Breeding beef heifers for the first time at 15 months of age has potential to increase the efficiency of the beef breeding-cow herd. An increased incidence of dystocia in heifers calving at 2 years of age, compared to mature cows, is a major reason many farmers in New Zealand have not adopted the practice. The predominant type of dystocia affecting 2-year-old heifers is feto-maternal disproportion, a condition in which the fetus is too large relative to the size of the heifer's pelvis. Reducing birthweight of the calf is a means of reducing the incidence of dystocia. Birthweight and length of gestation are determined by genotype of the calf, maternal genetic effects and environmental effects. Bulls with low estimated breeding values for birthweight have been selected for mating heifers; however, the positive genetic correlation between birthweight and mature weight meant that the progeny of these bulls tended to be lighter at finishing, making them less desirable in the beef industry. The genotype of the dam also plays a role in determining the risk of dystocia; the maternal ability of the dam to nurture the fetus influences birthweight, and the dam's genetic potential for growth influences the size of her pelvic area. Heavy heifers tend to produce high birthweight calves, counteracting the reduction in the incidence of dystocia resulting from the larger pelvis in larger heifers. Manipulating feeding level during pregnancy offers an alternative method for manipulating the birthweight of calves. Little is known about the effects of nutrition in early gestation on placental development or birthweight of calves. No differences in the birthweight of calves have been observed in response to variation in feeding in mid-pregnancy, and variable responses in birthweight and the incidence of dystocia to feeding in the third trimester of pregnancy have been reported. Differences in birthweight have not always resulted in differences in the incidence of dystocia, primarily due to differences in liveweight of the heifer also induced by feeding regimens. Variability in the incidence of dystocia in response to feeding level in the third trimester of pregnancy makes it difficult to make recommendations for the feeding of heifers at this stage of gestation. More research is needed into the effects of nutrition in early gestation on fetal and placental development in cattle.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the consequences of attempting to control dystocia in Hereford heifers by restricting nutrition during late pregnancy. Nutritional level was controlled by varying feedlot rations in experiment 1 and by varying pasture availability in experiment 2. In neither experiment was the incidence of dystocia or stillbirths significantly affected by level of nutrition during late pregnancy. Calf birthweight was reduced and dam pelvic growth was retarded when the feed intake of heifers was restricted prior to calving. Clear evidence of the dangers associated with allowing heifers to lose too much weight in late pregnancy was provided by these experiments. The loss of around 0.5 kg/day during the last trimester of pregnancy was associated with weak labour, increase dystocia rates, increased perinatal mortality, reduced calf growth rate, prolonged post partum anoestrus and a reduced pregnancy rate (not all statistically significant differences). These effects were not evident in heifers which were maintaining or gaining weight at a moderate rate during late pregnancy. On the basis of this work it is suggested that heifers should be fed to allow modest rates of bodyweight gain (0--0.5 kg/day) during late pregnancy.  相似文献

The incidence of dystocias and the calving performance of primiparous Hereford heifers from 2 herds, one with a low (A) and the other a high (B) dystocia history, were compared when all animals were run on the same property in southern Queensland.
The dystocia incidence was 21.4% for Herd A heifers and 40.5% for Herd B heifers (P≅0.10). While Herd A heifers had significantly (P<0.05) heavier calves than Herd B heifers (29.1 v 27.7 kg), the ratio of calf birth weight to dam pelvic brim area was 0.11 kg/cm2 for both groups. Differences in the size of the maternal pelvis, calf oversize and the type of presentation recorded for assisted births did not satisfactorily explain the difference in the incidence of dystocias. The circumstantial evidence indicated that inherent factors may affect dystocia.  相似文献

Six mature, pregnant, anaplasmosis-susceptible and 3 anaplasmosis-carrier beef cows were used in Anaplasma in utero transmission studies. Susceptible cows were randomly allotted into 3 groups of 2 cows each and were inoculated with a Virginia A marginale stabilate. Each group was Anaplasma-exposed once during 1 of the 3 trimesters of pregnancy. Blood samples were obtained from each fetus at various stages of development for evaluation and for subinoculation into splenectomized calves once during gestation. Precolostral blood from neonates was also subinoculated into individual susceptible calves. Two of the 9 splenectomized calves given fetal blood inoculations developed acute anaplasmosis. The dam of 1 fetus with infective blood was Anaplasma-exposed during the 2nd trimester of pregnancy, and the dam of the second fetus was exposed during her 3rd trimester. Infective fetal blood was obtained during the same trimester of gestation in which the dams were inoculated. Calves given neonatal precolostral blood did not develop anaplasmosis.  相似文献

