Physical activity and stress both cause an increase in cortisol release ratio. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of saliva samples for the determination of cortisol concentrations indicating the work‐load level in horses during race training. Twelve Purebred Arabian horses aged 3–5 years were studied during the routine training session. After the warm‐up, the horses galloped on the 800 m sand track at a speed of 12.8 m/s. Three saliva samples, and three blood samples were collected from each horse. Both types of samples were taken at rest, immediately after return from the track and after 30 min restitution. The concentrations of blood lactic acid (LA), and cortisol in saliva and plasma samples were measured and analyzed. Blood LA, plasma and salivary cortisol levels increased significantly after exercise (P < 0.05). Salivary cortisol concentration determined 30 min after the exercise correlated significantly with plasma cortisol level obtained immediately after exercise (P < 0.05) as well as measured 30 min after the end of exercise (P < 0.05). The determination of cortisol concentration in saliva samples taken from racehorses 30 min after the end of exercise can be recommended to use in field conditions to estimate the work‐load in racehorses.  相似文献

Gymkhana is an equestrian event consisting of speed pattern racing and timed games for riders on horses. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of gymkhana competition on total cortisol and total and free iodothyronine changes in 23 Arabian purebred horses, by taking into account the effects of previous sport experience on gymkhana riding events. Compared with pre-competition values, an increase of total cortisol concentration has been observed in experienced horses at 30 minutes (P < .001) after exercise and in inexperienced horses both at 5 minutes (P < .05) and at 30 minutes (P < .01) after exercise. Compared with pre-competition values, an increase of total triiodothyronine (T3) concentration has been observed in experienced horses at 5 minutes (P < .05) after exercise. Data obtained showed that gymkhana riding events induced differential adrenocortical and thyroid responsiveness according to previous experience of sport horses. Hence, cortisol and iodothyronine patterns may provide additional information for the monitoring of gymkhana riding performance.  相似文献

Endurance racing is one long-distance event among the equine sporting activities associated with severe injuries and metabolic derangements that impede the health status of horses participating in the event. Therefore, this study evaluated the physical parameters and risk factors associated with the elimination of Arabian and crossed Arabian endurance horses during a 120-km race. Fifty-three Arabian and crossed Arabian endurance horses aged 6 to 15 years old participated in an endurance race of 120 km. All the horses were examined and found fit according to Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) regulations. After the endurance race 14 Arabian endurance horses completed the race successfully while 31 Arabian and crossed Arabian were eliminated. Their speed and heart rates were significantly higher (P < .0001). There were significant differences in skin recoil (P < .0395), color of mucous membrane (P < .0189), intestinal motility (P < .0124), and capillary refill time (P < .0082). There also were significant differences in age (P < .0018), breed (P < .0119), and equine establishments (P < .0205) among the eliminated horses and the Arabian and crossed Arabian endurance horses that successfully completed the race. In conclusion, the physical parameters and risk factors were significantly associated with the elimination of Arabian and crossed Arabian endurance horses. Therefore, close monitoring of the physical parameters and risk factors are essential in order to improve the performance of Arabian and crossed Arabian horses, and further studies are required on other associated parameters.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: An increased susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections of the respiratory tract, which results in a loss of performance, has been reported in racehorses. Much research has focused on the influence of high-intensity exercise of a short duration on immune system function in horses, but scant attention has been given to prolonged endurance exercise as an immune modulator. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of an 80 km endurance race on the monocyte and neutrophil oxidative burst, serum cortisol, glutamine and plasma glucose concentrations in 8 endurance-trained horses (mean +/- s.d. age 9.4 +/- 2.2 years). METHODS: Blood samples were drawn from the horses prior to and following an 80 km ride. RESULTS: Mean time for completion of the 80 km race was 306 +/- 40 mins. Immediately post race mean serum cortisol concentration, blood monocyte and neutrophil counts were higher and blood lymphocyte counts and plasma glucose concentration were lower compared with prerace values (P < 0.05). Neutrophil and monocyte oxidative burst activity decreased following the race and had not regained prerace values after 3 days of rest (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The present study indicates that long duration exercise in horses has a negative impact on the function of the innate immune system that lasts several days post race. Precise mechanisms instigating the fall in innate immune system function are unclear and multifactorial, but may be attributed, at least in part, to a high serum cortisol response during very prolonged exercise. POTENTIAL CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A prolonged bout of exercise results in a long-term suppression of the innate immune system function in horses which may, in part, account for the observed increase of infectious episodes in horses during training.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to compare changes of blood parameters induced by the same work and performed in the same conditions in two racehorse breeds, Thoroughbred and Purebred Arabian. The effect of moderate-intensity exercise was studied in 20 stallions--ten Thoroughbreds, aged 2-3 years and the same number of Purebred Arabians, 3-4 years old. All the horses were administrated the same effort test consisting in 1200 m gallop at a speed typical of the daily training sessions. Three jugular venous blood samples were collected for each horse: at rest, just after the end of the gallop and after 30-minute rest. In the gathered blood, a hemoglobin (Hb) concentration was determined as well as plasma level of glucose (Glc), triacylglycerols (TG), glycerol, free fatty acids (FFA), total plasma proteins (TP) and the activity of creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). In the Arabian horses, an increase in levels of TP, glycerol, FFA and CK activity measured just after exercise was higher than that in Thoroughbreds. Similarly, after a 30-minute rest, a post-exercise rise of TP, AST, glycerol and FFA proved to be higher in the Arabian horses compared to that in the Thoroughbreds. Only TG plasma concentration measured 30 minutes following the effort was significantly lower in the Arabian horses than in Thoroughbreds. It can be concluded that the Thoroughbred horses adapted better to the effort test applied in this study as compared to the Purebred Arabian horses. The parameters related to lipid metabolism proved to be the most sensitive indicators of breed differences in relation to moderate-intensity exercise.  相似文献

