Classical nova explosions are very energetic and frequent phenomena caused by explosive hydrogen burning on top of an accreting white dwarf. Observations of the recent nova V2487 Oph 1998 by the X-ray Multi-Mirror satellite (XMM-Newton) provide evidence that accretion (probably on a magnetic white dwarf) was reestablished as early as 2.7 years after the explosion. In addition, positional correlation with a source previously discovered by the R?ntgen Satellite (ROSAT) in 1990 suggests that the site of a nova explosion had been seen in x-rays before the outburst. 相似文献

The calcium hypothesis of synaptic transmission has been challenged by experimental results using the crayfish neuromuscular junction that suggest that presynaptic depolarization can trigger transmitter release directly without calcium influx. Results from electrophysiological experiments using the same preparation do not support this voltage hypothesis, but are consistent with the calcium hypothesis. Circadian and other natural clock-like endogenous rhythms may have evolved to anticipate regular temporal changes in the environment. We report that a mutation in the circadian clock gene timeless in Drosophila melanogaster has arisen and spread by natural selection relatively recently in Europe. We found that, when introduced into different genetic backgrounds, natural and artificial alleles of the timeless gene affect the incidence of diapause in response to changes in light and temperature. The natural mutant allele alters an important life history trait that may enhance the fly's adaptation to seasonal conditions. 相似文献

While the global use of in vitro-produced embryos in dairy cattle is on the rise, several technical aspects of embryo transfer procedures have not yet been optimized. This study compares the effects of inducing ovulation using human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) versus gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) at the end of a 5-day progesterone(P4)-based protocol for oestrous synchronization on the pregnancy rate of lactating dairy cow recipients of in vitro-produced embryos. Fresh embryos were transferred on Day-seven post-oestrus to ovulating cows receiving GnRH or hCG (groups GnRH and hCG, n = 60 each). Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasound on Day 28 post-oestrus. Forty-nine cows became pregnant: 16 in GnRH (26.7%) and 33 in hCG (55%). Taking GnRH-treated cows as reference, the odds ratio for pregnancy of hCG-treated cows was 3.3 (p = .002). In conclusion, hCG treatment given at the end of a 5-day P4-based protocol for oestrous synchronization improved the pregnancy rate in lactating dairy cows receiving an in vitro-produced embryo. 相似文献

The protective effects of grape seed procyanidin extract on the repair of H(2)O(2)-induced DNA lesions were tested using Fao cells. Cells were exposed to 600 microM H(2)O(2) for 3 or 21 h. A procyanidin extract from grape seed (PE) was incubated or preincubated (1 h) during the exposure to H(2)O(2). The ability of procyanidins to protect against the genotoxicity of H(2)O(2) was compared with those of the monomeric flavanols (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin and the flavonol quercetin. After treatment, DNA damage was monitored using alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (the comet assay) (Aherne, S. A.; O'Brien, N. M. Nutr. Cancer 1999, 34, 160-166). At the end of the experiment, PE significantly decreased the damage caused by H(2)O(2). The results also showed that quercetin was the most effective of the flavonoids tested, which is consistent with its powerful antioxidant character. The results indicate that procyanidins are more effective than the corresponding individual monomers, catechin and epicatechin, at preventing DNA lesions in hepatocytes and that this protection is higher after preincubation than after co-incubation. 相似文献

The evaluation of long-term heavy metal concentrations in the Gulf of Palermo (Italy) has been carried out in order to investigate how changes of pollution levels in the last 50 years can be reflected in marine sediments. Antioxidant phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables of a vegetarian diet may account for the reduced risk of aging and stress oxidative associated diseases. In this study, a simple, rapid and accurate new bioassay for the determination of the antioxidant activity of purified or crude plant extracts and thier interactions is described, based on the fluorimetric determination of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) released by UV-B radiated red blood cell (RBC) ghosts. Pure resveratrol, white and red wine and pomegranate juice (PJ) were used as antioxidant source to test the biological method. TBARS production is a function of radiation time, the number of RBC ghosts in the radiated sample and the loaded antioxidant. The antioxidant activity of resveratrol was detected at a submicromolar concentration range [0.02 μg/mL–0.1 μmol/L]. The activity of red wine was almost 10 times higher than that of white wine, and PJ juice had the highest activity. Submaximal protective effects of PJ and red wine were additive. 相似文献

Fresh Mediterranean hake (Merluccius merluccius var. mediterraneus), a species mainly caught off the shores of Spain, was stored at usual temperatures: in ice (commercial chain) and under refrigeration (home). Sensory and chemical analyses were performed throughout the storage time to determine the changes that took place and evaluate the effect of the storage temperature. Storage in ice resulted in a slight accumulation of volatile and biogenic amines in hake. When it was stored at 6-8 degrees C, a significant production of both trimethylamine and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) was observed, and biogenic amines were formed. Sensory analysis revealed that hake stored in ice was inedible after 29 days, the figure for refrigerated hake being 20 days. There was a nonsignificant correlation (p > 0.05) between TVB-N values and sensory score in hake stored at 0 degrees C. In all other cases, a significant correlation (p < 0.001) between volatile parameters and sensory analysis was found. 相似文献

Albendazole sulphoxide (ABZSO) is an anthelmintic drug used in veterinary practice. Its molecule has a chiral centre in the sulphur atom and racemic formulations are always used. The kinetics of the ABZSO enantiomers in the last third of pregnancy in ewes, and the placental transfer to the fetus, were studied after a single-dose oral administration (7.5 mg/kg) of a racemic formulation. In mothers, the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and C(max) values of (+)-ABZSO (42.4+/-10.5 microg/mL and 1.9+/-0.4 microg/mL, respectively) were higher than those of (-)-ABZSO (15.3+/-5.1 microg/mL and 1.0+/-0.3 microg/mL). The MRT values were 17.0+/-1.6 h for (+)-ABZSO and 13.1+/-1.8 h for (-)-ABZSO. Similar kinetic parameters were obtained in the fetus for both enantiomers, but the fetal concentrations were lower compared with values for the dam. The AUC ratio between (-)-ABZSO/(+)-ABZSO in the dam was 0.36 and in the fetuses 0.64, indicating a higher impairment for the (+)-enantiomer in its placental transfer to the fetus. 相似文献
