Arabinoxylans occur in a wide variety of agricultural products and may contribute a significant portion of human dietary fiber intake. Corn hulls and banana peels are potential sources of arabinoxylans with isolation yields of ≈40 and 10% when extracted with dilute alkali. A broiler chick growth study was performed to determine the effect of extracted corn hull arabinoxylan on performance and attachment of Salmonella, as a representative of an enteric pathogen, to the ileum. Ability of arabinoxylans to activate a macrophage cell line as an immune stimulator was determined by respiratory burst assay. Corn hull arabinoxylan tended to increase body weight gain and reduced attachment of Salmonella to ileal tissue in broiler chicks undergoing mild heat stress. Arabinoxylans from corn hulls and banana peels showed positive oxidative burst in macrophage cells. Collectively, these data indicate the two arabinoxylans have the potential to be used as health‐promoting dietary supplements.  相似文献

Analysis of spawning biomass per‐recruit has been widely adopted in fisheries management. Fishing mortality expressed as spawning potential ratio (SPR) often requires a reference point as an appropriate proxy for the fishing mortality that supports a maximum sustainable yield—FMSY. To date, a single generic level between F30% and F40% is routinely used. Using records from stock assessments in the RAM Legacy Database (RAMLD), we confirm that SPR at MSY (SPRMSY) is a declining function of stock productivity quantified by FMSY. We then use general linear models (GLM) and Bayesian errors‐in‐variables models (BEIVM) to show that SPRMSY can be predicted from life‐history parameters (LHPs, including maximum lifespan, age‐ and length‐at‐maturation, growth parameters, natural mortality, and taxonomic Class) as well as gear selectivity. The calculated SPRMSY ranges from about 13% to 95% with a mean of 47%. About 64% of the stocks in the RAMLD require SPRMSY > 40%. Modelling SPRMSY reveals that LHPs plus Class explain 61% of the deviance in SPRMSY. Faster‐growing, low‐survival, and short‐lived species generally require a high SPR. With equal LHPs, elasmobranchs require about 20% higher SPRMSY than teleosts. When FMSY is estimated from fisheries that harvest older fish, increasing the vulnerable age by one year leads to about an 8% increase in SPRMSY. The BEIVM yields smaller variance and bias than the GLM. The models developed in this study could be used to predict SPRMSY reference points for new stocks using the same LHPs for calculating Fx%, but without knowledge of the stock‐recruitment parameters.  相似文献

The effectiveness of recreational fisheries governance has been mixed, with some countries boasting good governance practices that sustain productive recreational fisheries, while others lack any policies and governance structures specific to recreational fisheries. Here, we identify what constitutes effective governance of recreational fisheries by carrying out: (a) a desktop review of 227 country‐specific fisheries legislation, policies and strategies; and (b) a follow‐up questionnaire‐based survey covering 57 contacts in 29 selected countries. Our results show that while recreational fishing is referred to in the main legislation of 67% of the countries reviewed, only 86 of these 152 countries provide a definition for either “recreational” or “sport” fishing and not always in the main legislation. Recreational fisheries are not considered to be effectively managed in many countries, with less than a quarter of respondents claiming that management in their country is effective. Furthermore, the management efficacy, including compliance with regulations, was considered greater for the industrial and small‐scale fishing sectors than for recreational fisheries in most countries. From our findings, it appears that effective recreational fisheries governance requires explicit acknowledgement of recreational fisheries with a clear legal definition in Policy, a well‐developed Policy statement, extensive co‐management processes, clearly defined biological, economic and social monitoring structures and efficient and transparent cost recovery mechanisms. To ensure adaptation to rapidly changing conditions, policy should recognize all fishery sectors and proactively incorporate adaptive planning and contingency plans to effectively secure the diverse values of resources for all users.  相似文献

The route and rate of degradation of florasulam, a low‐rate triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilide herbicide, was investigated in six soil types under aerobic conditions at 20 or 25 °C. Degradation products were isolated and identified by mass spectroscopy. Florasulam was rapidly degraded by microbial action with an average half‐life of 2.4 days (range 0.7 to 4.5 days). The first step in the degradation pathway involved conversion of the methoxy group on the triazolopyrimidine ring to a hydroxy group to form N‐(2,6‐difluorophenyl)‐8‐fluoro‐5‐hydroxy[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5‐c]pyrimidine‐2‐sulfonamide. This metabolite degraded, with a half‐life of 10 to 61 days, via partial breakdown of the triazolopyrimidine ring to form N‐(2,6‐difluorophenyl)‐5‐aminosulfonyl‐1H‐1,2,4‐triazole‐3‐carboxylic acid. This was followed by cleavage of the sulfonamide bridge to form 5‐(aminosulfonyl)‐1H‐1,2,4‐triazole‐3‐carboxylic acid. Other degradation processes involved decarboxylation of the carboxylic acid metabolites and mineralisation to form carbon dioxide and non‐extractable residues. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Arabinofuranosyl groups are present in many hemicelluloses as single or multiple units attached to the main xylan or galactan chain where they are sensitive to acid hydrolysis. The diversity of predatory species plays a key role in ecosystem functioning but our understanding of the mechanisms underlying their coexistence is limited, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. Northern pike Esox lucius, European perch Perca fluviatilis and pikeperch Sander lucioperca are three widespread predatory species in European lakes, where they often coexist. As potential competitors, we hypothesised that partitioning habitat is a determinant of species coexistence. This was tested by quantifying the variability of their habitat use in tracking adult individuals in the Bariousses reservoir (France, 86.6 ha, mean depth 7.1 m). Specifically, we investigated their distribution along the littoral–pelagic and depth axes along the daily cycle and across seasons. From littoral to pelagic waters were first found pike, then perch and finally pikeperch. Pike was the closest to the surface while pikeperch was the deepest. This general pattern was, however, variable across seasons with the three species located in the upper layer in summer during reservoir stratification. Individuals were more evenly distributed along the littoral–pelagic axis and closer to the bottom when water was mixing (autumn, winter). In summer, perch used more intensively in the pelagic zone during the daytime. Other species did not show any diel change of habitats. Our results highlighted that species coexistence is associated with habitat partitioning among these three predators, with perch showing a more variable behaviour regarding habitat characteristics. Now more than ever, in the context of global change which modifies habitats, it is of crucial importance to understand the coexistence mechanisms of species that shape ecosystems.  相似文献