Alterations of acid-base status, and fluid and electrolyte balance subsequent to exercise in Thoroughbred racehorses in North America have not been well-characterized. Des-cribed here are the results of an observational study conducted to characterize changes in fluid and electrolytes following strenuous exercise of 16 Thoroughbreds under routine training conditions. Changes following strenuous exercise were determined for the following variables: serum concentrations of sodium (Na), potassium (K), chloride (Cl) and protein; pH of blood; osmolality of plasma and urine; body weight; and, fractional urinary excretion (FE) of Na, K and Cl. The following changes occurred during exercise: increased concentration of Na in blood; increased FE of Na; decreased concentration of Cl in blood; decreased FE of Cl; increased urinary and plasmal osmolality; weight-loss; decreased pH of blood; and, increased concentration of lactic acid. The concurrent decreased concentration of chloride in plasma and acidemia in these horses differed from the hypochloremic, metabolic alkalosis previously described among endurance horses. Acidemia was attributed to production of lactic acid by anaerobic glycolysis.  相似文献

Influence of heat or cold stress in sedated animals is unclear and requires further investigations. The present study aimed to evaluate the season’s effects on some clinical, hematological parameters and blood cortisol level in sedated Arabian horses with xylazine. Therefore, seven Arabian horses were used to investigate heart and respiratory rates, and capillary refill time and serum cortisol level were recorded before (0) and at 5, 15, 60, and 180 minutes postsedation. Heparinized venous samples were collected before (0) and 3 hours postsedation for analysis of hematological analysis. Arterial blood samples were collected before and 1 hour postsedation for arterial blood gases and electrolytes analysis. Repeated analysis of variance was performed (P < .05). Significant decreases have been observed in heart and respiratory rates at 5, 15, and 60 minutes postsedation in summer and only at 5 minutes postsedation in winter. Arterial oxygen pressure and arterial carbon dioxide pressure showed a significant decrease and increase, respectively at 1 hour postsedation in summer and winter. The serum cortisol levels were significantly higher in summer than in winter at 5, 15, and 60 minutes postsedation. In summer, the postsedation concentrations of cortisol did not change significantly than its values before sedation. However, in winter, the cortisol concentration decreased significantly at 5, 15, and 60 minutes postsedation compared with their value before sedation. The present study suggests that these season’s effects on the sedated Arabian horses could take into consideration in xylazine-sedated Arabian horses.  相似文献

