The central districts of Japan are mountainous areas rising to 3,000 metres which are predominantly covered with forest vegetation. A comprehensive and systematic classification of the soils in this region has not yet been made, but the following soil types have been reported to occur: - 1. 1. Brown forest soils, podzolic soils, black soils and red soils. [Described by OHMASA (14)] 2. 2. Alpine grassland soils and alpine meadow soils. [Described by KUMADA et al. (9)] 3. 3. Abstract It has been well documented by short-term artificial experiments that the CH4 uptake is inhibited by N input, especially NH4 p+-N input. To investigate the effect of the natural N input by throughfall and other factors on the CH4 uptake in forest soils, we measured the CH4 uptake rates for 6 months during the snow-free period of the year and N input by throughfall throughout the year at 10 sites in Hokkaido, Japan, from 1997 to 2002. Water filled pore space (WFPS) and pH values in the soils varied widely among the sites (38-93% and 3.9-6.2, respectively). The rates of NH4 p+-N and NH3 p--N inputs ranged from 1.3 to 6.9 kg N hap-1 yearp-1 and from 0.8 to 2.9 kg N hap-1 yearp-1, respectively. The NH4 p+-N input was generally higher than the NH3 p--N input. Total N input by throughfall amounted to 2.3-9.4 kg N hap-1 yearp-1. The highest CH4 uptake rate occurred within the period from July to September (41-215 μg CH4 mp-2 hp-1) each year at most sites. CH4 uptake rate was relatively low (~50 μg CH4 M-2 hp-1) at northern sites, while a high CH4 uptake rate was observed throughout the year 100 (? CH4 mp-2 hp-1) at southern sites. The mean CH4 uptake rates were significantly different among the sites. Cumulative CH4 uptake ranged from 1.4 to 6.6 kg CH4 hap-1 [184 d]p-1 with a mean values of 3.22 ± 1.36 kg CH4 hap-1 [184 d]p-1. Cumulative CH4 uptake increased with increasing temperature and decreased with an increase in precipitation (Rain), NH4 p+-N input (TFNH4) WFPS, soil total C (TC), and total N (TN). There was a quadratic relationship between the CH4 uptake and NH3 p--N input (TFNO3), soil pH, and C / N ratio in soil. A regression equation was obtained as follows to predict the CH4 uptake in forest soils: Cumulative CH4 uptake = 0.47 / Rain + 0.38 / TFNH4 + 0.34 / TC - 0.30 / TFN03 (R p2 = 0.74, p = 0.0001). This equation indicates that atmospheric N input into forest soils is one of the main factors that control cumulative CH4 uptake with precipitation, total carbon content in soil in Hokkaido, Japan. 相似文献

We examined the response of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis L.) to aluminum (Al) exposure under sterile conditions, focusing specifically on the secretion of low molecular mass organic compounds from roots. After germination in agar medium, tea seedlings together with medium were placed on agar containing 0.4?mM Al with 0.2% hematoxyline (hematoxylin-Al medium). The purple color of the hematoxylin-Al medium was observed to fade gradually, until none of the color remained 6 days later. The tea seedlings were then treated with simple calcium solution (0.2?mM, at pH 4.2) containing AlCl3, which ranged in concentration from 0 to 0.8?mM, for 24?hrs. The amount of oxalate secreted into the medium increased as the external Al concentration increased, while the concentrations of malate and citrate in the medium remained unchanged. Oxalate secretion started within 30?min after Al exposure and increased linearly thereafter. The findings demonstrated that oxalate was a key compound in the Al-tolerance mechanism employed by the tea plant, which detoxifies Al3+ externally in the rhizosphere. In addition to oxalate, caffeine was also secreted by tea roots in response to Al exposure. It is possible that caffeine excretion from the roots of tea plants may stimulate root growth through the inhibition of callose deposition in root tips. 相似文献

