A molecular sexing method using the intron‐size difference between chromo‐helicase‐DNA binding protein (CHD1) genes on the Z and W sex chromosomes (CHD1Z and CHD1W, respectively) was developed for wild Jungle crows and wild Carrion crows. The polymerase chain reaction product sizes were 661 bp for CHD1Z and 465 bp for CHD1W in both the Jungle and the Carrion crows. Each male crow sample produced a single fragment (CHD1Z), whereas female samples produced two fragments (CHD1Z and CHD1W), which differed by 200 bp in crows. In the present study, sexing live Jungle and Carrion crows was performed by applying the method to a feather for molecular sexing. 相似文献

To obtain basic knowledge about selecting horses for therapeutic riding, the influence of
equine conformation on rider oscillation and relationships between these factors and the
evaluation on horses as the therapeutic riding were studied. Thirty-five riding horses
were used. Equine conformation was estimated by 24 indices. Rider oscillation was measured
by an accelerometer fixed at the rider’s waist. The spatial position of the oscillation
was estimated by a double integration of the acceleration. Horses were evaluated for
therapeutic riding by a Riding for the Disabled Association instructor as a rider.
Evaluations were on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score for 27 items. Horses
were classified into 4 groups: the short and narrow (SN), short and wide (SW), tall and
narrow (TN), and tall and wide (TW). The frequencies of rider oscillation both at walk and
trot were higher (P<0.01), and the vertical (P<0.01) and longitudinal (P<0.05)
amplitudes at trot were smaller, on short horses than on tall horses. The vertical
amplitude at walk was smaller (P<0.05) and the lateral amplitude at trot was larger
(P<0.01) on wide horses than on narrow horses. Short horses could be used for the rider
who requires side walkers. Wide horses could be used for relieving muscular tension and
for the rider who could not maintain good balance on the horse. Short and wide horses

Feline serum amyloid A (SAA) cDNA clone was isolated from a hepatic mRNA of a mixed-breed cat. The feline SAA cDNA clone contains 333 nucleotides and deduced amino acid sequence shows 87.4%, 73.9%, and 65.8% homology with dog, human and mouse SAA respectively. Relative to the human and mouse SAA proteins, an additional peptide of eight amino acids is specified in the feline cDNA clone. Recombinant feline SAA (rfSAA) was expressed at high levels using pGEX bacterial expression system. Cleavage from the fusion moiety, and purification using glutathione-sepharose yielded pure soluble form of rfSAA. Antibodies generated against rfSAA were specific for feline SAA and showed no cross-reactivity with human SAA. Furthermore, antibodies against human SAA did not react with feline SAA. These results indicate that antigenicity of feline SAA is totally different from human SAA. 相似文献

Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) is an important fish species for professional and sport fisheries in the Alto-Paraguay Basin, located in the central western Brazil. In this study the D-loop control region of mtDNA sequence data was used to investigate genetic variability within and among populations of pacu. A total of 99 individuals were collected in the Paraguay River and in four other main tributaries. From these, 27 different haplotypes were observed. The overall nucleotide diversity and haplotype diversity were high in all sampling sites with 0.013 ± 0.001 and 0.840 ± 0.035, respectively. Hierarchical AMOVA analysis showed that pacu populations form a single panmictic population with low ΦST = ?0.0012 (p = 0.486) and high gene flow among rivers. Despite high genetic variability, the total capture officially landed in the Upper-Paraguay River Basin has been decreasing steadily during the last years with indications of overexploitation. Taking into account the heterogeneity of habitats, continuous anthropogenic disturbances and lack of genetic structure, it appears that fish from these sampling sites function as a metapopulation, a framework that may be applied to long term fishery management of pacu in the Panatanal. 相似文献

