The aim of this study was to determine the level of circulating immune complexes (CIC) in equine serum and the electrophoretic properties of the protein fraction thereof. The study was carried out using 42 clinically healthy breeding horses of noble half-blood. The average extinction value of CIC's in equine serum was E450 nm = 0.278 ± 0.09 nm. Generally, 23 protein fractions were identified in the molecular mass range between 294 and 25 kDa. Eight fractions whose molecular masses were 137, 72, 65, 52, 42, 32, 28, and 26 kDa, respectively, appeared in all analyzed samples. In 20 of the analyzed serum an additional nine protein fractions whose molecular masses were 260, 110, 84, 78, 67, 62, 57, 45, and 39 kDa, respectively, were identified. Circulating immune complexes are a source of information about immunologic processes that take place in mammals. Determining the average values of CIC levels and identifying the electrophoretic profile of proteins in clinically healthy horses could be useful in research and diagnostics.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of intravenous detomidine on Schirmer tear test (STT) results in clinically normal horses. Eighteen adult horses were randomly divided into two groups of nine horses each. The treatment group was sedated with intravenous detomidine alone (20 μg/kg), and the control group received only intravenous saline (0.2 mL/100 kg). Schirmer tear test was performed just before intravenous administration of detomidine or saline in treatment and control groups, respectively. Schirmer tear tests were repeated 5, 20, 60, and 120 minutes later. Horses enrolled in this study consisted of nine males and nine females. Breeds were Arabian and Hanoverian, ranging from 3 to 6 years in age. In the treatment group, the pretreatment and subsequent posttreatment mean ± standard deviation values were 17.0 ± 6.9 (0 minutes), 11.8 ± 2.9 (5 minutes), 12.1 ± 2.0 (20 minutes), 12.1 ± 3.1 (60 minutes), and 15.0 ± 2.8 (120 minutes) mm wetting/min. In this group of horses, a significant reduction was observed in STT values at 5, 20, and 60 minutes after treatment with detomidine hydrochloride in comparison to the pretreatment values (analysis of variance with post hoc testing; P5 = 0.004, P20 = 0.007, P60 = 0.006). There was no significant difference between baseline values and posttreatment values in the control saline group (P ≥ .08). We conclude that intravenous detomidine causes a significant reduction in STT values in clinically normal horses. In horses, practitioners should measure STT values before intravenous administration of detomidine to accurately assess the results.  相似文献

Physiological and hematochemical changes associated with exercise have been extensively investigated in equine species. It is known that stress elevates circulating levels of acute phase proteins (APPs). This survey evaluated whether horses trained with different training programs exhibit changes in APP levels after exercise event. Twenty Saddle Italian horses (11 geldings and 9 females, 9 ± 1 years old, body weight of 425 ± 35 kg) were divided into two equal groups according to the intensity of training programs they were subjected: group A was subjected to an intense training program, group B was subjected to a moderate training program. At the end of the training period, horses were subjected to a simulated exercise event (show jumping course of 400 m length with 12 obstacles). From horses, blood samples were collected at rest conditions (TREST) and after 12 and 24 hour from the end of exercise (T12 h and T24 h); the concentration of serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin, albumin, total proteins, iron, and fibrinogen was assessed. The circulating levels of SAA, fibrinogen, and iron were influenced by simulated exercise event (P < .01), starting from 12 hour after the end of exercise, suggesting the onset of an acute phase–like response, and it would seem that training program intensity the horses underwent also affected the degree of response, although only SAA values were significantly different between groups (P < .001). The findings obtained suggest that jumping exercise induces an acute phase response; however, further studies are advocated to better evaluate mechanisms by which exercise activates this response in the athletic horse.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine effects of intravenous detomidine on intraocular pressure (IOP) readings obtained by applanation tonometry in clinically normal horses. Twenty horses were randomly divided into two groups of 10 each (treatment and control). All horses in the treatment group received intravenous detomidine alone (20 μg/kg). The horses in the control group received only intravenous saline (0.2 mL/100 kg). The IOP values were measured before the treatment (T0) and then at 5 (T5), 20 (T20), 60 (T60), and 120 (T120) minutes after drug administration in both groups. A significant decrease in IOP values was observed in both right and left eyes of the horses in the treatment group at T5, T20, and T60 in comparison with the baseline values (P < .001). The observed decrease was only statistically significant in the right eyes of the treatment group horses at T120 (P = .044). Mean IOP was not significantly altered at any time point during the treatment period compared with the baseline evaluations in both eyes of the horses in the control group. This study demonstrates that the use of intravenous detomidine lowers IOP quickly.  相似文献

