Low concentrations of zearalenone in diets of mature gilts   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Four groups of sixteen gilts were each individually fed diets containing 0, 3, 6 or 9 ppm pure zearalenone starting the day after they exhibited puberal estrus. They were artificially inseminated twice at subsequent heat periods. Fifteen of the 30 gilts not exhibiting estrus within 80 d of the start of the experiment were slaughtered and their reproductive tracts examined. The remaining 15 gilts that did not return to estrus were fed the control diet after 80 d to determine the effect on return to estrus. Eighty-eight percent of the gilts fed 6 or 9 ppm zearalenone became pseudopregnant as confirmed by plasma progesterone levels and(or) examination of their reproductive tracts. However, three animals fed the two higher levels of zearalenone conceived and farrowed. No conclusions can be made regarding the effect of zearalenone on litter size due to the relatively few numbers of gilts fed the higher levels of zearalenone that farrowed. Gilts fed diets containing 6 or 9 ppm zearalenone returned to estrus spontaneously (n = 7) or following injection of cloprostenol (n = 8) approximately 45 d after the removal of zearalenone from their diet.  相似文献

At an average age of 70 d, 60 Yorkshire gilts born either in July (Trial 1; n = 30) or August (Trial 2; n = 30) received a diet containing zearalenone for 0 (control), 45 or 90 d. The concentration of zearalenone in diets was 2 ppm for 2 wk and 1.5 ppm for the remainder of the study. Vulval swelling and reddening was evident within 7 d after zearalenone was first fed. Zearalenone consumption had no effect on BW or backfat depth. Puberty occurred in Trial 1 at 219 +/- 6 d and was not influenced by zearalenone. Gilts in Trial 2 were divided into two groups; blood samples were taken from 12 gilts to assess pulsatile LH patterns and LH response to estradiol benzoate (EB) and 18 were handled similarly to those in Trial 1. Of this latter subgroup, age at puberty was younger (P less than .05) with zearalenone (217 +/- 7.0, 193 +/- 9.1 and 185.6 +/- 8.2 d for 0-, 45-, and 90-d treatments). Prepubertal consumption of zearalenone did not affect conception rates, ovulation rates, number of fetuses or percentage of embryo survival following mating at pubertal estrus. Two days before the 90-d experimental period ended for Trial 2, blood samples were taken from 12 gilts (four/treatment) every 15 min for 4 h prior to injection of EB (10 micrograms/kg) and every 6 h for 108 h after EB. Forty-eight prepubertal gilts (178.7 +/- 4.1 d; 94.2 +/- 4.1 kg), 16 in each of three trials, were assigned randomly to receive 0 (C) or 10 ppm zearalenone (Z) daily in 2.5 kg of a 14% protein finishing ration for 2 wk. Blood samples were collected at 20-min intervals for 4 h 1 wk after the start of the experiment and 1 wk after Z was withdrawn. Two weeks after Z was withdrawn, gilts were exposed to mature boars 15 min per day for 3 wk. Gilts in estrus were mated to two different boars 12 h apart. Twice each week, blood was sampled and analyzed for progesterone to establish age of puberty. Age at puberty differed (P = .008) among replicates but was similar (P = .13) between Z and C gilts within each replicate. Mean serum concentrations of LH were suppressed (P = .025) during consumption of Z (.25 vs .42 ng/ml) but were similar (P = .16) to concentrations in C gilts 1 wk after Z was withdrawn (.35 vs .45 ng/ml). Frequency and amplitude of LH secretory spikes did not differ (P greater than .50) between Z and C gilts during either sampling period. Mean serum concentrations of FSH were similar (P = .25) between Z and C gilts. Number of corpora lutea and live fetuses were similar (P = .29 and P = .94, respectively) between Z and C gilts. In an attempt to improve the reproductive performance of gilts mated at puberty, 70 Yorkshire x Landrace gilts were allocated at 120 d of age and 60 kg body weight to one of two treatments. Restricted gilts were fed 2.0 kg d-1 of a diet formulated to provide 18% crude protein and 14.5 MJ DE kg-1 from selection until mated at their first estrus (n = 35). Flushed gilts were fed 2.0 kg d-1 of the same diet from 120 to 150 d of