Summary The trace element status of crossbred Friesian × zebu (Boran) and local zebu cattle in the Selale highlands of Ethiopia was evaluated during the rainy and dry seasons of 1989 and 1990 in terms of the trace element content of soils, feeds, blood plasma and faeces on 25 randomly selected farms. Liver samples from animals of local breeds from a slaughter house were collected during the rainy and dry seasons of 1990 and analysed.Soil Fe and Mn were found to be high. Iron contents of all feeds were extremely high and Mn contents were higher than the dietary requirement. A large proportion of feed samples were deficient in Cu and zinc. There were wide variations in the concentrations of these elements among the soil and feed samples.Blood plasma Fe (P<0·001) and Cu (P<0·01) values differed significantly between the years. Plasma samples collected during 1990 contained lower mean Cu than 1989. The effect of season was statistically significant (P<0·001) for all the trace elements. More than half of the animals were found to have low plasma Cu and Zn during the rainy season. Due to lack of any correlations between soil, pasture and blood plasma it is suggested that analyses of soils and pasture are not reliable for assessing the Fe, Cu and Zn status of grazing cattle in the highlands. Analyses of liver and blood appear to provide better indices.
Un Estudio Del Estado Mineral Del Suelo, Alimentos Y Ganado En Las Tierras Altas Selale De Etiopia: Microelementos
Resumen Se evaluó el contenido de microelementos en suelos, alimentos, plasma sanguíneo y heces en 25 fincas escogidas al azar. El ganado utilizado como unidades experimentales fueron cruces de Friesian × Cebú (Boran) y ganado Cebú local, en las tierras altas de Selale en Etiopía; la evaluacion tuvo lugar durante las estaciones lluviosas y secas de 1989 y 1990. Se analizaron también muestras de hígado tomadas de ganado en el matadero durante la estación lluviosa y seca de 1990.El Fe y Mn se encontraron altos en los suelos. El contenido de hierro de todos los suelos fue extremadamente alto, como también el contenido de Mn. Sin embargo, una gran proporción de alimentos fue pobre en Cu y Zinc. Estos elementos variaron ampliamente en el suelo y muestras de alimentos.Los valores de Fe plasmático (P<0·001) y de Cu (P<0·01) difirieron ampliamente entre años. Las muestras plasmáticas colectadas durante 1990 contuvieron menos Cu que en 1989. El efecto de la estación fue significativa estadísticamente (P<0·001) para todos los elementos traza.Más de la mitad de los animales se encontraron con niveles de Cu y Zn plasmáticos bajos durante la estación lluviosa. Debido a la carencia de correlación entre suelo, pasturas y plasma sanguíneo, se sugiere que el análisis de pasto y suelo no son confiables para estudiar valores de Fe, Cu y Zn en ganado en pastoreo en las tierras altas de Etiopía. Aparentemente el análisis de hígado y sangre provee mejores índices.

Enquête Sur La Teneur En Éléments Minéraux Des Sols, Des Aliments Du Bétail Et Des Bovins Dans Les Hautes Terres De Selale Éthiopien. II. Oligo-Éléments
Résumé Les teneurs en oligo éléments des croisements Frison x Boran et zébu locaux dans les Hautes Terres du Selale éthiopien ont été estimées durant les saisons sèches et humides des années 1989 et 1990 en termes de contenu spécifique des sols, des aliments du bétail, du plasma sanguin et des fèces sur 25 fermes sélectionnées au hasard. Des prélèvements de foie sur des animaux de race locale ont été effectués à l'abattoir pendant les saisons sèches et humides de 1990 en vue de leur analyse. Des taux éléves ont été trouvés pour le fer et le magnésium du sol. Les teneurs en fer de tous les aliments étaient extrêmement élevées et celles en magnésium étaient plus élevées que les besoins alimentaires. Une forte proportion des échantillons d'aliments étaient carencés en cuivre et en zinc. Les variations des concentrations de ces élements dans les prélèvements de sols et d'aliments se situaient dans une large échelle. Les valeurs du fer plasmatique sanguin et celles du cuivre différaient de façon significative selon les années (P<0,001 etP<0,01 respectivement). Les prélèvements de plasma collectés en 1990 contenaient en moyenne moins de Cu qu'en 1989. L'effet de la saison etait statistiquement significatif pour (P<0,001 pour tous les oligo éléments. Pour plus de la moitié des animaux, les teneurs plasmatiques en Cu et Zn étaient peu élevées pendant la saison des pluies. En raison du manque total de corrélations entre le sol, le pâturage et le plasma sanguin, il est à penser que les analyses des sols et des pâturages ne sont pas fiables pour la détermination des teneurs en fer, cuivre et zinc du bétail au pâturage dans les Hautes Terres. Les analyses du foie et du sang apportent des indications plus satisfaisantes.