The long-term effects of gestational immaturity in the premature (defined as < 320 days gestation) and dysmature (normal term but showing some signs of prematurity) foal have not been thoroughly investigated. Studies have reported that a high percentage of gestationally immature foals with related orthopedic issues such as incomplete ossification may fail to fulfill their intended athletic purpose, particularly in Thoroughbred racing. In humans, premature birth is associated with shorter stature at maturity and variations in anatomical ratios, linked to alterations in metabolism and timing of physeal closure in the long bones. We hypothesized that gestational immaturity in horses might similarly be associated with reduced height and different anatomical ratios at maturity. In this preliminary study, the skeletal ratios of horses with a history of gestational immaturity, identified through veterinary and breeder records, were compared with those of unaffected, closely related horses (i.e., sire, dam, sibling). External measurements were taken from conformation photographs of cases (n = 19) and related horses (n = 28), and these were then combined into indices to evaluate and compare metric properties of conformation. A principal component analysis showed that the first two principal components account for 43.8% of the total conformational variation of the horses’ external features, separating horses with a rectangular conformation (body length > height at the withers), from those that are more square (body length = height at the withers). Varimax rotation of PC1 and analysis of different gestational groups showed a significant effect of gestational immaturity (P = .001), with the premature group being more affected than the dysmature group (P = .009, P = .012). Mean values for the four dominant indices showed that these groups have significantly lower distal limb to body length relationships than controls. The observed differences suggest that gestational immaturity may affect anatomical ratios at maturity, which, in combination with orthopedic issues arising from incomplete ossification, may have a further impact on long-term athletic potential.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) supplementation on the populations of specific cellulolytic (Fibrobacter succinogenes and Ruminococcus flavefaciens) and saccharolytic (Streptococcus equinus and Streptococcus bovis) bacteria in the feces of horses fed high-starch and high-fiber diets. Four horses were each fed diets consisting of high fiber with no yeast (HF), high fiber with yeast (HFY), high starch with no yeast (HS), and high starch with yeast (HSY) in a 4 × 4 Latin-square design study. Fresh fecal samples were collected on the last 3 days of each 31-day experimental period and were then assessed, using semiquantitative real-time PCR, for total bacterial load and levels of target bacterial species, relative to the total bacterial load. The most abundant of the target species was F. succinogenes, and the HSY diet resulted in a significant (P = .045) reduction in relative levels of this bacterium. No significant effect (P = .224) of diet was observed in relation to abundance of R. flavefaciens. Results show that diet did not have a significant (P = .068) effect on relative quantities of S. equinus, although there appeared to be a trend for increased levels of this bacterium during feeding of high-starch diets. Numbers of S. bovis were higher (P < .001) when horses were fed HS and HSY diets than when fed the HF and HFY diets. Significant variation in levels of S. equinus (P = .024) and S. bovis (P = .049) was observed between individual horses.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a commercially available di-tri-octahedral (DTO) smectite product on clinical signs and prevalence of post-operative diarrhea in horses with colic associated with disease of the large intestine. Sixty-seven horses with surgical disease of the large intestine were randomly assigned to be treated with DTO smectite (n = 37; 0.5 kg via nasogastric intubation every 24 h for 3 days post-operatively) or a placebo (n = 30). The effect of treatment on fecal scores and clinical and hematological parameters, including heart rate, mucous membrane color, temperature, total white blood cell count, total neutrophil count and total plasma protein values, were determined.Horses treated with DTO smectite had a significant reduction in the prevalence of post-operative diarrhea (10.8%), compared with controls (41.4%). A significant improvement in mucous membrane color was observed 72 h post-operatively in horses receiving treatment, compared with placebo. Administration of DTO smectite to colic patients with disease of the large intestine reduced the occurrence of diarrhea in the early post-operative period.  相似文献

Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is generally caused by Sarcocystis neurona and can produce substantial economic losses on equine production in America. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the seroprevalence of S. neurona in the main horse-production area of Argentina and associate it with the occurrence of neurologic disorders. Serum samples were collected from 640 horses in nine Argentinean provinces. Most of the samples correspond to animals ≥1.5-year-old from different breeds (n = 628); 12 samples were from younger horses. Further seroprevalence comparison was conducted from the older animals grouped with (n = 148) or without neurologic signs (n = 480). Immunoblot: proteins from 2 × 107S. neurona merozoites were used as antigen on each membrane. Reactivity to antigens with relative mobility of 7, 10, and 16 kDa was considered specific for antibodies against S. neurona; reactivity at 30 kDa was recorded separately. The overall seroprevalence for S. neurona was 26.1% (167/640), and all the provinces had positive horses. Seroprevalence of animals with neurologic signs was greater (P < .001) than what was observed in normal horses (39.2% vs. 22.1%), with an odds ratio of 2.27. Reactivity at 30 kDa was detected in 71% of all samples. This study identified a wide distribution of S. neurona–positive animals in Argentina and horses with neurologic signs having a greater seroprevalence than normal horses. Sarcocystis neurona infection should be considered for early differential diagnosis and treatment of animals with neurologic disorders to decrease the economic impact of EPM in Argentina.  相似文献

Some success has been demonstrated using percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) to treat trigeminal-mediated headshaking (TMHS) in horses. The aim of this study is to determine whether electroacupuncture (EA) can provide similar remission from the pain of this debilitating condition. EA is less invasive than PENS and can be carried out in the stable yard without the need for a hospital setting and expensive equipment. Six horses and ponies showing clinical signs of headshaking were treated with electroacupuncture of the infraorbital nerve under light sedation. The nerve was stimulated with alternating 2 and 80 Hz frequencies for a period of 25 min with the current adjusted so that there was visible twitching of the nostrils and/or lips. Follow-up treatments were given when the signs recurred or 4–7 days later if there was no initial response. The procedure was well tolerated by all the horses. Once a response was achieved, the period of remission often increased with subsequent treatments. Median remission time for the first treatment was 5.5 days (mean 7.6 days, range 0–13 days, n = 6). second treatment 8.5 days (mean 10.6 days, range 7–21 days, n = 6), third treatment 18 days (mean 28.8 days, range 6–71 days, n = 6), fourth treatment 47.5 days (mean 10 weeks, range 11 days–23 weeks, n = 6), fifth treatment 13 weeks 5 days (mean 18 weeks 5 days, range 5 weeks–46 weeks, n = 5), sixth treatment 24 days (mean 26 days, range 13–41 days, n = 3). The three horses that started treatment in 2015 received a single treatment in April or May of 2016 and were still asymptomatic at the end of the study period in October 2016. It was concluded that EA of the infraorbital nerve is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for the management of horses considered to be experiencing trigeminal-mediated headshaking.  相似文献

Wildlife protection and management are important priorities for landscape identity and biodiversity preservation. Feeding practices of fauna confined in facilities during temporary captivity are fundamental to support animal health and natural behavior. Appropriate provision of feedstuffs appears to be necessary to support the best practices in respect of animal species-specific natural diet. This investigation explored the variation of the metabolic profile by means of selected metabolite and respective circulating levels in a group feral Giara horses undergoing the change of the diet, moving from natural free grazing in the wild to temporary captivity. Six Giara horses (4 mares and 2 stallions; estimated age: 2.5–3 years; body weight: 163–170 kg) were captured to monitor the serological reaction to equine infectious anemia (EIA; screening at Coggins test). Animals were sheltered in a wildlife rescue center for a duration of 4 weeks, and all received the same hay-based diet (ad libitum). On 0 and 28 days of captivity, blood serum alpha-tocopherol (α-TOH) concentration was determined alongside selected metabolites (liver enzymes, total protein and fractions, cholesterol, triglycerides, and macrominerals and trace elements). Comparative feces quality and composition were also assessed. Both serum samples (0 vs. 28 days) displayed α-TOH levels below (<2 μg/mL) adequacy established for the domestic horse. Initial levels markedly (P = .020) decreased after the 4 weeks of captivity (Δ = −32.5%). Vitamin E status and ALT levels varied significantly, but serum protein fractions did not point to significant variations before and after captivity. All horses tested negative to EIA. Monitoring of vitamin E status of wild and feral herbivores may be recommendable in the context of adequate feeding practices during captivity to prevent potential deficiency or excessive depletion.  相似文献

