Oxisols cover ≈ 23% of the land surface in the tropics and are utilized extensively for agricultural purposes in the tropical countries. Under the variable input types of agricultural systems practiced locally, some of these soils still appear to have problems in terms of proper soil classification and subsequently hinder attempts to implement sustainable agro‐management protocols. The definition for Oxisols in Soil Survey Staff (1999) indicates that additional input is still required to refine the definition in order to resolve some of the outstanding classification problems. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the properties of some Oxisols and closely related soils in order to evaluate the classification of these soils. Soils from Brazil, several countries in Africa, and Malaysia were used in this study. Field observations provided the first indication that some of the presently classified kandi‐Alfisols and kandi‐Ultisols were closer to Oxisols in terms of their properties. Water‐retention differences and apparent CEC of the subsurface horizons also supported this idea. The types of extractable Fe oxides and external specific surface areas of the clay fractions showed that many kandic horizons have surface properties that are similar to the oxic horizons. Micromorphology indicated that the genetic transition from the argillic to the oxic involves a diminishing expression of the argillic. Properties, such as CEC, become dominant. The kandic horizon is therefore inferred as a transition to the oxic horizon. It is proposed that the Oxisols be keyed out based only on the presence of an oxic horizon and an iso–soil temperature regime. The presence of a kandic horizon will be reflected at lower levels in Oxisols. The Oxisols will now be exclusive to the intertropical belt with an iso–soil temperature regime. The geographic extend of the Oxisols would increase and that of kandi‐Alfisols and Ultisols would decrease. A few kandi‐Alfisols and Ultisols in the intertropical area will have low CEC which would fail the weatherable mineral contents. The kandic subgroups of some Alfisols and Ultisols will be transitional between the low (< 16 cmolc [kg clay]–1)‐ and high (> 24 cmolc [kg clay]–1)‐activity clay soils. The proposed changes to classification will contribute to a better differentiation of the landscape units in the field. Testing of the proposed classification on some Malaysian soils showed that the new definition for Oxisols provides a better basis for the classification of the local soils and the development of meaningful soil‐management groups for plantations.  相似文献

The looming water crisis and water-intensive nature of rice cultivation are driving the search for alternative management methods to increase water productivity in rice cultivation. Experiments were conducted under on-station and on-farm conditions to compare rice production using modified methods of irrigation, planting, weeding and nutrient management with conventional methods of cultivation. Farm surveys were used to evaluate adoption of modified rice cultivation method. On-station experiments showed that, a combination of water-saving irrigation, young seedling or direct seeding, mechanical weeding and green manure application increased the rice water productivity though the largest yields were obtained for a combination of conventional irrigation, young seedling or direct seeding, mechanical weeding and green manure application. On-farm experiments demonstrated a yield advantage of 1.5 t ha−1 for the modified method over conventional method. We found, however, that yield advantages were not the sole factor driving adoption. Associated changes required in management, including the increased labour demand for modified planting, unwillingness of agricultural labourers to change practices, difficulties with modified nursery preparation and the need to replace cheaper women’s labour for hand weeding with more costly men’s labour for mechanical weeding, all reduced the chance of adopting the modified rice cultivation method. Risks associated with water-saving irrigation, such as uncertainty about the timing and amount of water release for irrigation affect adoption adversely as well. There was no incentive for farmers to adopt water-saving irrigation as water from reservoirs and electricity for pumping well-water are both free of charge. To date farmers continue to experiment with the modified cultivation method on a small part of their farms, but are unlikely to adopt the modified method on a large-scale unless policies governing water management are changed.  相似文献

The Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) group of islands is immensely rich in plant biodiversity. Andaman’s native tribes are hunter-gatherers, sustaining on wild or marine food and practically do not have any cultivation. Diversity in cultivated crops is presently maintained in home gardens by settlers from the mainland and other adjoining countries. The National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) through explorations either alone or in association with CARI or with other ICAR institutes has collected 1234 accessions in 48 exploration and collection missions. Variability was collected in rice, cowpea, black gram, green gram, okra, Chinese spinach, ash gourd, taro, cucumber, pumpkin, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, chilli, greater yam and coconut. Indigenous landraces are absent. The in situ conservation of the wild relatives of crops is well taken care of by a large number of protected forest reserves.  相似文献

An IgG-ELISA used recombinant antigen and a rapid flow-through enzyme immunoassay were developed for rapid screening of leptospiral antibodies in dogs using recombinant LipL41, which is one of the conserved outer membrane proteins in pathogenic leptospires as the coating antigen. Results from this study were compared with the standard microscopic agglutination test and found that the sensitivity and specificity of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were 75.46% and 93.29% and whereas that of flow-through-based dot-immunobinding assay were 87.73% and 89.63%, respectively. Relative merits of these tests were also assessed. The flow-through-based dot-immunobinding assay was thus proved to be a valid screening test for canine leptospirosis.  相似文献

