Glutamic acid supplementation recovers the reduced performance of weanling pigs fed reduced crude protein diets

This study was conducted to evaluate the supplementation of glutamic acid(Glu)to reduced protein diets on the performance of weanling pigs.One hundred and eighty crossbred weanling pigs([Yorkshire
Landrace]
Duroc,21 d old)having similar body weight(BW)of 6.45 kg were randomly allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments(5 pigs per pen[2 barrows and 3 gilts];6 pens per treatment)based on BW and sex during a 6-week trial.Dietary treatments consisted of positive control(PC)diet formulated to have 226.9,205.6,and 188.8 g crude protein(CP)during phases 1,2,and 3,respectively,and negative control(NC)diets with 20 g CP reduction from PC diets and addition of Glu with increasing levels,resulting in the calculated Lys-to-Glu ratios of 1:2.25,1:2.30.1:2.35,1:2.40,and 1:2.45,designated as NC,NC1,NC2,NC3,and NC4,respectively.The BW of pigs receiving PC diet was higher(P<0.05)than those receiving NC diet at d 7,21 and 42.A higher(P<0.05)average daily gain(ADG)from d 1 to 7,8 to 21,22 to 42 and during the overall experiment period was observed in pigs fed PC than NC diet.Pigs fed NC diets including the graded level of Glu linearly increased(P<0.05)BW at d 42,ADG and gain-to-feed ratio(G:F)during the overall experimental period.In addition,trends in linear increase in BW(P=0.056)at d 7 and ADG from d 1 to 7 and d 22 to 42(linear effect,P=0.081,P=0.058 respectively)were observed.A tendency in the linear increment of NH3(P=0.082)at d 21 and linear reduction in methyl mercaptans(P=0.054)emission at d 42 was observed in pigs fed NC diets supplemented with graded level of Glu.In conclusion,supplementing the reduced protein diet with Glu enhanced the growth performance in weanling pigs suggesting that supplementation of Glu can compensate the reduction of 2%CP in the basal diets.     

Pathophysiology of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli during a host infection

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a major cause of infantile diarrhea in developing countries. However, sporadic outbreaks caused by this microorganism in developed countries are frequently reported recently. As an important zoonotic pathogen, EPEC is being monitored annually in several countries. Hallmark of EPEC infection is formation of attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions on the small intestine. To establish A/E lesions during a gastrointestinal tract (GIT) infeciton, EPEC must thrive in diverse GIT environments. A variety of stress responses by EPEC have been reported. These responses play significant roles in helping E. coli pass through GIT environments and establishing E. coli infection. Stringent response is one of those responses. It is mediated by guanosine tetraphosphate. Interestingly, previous studies have demonstrated that stringent response is a universal virulence regulatory mechanism present in many bacterial pathogens including EPEC. However, biological signficance of a bacterial stringent response in both EPEC and its interaction with the host during a GIT infection is unclear. It needs to be elucidated to broaden our insight to EPEC pathogenesis. In this review, diverse responses, including stringent response, of EPEC during a GIT infection are discussed to provide a new insight into EPEC pathophysiology in the GIT.     

The electron-pairing mechanism of iron-based superconductors

The past three years have witnessed the discovery of a series of novel high-temperature superconductors. Trailing behind the cuprates, these iron-based compounds are the second-highest-temperature superconducting material family known to date. Despite the marked differences in the chemical composition, these materials share many properties with the cuprates and offer the hope of finally unveiling the secret of high-temperature superconductivity. The main theme of this review is the electron-pairing mechanism responsible for their superconductivity. We discuss the progress in this young field and point out the open issues.     

Interactions of insecticides with biological membranes

Many insecticides (e.g. DDT, lindane, pyrethroids) are hydrophobic molecules which bind extensively to biological membranes. Binding of insecticides to phospholipid bilayers frequently shows saturation, with binding increasing with increasing insecticide concentration up to some limit, beyond which no further insecticide is incorporated into the bilayer. For lindane, this limit has been shown to correspond to the concentration at which the aqueous phase becomes saturated. Simple alkanes show similar saturation phenomena, and binding of halogenated alkanes can be followed by fluorescence quenching methods. It is shown that effects of hydrophobic molecules on bilayer fluidity are small. Effects of alkanes and insecticides on the activity of the (Ca²⁺-Mg²⁺)-ATPase purified from sarcoplasmic reticulum follow from direct binding to the ATPase, at sites which are not at the lipid-protein interface of the ATPase.     

Identification and analysis of the Georgia 98 serotype, a new serotype of infectious bronchitis virus

Twenty-five field infectious bronchitis viruses (IBVs) similar to, but genetically distinct from, the DE072 serotype were isolated from several states in the United States from 1990 through 1999 and were examined molecularly and antigenically. A 421-bp sequence in the hypervariable region of the S1 gene was examined, and phylogenetic analysis on that region indicated that these viruses are closely related but fall into unique groups. Cross-virus neutralization testing and entire S1 sequence analysis on selected isolates further confirmed that fact, and we divided the viruses into the DE072 serotype and two other unique groups. In a vaccine protection trial, the commercially available DE072 vaccine showed less than 50% protection against viruses in one of the groups. The majority of the recent isolates belong to that group and share very low antigenic relatedness to the DE072 strain as well as other serotypes of IBV. Consequently, we designated this group as a new serotype, Georgia 98. We developed a restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis that can differentiate this new serotype from all other serotypes of IBV.     

Effect of dopamine on excretory urographic image quality and the prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy in dogs

The effect of low dose dopamine on the excretory urographic image quality and contrast media-induced nephropathy in normal dogs (experiment 1) and the dogs with decreased renal function (experiment 2) were assessed. In experiment 2, decreased renal function was induced by gentamicin overdose. In each experiment, animals were divided into 3 groups. In group 1, only contrast medium (iohexol) was administered. In group 2, contrast medium plus intravenous fluid (0.9% saline) were administered. And in group 3, contrast medium plus intravenous fluid and low dose dopamine were administered. Investigated parameters included intrarenal resistive index (RI), serum BUN and creatinine concentrations, contrast medium elimination time and radiographic image quality. In experiment 1, RI of group I increased at 80 min after contrast medium administration (p<0.05), but RI of group 3 decreased at 48 and 72 hr (p<0.05). Serum BUN concentration of group 1 was higher than that of group 2 and 3 (p<0.05); in radiographic examination, contrast medium elimination time decreased in group 2 and 3, but image quality of group 2 was inferior to that of group 3. In experiment 2, image quality of group 3 only provided adequate visualization of renal structures. The formula of contrast medium plus low dose dopamine was found to provide good nephrogram and pyelogram image quality without supplemental contrast medium, and to protect renal tubules from prolonged exposure to concentrated contrast medium.