Feeding ionophores to beef cows or replacement heifers fed harvested forages increases weight gain and improves feed efficiency. These responses are influenced by diet quality and body condition of the animal. These compounds may reduce postpartum interval to estrus, but this effect appears to be diminished if nutritional status is poor. Although ionophores do not alter fertility, they decrease age at puberty in the female. These changes in reproductive performance appear to be related to a hormonal response to an increased propionate:acetate ratio in the rumen characteristic of ionophore feeding. Responses to ionophores in milk yield and weight gain improvements in calves of ionophore-fed cows are variable. Length of gestation, incidence of dystocia, calf birth weights and percent calf crop are not altered by ionophore feeding. The potential to improve cow herd production through the use of ionophores depends primarily on forage quality and availability.  相似文献

A trial is described in which groups of Angus heifers mated as yearlings were maintained on two widely differing nutritional levels during the last third of gestation in order to study effects on birth weight of calves and dystocia. The different nutritional levels produced a 5 lb difference in birth weight of calves (P < 0.01). As the calving season advanced the mean calf birth weight increased by 1.4 lb every ten days (P < 0.01). Heifers that suffered dystocia had calves 7 lb heavier and pelves 15.6 sq cm smaller than heifers calving normally (P < 0.01). Following observations on the birth process it was concluded that uncomplicated birth is complicated within two hours following the appearance of the amniotic sac.  相似文献

The high incidence of stillbirth in Swedish Holstein heifers has increased continuously during the last 15 years to an average of 11% today. The pathological reasons behind the increased incidence of stillbirth are unknown. The present experiment was undertaken to investigate possible causes of stillbirth and to study possible physiological markers for predicting stillbirth. Twenty Swedish Holstein dairy heifers sired by bulls with breeding values for a high risk of stillbirth (n = 12) (experimental group) and a low risk of stillbirth (n = 8) (control group, group B) were selected based on information in the Swedish AI-data base. The experimental group consisted of 2 subgroups of heifers (groups A1 and A2) inseminated with 2 different bulls with 3.5% and 9% higher stillbirth rates than the average, and the control group consisted of heifers pregnant with 5 different bulls with 0%-6% lower stillbirth rates than the average. The bull used for group A1 had also calving difficulties due to large calves as compared to the bull in group A2 showing no calving difficulties. The heifers were supervised from 6-7 months of pregnancy up to birth, and the pregnancies and parturitions were compared between groups regarding hormonal levels, haematology, placental characteristics and calf viability. In group A1, 1 stillborn, 1 weak and 4 normal calves were recorded. In group A2, 2 stillborn and 4 normal calves were registered. All animals in the control group gave birth to a normal living calf without any assistance. The weak calf showed deviating profiles of body temperature, saturated oxygen and heart rates, compared with the normal living calves. No differences of the placentome thickness, measured in vivo by ultrasonography were seen between the groups. The number of leukocytes and differential cell counts in groups A1 and A2 followed the profiles found in the control group. In group A1, a slight decrease of oestrone sulphate (E1SO4) levels was found in the animal delivering a stillborn calf from the first 24-h blood sampling at 6 weeks to the second at 3 weeks prior to delivery, while the levels of E1SO4 at both periods in the animal delivering a weak calf followed the profile in animals delivering a normal living calf. During late pregnancy and at the time of parturition, the levels of E1SO4 and PAGs in animals delivering a stillborn or weak calf (from group A1) followed the normal profiles found in animals delivering a normal living calf. In group A2, low levels of E1SO4 and pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) over 24 h at both 3 and 6 weeks prior to parturition (< 1.5 nmol/L) were recorded in animals delivering a stillborn calf. During late pregnancy and parturition, the levels of E1SO4 and PAGs were slightly lower during 30-50 days prior to delivery and increased with a lower magnitude at the time of parturition. In conclusion, our results indicate that the aetiology behind stillbirth varies depending on the AI-bulls used and is associated with dystocia or low viability of the calves. Deviating profiles of oestrone sulphate (E1SO4) and pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) in animals delivering a stillborn calf not caused by dystocia were observed, suggesting placental dysfunction as a possible factor. The finding suggests that the analyses of E1SO4 and PAGs could be used for monitoring foetal well-being in animals with a high risk of stillbirth at term.  相似文献

