A new method of wood moisture sorption analysis is presented using sorption isotherms of a series of mildly heat-treated specimens with varied and known elemental composition. This method allows the determination of the occupancy of accessible sorption sites in wood as a function of relative humidity h, θ(h) ≈ h, found in agreement with the literature data on the non-freezing water occupancy of hydroxyl groups for h < 0.9. Complementary sorption isotherm shape analysis identifies an empirical power law occupancy function, θ(h) = h α , α ≈ 0.73, which is close to the former two determinations in the same humidity range. The validity of widely accepted surface sorption theories for wood with a strongly bound primary layer and loosely bound secondary layers is disproven. To explain the found occupancy function, θ(h) ≈ h, a near-ideal liquid mixture of moisture and polar dynamic microvoids in the cell wall substance is postulated. The power law occupancy function is used to calculate the humidity-dependent number of sorption sites in adsorption/desorption isotherms to show that (1) the number of sorption sites from the adsorption line monotonically increases with increasing humidity—argued to represent the equilibrium number of sorption sites at each humidity, and (2) the number of sorption sites from the desorption line fails to fully return to that of the (equilibrium) adsorption line. Hysteresis is quantitatively explained as the result of non-equilibrium excess sorption sites being occupied according to the occupancy law. The relaxation of non-equilibrium excess sorption sites is satisfactorily modeled by a first-order rate equation. Applying the analysis to study mild thermal modification of moisture sorption isotherms revealed that (1) moisture contents decrease directly linear to the removed amount of sorption sites at all humidity <0.95, and (2) the absolute hysteresis is nearly unaffected as a result of counter-acting effects of the reduced number of sorption sites and reduced amount of relaxation.  相似文献

Comperative study of the mineral content of damaged and visibly healthy red beeches (Fagus sylvatica) on limestone soils in the Saarland 50-80 years old red beeches from a limestone region in the Saarland, differentiated in apparently healthy and diseased trees, were investigated on their mineral content beginning with the roots over stem up to the leaves. Macro- and microelement contents were different between healthy and diseased trees. Magnesium content in the roots of the latter was markedly reduced. Also zinc and phosphorous were decreased in the damaged trees, while manganese was partially accumulated. On the other side, a high sulphur content was observed in the crown area of both types of trees.  相似文献

With a computer model, pesticide behavior in soil after spring application to a sandy loam field with a potato crop, was simulated. Special attention was paid to the risk of leaching through the upper meter of soil in catchment areas. Unsaturated water flow resulting from rainfall was modeled in some detail. Uptake of water and solute by the developing root system of the annual crop was included in the model. The computations were carried out for hypothetical pesticides with first-order decomposition rate constants in soil of 0.03, 0.01, 0.003, and 0.001 day–1 at 20°C. Adsorption decreased with increasing soil depth and the adsorption coefficient for the top layer ranged from 0.0 to 10.0. For 20 combinations of decomposition rates and adsorption strengths, the extent of leaching from a top layer 1 m thick was computed. With a decomposition rate constant at 20°C of 0.03 day–1 or higher, leaching was extremely low; with 0.01 days–1 leaching was 1.7% of the dosage or lower. For compounds with a high persistence and mobility, leaching from the soil ranged up to about 10% of the dosage or more. Besides decomposition, uptake by plants was an important factor in reducing leaching, particularly for the weakly adsorbed and comparatively persistent compounds.  相似文献

Formation of flavor compounds from branched-chain alpha-keto acids in fermented foods such as cheese is believed to be mainly an enzymatic process, while the conversion of phenyl pyruvic acid, which is derived from phenylalanine, also proceeds chemically. In this research, the chemical conversion of alpha-keto acids to aldehydes with strong flavor characteristics was studied, with the main focus on the conversion of alpha-ketoisocaproic acid to the aldehyde 2-methylpropanal, and a manganese-catalyzed reaction mechanism is proposed for this conversion. The mechanism involves keto-enol tautomerism, enabling molecular oxygen to react with the beta-carbon atom of the alpha-keto acid, resulting in a peroxide. This peroxide can react in several ways, leading to unstable dioxylactone or noncyclic intermediates. These intermediates will break down into an aldehyde and oxalate or carbon oxides (CO and CO(2)). All the alpha-keto acids tested were converted at pH 5.5 and in the presence of manganese, although their conversion rates were rather diverse. This chemical reaction might provide new ways for controlling cheese flavor formation with the aim of acceleration of the ripening process or diversification of the flavor characteristics.  相似文献