Water extractable organic matter (WEOM) derived from fresh- or early-stage decomposing soil amendment materials may play an
important role in the process of organic matter accumulation. In this study, eight WEOM samples extracted with a 40:1 (v/w) water to sample ratio from alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), corn (Zea mays L.), crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.), lupin (Lupinus albus L.), soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and dairy manure were investigated using ultraviolet (UV)–visible, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and solid state 13C NMR spectroscopies. UV–visible and FT-IR spectra of the plant-derived WEOM samples were typical for natural organic matter,
but possessed less humic-like characteristics than dairy manure-derived WEOM. Solution 31P NMR spectra indicated that WEOM samples extracted from alfalfa, corn, and soybean shoots contained both orthophosphate and
monoester P. Of the monoester P in WEOM from soybean shoot, 70% was phytate P. WEOM from crimson clover, hairy vetch, lupin,
and wheat shoots contained orthophosphate only. The solid-state 13C NMR spectra of the seven plant-derived WEOM samples indicated that they all were primarily composed of sugars, amino acids
or peptides, and low molecular mass carboxylic acids. Carbohydrates were dominant components with very few aromatics present
in these samples. In addition, WEOM from crimson clover and lupin, but not other three leguminous plant WEOM samples, contained
significant asparagine. On the other hand, WEOM from corn and wheat contained less amino acids or peptides. The spectra of
WEOM of dairy manure revealed the presence of significant amounts of nonprotonated carbons and lignin residues, suggesting
humification of the manure-derived WEOM. Significant carbohydrates as well as aromatics were present in this WEOM. The P and
C bonding information for these WEOM samples may be useful for understanding the effects of WEOM on soil nutrient availability
to plants.

Cercidiphyllum japonicum and C. magnificum are deciduous tree species that produce large numbers of sprouts. They are found mainly in riparian and/or disturbed areas.
C. japonicum is distributed in the montane zone in Japan, whereas C. magnificum is distributed mostly in the subalpine zone of central Japan. However, the two species sometimes coexist, e.g., on the talus
slope at the valley head of the Chichibu Mountains. We investigated differences in sprouting traits in these two species by
comparing class distributions of sprout diameter at breast height (DBH) and heights of individuals on the talus slope. Sprout
DBH and individual height were smaller in C. magnificum as compared to C. japonicum. Moreover, the analysis of the DBH-class distribution of each species indicated that C. magnificum had numerous small sprouts and experienced high mortality, whereas C. japonicum had fewer small sprouts and low mortality. It is likely that the sprouting traits of C. magnificum make it more adapted to severe conditions in the subalpine zone than those of C. japonicum. 相似文献

Otitis externa in 27 toy poodles and 40 miniature dachshunds was treated using a video otoscope. A distinct concavity (external tympanic concavity) was observed at the junction between the ventral part of the external surface of the tympanum and the ear canal to which a considerable amount of hair and debris had adhered. All hair and debris adhering to the external tympanic concavity were removed, and systemic antibiotic and antifungal agents were administered, after which all of the dogs recovered. The pattern of hair growth observed in the external tympanic concavity could be characterized according to the breed of dog. All of the toy poodles presented with curly hairs, while the miniature dachshunds had upright or flat-lying hairs. 相似文献

High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), a nonhistone chromosomal protein, has recently been suggested as a late mediator of the inflammatory cascade. Blood HMGB1 levels are increased in a number of human diseases, and HMGB1 has been suggested to be a useful marker for disease severity and prognosis. The objective of this study was to assess the clinical usefulness of HMGB1 in dogs. Plasma HMGB1 levels, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP), a typical canine inflammatory marker, were measured in dogs with various diseases, especially systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and dogs that had undergone surgery. HMGB1 gradually increased and attained a maximum level 72 hr after surgery, whereas CRP increased rapidly, peaking at 24 hr. Although both HMGB1 and CRP levels were significantly increased in dogs with various diseases compared with the control dogs, no correlation was found between the HMGB1 and CRP values. HMGB1 levels in the SIRS group were significantly elevated compared with those in the non-SIRS group. However, the increase in HMGB1 levels above the reference range was not indicative of SIRS. Instead, the presence of increased HMGB1 and CRP levels above the reference ranges significantly affects the poor outcome of SIRS. The present study indicates that HMGB1 is a novel canine inflammatory marker and is distinct from CRP. However, the additional clinical value of HMGB1 measurement remains unclear, and further studies are warranted. 相似文献

BCL6 is known to be a key molecule in germinal center (GC) formation of lymph nodes, and its expression profiles have been implicated in the prognosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in humans. The present study was carried out to characterize canine BCL6 cDNA and to indicate the technical methods for detection of the BCL6 protein in dog tissues. The deduced amino acid sequence of canine BCL6 showed close homology to that of human BCL6 (96.3%), especially in the zinc-finger motifs and POZ (poxvirus and zinc finger) domain with complete identity. Immunoblot analysis of a canine lymph node with an anti-human BCL6 monoclonal antibody revealed a band of 80 kDa. Immunohistochemical staining using the same antibody produced positive reactions in the cells exclusively localized in the GC of a canine lymph node. This study will be useful for the molecular classification of canine B-cell lymphomas with different prognoses. 相似文献
