Benign cranial mediastinal lesions in three cats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Cranial mediastinal lesions were detected in three cats, associated with respiratory impairment (case one), spontaneous pneumothorax (case two) and myasthenia gravis (case three), respectively. On gross and histological examination, the first case was considered either a lymphangioma or a branchial cystic mass of the thymic region of the mediastinum; a cystic lesion was suggested by sonographic detection of multiple anechoic cavitations within a circumscribed mass, while fine needle aspiration cytology excluded lymphosarcoma. The second case was diagnosed histologically as a cystic thymoma, but the third case was not examined microscopically. The masses were amenable to surgical excision in the first two cats, while this proved unnecessary in the third case because of resolution following treatment with dexamethasone. Corticosteroid responsiveness was unhelpful in distinguishing between these benign lesions and lymphosarcoma, as in two cases there was a partial or complete response to dosing with prednisolone or dexamethasone. These cases are presented to emphasise that conditions other than lymphosarcoma can produce cranial mediastinal lesions in cats, and that the prognosis for surgical treatment of lymphangiomas, multilocular thymic cysts and cystic thymomas can be excellent.  相似文献

Cimaterol-induced muscle hypertrophy and altered endocrine status in lambs   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The objectives of this study were 1) to determine how cellular growth of skeletal muscle is altered by the repartitioning agent cimaterol and 2) to determine if cimaterol alters endocrine status in association with its repartitioning effects. Thirty Dorset wether lambs were randomly assigned to a pre-treatment baseline group or received 0 or 10 ppm cimaterol in a complete, mixed, high-concentrate diet for 7 or 12 wk. Weights of biceps femoris (BF), semimembranosus (SM) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles were 32.8, 27.1 and 31.5% greater, respectively, in treated lambs at 7 wk, and were 22 to 24% greater at 12 wk. Longissimus (LD) cross-sectional area was 26 and 32% greater at these treatment intervals. Percent type I fibers declined significantly over the course of the experiment in ST, SM and LD, and cimaterol caused a small but significant reduction in percent type I fibers in the ST at 7 and 12 wk. Muscles from lambs fed cimaterol contained 50 and 75% more fibers that exhibited negative staining for phosphorylase activity. Mean cross-sectional area of type I and type II fibers in the combined portions of the ST were 30.4 and 29.3% greater, respectively, in cimaterol-fed lambs after 12 wk, while type I and type II fiber areas in the longissimus were only 13 and 15% greater, respectively. Cimaterol-induced hypertrophy of the ST resulted in both protein and RNA content being 30 to 35% greater (P less than .01) at 7 and 12 wk, while DNA concentration was 22% less (P less than .01) at 7 wk. DNA concentration returned to normal by 12 wk. These results indicate that cimaterol elicits a rapid increase in muscle RNA and protein accretion without concurrent incorporation of satellite cell nuclei. Plasma insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations were 55 and 34% lower, respectively, in cimaterol-fed lambs. Plasma somatotropin concentration and area under the curve were 2.3 times greater (P less than .01) in lambs fed cimaterol for 6 wk, while plasma cortisol, prolactin and glucose concentration were unaffected at 6 or 12 wk. The significant changes in endocrine status may be important in the mechanism(s) of cimaterol in altering muscle accretion.  相似文献

SUMMARY Postprandial insulin and glucose concentrations were measured in 3 Arabian and 3 Thoroughbred foals at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months of age. Prefeeding serum Insulin concentrations were similar in foals at 1 day (25.9 ± 5.1 pmol/L), 1 week (32.4 ± 5.8 pmol/L), and 1 month (38.2 + 7.9 pmol/L), but had Increased significantly to 131.0 ± 20.2 pmol/L at 3 months of age (P < 0.05). There was significantly increased serum Insulin secretion after a feed In foals at 3 months of age (P < 0.05) when compared with that at younger ages. Prefeeding serum glucose concentrations ranged from 6.0 ± 0.7 mmol/L at 1 day, to 5.9 ± 0.9 mmol/L at 1 week, 4.9 ± 1.7 mmol/L at 1 month, and 4.4 ± 1.5 mmol/L at 3 months of age. There were lower postprandial glucose concentrations with advancing age. It appeared that there was a period of maturation in pancreatic β-cell function after birth in foals, which reached adult levels by 3 months of age.  相似文献