Changes in blood constituents accompanying exercise in polo horses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
There have been several studies of biochemical changes in horses doing intense exercise such as Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses and in horses performing exercise over a long period of time such as endurance horses and three-day eventing horses, but we are not aware of studies with polo horses. Blood samples were taken from 18 polo horses at rest, immediately after playing 2 chukkers of indoor polo, and after a 15 minute rest period. Each horse was studied at 2 different games. The blood samples were analyzed for lactic acid, protein, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, HCO-3, PCO2, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and pH. Samples taken immediately after playing polo had significant increases in lactic acid, protein, sodium, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and pH, and significant decreases in chloride, calcium, PCO2, and HCO-3. Pulse and respiration were significantly increased. After a 15 minute rest period, there was a significant decrease in potassium. The HCO-3 was lower immediately after playing, but was above the resting value after 15 minutes. It was concluded that the changes after exercise are similar in some aspects to those reported for horses performing intense exercise such as racehorses, and in some aspects to those reported for horses performing prolonged exercise such as three-day event horses and endurance horses. Horses playing indoor polo develop a high plasma lactic acid, but with alkalemia, and could be used as a model to study this condition.  相似文献

In mammals, corticosteroids overall play the greatest role in stimulation of leptin synthesis and release from the adipose tissue. Some studies have shown that changes in plasma leptin and cortisol concentrations in horses can occur independently of each other. The aim of our study on horses was to evaluate the effect of different ages on the glucocorticoid-dependent leptin release from isolated adipose tissue samples in primary culture. Subcutaneous adipose tissue samples were collected from 25 cold-blood horses aged 7 months to 11 years. Samples of adipose tissue were incubated (200 mg/mL) under control conditions (Dx0), or treated with one of two doses of dexamethasone (100 ng/mL—Dx100 and 1,000 ng/mL—Dx1000) for 12 hours. Histological examination was also conducted to obtain the mean number of adipocytes in the field of view. The medium leptin concentration was analyzed in relation to the number of adipocytes in the tissue samples. A significantly higher medium leptin concentration in Dx1000 than in Dx0 was observed only in tissue samples from foals (7–12 months of age, n = 6). Significant negative correlations were found between the age of horses and the difference in medium leptin levels Dx1000 − Dx0, as well as (Dx1000 − Dx0)/million adipocytes, and (Dx1000 − Dx100)/million adipocytes. The corticosteroids-induced secretion of leptin decreased with the age of horses.  相似文献

Both physical activity and stress result in an increase in plasma cortisol level. The measurement of cortisol in plasma requires taking blood samples, which is stressful itself. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of saliva sampling for the determination of cortisol concentrations, indicating the intensity of exercise in horses during race training. Twelve Thoroughbred horses aged 2-3 years were examined during their speed training sessions. The horses galloped on the 1,200-m sand track at a speed of 14.4-15.3 m/s. Three saliva samples and three blood samples were collected from each horse. Both types of samples were taken when the horse was at rest, immediately after returning from the track and 30 minutes after the end of exercise. Blood lactic acid (LA) concentration was determined using the enzymatic cuvette test. The concentrations of cortisol in saliva and plasma samples were measured by enzyme immunoassay methods. Statistically significant correlations were found between salivary cortisol level determined 30 minutes after the end of exercise and blood LA concentration obtained immediately after exercise (P = .003) and between salivary and plasma cortisol levels measured 30 minutes after the end of training session (P = .015). The measurement of cortisol concentration in saliva samples taken from race horses 30 minutes after the end of exercise can be recommended for use in practice under field conditions to estimate the level of relative intensity of exercise in race horses.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo determine normal resting values for cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in healthy Standardbred, Thoroughbred and Warmblood horses and investigate if racing has an influence on cTnI concentrations.BackgroundMeasuring cTnI concentrations in plasma is the gold standard for detecting myocardial injury in humans. Cardiac troponin I is highly conserved between species and has gained interest as a marker for cardiac injury in horses. Increased levels of cTnI have been reported in association with endurance and short-term strenuous exercise on a treadmill in horses. However, the effect of true racing conditions has not yet been reported.Animals, materials and methodsBlood samples for analysis of cTnI concentrations in plasma were collected from 67 Standardbred racehorses, 34 Thoroughbred racehorses and 35 Warmblood dressage horses at rest. Blood samples were also collected prior to and after racing in 22 Standardbred racehorses and 6 Thoroughbred racehorses.ResultsAll horses except one had resting plasma cTnI concentrations <0.022 μg/L. Mild increases in cTnI concentrations were seen in some horses 1–2 h after the race (1/17 Standardbreds and 2/6 Thoroughbreds) as well as 10–14 h after the race (4/21 Standardbreds and 1/6 Thoroughbreds).ConclusionsResting cTnI concentrations in horses are low but mildly elevated cTnI concentrations may be detected in some horses 1–14 h after racing. These findings could be of importance when evaluating horses with suspected cardiac disease that recently have performed hard exercise.  相似文献