Strong magnetic fluctuations can provide a coupling mechanism for electrons that leads to unconventional superconductivity. Magnetic order and superconductivity have been found to coexist in a number of magnetically mediated superconductors, but these order parameters generally compete. We report that close to the upper critical field, CeCoIn5 adopts a multicomponent ground state that simultaneously carries cooperating magnetic and superconducting orders. Suppressing superconductivity in a first-order transition at the upper critical field leads to the simultaneous collapse of the magnetic order, showing that superconductivity is necessary for the magnetic order. A symmetry analysis of the coupling between the magnetic order and the superconducting gap function suggests a form of superconductivity that is associated with a nonvanishing momentum.  相似文献

The objective was to determine if the endocrine status of the animal dictates the responsiveness of gonadotrophs to estradiol, activin, inhibin and follistatin; hormones implicated in the differential release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Bovine pituitaries were obtained at 13 (n=8), 30 (n=24) and 66 (n=8) h after the onset of estrus, corresponding to before, during and the end of the first FSH increase of the estrous cycle which follows the pre-ovulatory gonadotropin surge in heifers. Heifers slaughtered at 30 h received no treatment, or were treated with progesterone with or without estradiol before slaughter to suppress the first transient FSH increase. Secretion of FSH from cultured pituitary cells, reflecting the prior in vivo status, was greater (P<0.01) at 30 h than 13 or 66 h, whereas, LH secretion was less (P<0.01) at 13 h compared with 30 h. Treatment with exogenous steroids decreased (P<0.05) the pituitary gland's ability to subsequently secrete FSH and LH. Inhibin and, to a greater extent, estradiol decreased (P<0.01) mean FSH secretion but increased (P<0.05) mean LH secretion. These findings suggest that estradiol and inhibin both have the ability to differentially modulate basal gonadotropin secretion during the first FSH increase of the bovine estrous cycle. Differential regulation of LH and FSH is mediated via an alteration in gonadotropin biosynthesis and basal secretion. Furthermore, the secretory capability of cultured pituitary cells and basal gonadotropin secretion reflect the prior endocrine status of the animal from which pituitaries were obtained.  相似文献

Twenty-eight species belonging to five genera of the sub tribe Cajaninae; viz., Cajanus(15 species), Rhynchosia (10 species), Dunbaria, Flemingia and Paracalyx were analysed for variations in four chloroplast generegions, rbcL, trnS-psbC, 16S and trnL-UAA. The four chloroplast gene regions were amplified with specific primers and subsequently digested with 15 restriction enzymes. Rhynchosia did not show any inter-specific differences in the four gene regions for any of the enzymes used. In Cajanus, the inter-specific PCR-RFLP profile of the four gene regions for all the enzymes were similar except for the Pst I digests of trnS-psbC gene region. At inter-generic level, rbcL gene region did not show polymorphism with any of the enzymes used; while in trnS-psbC gene region polymorphism was observed only with Pst I and Hae III digestions. Inter-generic PCR-RFLP of 16S did not reveal any variation. The trnL-UAA gene region had restriction site only forEcoR I in which Cajanus and Rhynchosia showed similar profiles while Dunbaria showed a different profile. The trnL-UAA gene region in Paracalyx and Flemingia did not have restriction site for this enzyme. Despite the analyses of four gene regions using 15 restriction enzymes, differentiation at genus level could not be obtained. These observations indicated limited divergence of the chloroplast genome among the four genera of the sub-tribe Cajaninae suggesting close relationships of the taxa. Nitrogen (N) is one of the main nutrients that drive rice grain yield and is intensely managed especially in lowlands under irrigated conditions. A set of experiments was conducted in mid- and high-altitude sites in Rwanda to investigate the response of five genotypes under different sowing dates and different N management. Genotype grain yields were higher and more stable at mid-altitude across sowing dates. N rates strongly affected grain yield at mid-altitude (p < .0001), but not at high altitude. Postponing basal N had positive effects on yield and yield components in both sites, with more pronounced effects at high altitude. Increasing N rate beyond 120 kg/ha led to a decrease in percentage of panicles per tiller and spikelet fertility and a decrease in grain yield due to excessive tillers at both high altitude and mid-altitude. Thus, basal N application should be recommended at high altitude and the increase in N rate up to 120 kg/ha at mid-altitude. A strict observation of recommended planting date should be followed at high altitude, and the use of cold-tolerant genotypes is encouraged.  相似文献