age, but then had their feed intake increased to 3.5 kg d-1 until mated at their first estrus (n = 35). An additional group of gilts (control fed; n = 33) were fed 3.0 kg d-1 from selection until they were bred at their third estrus in order to investigate the influence of feed restriction on the onset of puberty. During gestation all gilts were fed 1.8 to 2.2 kg d-1 of a 16.8% crude protein diet having 13.7 MJ DE kg-1. Control fed gilts were younger (p less than 0.05) at puberty (150 d) than restricted (165 d) or flushed gilts (165 d). There was no difference in subsequent litter size between the restricted and flushed gilts (7.7 and 8.0, respectively). It is concluded that the institution of a flushing nutritional regime in the prepubertal period will not enhance piglet production from gilts mated at puberty.  相似文献

Effects of feeding zearalenone to sows on rebreeding and pregnancy   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Two trials were conducted with a total of 91 lactating sows fed 0, 5 or 10 ppm dietary zearalenone (Z) and 0 or 15% dietary alfalfa in a factorial arrangement to evaluate their influence on reproductive performance to 40 d postbreeding. Feeding of Z did not alter the proportion of sows returning to estrus; however, the weaning-to-estrus interval increased when increased dietary Z was fed in Trial 2, with a similar trend at the highest level in Trial 1. The average number of fetuses per sow with fetuses tended to decrease (P less than .05) with increasing dietary Z in Trial 2, but not in Trial 1. Embryonic mortality did not appear to increase when the ratio of fetuses to corpora lutea was compared in sows with fetuses in Trial 1, but it did increase in Trial 2. The trend to increased numbers of bred sows that were non-pregnant at slaughter when dietary Z increased in Trial 1 was not observed in Trial 2. Dietary dehydrated alfalfa meal did not appear to modify the effects of Z in these trials.  相似文献

The effect of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) or estradiol cyclopentylpropionate (EC) on the induction of estrus, duration of estrus, and serum progesterone concentration after estrus was evaluated in 8 gilts with delayed puberty. Four gilts were given 500 IU of PMSG IM and 4 were given 2 mg of EC, IM. The inactive status of the ovaries at the time of treatment was verified by serum progesterone values of less than 0.5 ng/ml in serial samples collected before treatment. The 4 EC-treated gilts came into estrus at a mean of 3.5 days after treatment, but 1 of the gilts did not form corpora lutea. Three PMSG-treated gilts came into estrus at a mean of 4.0 days after treatment. The remaining PMSG-treated gilt remained anestrus and did not form corpora lutea. The mean duration of estrus in EC-treated gilts was 5.25 days compared with 2.0 days for PMSG-treated gilts (P less than 0.05). Serum progesterone concentrations were higher in PMSG-treated gilts than in EC-treated gilts at 8, 11, and 17 days after treatment (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

Moldy corn in diets of gestating and lactating swine   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Moldy corn was substituted for normal corn in four dietary treatments to provide 0, 2.1, 3.7 and 4.8 ppm of zearalenone. The diets were fed to gilts from the day after first observed estrus through two gestation-lactation periods. Each diets was fed to 11 gifts initially. Overall reproductive performance appeared to decrease as the level of moldly corn in the diet increased, with fewer sows completing two parities and fewer piglets weaned per litter, especially from sows fed the highest level of moldy corn. Three-week-old gilts that nursed sows fed the highest level of moldy corn had increased weight of reproductive tracts. In 35-d-old gilts, symptoms of estrogenism increased as the level of moldy corn in the diet increased, even though there were no symptoms of estrogenism in the mature gilts or sows fed the same diets. Neither zearalenone nor its metabolites (alpha- and beta-zearalenol) were detected in milk obtained 1 or 14 d postpartum.  相似文献

