Crop-derived feed protein production is alarmingly low in Europe. Finland represents the northernmost growing region in the world and consequently lacks wide-ranging alternatives to improve crop-based protein production. Spring rapeseed, both turnip rape (Brassica rapa L.) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), are adapted to such northern conditions. This study examines the potential for genotype and environment induced trade-off between oil and protein in rapeseed in order to enhance further the status of rapeseed as a protein crop for northern areas. Datasets on advanced breeding progenies (including cultivars) were provided by Boreal Plant Breeding Ltd., while environment-induced variability in combinations of protein and oil content was studied by using long-term, multi-location datasets of MTT Official Variety Trials. Oilseed rape has more potential as a protein producer than turnip rape, with some 100 kg/ha difference in protein yields. Selecting lines superior in seed protein content at the expense of oil was not a potential means to consolidate protein production capacity per hectare: seed and protein yields were higher the better the capacity of the line to store oil. This can only mean that obviously the lower energy demand for oil synthesis was not alternatively used to boost protein production, but actually vice versa. In the case of environment-induced variation, the highest protein yields were produced in experiments where relatively high protein content was associated with modest oil content, but such conditions were characterised as inefficient in general production capacity and thereby, excessive in applied nitrogen fertiliser. Hence, we were not able to identify promising opportunities for prompt and energy-efficient trade-off between protein and oil in rapeseed.  相似文献

It is often claimed that agroforestry could increase the total productivity per land unit compared to monocropping systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in a sub-humid Mediterranean climate, the behavior of the yield components, phenology, LAI and NDVI of durum wheat in an alley-cropping system. Our hypothesis was that the microclimate changes in agroforestry could change the devlelopment and yield of cereals. Two different experiments were carried out: in 2015 under 16-year old poplars in East–West lines and in 2016 under 21-year-old ash trees in North–South lines. In each experiment, 12 genotypes of durum wheat were sown. The grain yield was not significantly different in agroforestry and full sun conditions in 2015; however, both systems in this experiment had a particularly low yield (≈ 10% of the historical average yield of the plot). In 2016, the grain yield was significantly lower in agroforestry in comparison with full sun conditions. In both experiments, the most impacted yield component by agroforestry was the number of grains per spike. Similarly, in both experiments, the number of grains per spike was the only yield component impacted by the position within the alley inside agroforestry. Surprisingly, in 2016 the grain yield was higher in the West than in the center position of the alley. In both experiments, agroforestry delayed the maturity of the crop. The use of standard growing degree days was not sufficient to explain the difference in phenology between agroforestry and full sun conditions.  相似文献

This study examined effects of surface modification with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on adhesive bond performance in birch veneer bonded with phenol–formaldehyde resin. The veneer was treated with 5% of H2O2 at 80 °C in the presence of alkali with the objective of improving adhesive bond performance and reducing the resin demand. The effects of the surface modification were determined by surface color measured with a spectrophotometer, bond performance tests with ABES (automated bonding evaluation system) and surface hydrophobicity with sessile contact angle measurements. Results demonstrated that veneer surface became significantly whiter, which also increased in lightness and decreased in redness and yellowness. ABES test revealed that a remarkable increase in bond performance in the treated veneer and the maximum bond strength with the treatment at 60 min, which was nearly twice as high as reference sample (5.42 → 9.94 N/mm2), was obtained. A notable decrease in contact angle measurements was also observed in the treated veneers (0° in 0.5 s). The surface modification of birch veneer with H2O2 + alkali demonstrated greater potential for the improvement of physical characteristics in veneer surface. Other aspects of H2O2 consumption during the treatment are also discussed.  相似文献

The profitability of growing a naturally emerged birch (Betula pendula Roth or Betula pubescens Ehrh.) overstory in a young Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) plantation was examined with empirical stand structure, growth and yield, logging cost, and logging damage models. In the projected alternatives, an overstory of either birch species was thinned to 200–1000 stems per ha at the age of 15 years and retained for another 15 years. Development of the remaining spruce stand was simulated up to rotation age (70–85 years). Alternative treatments included removing the overstory completely at 15 years, and managing a pure spruce stand that was kept free of birch throughout.