Appreciable natural thermoluminescence with glow curve peaks at about 350 degrees centigrade for lunar fines and breccias and above 400 degrees centigrade for crystalline rocks has been recognized in lunar samples. Plagioclase has been identified as the principal carrier of thermoluminescence, and the diference in peak temperatures indicates compositional or structural differences between the feldspars of the different rock types. The present thermoluminescence in the lunar samples is probably the result of a dynamic equilibrium between acquisition from radiation and loss in the lunar thermal environment. A progressive change in the glow curves of core samples with depth below the surface suggests the use of thermoluminescence disequilibrium to detect surfaces buried by recent surface activity, and it also indicates that the lunar diurnal temperature variation penetrates to at least 10.5 centimeters.  相似文献

Ultrasonographic characteristics of soft tissue tumours in dogs   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Objective   To identify and describe the ultrasonographic features of soft tissue tumours in dogs.
Procedure   Superficial soft tissue tumours of various histological types, including mast cell tumours (MCTs) and soft tissue sarcomas (STSs), were evaluated. Ultrasound was used to visualise internal characteristics of the tumour, including vascularity. Tumours were categorised according to size, shape, margin definition, tissue plane mobility, echogenicity, echotexture, acoustic shadowing or enhancement and vessel distribution. Objective measurements of intratumoural blood flow included velocities and maximal perfused cross-sectional area (fractional area). Logistic regression models incorporating a variety of data were used in an attempt to predict the histopathological type of tumours.
Results   The logistic regression model defined by the parameters echotexture, margin definition and presence of subcapsular vessels was highly predictive of MCTs (> 73%; P = 0.024). Several other trends, including a larger size for STSs and less vascularity for both MCTs and STSs, were observed, but did not reach statistical significance.
Conclusion   This preliminary study has shown the potential diagnostic value of ultrasound in differentiating soft tissue tumours. However, at present, ultrasound cannot replace biopsy and histopathological evaluation for tumour diagnosis.  相似文献

Pre‐natal glucocorticoids are used in women at risk of preterm delivery to induce foetal lung maturation. However, glucocorticoids can produce negative outcomes for other tissues such as the reproductive system. We therefore tested the effects of pre‐natal betamethasone on testicular morphology and apoptotic protein immune expression during pre‐ and post‐natal development. Pregnant ewes (n = 42) bearing singleton male foetuses were randomly allocated to receive intramuscular injections of saline or betamethasone (0. 5 mg/kg) at 104, 111 and 118 days of gestation (DG). Testes were collected at 121 and 132 DG, and at 45 and 90 post‐natal days (PD) and subjected to morphometric analysis (volume densities of sex cords and interstitial tissues; sex cord diameter). Immunohistochemistry (% stained area) was used to assess active caspase‐3, Bax, Bcl‐2 and cell‐cycle proteins (PCNA). Compared with control values, betamethasone treatment decreased sex cord diameter at 121 DG, 45 and 90 PD, and sex cord volume at 90 PD. Active caspase‐3 was decreased by betamethasone at 121 DG and 90 PD, but Bax was increased in all betamethasone groups. Bcl‐2 and PCNA decreased in the betamethasone groups at 121 DG and 45 PD, but increased at 132 DG and 90 PD. We conclude that high levels of pre‐natally administered glucocorticoid reduce foetal testicular development, perhaps via changes in the balance between pro‐ and anti‐apoptotic proteins and cell‐cycle proteins. These outcomes could compromise the future spermatogenic potential of male offspring.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to explore aspects of the statistical analysis of gene expression response at the muscle tissue level to varying levels of energy and protein in the diet. Eleven Brahman and Brahman composite steers (weighing 302 +/- 9.8 kg, on average) were allocated randomly into high- (HIGH), medium- (MED), and low- (LOW) quality forage diets for 27 d. After this period, a biopsy of the longissimus dorsi muscle was taken from each animal and total RNA was extracted to generate the labeled target for microarray experimentation. These targets were hybridized to a complementary DNA (cDNA) microarray of 9,274 probes from cattle muscle and subcutaneous fat cDNA libraries. After edits, 151,904 expression intensity levels of 4,747 genes were analyzed. Emphasis was given to the choice of power transformation of the intensity channel readings and to the consistency of readings within each diet quality group. The statistical approach to isolate differentially expressed genes was based on model-based clustering via a mixture of normal distributions estimated through maximal likelihood. The base-2 logarithm was found to be the optimal power transformation to normalize gene intensity levels. A two-sample t-statistic was defined as a measure of possible differential expression. For each of the three diet contrasts, HIGH vs. LOW, HIGH vs. MED, and MED vs. LOW, three clusters were found, two of which contained more than 94% genes with almost no altered gene expression levels, whereas the third cluster contained the remaining genes with a differential expression. Results from the HIGH vs. LOW contrast identified 27 genes with a greater than 95% posterior probability of belonging to the cluster of differentially expressed genes.  相似文献