Fifty crossbred gilts immunized against bovine serum albumin (BSA) or androstenedione conjugated to BSA (AD) were used in three experiments. Primary immunizations were given at 120 d of age and boosters at 148 and 176 d. Gilts were moved to pens containing four to five animals each and exposed to boars beginning at 180 d of age. Immunization against AD did not affect age at puberty, percentage of gilts exhibiting estrus or duration of first estrous cycle. Over the three experiments, ovulation rate was 24% greater for AD-immunized gilts than for controls, and the number of corpora lutea was related positively (r = .82) to the log of the antibody titer. Number of ovulations decreased as interval from booster immunization to onset of estrus increased. During diestrus of the first estrous cycle, gilts immunized against AD had more follicles 5 to 10 mm in diameter, more total ovarian follicles and more total ovarian structures (corpora lutea plus follicles) than controls. Immunization against AD increased the frequency of LH pulses on d 16 but not on d 17 or 18, of the estrous cycle. However, average serum concentrations of LH, FSH and estradiol from 5 d before until 2 d after expected estrus were not different between treatment groups. Concentrations of AD in follicles 4 to 6 and greater than 7 mm in diameter were greater in gilts immunized against AD. Mean serum progesterone was higher on d 9 and 12 after mating in AD immunized gilts than in controls. Immunization against AD had no effect on maintenance of pregnancy or embryo survival rate.  相似文献

Purified zearalenone (Z) was added to the diet of gilts from d 2 to 15 postmating. Gilts received either 0, 5, 15, 30, 60 or 90 ppm Z (three to five gilts per dose) in 1.8 kg of feed daily. Serum concentrations of progesterone and estradiol-17 beta were determined weekly. On d 13 to 15 and 40 to 43 postmating, blood samples were drawn from a cannula at 20 min intervals for 4 h and analyzed for luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin (PRL). Gilts were killed 40 to 43 d postmating and embryonic development was assessed. Treatment with 5, 15 or 30 ppm Z had no effect on embryonic development when compared with 0 ppm. No fetuses were present in gilts fed 60 to 90 ppm Z, but two gilts given 60 ppm Z had remnants of fetal membranes in the uterus. The histologic appearance of reproductive tract tissues from the gilts given 60 ppm Z was similar to that from pregnant gilts. Tissues from gilts given 90 ppm Z appeared to be stimulated by both estrogen and progesterone. Serum concentrations of progesterone were decreased at 2, 3 and 6 wk postbreeding in gilts fed 60 and 90 ppm Z. Boar exposure has been used for estrus induction of prepubertal gilts, but has limited effect on estrus synchronization within 7 d of introduction. In contrast, PG600 (400 IU of PMSG and 200 IU of hCG; Intervet, Millsboro, DE) is effective for induction of synchronized estrus, but the response is often variable. It is unknown whether boar exposure before PG600 administration might improve the efficiency of estrus induction of prepubertal gilts. In Exp. 1, physical or fence-line boar contact for 19 d was evaluated for inducing puberty in gilts before administration of i.m. PG600. Exp. 2 investigated whether 4-d boar exposure and gilt age influenced response to PG600. In Exp. 1, 150-d-old prepubertal gilts were randomly allotted to receive fence-line (n = 27, FBE) or physical (n = 29, PBE) boar exposure. Gilts were provided exposure to a mature boar for 30 min daily. All gilts received PG600 at 169 d of age. Estrous detection continued for 20 d after injection. In Exp. 2, prepubertal gilts were allotted by age group (160 or 180 d) to receive no boar exposure (NBE) or 4 d of fence-line boar exposure (BE) for 30 min daily before receiving PG600 either i.m. or s.c. Following PG600 administration, detection for estrus occurred twice-daily using fence-line boar exposure for 7 d. Results of Exp. 1 indicated no differences between FBE and PBE on estrus (77%), age at puberty (170 d), interval from PG600 to estrus (4 d), gilts ovulating (67%), or ovulation rate (12 corpora lutea, CL). Results from Exp. 2 indicated no effect of age group on estrus (55%) and days from PG600 to estrus (4 d). A greater (P < 0.05) proportion of BE gilts expressed estrus (65 vs. 47%), had a