Persistent dorsal displacement of the soft palate (pDDSP) is a relatively rare equine disorder. This case series reports histories and clinical findings in 8 cases of pDDSP, and outcome after treatment of concurrent epiglottic entrapment (n = 3), laryngeal tie‐forward (n = 6) ± laser staphylectomy (n = 2), and/or sectioning of mucosa ventral to the epiglottis and the hyoepiglotticus muscles (n = 2). Four of 6 horses that underwent tie‐forward ± laser staphylectomy had complete resolution of pDDSP and returned to their previous level of work, as did one horse that had a subepiglottic releasing incision. Correction of concurrent epiglottic entrapment in 3 horses with pDDSP did not result in resolution of pDDSP in any case. Previous laryngeal surgery including laryngoplasty and ventriculocordectomy appear to be risk factors for the development of pDDSP.  相似文献

A detailed short-term (12 d) laboratory study was carried out to investigate the effects of applying animal urine, fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) and fertilizer+urine on emission of NO and N2O from soil. A complementary 24 d field study measured the effect of fertilizer or fertilizer+sheep grazing on NO and N2O emissions from pasture. The data generated were used to interpret the transformations responsible for the release of these gases. Application of urine to the soil (at a rate equivalent to 930 kg N ha−1) increased the amount of mineral and microbial N in the soil. This was followed by increases in emissions of NO (from 0.02 to 1.76 mg NO-N m−2 d−1) and N2O (from 15 to 330 mg N2O-N m−2 d−1). Molar ratios of NO-N-to-N2O-N were very low (<0.001 to 0.011) indicating that denitrification was the main process during the first 12 d after application. In the laboratory, nitrification was inhibited during the first 7 d due to an inhibitory effect of the urine, but even though nitrification was clearly underway 7–12 d after application, denitrification was still the dominant process. The fertilizer was applied at a lower rate (120 kg N ha−1) than the urine. Consequently, the effect on soil mineral N was smaller. Nevertheless the fertilizer still increased NO and N2O emission with denitrification the dominant process. The effects of fertilizer and grazing on NO and N2O emissions was less obvious in the field compared with the laboratory and fluxes returned to background rates within 4 d. This was attributed to the rapid decline in soil mineral N in the field trial due to plant uptake and leaching, processes that did not occur in the laboratory.  相似文献

The migration and evolution of a deep ocean hydrothermal event plume were tracked with a neutrally buoyant RAFOS float. The float remained entrained in the plume for 60 days, and the plume vorticity was calculated directly from the anticyclonic motion of the float. Concentrations of suspended particles, particulate iron, and dissolved manganese in the plume did not decay significantly during the 60 days, which indicates that event plumes would be easily detectable a year after formation.  相似文献

A review of 400 horses referred because of dental disorders showed 44 cases to suffer from primary disorders of their incisors and 11 from canine or 1st premolar teeth disorders. The remaining 345 horses suffered from primary disorders of the cheek teeth. Disorders of incisors included traumatic damage to teeth and their supporting bones, retained deciduous, displaced and supernumerary incisors; brachygnathia and abnormalities of wear, with most of the latter disorders being secondary to primary disorders of the cheek teeth Only 3 cases of apical infection of incisors were recognised. Most cases of fractured incisors responded well to conservative therapy. Retained deciduous incisors were extracted, but most cases with supernumerary and displaced incisors, or brachygnathia were treated conservatively. Most disorders of the canine and 1st premolar were developmental displacements that caused bitting problems (abnormalities of head movement associated with the bit), and these cases responded well to extraction of the displaced teeth.  相似文献

The kinetics of the cell mediated immune response by ducks acutely and chronically infected with, or immune to infection by duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) was determined. This was measured by an antigen specific blastogenesis assay to duck hepatitis B surface antigen (DHBsAg) and duck hepatitis B core antigen (DHBcAg) using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The three outcomes of acute infection by DHBV were either clearance from both serum and liver, clearance from serum but not liver, or the development of persistent viraemia. Acutely infected ducks that failed to clear the infection also failed to develop a significant cellular immune response to both antigens. Ducks with chronic infection acquired as neonates or as the result of the failure to clear acute infection had an increasing cellular immune response over time. Two groups of immune ducks were examined. These were either ducks that had become immune following infection or that had been vaccinated. Both groups of ducks demonstrated significant cellular responses following challenge with DHBV irrespective of the level of their responses before challenge. However, there was a reduction in the response of their PBMC over a 4-week-period postchallenge. The range of cellular immune responses to DHBV antigens observed in this study has a number of counterparts in hepatitis B infection of humans. Coupled with the defined clinical outcomes that can be established in the duck/DHBV model, further study of the cellular immune response to DHBV is warranted.  相似文献

The new powdery mildew fungicide quinoxyfen belongs to the novel quinoline class of chemistry. Although its biochemical mode of action is unknown, quinoxyfen does not act in the same way as other cereal fungicides. It is a systemic protectant which inhibits the early stages of mildew infection on a wide range of crops, and provides season-long protection from a single early-season spray applied around GS 31. The base-line sensitivity profile of quinoxyfen was defined for barley powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f.sp. hordei) from over 340 field isolates collected from different parts of the UK from 1991 onwards. Sensitivities ranged from <0·0001→0·16 mg litre-1 with a mean of 0·003 mg litre-1. Current work is extending the base-line sensitivity studies to wheat powdery mildew (E. graminis f.sp. tritici), and includes isolates from European trials, but so far this new data set has shown no differences from barley powdery mildew. Quinoxyfen-resistant mutants were generated in the laboratory, and some similar resistant strains were obtained from treated field crops. These laboratory and field strains were always defective, in some way, for sporulation and, curiously, all required the presence of quinoxyfen for survival in culture. Attempts to generate resistant mutants that sporulated normally were unsuccessful. These studies suggested that the resistance risk for quinoxyfen is low. The recommended anti-resistance strategy accompanying introduction of quinoxyfen avoids seed treatments and late-season applications. Instead, a single early (GS 31) treatment using either pre-formulated mixtures or alternating with a fungicide with different mode of action is recommended. Wetlands are critical resources in the highlands of southwest Ethiopia, where they perform numerous environmental functions and provide a range of benefits for local communities. In recent years, however, an increase in the drainage and cultivation of these areas and reports of wetland degradation have raised concerns over the sustainability of wetland agriculture. This paper presents the results of a study in which groundwater levels were monitored in a series of wetlands undergoing different stages of drainage and cultivation, to establish the hydrological changes taking place as a consequence. The results suggest that drainage and cultivation induce extreme spatial and temporal variations in the wetland watertable. This is linked in part to structural and chemical changes in the wetland soil which affect hydraulic conductivity. Statistical analysis of this variability revealed the existence of wetland subunits, exhibiting specific hydrological behaviour, which may reflect the influence of current and past land use. Although degradation of these wetlands does occur, many wetland users are aware of their impacts and have developed practices which, in most cases, prevent overdrainage to the extent that the wetlands cannot support agriculture. In this respect, it is argued that wetland use remains hydrologically sustainable, although this ultimately rests upon the ability of communities to continue to develop and apply their indigenous wetland management practices under rapidly changing environmental, socio‐economic and political conditions.