Scirrhous cord (SC) is an uncommon complication of castration, characterised by chronic infection of the spermatic cord remnant. It is reported that surgical excision of the infected tissue is the most effective means of treatment, but there are few published studies assessing the outcomes of horses treated for SC. The aims of this retrospective study were to describe the clinical features and short-term outcomes in horses treated for SC at two equine hospitals in the UK. The clinical records of horses diagnosed with SC over a 10-year period were reviewed. A diagnosis of SC was made if the gelding presented with typical clinical signs with confirmation at surgery. Thirty-two cases of SC were identified at the two equine hospitals. The mean age at presentation was 6 years (range 2–14 years, n = 22), and the median time from castration to presentation was 29.5 days (range 20–2500 days). Mean age at castration was 4.3 years (range 6 months to 10 years, n = 10). Clinical signs included scrotal swelling, discharging wounds, hindlimb lameness and pyrexia. Five horses demonstrated hyperfibrinogenaemia (n = 8). Microbial culture isolated various bacterial species. All 32 cases were treated with surgical excision of the infected tissue and discharged from the hospitals between 1 and 10 days post-operatively. A limitation of this study is that it was a retrospective study with no long-term follow-up available. It was concluded that the results of this study confirm that SC can present at variable time points following castration, even many years later, and that a variety of bacterial species may be involved. Surgical excision of infected tissue is a successful treatment with a good short-term prognosis for survival.  相似文献

Cellobiose is a disaccharide with potential prebiotic effects, as demonstrated in different animal species, but not yet in horses. It was, therefore, the aim of the present study to evaluate the impact of dietary cellobiose on the fecal microbiota of horses. Eight healthy adult horses and two ponies were included in this study. The animals received a diet without or with 10 g and 20 g cellobiose per day for 14 days each. At the end of the feeding periods, fresh fecal samples were collected to measure bacterial metabolites and the microbial composition. For the microbiota analysis, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used. Cellobiose was well accepted and tolerated by the animals. The lowest fecal concentrations of D-lactate, propionic acid, i-valeric acid, and total short-chain fatty acids were measured at the dose 10 g cellobiose per horse per day (quadratic effect: P < .05). A dose-dependent increase of the relative abundance of Firmicutes (P = .049), Coriobacteriales (P < .001), and Clostridium (P = .031) could be detected. In addition, a dose-dependent decrease of the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes (P = .035) was observed. In conclusion, the increase of Coriobacteriales and Clostridium indicates a bacterial fermentation of cellobiose in the equine intestine, as members of both groups exert saccharolytic activity. As clostridia have previously been assumed to be a key component of the intestinal microbiota in horses, the observed increase of Clostridium in the feces might indicate beneficial and potentially prebiotic effects of cellobiose in horses. However, this finding requires further investigation, particularly with regard to the Clostridium species that have been promoted by dietary cellobiose.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate whether equine serum amyloid A (SAA) concentrations could be reliably measured in plasma with a turbidimetric immunoassay previously validated for equine SAA concentrations in serum. Paired serum and lithium-heparin samples obtained from 40 horses were evaluated. No difference was found in SAA concentrations between serum and plasma using a paired t test (P = 0.48). The correlation between paired samples was 0.97 (Spearman’s rank P < 0.0001; 95% confidence interval 0.95–0.99). Passing-Bablok regression analyses revealed no differences between paired samples. Bland–Altman plots revealed a positive bias in plasma compared to serum but the difference was not considered clinically significant. The results indicate that lithium-heparin plasma samples are suitable for measurement of equine SAA using this method. Use of either serum or plasma allows for greater flexibility when it comes to sample collection although care should be taken when comparing data between measurements from different sample types.  相似文献

The use of hair as a sample matrix to determine the mineral status of an animal has received a lot of interest. The objective of this study was to determine if the trace element content in horse mane hair changed with age when evaluated in a group of horses representing a large age range. As a second objective, whole blood trace element content was evaluated, and its relationship to mane hair trace element content, as well as age, were tested. Therefore, mane hair and whole blood samples were obtained from 59 horses, ranging from 2 months to 26 years in age, housed on the same farm. Mane hair samples were washed, and hair and blood digested and analyzed for 11 trace elements. Weak correlations (P < .05) between age and mane hair trace element content was detected for arsenic (r = 0.29), copper (r = −0.39) and selenium (r = −0.27). While the mane hair color did not affect trace element concentration, greater variability was detected in the black mane hair samples. This resulted in outliers that were removed from the final statistical analysis. However, data is presented to the reader both ways. Correlations were also detected (P < .05) between age and whole blood iron (r = 0.62), selenium (r = 0.76) and zinc (r = 0.47). This is similar to what has been reported in horses using serum or plasma. The trace element concentrations of mane hair and whole blood were not correlated (P > .05) in this study. However, the concentrations of trace elements in mane hair were higher than that of blood. Trace elements, specifically chromium and lead, that were below detection levels in the blood, were detectable in mane hair. This suggests that mane hair may be a potential means to investigate suspected exposure to excessive levels of trace minerals or heavy metals that are difficult to detect in blood.  相似文献