We lack an understanding of nitrogen (N) cycles in tropical forests of Africa, although the environmental conditions in this region, such as soil type, vegetation, and climate, are distinct when compared with other tropical forests. Herein, we simultaneously quantified N fluxes through precipitation, throughfall, and 0-, 15-, and 30-cm soil solutions, as well as litterfall, in two forests with different soil acidity (Ultisols at the MV village (exchangeable Al3+ in 0–30 cm, 126 kmolc ha–1) and Oxisols at the AD village (exchangeable Al3+ in 0–30 cm, 59.8 kmolc ha–1)) over 2 years in Cameroon. The N fluxes to the O horizon via litterfall plus throughfall were similar for both sites (MV and AD, 243 and 273 kg N ha–1 yr–1, respectively). Those values were remarkably large relative to other tropical forests, reflecting the dominance of legumes in this region. The total dissolved N flux from the O horizon at the MV was 28 kg N ha–1 yr–1, while it was 127 kg N ha–1 yr–1 mainly as NO3–-N (~80%) at the AD. The distinctly different pattern of N cycles could be caused by stronger soil acidity at the MV, which was considered to promote a superficial root mat formation in the O horizon despite the marked dry season (fine root biomass in the O horizon and its proportion to the 1-m-soil profile: 1.5 Mg ha–1 and 31% at the MV; 0.3 Mg ha–1 and 9% at the AD). Combined with the published data for N fluxes in tropical forests, we have shown that Oxisols, in combination with N-fixing species, have large N fluxes from the O horizon; meanwhile, Ultisols do not have large fluxes because of plant uptake through the root mat in the O horizon. Consequently, our results suggest that soil type can be a major factor influencing the pattern of N fluxes from the O horizon via the effects of soil acidity, thereby determining the contrasting plant–soil N cycles in the tropical forests of Africa. 相似文献

Ten reared cows of a Japanese Black cattle herd in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan, exhibited extremely low blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration (2.6 ± 0.6 mg/dL). Examination of dietary feed nutrition and relevant pastureland soil content suggested a correlation with crude protein (CP) deficiency or unbalanced nutritional dietary feeds. Thirteen months after the introduction of a dietary remedial measure (bean cake supplementation), BUN, total cholesterol and albumin concentration from five of the original 10 cows increased significantly compared with their values of before the dietary remedy. The postpartum day open period was significantly lower after the dietary remedial measure than that before it. The abnormally low BUN levels of the cattle herd may be due to inadequate dietary nutritional content, primarily from the imbalance of total digestible nutrient and CP of the feed and far lower han average CP value. In conclusion, routine examination of serum biochemical parameters in Japanese Black breeding cattle may be a useful strategy for determining subclinical metabolic failure of cattle herds, and consequently, its effect on reproductive performance of the herd. 相似文献

Evaluation of carbon dynamics is of great concern worldwide in terms of climate change and soil fertility. However, the annual CO2 flux and the effect of land management on the carbon budget are poorly understood in Sub-Saharan Africa, owing to the relative dearth of data for in situ CO2 fluxes. Here, we evaluated seasonal variations in CO2 efflux rate with hourly climate data in two dry tropical croplands in Tanzania at two sites with contrasting soil textures, viz. clayey or sandy, over four consecutive crop-cultivation periods of 40 months. We then: (1) estimated the annual CO2 flux, and (2) evaluated the effect of land management (control plot, plant residue treatment plot, fertilizer treatment plot, and plant residue and fertilizer treatment plot) on the CO2 flux and soil carbon stock at both sites. Estimated annual CO2 fluxes were 1.0–2.2 and 0.9–1.9 Mg C ha?1 yr?1 for the clayey and sandy sites, respectively. At the end of the experiment, crop cultivation had decreased the surface soil carbon stocks by 2.4 and 3.0 Mg C ha?1 (soil depth 0–15 cm) at the clayey and sandy sites, respectively. On the other hand, plant residue application (7.5 Mg C ha?1 yr?1) significantly increased the surface soil carbon stocks, i.e., 3.5–3.8 and 1.7–2.1 Mg C ha?1 (soil depth 0–15 cm) at the clayey and sandy sites, respectively, while it also increased the annual CO2 fluxes substantially, i.e., 2.5–4.0 and 2.4–3.4 Mg C ha?1 yr?1 for the clayey and sandy soils, respectively. Our results indicate that these dry tropical croplands at least may act as a carbon sink, though the efficiency of carbon accumulation was substantially lower in sandy soil (6.8–8.4%) compared to clayey soil (14.0–15.2%), possibly owing to higher carbon loss by leaching and macro-faunal activity. 相似文献