shorter (P < 0.05) interval from PG600 to estrus (3.6 vs. 4.3 d), and had decreased (P < 0.05) age at estrus (174 vs. 189 d) compared with NBE. Ovulation rate was greater (P < 0.05) in the BE group for the 180-d-old gilts (12.7 vs. 11.9 CL) compared with the NBE group. However, age group had no effect on ovulation (77%) or ovulation rate (12 CL). Collectively, these results indicate that physical boar contact may not be necessary when used in conjunction with PG600 to induce early puberty. The administration of PG600 to 180-d-old gilts in conjunction with 4 d prior fence-line boar exposure may improve induction of estrus, ovulation, and decrease age at puberty.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of number of conceptuses on maternal concentrations and profiles of estrogen sulfate, estrone, estradiol-17 beta, progesterone and prolactin in gilts. Estradiol-valerate injections were used to induce pseudopregnancy (O conceptuses; n = 5) and oviduct ligation or no treatment were utilized to obtain pregnant gilts with 4 to 7 (n = 4), or 8 to 11 (n = 4) conceptuses, respectively. Blood samples were collected every 10 d from d 10 through 110 of pregnancy or pseudopregnancy. At 110 d after onset of estrus, all gilts were slaughtered and numbers and(or) weights of fetuses, corpora lutea, placentae and the empty uterus were determined. Concentrations of estrogen sulfate and estrone, but not progesterone or prolactin, were associated with fetal number, total fetal weight, total placental weight or empty uterine weight. In contrast, only progesterone was highly correlated with number of corpora lutea. Results suggest that most conjugated estrogen, estrone and estradiol were of fetal-placental origin, whereas little, if any, placental production of progesterone or prolactin occurred. Increases in estrogen sulfate and estrone concentrations were observed at gestation d 30 and from d 70 to 100. The latter increase coincides with previously established increases in the rate of maternal mammary development and fetal growth.  相似文献

Characterization of effects of zearalenone in swine during early pregnancy   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Mature gilts (n = 16) were hand mated and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups of 4 gilts each. Treated gilts had 108 mg of purified zearalenone added to their diet on postmating days (PMD) 2 to 6, 7 to 10, or 11 to 15. Control gilts were given the same diet without added zearalenone. On PMD 6, 10, and 15, control gilts had venous cannulas placed in the jugular vein, and blood samples were taken at 20-minute intervals for 4 hours before feeding and 4 hours after feeding. Samples were collected from treated gilts on the last day that zearalenone was consumed. Samples were analyzed for follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and prolactin. Single blood samples were taken by venipuncture on PMD 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28 and at euthanasia and were analyzed for serum concentration of progesterone and estradiol-17 beta. All gilts were euthanatized 30 to 32 days after mating, and fetal development was assessed. Three gilts that were given zearalenone on PMD 7 to 10 were not pregnant and had regressing corpora lutea on the ovaries at euthanasia. All other treated and control gilts were pregnant. Serum samples from treated gilts on PMD 10 and 15 had lower mean prolactin concentrations than did those from controls. The number of LH spikes were fewer (P less than 0.05) in gilts that were given zearalenone on PMD 15 compared with those in controls on PMD 15. Eighty crossbred gilts were assigned randomly to treatments: 1) removal of an ovary and ipsilateral uterine horn (UHO) at 130 d of age and removal of the remaining ovary and uterine horn 12 d post-puberty; 2) UHO at 130 d of age, mated and reproductive tracts recovered when slaughtered at 30 d of gestation; 3) UHO 12 d post-puberty, mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation and 4) unoperated controls that were mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation. Age of puberty was not affected by treatments. Gilts in treatment 1 had a mean ovulation rate at the pubertal estrus comparable