Recent studies have extended the rapidly developing retroviral restriction factor field to cells of carnivore species. Carnivoran genomes, and the domestic cat genome in particular, are revealing intriguing properties vis-à-vis the primate and feline lentiviruses, not only with respect to their repertoires of virus-blocking restriction factors but also replication-enabling dependency factors. Therapeutic application of restriction factors is envisioned for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease and the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) model has promise for testing important hypotheses at the basic and translational level. Feline cell-tropic HIV-1 clones have also been generated by a strategy of restriction factor evasion. We review progress in this area in the context of what is known about retroviral restriction factors such as TRIM5α, TRIMCyp, APOBEC3 proteins and BST-2/Tetherin.  相似文献

Bacterial spot of cucurbits, caused by Xanthomonas cucurbitae, is an emerging disease of cucurbits. This study was conducted to identify Cucurbita species that are resistant to X. cucurbitae. We developed a reliable method for inoculating cucurbit plants by spraying plants with X. cucurbitae suspensions containing carborundum. Symptoms of the disease developed within 7 days after inoculation. Subsequently, we evaluated the virulence of six isolates of X. cucurbitae in the greenhouse and observed that X. cucurbitae isolated from cucurbit fields in Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin were more virulent than the reference ATCC 23378 strain. Then, we screened 81 commercial cultivars of gourds, pumpkins, and squashes, as well as 300 Cucurbita spp. accessions, for their resistance to X. cucurbitae under greenhouse and field conditions. In the greenhouse study, all commercial cultivars and some of the accessions developed typical symptoms of bacterial spot disease, while some of the accessions developed fewer lesions. In the field studies, infection of leaves and fruits was caused by both natural inoculum and spray-inoculation of plants with a suspension of the X. cucurbitae isolate from Illinois. Among 300 accessions tested, 9 and 21 accessions were classified as resistant and less resistant, respectively. Resistant and less resistant accessions belong to the species Cucurbita maxima, C. maxima subsp. maxima, C. maxima subsp. andreana, and C. okeechobeensis subsp. martinezii. This is the first report of potential resistance to bacterial spot of cucurbits.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of increasing amounts of cereal-based concentrate on milk production. The study consisted of a series of three separate experiments in which cows were grazed in intensive rotation on timothy-meadow fescue pasture. In Experiment 1, 28 multiparous Holstein–Friesian cows received 0, 3, 6 and 9 kg concentrate in a cross-over designed trial with a fixed daily herbage allowance of 21 kg DM/cow. The energy-corrected milk yield increased linearly 0.84 kg/kg DM (P < 0.001), up to the 9 kg concentrate level. The milk fat (P < 0.001) and urea (P < 0.001) content decreased linearly (0.41 g/kg DM and 0.15 mmol/kg DM, respectively). The milk protein content tended (P = 0.08) to increase 0.10 g/kg DM with increasing supplementation.

In Experiment 2, 17 primiparous cows and 28 multiparous cows were used in a randomized-block designed trial with 3, 6 and 9 kg concentrate supplementation and a fixed 25 kg DM herbage allowance. The energy corrected milk yield increased linearly (P < 0.01) 0.67 kg/kg DM, whereas the milk urea content decreased linearly (P < 0.001) 0.27 mmol/kg DM. The milk protein content increased and the fat content decreased, but these differences were not significant.

In Experiment 3, a cross-over design was used to assess the response to concentrate supplementation of 24 multiparous cows (treatments: 6, 9 and 12 kg; fixed herbage allowance 25 kg DM) and 12 primiparous cows (treatments: 4, 7 and 10 kg; herbage allowance > 25 kg DM). The energy-corrected milk yield of the multiparous cows varied quadratically (Pquad < 0.001; 30.0, 32.5 and 32.2 kg for 6, 9 and 12 kg supplementation, respectively). Supplementation linearly decreased the urea (P < 0.001) 0.13 mmol/kg DM and fat (P < 0.001) 0.46 g/kg DM contents. The milk fat content also varied quadratically, showing the lowest content with the 12 kg level (Pquad < 0.05; 37.3, 37.3 and 34.9 g/kg for 6, 9 and 12 kg supplementation, respectively). The energy-corrected milk yield of the primiparous cows increased linearly (P < 0.001) 0.54 kg/kg DM up to 10 kg supplementation, whereas the milk urea (P < 0.001) and fat contents decreased linearly (P < 0.01) by 0.19 mmol/kg DM and 0.61 g/kg DM, respectively.