旨在应用核磁共振(1H-NMR)技术研究蒙古马耐力训练前后血浆代谢组变化特征。本研究选取6匹去势蒙古马:年龄(5.33±0.82)岁、体高(136.83±0.75) cm、体长(143.33±2.58) cm、胸围(157.17±2.04) cm、管围(18.45±0.27) cm,进行15及30 km步法为快步的耐力运动训练,采集其训练前后共计24份血液样本。采用氢质子共振频率600.13 MHz的Bruker AV III核磁共振谱仪测定血浆代谢物谱图信息。通过R语言偏最小二乘判别(PLS-DA)程序包及SPSS 20.0软件一维方差分析检验,鉴别组间代谢模式及差异代谢标志物。结果表明,在蒙古马15和30 km两次运动前后血浆代谢物中共发现47种差异代谢物,其中15 km运动前后鉴定出21个差异代谢物,运动后发现乙醇、甘露糖下降,葡萄糖、乙酰乙酸、丙酮酸、乳酸、肌酐、甘油、缬氨酸、丙氨酸、亮氨酸、酪氨酸、苯丙氨酸、苏氨酸、异丁酸、蛋氨酸、2-羟基异丁酸、O-乙酰肉碱、3-羟基异丁酸、3-甲基-2-氧代戊酸、3-羟基异戊酸升高。30 km运动前后鉴定出10个差异代谢物,运动后发现乙醇、葡萄糖、赖氨酸、甘氨酸、脯氨酸、谷氨酰胺、τ-甲基组氨酸、缬氨酸下降,甲醇、肌酸升高。对15 与30 km运动后进行比较发现,丙氨酸、柠檬酸、乙酸、赖氨酸、丙二酸、丙酮、2-羟基异戊酸、2-羟基异丁酸、泛酸、甜菜碱、异丁酸下降,乳酸、二甲基砜、丙酮酸、N-苯乙酰甘氨酸、马尿酸盐、甲醇、3-羟基异戊酸升高。在蒙古马15和30 km两次运动前后血浆代谢物中共发现47种差异代谢物,且两次运动前后的差异代谢物类别存在明显不同。蒙古马30 km负荷以脂肪酸有氧代谢为主方式供能,而15 km负荷以糖酵解无氧代谢为主的方式供能,酮体代谢是能量供应模式转换的过渡性阶段。本研究结果为我国耐力型运动马的训练及选育工作提供了理论依据。  相似文献

The equine endurance race involves both aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms of the horse. The intense physical activity over an extended period often causes susceptible horses to develop metabolic signs or problems resulting in elimination from races. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a method for prediction and validation of a metabolic disorder index (MDI) to be used before endurance races. Three hundred seventy-five Arabian (n = 152) and Arabian cross (n = 223) endurance horses aged from 6 to 15 years and weighing between 350 and 450 kg were selected for the study in Malaysia. Blood samples were collected at pre- and post-race periods. The significant (P < .05) findings in horses with metabolic disorder were packed cell volume (0.50 ± 0.06 LL−1), creatine kinase (1,275.89 ± 121.45 UL−1), interleukin-6 (2.01 ± 0.89 ng/mL), decreased glutathione reductase (26.57 ± 3.95 ng/mL), and chloride (94.98 ± 8.12 mmol/L). A new method called MDI was developed as a predictor for horses with the potential to develop metabolic disorders in endurance races. The MDI indicated a higher value greater than 5.5 for those eliminated and lower value below 5.5 for those that completed the race successfully, this proved to be accurate in the prediction of metabolic disorder in endurance horses. The MDI is an innovative and simple method used as a prediction method that will assist the equine endurance society to reduce the rate of elimination and to safeguard against serious medical problems during endurance races in the tropics.  相似文献