to gilts in treatment 3. But, gilts in treatments 2 and 3 had 16% fewer (P less than .01) corpora lutea at 30 d of gestation than control gilts. Length and weight of the remaining uterine horn at 12 d post-puberty for gilts treated at 130 d of age were similar to the averages of gilts left intact. Gilts with one uterine horn had 2.2 fewer live embryos at 30 d of gestation than control gilts (P less than .01). But, the proportion of corpora lutea represented by live embryos did not differ significantly among treatments. Gilts with one uterine horn had 1.1 fewer live embryos (P less than .15) after adjustment for number of corpora lutea, less uterine space occupied by each embryo (P less than .01) and less total placental membrane per embryo (P less than .05) than control gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Previous comparisons between the cDNA and gene sequences for secreted folate binding protein (sFBP) indicated a 12-bp insertion/deletion (ins/del) polymorphism in exon 1 and a SNP that altered (Ser-Arg) the protein AA sequence. The effect of the Ser-Arg SNP on reproductive traits was examined in three groups of Meishan-White European breed crossbred gilts. The gilts for all three groups were unilaterally hysterectomized-ovariectomized (UHO) at 100 d of age. Group 1 gilts (n = 77) were mated at estrus, slaughtered at d 105 of pregnancy, and a blood sample was collected from each fetus to determine fetal hematocrit. The number of corpora lutea and fetuses and the fetal and placental weights were recorded. Group 2 gilts (n = 46) were mated, the remaining uterine horn was flushed with 20 mL of saline on d 11 of pregnancy, conceptuses were counted, and flushings were measured for total sFBP. Gilts were allowed an estrous cycle to recover, mated again at estrus, slaughtered at 105 d of gestation, and the data as described for Group 1 were collected. Groups 1 and 2 gilts were genotyped for the Ser-Arg SNP. In Group 3, gilts (n = 70) and boars (n = 30) were genotyped for the Ser-Arg SNP before mating, and like genotypes were mated. Gilts were then treated as described for Group 2. The effect of the 12-bp ins/del on reproductive traits was examined in 407 white crossbred UHO gilts from a randomly selected control line and from lines selected for ovulation rate (OR) and uterine capacity (UC). Gilts were mated and slaughtered at 105 d of age, and the numbers of corpora lutea and live fetuses, and fetal and placental weights and fetal hematocrits were recorded. The 12-bp ins/del also was evaluated in 131 intact gilts from the OR selected line. These gilts were mated at approximately 250 d of age and farrowed. The numbers of fully formed and live piglets were recorded. A significant effect (P < 0.05) of the Ser-Arg SNP was detected on the number of embryos present on d 11 of pregnancy and on UC. The sFBP 12-bp ins/del was associated with UC (P < 0.01) and the number of CL (P < 0.05) in UHO gilts, but not with litter size in intact gilts from the OR line. Results suggest that the 12-bp ins/del polymorphism could be exploited to increase litter size in swine, provided that the negative effect of the polymorphism on OR is overcome.  相似文献

The effect of prepubertal feed level on growth and reproductive development of gilts was investigated. At 13 wk. of age, white crossbred gilts were penned individually and assigned to the following treatments: Ad lib, ad libitum intake from 13 to 25 wk. of age (n = 64); Control, ad libitum intake from 13 wk. of age until 100 kg BW and then 90% of ad libitum intake until 25 wk. of age (n = 65); and Restricted, 74% of ad libitum intake from 13 wk. to 25 wk. of age (n = 64). Feed was formulated to primarily restrict energy intake. The study was replicated in two seasons. At 25 wk. of age, gilts were moved to group pens, approximately 16 gilts/pen, allowed ad libitum access to feed, and estrus detection was initiated. Gilts were mated at first estrus and those recycling were remated. After mating, gilts were moved to gestation stalls and fed 1.5x maintenance. At 30 d of gestation, reproductive tracts were harvested, and numbers of corpora lutea (CL) and live embryos were recorded. From 13 to 25 wk. of age, feed consumption was 258 for