The results showed that the milk response remained linear up to the 9 kg supplementation level, but the highest level of supplementation resulted in only a marginal increase in milk yield. There was no interaction between season and milk or milk protein yield, which indicates that it is possible to maintain stable grazing conditions during the main grazing season in Nordic latitudes. The results support to some extent the hypothesis that the marginal milk response to supplementation increases with increasing milk production.  相似文献

Effects of light intensities on growth, survival, reproductive and life span traits of Artemia urmiana were investigated under laboratory conditions. Nauplii of A. urmiana were hatched and raised in 100 g L?1 at four illuminations including 0, 100, 2000 and 5000 lx with 14:10 (light:dark) photoperiod. Mating pairs of mature animals were randomly isolated and reared continuously under similar conditions. The mode and potential of reproduction as well as adult survival shown by each pair were determined throughout their life span. Results showed that percentages of nauplii survival were significantly ( 0.05) different at 5000 and 0 lx (76.50% compared with 26.25%) respectively. Total number of offspring was highly correlated with the light intensities showing increased numbers at higher light intensities compared with darkness or 100 lx. Reproduction mode was relatively affected by various light intensities. Significant ( 0.05) differences were found both in reproductive period and life span at different illuminations. Maximum and minimum offspring productions per reproductive day were found at 5000 and 100 lx respectively. The relative degree of oviparity increased as the illumination decreased (57.92% compared with 22.65% at 0 and 5000 lx respectively). The optimum light intensities appear to be between 2000 lx and 5000 lx in this study. These findings could probably be useful for mass culture of A. urmiana in indoor or recirculating systems as well as in outdoor systems for intensive cyst and biomass production.  相似文献

A xylanase inhibitor of the xylanase-inhibiting protein (XIP) type was detected in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) whole meal using Western blot and immunoprobing with polyclonal anti-XIP antibodies. No detectable levels of Triticum aestivum xylanase inhibitor (TAXI) and thaumatin-like xylanase inhibitor (TLXI) type xylanase inhibitors were present. Trichoderma longibrachiatum xylanase affinity chromatography (AC) was used for the purification of sorghum XIP. Biochemical characteristics and protein sequence data show that sorghum XIP strongly corresponds to wheat (T. aestivum L.) XIP-I. Like wheat XIP-I, it inhibits both glycoside hydrolase family (GH) 10 and 11 xylanases, indicating that the XIP-I active site residues are well conserved in sorghum XIP. However, in contrast to wheat XIP-I, the inhibitor is unable to affect Aspergillus niger GH 11 xylanase activity. Its specific inhibition activities towards the other xylanases tested are comparable to those of wheat XIP-I. Based on the available sorghum expressed sequence tag (EST) database, XIP is expressed in sorghum in different tissues and developmental stages. Also expression in the presence of several plant hormones and under biotic as well as abiotic stress conditions is suggested.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of date palm extracts [DPE] (Phoenix dactylifera L. Arecaceae) on growth, immune function and antioxidant system in common carp fingerlings (Cyprinus carpio). One hundred and twenty fish (4.06 ± 0.13 g) were divided into six groups fed on control diet or diets containing 200 mL kg?1 DPE for 8 weeks. At the end of feeding trial, the expression of different genes was measured. Selected genes were grouped into three categories: growth factor genes in brain and liver [growth hormone (GH), insulin‐like growth factors I and II (IGF‐I and IGF‐II), antioxidant‐related genes in liver [glutathione S‐transferase‐alpha (GST‐α), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase genes (GPX)] and immune‐related genes in head kidney [interleukin‐8 (IL‐8), interleukin‐10 (IL‐10) and transforming growth factor‐beta (TGF‐β) genes]. The relative expression of the growth‐related genes in fish fed DPE showed no significant increase compared to control group (> 0.05). On the other hand, DPE altered the expression of genes encoding antioxidants enzymes in liver of fingerlings which was statistically significant with respect to the control samples in case GPX (< 0.05). Also, DPE caused remarkable increases in the expression of the immune‐related genes (IL‐8, IL‐10 and TGF‐β) analysed on head kidney of common carp fingerlings compared to the control group (< 0.05). In conclusion, it can be suggested that administration of DPE in early stages of common carp culture can promote immune efficacy and increase the antioxidant activity.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of a commercial prebiotic, Immunogen, on feed utilization, growth rate, immunity promotion and carcass composition of the common carp Cyprinus carpio fingerlings. The fingerlings were adopted for 2 weeks and then reared in triplicate groups in 250-l tanks (n = 15 per tank with average initial weights of 11.12 ± 0.55 g). The fish fed on five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic experimental diets containing different levels of Immunogen (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2.5 g prebiotic/kg diet) to apparent satiation thrice a day for 8 weeks. Weight gain showed no differences among the groups fed different Immunogen levels. Both feed efficiency ratio and protein efficiency ratio significantly (p < 0.05) increased with increasing Immunogen levels from 0.5 to 1.5 g/kg diet. The highest protein content (p < 0.05) was found in the fish fed a diet containing 2.5 g/kg prebiotic. Haematological parameters and plasma total protein concentration were also significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the fingerlings fed diets containing 1.5 and 2.5 g/kg prebiotic in relation to the control. The control fish contained the highest mean of total bacterial counts. The lowest mean (p < 0.05) of total bacterial counts was observed in the fish fed the diet containing 2.5 g/kg Immunogen. The present study reveals that a dietary Immunogen supplementation from 1 to 1.5 g/kg is capable to improve the feed efficiency and growth performance of C. carpio fingerlings as well as their resistance to A. hydrophila infection.  相似文献