Cosinor analysis was used to evaluate whether pituitary and adrenal hormones exhibit circadian rhythmicity in horses. The effect of season and animal age on their respective rhythms was also determined. In addition, the usefulness of evaluating cortisol rhythmicity for the diagnosis of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) was assessed. Serum cortisol concentrations (P < 0.01), but not plasma ACTH or α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), showed a significant circadian periodicity in horses. An effect of season on hormone concentration was observed with plasma ACTH and α-MSH concentration greater in the fall and cortisol concentration greater in the spring (P < 0.001). Age did not affect cortisol rhythm, but it did blunt the variation in cortisol concentration in horses, similar to what has been previously reported to occur in aged people and dogs. In addition, our results suggest that clinically and diagnostically normal, non–PPID-affected horses commonly have a loss of cortisol diurnal rhythm. Therefore, measurement of circadian rhythm is not an appropriate diagnostic test for PPID.  相似文献

Thoroughbred racehorses are produced by mating small numbers of Arabian stallions and native British mares, and have been improved by selection of horseracing performance for about 300 years. While these improvements led to good performance as racehorses, they exposed horses to numerous medical disorders, aggravated by extensive exercise. Fractures are frequent medical disorders in Thoroughbred racehorses. In this study, fracture heritability was estimated using 3,927 Japanese Thoroughbred racehorses to elucidate the risk of racehorse fractures. The heritability estimates of all examined fractures were low (h2 = 0.06), while those of fractures in carpal bone and carpus (carpal bone plus distal radius) were moderate (h2 = 0.37, 0.24, respectively). Fracture occurrence age for carpal bone and distal radius was both 3.3 years old and was younger than that for other fractures. These results indicated that a larger proportion of the variation in the studied population was due to genetic factors for carpal fractures than for other fractures, while the fractures at other bones were largely affected by environmental factors, correlated with the athlete period (number year in racing). These findings contribute to develop a management plan for suppressing racehorse fractures and improving horseracing safety.  相似文献

Background

Increased blood insulin levels are associated with an increased risk of pasture‐associated laminitis in equids.

Objective

To determine the relationship between plasma insulin, leptin, and lipid levels, and measures of oxidative stress with adiposity in mature light breed horses.

Animals

300 randomly selected light breed horses, aged 4–20 years.

Methods

A random sample of horses (140 mares, 151 geldings, and 9 stallions) was drawn from the VMRCVM Equine Field Service practice client list. Evaluations occurred June 15 – August 15, 2006, with all sampling performed between 0600 and 1200 hours. Concentrate feed was withheld for at least 10 hours before sampling. Plasma was analyzed for insulin, glucose, leptin, triglycerides, nonesterified fatty acids, and measures of oxidative stress. Body condition score was determined as the average of 2 independent investigators.

Results

Overconditioned and obese horses had higher plasma insulin (< .001) and leptin (< .01) levels than optimally conditioned horses. Obese horses had higher triglyceride levels (= .006) and lower red blood cell gluthathione peroxidase activities (= .001) than optimally conditioned horses.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Maintaining horses at a BCS <7 might be important for decreasing the risk of pasture‐associated laminitis.  相似文献

This study examined the influence of sex steroid hormones on lipid metabolism in horses. The group of 34 clinically healthy Standardbred trotters aged 2 to 4 years was studied during an exercise test. The horses were divided into groups according to their sex. These groups were: 11 stallions, 16 mares, and seven geldings. Concentrations of testosterone, 17-β-estradiol, leptin, ghrelin, glycerol, free fatty acids (FFA), and triacylglycerols (TG) were measured in plasma obtained from blood samples taken at rest and after the end of the exercise. At rest, plasma ghrelin concentration was significantly higher in geldings than in stallions and mares (1,541 ± 206 vs 1,280 ± 288 and 1,310 ± 267 pg/mL, respectively; P = .012). Leptin was lower in geldings than in mares (2.65 ± 0.93 vs 4.70 ± 2.31 ng/mL; P = .036). The post-exercise rise in plasma ghrelin and TG concentrations was significantly higher in mares than in geldings (+220 ± 330 vs -25 ± 206 pg/mL; P = .049 and 0.31 ± 0.14 vs 0.13 ± 0.15 mmol/L; P = .016, respectively). The increase in plasma FFA level was higher in geldings than in stallions (535 ± 178 vs 334 ± 191 μmol/L, P = .046). In conclusion, lipolysis rate in geldings is higher than in noncastrated trotters.  相似文献

