New cultivars ‘Alpine Russet’, ‘Dakota Trailblazer’ and ‘Ivory Crisp’ have lower tuber reducing sugars and acrylamide-forming potential. Adoption of new cultivars by growers requires information about their responses to agronomic factors such as nitrogen (N) fertilizer. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of N rate on yield and quality of new cultivars relative to conventional cultivars ‘Russet Burbank’ and ‘Snowden’. The experiment was conducted over two years as a randomized complete block design replicated four times with five N rates and five cultivars. The new cultivars had comparable or higher marketable yields, and a higher percentage of large tubers (greater than170 g) than the standard cultivars. Total and marketable yields responded quadratically to N and optimized at 231 kg ha?1 in 2011 and 319 kg ha?1 in 2012 for all cultivars. ‘Dakota Trailblazer’ had high hollow heart incidence (greater than 10% at N rates above 125 kg ha?1), and excessively high specific gravity, making it undesirable for processing but with potential to be a parent in a breeding program. ‘Alpine Russet’ and ‘Ivory Crisp’ had specific gravity suitable for commercial processing, and low hollow heart incidence at all N rates. Critical petiole nitrate-N concentrations 50 and 70 days after planting for all cultivars were greater in 2012 than in 2011, suggesting that interpretation of critical values can be affected by growing conditions.  相似文献

With the five-volume work Flora Europaea nearing completion, it has become possible to prepare a reasonably accurate list of threatened vascular plants for the whole European continent. This paper gives an account of this international conservation project, and considers the use of such data in formulating policies of nature conservation on a national, continental and world scale. Hybridisation with introduced taxa poses a threat to native fish populations. Mechanisms of reproductive isolation can limit or prevent hybridisation between closely related species. Understanding how these mechanisms interact between the same species across geographically distinct occurrences of secondary contact, and how regional factors influence them, can inform our understanding of hybridisation as a threat and management actions to mitigate this threat. We used data collected on adult fish migration timing and approximate emergence timing of subsequent juvenile fish paired with genomic data to assess whether temporal isolation in the timing of spawning exists between Yellowstone cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and hybrids in the North Fork Shoshone River drainage in northwest Wyoming. We found evidence that Yellowstone cutthroat trout spawn, on average, two to four weeks later than rainbow trout and hybrids and two environmental covariates related to water temperature and discharge were associated with differences in spawning migration timing. Despite statistical support for Yellowstone cutthroat trout spawning later, disproportionately high numbers of rainbow trout and hybrids, paired with extended spawning seasons, lead to substantial overlap between all genotypes. Our results provide further evidence of temporal segregation in the timing of spawning as a mechanism of reproductive isolation between closely related species, but substantial spawning overlap suggests temporal segregation alone will not be enough to curtail hybridisation in conservation populations.  相似文献

A transgenic corn (amylase corn) has been developed that produces an endogenous α‐amylase that is activated in the presence of water and elevated temperature (>70°C). Wet‐ and dry‐milling characteristics of amylase corn were evaluated using laboratory wet‐ and dry‐milling procedures. Different amounts of amylase corn (0.1–10%) were added to dent corn (with the same genetic background as the amylase corn) as treatments. Samples were evaluated for wet‐ and dry‐milling fraction yields using 1‐kg laboratory procedures. Milling yields for all amylase corn treatments were compared with the control treatment (0% amylase corn or 100% dent corn). No significant differences were observed in wet‐ and dry‐milling yields between the control and the 0.1, 1, and 10% amylase corn treatments. Most of the amylase activity (77%) in wet‐milling fractions was detected in the protein fraction. In dry‐milling, amylase activity (68.8%) was detected in endosperm fractions (fines, small grits, and large grits).  相似文献

Forty grain samples, derived from six soft red winter wheat lines with 1BL/1RS and four genotypes without the translocation, grown in four diverse environments, were used to assess test weight, flour yield, protein content of grain and flour, rheological properties, and end-use characteristics in cakes and cookies. Wheat lines with 1BL/1RS had similar or higher mean test weights than lines without the translocation. Mean flour yields were similar for the two groups. Test weight was not predictive of flour yield. Mean values for grain moisture, grain protein, and rheological properties, as measured by farinograph for mixing time stability and mixing tolerance index, were similar for wheat lines with and without 1BL/1RS. In several cases, flour from lines with 1BL/1RS produced dough with greater mixing tolerance and cakes with higher volume and softer texture than did check lines without the translocation. However, the translocation in these soft red winter wheat lines resulted in higher farinograph water absorption by the flour and decreased cookie spread. The results of this study were novel in that end-use, specifically baking quality of soft wheat lines with 1BL/1RS, varied dramatically depending on whether cookies or cakes were evaluated. Therefore, use of single-product baking tests may lead to false conclusions regarding end-use quality of 1BL/1RS soft wheat. Direct comparison between a pair of sister lines with and without 1BL/1RS indicated that the translocation had adverse effects on quality as exemplified by lower flour yield, greater farinograph water absorption, and reduced cookie diameter. However, the 1BL/1RS line had greater mixing tolerance and similar cake volume and texture scores in comparison to its sister line. In summary, 1BL/1RS lines were identified in which quality characteristics exceeded those of control cultivars and commercial flours. Genetic background and environmental factors probably affected milling and baking quality to a greater extent than the translocation. Many of the negative quality attributes previously associated with 1BL/1RS are probably due to genetic background effects and, therefore, could be greatly diminished with improvement of the genetic background in which the translocation resides.  相似文献