A new, strong base, macro-porous anion exchange resin, Amberlite IRA 996, appeared to be more nitrate selective than sulfate selective in treating high nitrate concentrations (18 mg NO inf3 sup? -N L?1) in potable water. When regeneration is carried out in a closed circuit in which a biological denitrification reactor is incorporated to remove nitrate from the regenerant, regeneration salt requirement and brine production can be minimized. In this combination of ion exchange and biological denitrification, regeneration with 30 g NaHCO3 L?1) is possible in 6 hr at a flow rate of 11 BV hr?1. Accumulation of sulfate in the closed regeneration circuit does not affect the nitrate capacity of the resin.  相似文献

The frontal eye field (FEF) is one of several cortical regions thought to modulate sensory inputs. Moreover, several hypotheses suggest that the FEF can only modulate early visual areas in the presence of a visual stimulus. To test for bottom-up gating of frontal signals, we microstimulated subregions in the FEF of two monkeys and measured the effects throughout the brain with functional magnetic resonance imaging. The activity of higher-order visual areas was strongly modulated by FEF stimulation, independent of visual stimulation. In contrast, FEF stimulation induced a topographically specific pattern of enhancement and suppression in early visual areas, but only in the presence of a visual stimulus. Modulation strength depended on stimulus contrast and on the presence of distractors. We conclude that bottom-up activation is needed to enable top-down modulation of early visual cortex and that stimulus saliency determines the strength of this modulation.  相似文献

Nepalese porters routinely carry head-supported loads equal to 100 to 200% of their body weight (Mb) for many days up and down steep mountain footpaths at high altitudes. Previous studies have shown that African women carry head-supported loads of up to 60% of their Mb far more economically than army recruits carrying equivalent loads in backpacks. Here we show that Nepalese porters carry heavier loads even more economically than African women. Female Nepalese porters, for example, carry on average loads that are 10% of their Mb heavier than the maximum loads carried by the African women, yet do so at a 25% smaller metabolic cost.  相似文献

A freely floating polymer film, tens of nanometers in thickness, wrinkles under the capillary force exerted by a drop of water placed on its surface. The wrinkling pattern is characterized by the number and length of the wrinkles. The dependence of the number of wrinkles on the elastic properties of the film and on the capillary force exerted by the drop confirms recent theoretical predictions on the selection of a pattern with a well-defined length scale in the wrinkling instability. We combined scaling relations that were developed for the length of the wrinkles with those for the number of wrinkles to construct a metrology for measuring the elasticity and thickness of ultrathin films that relies on no more than a dish of fluid and a low-magnification microscope. We validated this method on polymer films modified by plasticizer. The relaxation of the wrinkles affords a simple method to study the viscoelastic response of ultrathin films.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out to study the effects of different soil management practices on the water balance, precipitation use efficiency (PUE), and crop yield (i.e. winter wheat and peanut) on a loess soil near Luoyang (east edge of the Chinese Loess Plateau, Henan Province, China). Field plots were set up in 1999 including following soil management practices: subsoiling with mulch (SS), no-till with mulch (NT), reduced tillage (RT), two crops per year (i.e. winter wheat and peanut, TC), and a conventional tillage control (CT). The field plots were equipped to monitor all components of the soil–water balance except evapotranspiration, which was computed by solving the water balance equation. The results showed that although soil management had smaller influence on the magnitude of the water balance components than did precipitation variations, small influences of the applied soil management practices on water conservation during the fallow period can greatly affect winter wheat yield. SS increased consistently precipitation storage efficiency (PSE) and PUE over the 5 years compared to CT except during the wettest year. NT also had a noticeable effect on postharvest water storage during the fallow period; however, the influence on yield of NT depended on the amount of precipitation. TC lowered the winter wheat yield mainly due to the unfavorable soil moisture conditions after growing peanut in summer; however, the harvested peanut gained an extra profit for the local farmer. No matter which kind of soil management practices was adapted, PSE never exceeded 41.6%, which was primarily attributed to high evapotranspiration. From data of five consecutive agricultural years between 2000 and 2005, it could be concluded that SS resulted in the highest PSE, PUE and crop yield. TC also showed promising results considering the economic value of the second crop. NT performed slightly less as SS. CT gave intermediate results, whereas RT was the worst alternative.  相似文献
