Linkage mapping of the mouse nephrosis (nep) gene to chromosome 15.

ICGN is a partially inbred strain of mice with nephrotic syndrome caused by spontaneous glomerular lesion. It has been reported that the albuminuria in ICGN mouse was controlled by at least a single autosomal recessive gene (nep). In this study, we mapped the nep locus by linkage analysis of backcross progeny between ICGN and MSM mice using DNA pooling method. The linkage analysis revealed that the nep locus was localized on the distal part of chromosome 15.     

Relationship between mitogen receptors in peripheral blood lymphocytes and blastogenic responses to mitogen

The relationship between the optimum concentration of mitogen which induces lymphocyte blastogenic response and the receptor occupancy by mitogen was investigated. The receptor occupancies which induced maximal blastogenic activity in equine, bovine and canine peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) were 31.1 per cent, 26.5 per cent and 38.4 per cent with phytohaemagglutinin-P, and 48.2 per cent, 17.9 per cent and 24.5 per cent with concanavalin A, respectively. The data clearly show that each animal species had its own optimum concentration of mitogen for stimulation of PBL. Optimum concentration for blastogenesis and number of binding sites of each mitogen had a good correlation with each other for all three species.     

Oxygen isotopic compositions of asteroidal materials returned from Itokawa by the Hayabusa mission

Meteorite studies suggest that each solar system object has a unique oxygen isotopic composition. Chondrites, the most primitive of meteorites, have been believed to be derived from asteroids, but oxygen isotopic compositions of asteroids themselves have not been established. We measured, using secondary ion mass spectrometry, oxygen isotopic compositions of rock particles from asteroid 25143 Itokawa returned by the Hayabusa spacecraft. Compositions of the particles are depleted in (16)O relative to terrestrial materials and indicate that Itokawa, an S-type asteroid, is one of the sources of the LL or L group of equilibrated ordinary chondrites. This is a direct oxygen-isotope link between chondrites and their parent asteroid.     

Decrease in catalase activity of cultured cells by Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection

The effect of Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection on the host cell catalase activity was histochemically examined in cultured chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEF) and kidney cells. The activity in normal cells was detected as fine, brown granules in the cytoplasm, which appeared ultrastructurally to correspond to anucleoid microbodies. By infecting cultured cells with a CEF-passaged strain of M. gallisepticum, the catalase-positive granules clearly decreased in amount, whereas the UV light-killed mycoplasma and the original strain failed to decrease the granules. The cell-passaged strain was able to induce cytopathic effects and this appeared to be due to its enhanced adherent ability as compared with the original strain. These findings suggest that attachment of viable organisms to cells is crucial to decrease the catalase activity and that the decreased activity may be an important process for the subsequent development of cytopathic effects.     

The inhibitory effects of colchicine, vinblastine and cytochalasin D on lymphocyte blastogenic responses

The inhibitory effects of colchicine, vinblastine and cytochalasin D on blastogenic responses of equine, bovine and canine peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) were investigated. These drugs inhibited blastogenic responses of each PBL. The concentrations for 50% recovery in PBL blastogenic response of colchicine and vinblastine were lower in equine and canine PBL than in bovine PBL. This suggested that microtubules may be more concerned in blastogenic response of equine and canine PBL than of bovine PBL. On the other hand, the concentration for 50% recovery in PBL blastogenic response of cytochalasin D was almost the same in the PBL of each animal. This meant that microfilaments made only a small contribution to the lymphocyte blastogenic response.