Ad lib, 251 for Control, and 189 kg/gilt for Restricted, and, from 13 wk. of age until 30 d of gestation, total feed consumption was 367 for Ad lib, 356 for Control, and 299 kg/gilt for Restricted gilts. Age at puberty (196 d) and pregnancy (200 d) was not affected (P>.18) by treatment. However, the rate at which gilts attained puberty (e.g., percentage pubertal at 28 d) was greatest in Ad lib (75) and least in Control (61) gilts. Number of CL and live embryos at 30 d of gestation/gilt assigned to the study was unaffected (P>.21) by treatment. Quantity of feed consumed from 13 wk. of age to 30 d of gestation per live embryo in gilts assigned to the study was 40.0 for Ad lib, 39.8 for Control, and 30.6 kg/gilt for Restricted gilts. These results indicate that moderate feed restriction of gilts during prepubertal development may increase efficiency of swine production without negative impact on reproductive performance through 30 d of gestation.  相似文献

Treatment of pigs with porcine ST (pST) in early to mid-pregnancy increases body weight and length of their fetuses by mid-pregnancy, but this increased weight may not persist to birth. We investigated the effects of short- (25 d) and long-term (75 d) treatment with pST, and interactions between long-term pST treatment and crude protein content of diet, in restricted-fed gilts. In both experiments, Large White x Landrace gilts were bred at first estrus to Large White x Duroc boars and allowed to farrow naturally. In the first experiment, gilts were fed 1.8 kg/d of a diet containing 13.5 MJ DE/kg of DM and 15.05% CP (as-fed basis) throughout pregnancy, and were injected daily with 0, 2, or 4 mg pST from d 25 to 50 of pregnancy. Maternal treatment with pST from d 25 to 50 of pregnancy did not affect the number of piglets born per litter or progeny size at birth. In the second experiment, gilts were injected daily with 0 or 2 mg of pST and fed 2.2 kg/d of a diet containing 14.5 MJ DE/kg and either (as-fed basis) 16.6% (0.81% lysine) or 22.2% CP (1.16% lysine) from d 25 to 100 of pregnancy. All gilts were then fed 3.0 kg/d of the lower protein diet from d 100 of pregnancy to farrowing. Treatment with 2 mg pST/d from d 25 to 100 of pregnancy increased live weight of all gilts during the treatment period (P = 0.016), but the change in maternal live weight from d 25 to 100 of pregnancy was only increased (P = 0.001) by pST in gilts fed the higher protein diet. Live weight of gilts 1 d after farrowing was increased by pST treatment (P = 0.007), but was not altered by protein content of diet during pregnancy. In gilts fed the lower protein diet, but not in those fed the higher protein diet, pST treatment decreased maternal backfat depth during treatment (P < 0.020) and 1 d after farrowing (P = 0.002). Treatment with pST during pregnancy did not affect the number of piglets born per litter but independently increased body weight by 11.6% (P < 0.001) and length by 3.4% (P = 0.005) of progeny at birth and decreased (P < 0.01) the negative effect of litter size on body weight at birth. We conclude that in feed-restricted gilts, fetal weight gains in response to 25 d of pST treatment before mid-pregnancy are not maintained to term but that treatment with pST during most of pregnancy increases progeny size at birth and reduces maternal constraint of fetal growth.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine long-term effects of dietary boron (B) on reproductive and bone characteristics in gilts. Weanling gilts (n = 50) were allotted to 10 pens based on weaning weight and litter origin. Pens were randomly assigned to receive one of two dietary treatments that consisted of a basal diet low in B (control) and the basal diet supplemented with 5 mg of B/kg diet as sodium borate. Gilts remained on their respective experimental diets throughout the nursery phase, growing-finishing phase, sexual maturity, breeding, gestation, and lactation. The day of first observed standing estrus was defined as puberty, and each pubertal gilt was bred via AI at the second observed standing estrus. Eight randomly selected gilts per treatment were slaughtered at d 35 of gestation for the assessment of embryonic and reproductive characteristics, bone