This paper summarises the clinical findings of 9 cases of disseminated alimentary mycobacteriosis in horses presented at a Finnish referral equine hospital 2009–2014. Four of 9 horses were Standardbreds and 8/9 horses were male. The median age was 2 years, ranging from 6 months to 15 years. The duration of clinical signs before admission ranged from 2 weeks to 6 months. All horses demonstrated deterioration of the clinical signs after a protracted period of the disease and were finally subjected to euthanasia after poor response to multiple medical therapies. The most common complaints on admission were weight loss and diarrhoea (9/9), pyrexia (7/9), ventral oedema (7/9), lethargy (7/9) and inappetance (6/9). The most common clinicopathological abnormalities were hypoalbuminaemia and hyperfibrinogenaemia, which were present in all horses. Rectal biopsy specimens were examined from 5/9 horses and specimens were stained with Ziehl‐Nielsen (ZN). At rectal biopsy, mild multifocal neutrophilic or mild granulomatous proctitis was recognised in all 5 horses, but the ZN stain for mycobacteria was positive in only one biopsy. A liver biopsy was taken from one horse in which hepatomegaly was observed clinically and revealed marked granulomatous hepatitis with the presence of mycobacteria. The rectal biopsy from this horse was ZN negative. At post mortem examination, chronic, multifocal to coalescing granulomatous typhlocolitis and lymphadenitis were found in all horses with the small intestine less frequently involved. At histopathological examination of post mortem samples, a ZN stain was performed and intracellular acid‐fast bacilli were identified in macrophages and multinucleated giant cells in the large intestine, liver and lymph nodes in 9/9 horses and in the small intestine in 5/9 horses. Mycobacterium avium ssp. hominissuis was isolated in 5/9 horses from post mortem samples.  相似文献

The effects of whole body vibration (WBV) in horses with chronic lameness were evaluated in an experimental, single subject, repeated measure design. To assess the long-term effect of WBV, eight horses not previously exposed to WBV were subject to WBV, 30 minutes twice daily, five days a week, for 60 days in addition to their regular exercise routine. Lameness was assessed subjectively and objectively 30 days before the start, at the start and 30 and 60 days after the start of the treatment (WBV). The immediate effect of WBV was assessed in four horses accustomed to WBV, by comparing lameness before and within 30 minutes of a single 30-minute WBV session at four different time intervals. Change in lameness was sought using paired t tests on the kinematic data. A P-value of <.05 was considered statistically significant. Intraindividual change was sought using a subjective and objective scoring system. No statistically significant change in lameness was seen after 30 or 60 days of WBV, respectively, in the chronically lame horses not previously exposed to WBV. However, a trend toward improvement was observed after the first 30 days of WBV, but this improvement appeared to be lost during the second 30 days of WBV. Although a statistically significant worsening of front limb lameness was seen immediately after a single 30-minute WBV session in the chronically lame horses accustomed to WBV, this result was largely attributed to a very significant worsening of the front limb lameness in one horse within that group.  相似文献

Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is a common condition in stabled horses characterised by small airway inflammation, airway neutrophilia and obstruction following exposure of susceptible horses to mouldy hay and straw and is thus regarded as a hypersensitivity reaction to mould spores. However, the role of IgE-mediated reactions in RAO remains unclear. The aim of the study was to investigate with a serological IgE ELISA test (Allercept?), an in vitro sulfidoleukotriene (sLT) release assay (CAST®) and with intradermal testing (IDT) whether serum IgE and IgE-mediated reactions against various mould, mite and pollen extracts are associated with RAO. IDT reactions were evaluated at different times in order to detect IgE-mediated immediate type reactions (type I hypersensitivity reactions, 0.5–1 h), immune complex-mediated late type reactions (type III reactions, 4–10 h) and cell-mediated delayed type reactions (type IV hypersensitivity reactions 24–48 h).In the serological test, overall the control horses displayed more positive reactions than the RAO-affected horses but the difference was not significant. Comparison of the measured IgE levels showed that the RAO-affected horses had slightly higher IgE levels against Aspergillus fumigatus than controls (35 and 16 AU, respectively, p < 0.05), but all values were below the cut off (150 AU) of the test. In the sLT release assay, seven positive reactions were observed in the RAO-affected horses and four in the controls but this difference was not significant.A significantly higher proportion of late type IDT reactions was observed in RAO-affected horses compared to controls (25 of 238 possible reactions versus 12 of 238 possible reactions, respectively, p < 0.05). Interestingly, four RAO-affected but none of the control horses reacted with the recombinant mould allergen A. fumigatus 8 (rAsp f 8, p < 0.05), but only late phase and delayed type reactions were observed. In all three tests the majority of the positive reactions was observed with the mite extracts (64%, 74% and 88% of all positive reactions, respectively) but none of the tests showed a significant difference between RAO-affected and control animals. Our findings do not support that IgE-mediated reactions are important in the pathogenesis of RAO. Further studies are needed to investigate whether sensitisation to mite allergens is of clinical relevance in the horse and to understand the role of immune reactions against rAsp f 8.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the application of acute phase protein assays for C-reactive protein (CRP), haptoglobin (HP), and serum amyloid A (SAA) in the diagnosis of Encephalitozoon cuniculi (ECUN) infection in pet rabbits. Serum samples from 48 pet rabbits were submitted from veterinary clinics within the United States. Participating veterinarians completed a questionnaire that was used to classify rabbits as either non-ECUN suspect (n = 19) or suspected of having ECUN infection (n = 29). A previously described enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay diagnostic test was used to detect immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers against ECUN. Samples were additionally tested for levels of CRP, HP, and SAA. A nearly 10-fold mean increase in CRP levels was observed in the ECUN-suspect group. This increase was significant (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in HP or SAA levels between the clinical groups. These data support the use of CRP as an adjunct test in the diagnosis of ECUN infection in pet rabbits.  相似文献

This study aims to validate the efficacy of a new device specifically developed for equine lamellar biopsy. Nine adult horses were used. Under sedation and digital nerve perineural anesthesia and after keratinized tissue thinning, a sample from the dorsal lamellar stratum was obtained using an instrument called Falcão-Faleiros' lamellotome. Hoof pain sensitivity was evaluated for 60 days, and horses were monitored for 6 months. Lateromedial radiographic images to analyze the spatial relationship between the distal phalanx and the hoof capsule were obtained before and 30 days after the biopsy. The effect of time on the variables was statistically analyzed (P < .05). On average (±SD), the biopsies produced samples that were 2.32 (±0.64) cm in length, 0.48 (±0.09) in width, and 0.51 (±0.11) cm in depth. A mean of 69 of intact primary epidermal lamellae was obtained per biopsy sample. Lameness and sensitivity to hoof testers were evident during the first 4 days postbiopsy but returned to basal levels after the fifth day. Minimal radiographic changes were observed, and the horses completely returned to their regular activities after 60 days. All biopsied hoofs grew normally during the 6-month period, making the dorsal wall defects reach the ground level. The use of the lamellotome for equine hoof lamellar biopsy produced an adequate quality and quantity of tissue for histology and allowed for full clinical recovery of the horses.  相似文献

This study reports a distinct presentation of cellulitis, which involved formation of perisuspensory abscessation in eight horses. Medical records of horses presented for cellulitis unresponsive to medical treatment were reviewed. Cases in which perisuspensory abscesses were diagnosed were included. All abscesses formed between the cannon bone and suspensory ligament and extended around one or both suspensory branches. Abscesses were diagnosed via ultrasonography upon admission in three horses and developed within a few days following admission in five horses. All horses were treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, topical therapies and regional limb perfusions; however, only partial improvement of clinical signs was observed with medical therapy alone. Full resolution of clinical signs was obtained in all cases once the abscess was surgically lanced and drained. The surgical drainage was performed standing in seven cases and under general anaesthesia in one. In all cases, Staphylococcus aureus was cultured. Six out of eight isolates showed at least some level of antibiotic resistance, and penicillin and trimethoprim sulfonamides were most commonly involved. Short-term complications included skin necrosis in two cases and mild impaction colic in two cases and were successfully treated. All horses were discharged from the hospital within 4–13 days and were sound upon discharge. All Thoroughbreds (n = 7) were able to return to their intended use, and the Standardbred was unraced prior to the cellulitis event and remained unraced afterwards.  相似文献