Rhamnose-binding lectins (RBLs) have been isolated and characterized from various kinds of fish. RBLs recognize the structures of lipopolysaccharides and lipoteichoic acid on microbes, and have an opsonic effect, suggesting that RBLs play an important role as pattern recognition proteins in innate immunity. However, the function of RBLs in the removal of pathogens from the body has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of three RBLs—named CSL1, 2, and 3—that were isolated from chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta eggs on the respiratory burst activity in a macrophage cell line. The CSLs induced reactive oxygen species in the peritoneal macrophage cell line from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (RTM5). However, this activity was not affected by l-rhamnose or dl-threo-1-phenyl-2-palmitoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol, an inhibitor for glucosylceramide synthesis, indicating that the interaction between CSLs and Gb3 on cell surfaces was not involved in the induction of respiratory burst activity. 相似文献

We evaluated the anti-tumor activities of the oral administration of fucoidan extracted from Cladosiphon okamuranus using a tumor (colon 26)-bearing mouse model. The materials used included low-molecular-weight fucoidan (LMWF: 6.5–40 kDa), intermediate-molecular-weight fucoidan (IMWF: 110–138 kDa) and high-molecular-weight fucoidan (HMWF: 300–330 kDa). The IMWF group showed significantly suppressed tumor growth. The LMWF and HMWF groups showed significantly increased survival times compared with that observed in the control group (mice fed a fucoidan-free diet). The median survival times in the control, LMWF, IMWF and HMWF groups were 23, 46, 40 and 43 days, respectively. It was also found that oral administration of fucoidan increased the population of natural killer cells in the spleen. Furthermore, from the results of the experiment using Myd-88 knockout mice, it was found that these effects are related to gut immunity. These results suggest that fucoidan is a candidate anti-tumor functional food. 相似文献

The tropical pasture grass Brachiaria humidiola (Rendle) Schweick releases nitrification inhibitory compounds from its roots, a phenomenon termed 'biological nitrification inhibition' (BNI). We investigated the influence of root exudates of B. humidicola on nitrification, major soil microorganisms and plant growth promoting microorganisms using two contrasting soil types, Andosol and Cambisol. The addition of root exudates (containing BNI activity that is expressed in Allylthiourea unit (ATU) was standardized in a bioassay against a synthetic inhibitor of nitrification, allylthiourea, and their function in soil was compared to inhibition caused by the synthetic nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide. At 30 and 40 ATU g−1 soil, root exudates inhibited nitrification by 95% in fresh Cambisol after 60 days. Nitrification was also similarly inhibited in rhizosphere soils of Cambisol where B. humidicola was grown for 6 months. Root exudates did not inhibit other soil microorganisms, including gram-negative bacteria, total cultivable bacteria and fluorescent pseudomonads. Root exudates, when added to pure cultures of Nitrosomonas europaea , inhibited their growth, but did not inhibit the growth of several plant growth promoting microorganisms, Azospirillum lipoferum , Rhizobium leguminosarum and Azotobacter chroococcum. Our results indicate that the nitrification inhibitors released by B. humidicola roots inhibited nitrifying bacteria, but did not negatively affect other major soil microorganisms and the effectiveness of the inhibitory effect varied with soil type. 相似文献