characteristics, and tissue B concentrations. The remaining pregnant gilts (control, n = 11; 5 mg supplemental B/kg diet, n = 10) farrowed, and litter characteristics at farrowing and weaning were determined. Age at puberty was not affected (P = 0.72) by B, and neither were the number of corpora lutea on the ovaries (P = 0.44) or the total number of embryos (P = 0.95) at d 35 of gestation. Boron supplementation increased (P = 0.05) pig weaning weight and tended (P = 0.11) to increase pig birth weight; however, no other litter characteristics were affected (P > 0.12) by B. Extrinsic and intrinsic strength measures of bone were increased (P < 0.09) by B. Fat-free bone ash percentage and bone mineral concentrations were not affected (P > or = 0.19) by dietary B. Supplemental B increased (P < or = 0.06) the B concentrations of the muscle, liver, and reproductive tissues. Serum osteocalcin concentrations tended (P = 0.13) to be increased by dietary B, which may be related to increased bone turnover in B-supplemented gilts. Results indicate that B may have beneficial effects upon reproductive and bone characteristics.  相似文献

Gilts (n = 267) were allotted to flushing (1.55 kg/d additional grain sorghum), altrenogest (15 mg.gilt-1.d-1) and control treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Altrenogest was fed for 14 d. Flushing began on d 9 of the altrenogest treatment and continued until first observed estrus; 209 gilts (78%) were detected in estrus. The interval from the last day of altrenogest feeding to estrus was shorter (P less than .05) with the altrenogest + flushing treatment (6.6 +/- .2 d) than with flushing alone (7.6 + .3 d). Ovulation rates (no. of corpora lutea) were higher (P less than .05) in all flushed gilts (14.5 +/- .4 vs 13.4 +/- .4), whether or not they received altrenogest. Flushing also increased the total number of pigs farrowed (.9 pigs/litter; P = .06) and total litter weight (1.43 kg/litter; P = .01), independent of altrenogest treatment. Number of pigs born alive and weight of live pigs were higher for gilts treated with altrenogest + flushing and inseminated at their pubertal estrus than for gilts in all other treatment combinations. In contrast, gilts receiving only altrenogest had greater live litter weight and more live pigs born when inseminated at a postpubertal estrus than when inseminated at pubertal estrus. We conclude that flushing increased litter size and litter weight, particularly for gilts that were inseminated at their pubertal estrus. Increased litter size resulted from increased ovulation rates, which, in nonflushed gilts, limited litter size at first farrowing.  相似文献

Selection for increased number of corpora lutea in gilts is associated with increased plasma FSH concentrations during pubertal development. In the current study, 270 gilts from a control (CO) line and a line selected for increased ovulation rate (OR) were unilaterally ovariectomized at 85 d of age, and this ovarian weight was related to FSH concentrations at 65, 75, and 85 d of age. Gilts were produced during two farrowing seasons, spring and fall, and the age at first estrus was monitored from 160 to 250 d. Plasma FSH was greater in OR than in CO gilts at 65 (P < 0.01) and 75 d (difference in spring greater than in fall, P < 0.01), but FSH at these ages was not correlated with ovarian weight at 85 d. At 85 d, FSH did not differ in gilts of these lines; however, FSH was negatively correlated (r = -0.27, P < 0.01) with ovarian weight. The proportion of gilts detected in estrus was less for spring-born CO gilts than for spring-born OR or for fall-born CO and OR gilts (78 vs. 92%, season x line, P < 0.02). The age at first estrus was similar in the two lines but was earlier (P < 0.01) for spring-born than for fall-born gilts (194 vs. 204 d). Concentrations of FSH at each of the ages examined were not correlated with the age at first estrus. These observations support the conclusion that selection for a greater number of corpora lutea produces a correlated increase in plasma FSH during early pubertal development. This increase in FSH most likely reflects differences in FSH synthesis and release and not differences in the stage of pubertal development.  相似文献