Because exercise fatigue has been associated with the accumulation of lactic acid, factors that influence lactate metabolism during exercise can potentially enhance performance. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of supplemental betaine on eight mature Thoroughbred horses before and after 8 wk of conditioning. The effects of betaine were tested in two cross-over design experiments, allowing each horse to receive both the control and betaine treatments at each fitness level. Ingestion of 80 mg of betaine/kg of BW for 14 d before exercise testing did not alter plasma lactate, glucose, free fatty acids (FFA), or triglyceride concentrations during exercise in the untrained or trained horses. A time x treatment interaction (P < .05) was observed for plasma lactate in untrained horses during recovery from exercise, and plasma lactate concentrations were lower (P < .05) at 60 min after exercise when untrained horses received betaine. Plasma FFA concentrations were lower (P < .05) before exercise and at 720 min after exercise when untrained horses received betaine. These data indicate that betaine may influence lactate metabolism following exercise in untrained horses; however, betaine does not seem beneficial for trained horses.  相似文献

The effect of dynamic exercise on complete blood cell count, lymphocyte β-adrenergic receptor and plasma catecholamine (adrenaline and noradrenaline) levels in horses performing different disciplines were investigated during rest and after exercise. Blood samples were collected from jumping horses (n=6), Arabian Endurance horses (n=6) and Standardbred trotters (n=6) before and immediately after competition. Dynamic exercise caused a significant increase in red blood cell count (Standardbred trotters: P=0.0012), haemoglobin concentration (jumping horses: P=0.001; Standardbred trotters: P=0.01), haematocrit percentage (Standardbred trotters: P=0.005), neutrophil percentage (jumping horses: P=0.0003), lymphocyte percentage (jumping horses: P=0.0003), monocyte percentage (Standardbred trotters: P=0.0008), lymphocyte β-AR numbers (jumping horses: P=0.01; Arabian Endurance horses: P=0.016; Standardbred trotters: P=0.05), plasma adrenaline concentration (Standardbred trotters: P=0.0001) and plasma noradrenaline levels (Standardbred trotters: P=0.003). It is concluded that acute increases in plasma catecholamine concentrations depended on the exercise performed and may induce up-regulation of β-AR in equine lymphocytes. However, the exact mechanism of β-AR up-regulation still remains unclear.  相似文献

Daily fluctuations of cortisol concentration in the blood or saliva have been repeatedly reported. However, several contradictions in the existing literature appear on this subject. The present study was performed to definitively establish options for testing adrenocortical function. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate parallel circadian rhythms in salivary and serum cortisol concentrations during a 24-h period. Twenty horses were examined under the same conditions. Blood and saliva samples were taken every 2 h for 24 h to determine the daily changes in cortisol concentrations of saliva and serum at rest and to determine the relationship between salivary and serum cortisol levels. Cosinor analysis of group mean data confirmed a significant circadian component for both serum and salivary cortisol concentrations (P < 0.001 in both cases). The serum cortisol circadian rhythm had an acrophase at 10:50 AM (95% CI, 10:00 AM–11:40 AM), a MESOR of 22.67 ng/mL, and an amplitude of 11.93 ng/mL. The salivary cortisol circadian rhythm had an acrophase at 10:00 AM (95% CI, 9:00 AM–11:00 AM), a MESOR of 0.52 ng/mL, and an amplitude of 0.12 ng/mL. We found a significant but weak association between salivary and serum cortisol concentrations; the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.32 (P < 0.001). The use of salivary cortisol level as an indicator of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity may be warranted. However, the salivary cortisol levels are more likely to be correlated with free plasma cortisol than with the total plasma cortisol concentration.  相似文献