Growing a birch overstory of 200–1000 stems per ha up to age 30 years resulted in a 61–93 m3 ha−1 or 9.1–16.8% yield loss for the spruce stand due to growth retardation, and a mortality of 382–498 out of 1900 stems per ha through logging damage. This was compensated for or exceeded by the additional yield of the birch (54–173 m3 ha−1) except for the lowest stocking (200–400 stems per ha) alternatives with B. pubescens. Treatment regimes with a birch overstory were clearly the most profitable alternatives, yielding up to 151% (B. pendula) and 113% (B. pubescens) of the net present value of the pure spruce alternative, at 4% interest rate. Removing the birch overstory already at 15 years was the least profitable alternative with 79 and 83% net present values, respectively. The most profitable treatment with current technology, price, and cost structure appears to be to grow 500–800 birch per ha up to about age 40 years for B. pendula and 45–50 years for B. pubescens.  相似文献

The effect of two training systems (Central Leader with branch pruning versus Centrifugal Training with minimal pruning, i.e., removal of fruiting laterals only) on canopy structure and light interception was analyzed in three architecturally contrasting apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) cultivars: 'Scarletspur Delicious' (Type II); 'Golden Delicious' (Type III); and 'Granny Smith' (Type IV). Trees were 3D-digitized at the shoot scale at the 2004 and 2005 harvests. Shoots were separated according to length (short versus long) and type (fruiting versus vegetative). Leaf area density (LAD) and its relative variance (xi), total leaf area (TLA) and crown volume (V) varied consistently with cultivar. 'Scarletspur Delicious' had higher LAD and xi and lower TLA and V compared with the other cultivars with more open canopies. At the whole-tree scale, training had no effect on structure and light interception parameters (silhouette to total area ratio, STAR; projected leaf area, PLA). At the shoot scale, Centrifugal Training increased STAR values compared with Central Leader. In both training systems, vegetative shoots had higher STAR values than fruiting shoots. However, vegetative and fruiting shoots had similar TLA and PLA in Centrifugal Trained trees, whereas vegetative shoots had higher TLA and PLA than fruiting shoots in Central Leader trees. This unbalanced distribution of leaf area and light interception between shoot types in Central Leader trees partly resulted from the high proportion of long vegetative shoots that developed from latent buds. These shoots developed in the interior shaded zone of the canopy and therefore had low STAR and PLA. In conclusion, training may greatly affect the development and spatial positioning of shoots, which in turn significantly affects light interception by fruiting shoots.  相似文献

Both the spatial distribution of leaves and leaf functions affect the light interception, transpiration and photosynthetic capacities of trees, but their relative contributions have rarely been investigated. We assessed these contributions at the branch and tree scales in two apple cultivars (Malus x domestica Borkh. 'Fuji' and 'Braeburn') with contrasting architectures, by estimating their branch and tree capacities and comparing them with outputs from a radiation absorption, transpiration and photosynthesis (RATP) functional-structural plant model (FSPM). The structures of three 8-year-old trees of each cultivar were digitized to obtain 3-D representations of foliage geometry. Within-tree foliage distribution was compared with shoot demography, number of leaves per shoot and mean individual leaf area. We estimated branch and tree light interception from silhouette to total leaf area ratios (STAR), transpiration from sap flux measurements and net photosynthetic rates by the branch bag method. Based on a set of parameters we previously established for both cultivars, the outputs of the RATP model were tested against STAR values, sap fluxes and photosynthetic measurements. The RATP model was then used to virtually switch foliage distribution or leaf functions (stomatal and photosynthetic properties), or both, between cultivars and to evaluate the effects on branch and tree light interception, transpiration and photosynthetic capacities in each cultivar. 'Fuji' trees had a higher proportion of leaf area borne on long shoots, fewer leaves per unit shoot length and a larger individual leaf area than 'Braeburn' trees. This resulted in a lower leaf area density and, consequently, a higher STAR in 'Fuji' than in 'Braeburn' at both branch and tree scales. Transpiration and photosynthetic rates were significantly higher in 'Fuji' than in 'Braeburn'. Branch heterogeneity was greater in 'Braeburn' than in 'Fuji'. An analysis of the virtual switches of foliage distribution or leaf function showed that differences in leaf spatial distribution and functions had additive effects that accounted for the lower transpiration and photosynthetic rates of branches and trees of 'Braeburn' compared with 'Fuji'. Leaf distribution had a more important role at the branch scale than at the tree scale, but the leaf function effect exceeded the leaf distribution effect at both scales. Our study demonstrated the potential of FSPM to disentangle physiological differences between cultivars through in silico scenarios.  相似文献

Wheat presents an important genetic diversity that could be useful to look for cultivars with reduced allergencity. omega5-Gliadins have been described as major allergens for wheat allergic patients suffering from wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) and some cases of chronic urticaria (U). Our objective was to study the influence of genetic variability at the Gli-B1 locus encoding for omega5-gliadins on the reactivity of IgE antibodies from these patients. We selected cultivars expressing 13 alleles at Gli-B1 including a wheat/rye translocation and studied the reactivity to gliadins of a rabbit antiserum specific for omega5-gliadins and of IgE from 10 patients. The antiserum and IgE from nine patients with WDEIA and U strongly detected omega5-gliadins expressed by most of the Gli-B1 alleles but showed no or faint responses to the gliadins and secalins extracted from the translocated wheat. The selection of genotypes lacking the Gli-B1 locus may reduce wheat allergenicity.  相似文献
