution from industrial sites or occasional geological anomalies. In this paper, we propose a single statistical model to encompass all of these effects which we describe as 'geological variation', 'continuous spatial variation' and 'local anomalies'. In our model, the geological and continuous spatial variation are described, respectively, by the fixed and random effects of a linear mixed model (LMM) and the local anomalies lead to observations which are spatial outliers with respect to the LMM. We fit the model to a survey of 1887 observations of cadmium concentration in soil (Cd) collected on an incomplete regular grid across the French metropolitan territory (550 000 km2) and use it to predict Cd across France. We find that (i) it is not possible to fit a valid model—in terms of cross-validation statistics—of Cd variation unless the effects of local anomalies are identified and separated from the larger-scale processes; (ii) the LMM is not valid if the outliers are merely discarded but a valid model does result if the outliers are winsorized. On the basis of these findings we suggest a practical robust algorithm for national-scale spatial analysis.  相似文献

Two methods for modelling a coregionalization were compared, the traditional parametric linear model of coregionalization (LMCR) and a non-parametric method based on a Fourier transform of the empirical (cross-) correlogram maps. The methods were compared in terms of how well they fit the experimental correlograms, and the prediction quality of their co-kriged estimates. Three datasets were compared, each representing different situations where we might use co-kriging.We found that both methods were somewhat restricted in how well they could represent the experimental correlograms because of the constraint that any coregionalization model must be positive-definite. There was little to distinguish between both methods in terms of how well the models fitted the raw correlogram data.The cokriged estimates from both methods were very similar in terms of their accuracy however the kriging variances from the LMCR were a better reflection of the prediction error. The non-parametric modelling is substantially faster than modelling the LMCR so if the only interest is in obtaining cokriged estimates then it should seriously be considered. In cases where the kriging variances are of interest then the LMCR should be used.  相似文献