The effects of increasing fetal numbers and their distribution between the left and right uterine horns on calf survival, calf BW at birth and weaning, gestation length, dystocia, and calf sex ratio were evaluated for single (n = 1,587), twin (n = 2,440), and triplet calves (n = 147) born to primiparous and multiparous females in the Twinner population at the US Meat Animal Research Center between 1994 and 2004. Cattle were distributed equally between the spring and fall breeding seasons. Fetal number and distribution in utero were determined by real-time ultrasonography at 40 to 70 d postbreeding. For cows and heifers combined, number of calves per parturition increased from 1.34 in 1994 to 1.56 in 2004. Gestation length was 6.8 d shorter (P < 0.01) for twins compared with singles (277.5 +/- 0.2 vs. 284.3 +/- 0.2 d) and 12.7 d shorter for triplets (271.6 +/- 0.8 d). Survival and BW of individual calves at birth decreased (P < 0.01) but total calf BW per dam increased (P < 0.01) as fetal number increased from single to triplet births. Twins resulting from bilateral twin ovulations had increased (P < 0.01) survival and BW at birth, a longer (P < 0.01) gestation length, and less (P < 0.01) dystocia than twins resulting from unilateral twin ovulations. Calf survival and BW at birth were 97.2 +/- 0.3% and 48.0 +/- 0.1 kg for singles, 92.0 +/- 0.4% and 39.0 +/- 0.2 kg for bilateral twins, 83.2 +/- 0.4% and 36.7 +/- 0.2 kg for unilateral twins, 73.8 +/- 1.4% and 30.6 +/- 0.7 kg for bilateral triplets, and 51.9 +/- 3.2% and 31.7 +/- 1.6 kg for unilateral triplets. Birth weight of single calves increased by 0.51 kg/d for each additional day of gestation length vs. 0.38 kg/d for individual twins. Calf BW at birth increased (P < 0.01) with age of dam from 2 to 4 yr. Twin and triplet births had a greater (P < 0.01) incidence of dystocia than single births. The ratio of male:female calves (0.52:0.48) at birth was not affected by type of birth. Postnatal calf survival was similar for all 3 types of birth. Total progeny BW at weaning for single, twin, and triplet births was 217.7 +/- 2.5, 328.3 +/- 3.2, and 378.4 +/- 15.0 kg, respectively (P < 0.01). Although most bovine females have the uterine capacity to gestate twin calves, decreased survival and BW of unilateral twins and of all triplets indicate that their growth and development may have been compromised by uterine crowding.  相似文献

Simmental bulls (n = 27) were divergently selected on linear model first-calf calving ease expected progeny difference (CEPD) relative to birth weight expected progeny difference (BEPD) so that body measures of calves from sires whose progeny tended to be born either with more or less dystocia than expected from BEPD could be obtained. At birth, calf weight, head circumference, shoulder width, hip width, heart girth, cannon bone circumference and length, and body length were recorded for 204 calves. These measures had also been obtained from the Polled Hereford X Angus dams of the calves at their births. Sire differences (P less than .05) existed for calf cannon bone circumference and length before and after adjustment for gestation length and birth weight of the calf. Sire BEPD was positively associated with cannon and head circumferences independent of phenotypic birth weight and gestation length. No relationship existed between CEPD or threshold model first-calf calving ease expected progeny difference and any calf measure, either before or after adjustment for birth weight. Multivariate factor analysis was used to describe independent components of skeletal width, frame, and thickness after removal of birth weight effects; factors were not related to genetic merit for calving ease or observed calving performance. Independent of weight, newborn calf measures were not highly related to body measures at weaning or to dam birth measures. Body shape differences at constant weight existed in crossbred calves, but they were not related to sire genetic merit for calving ease or measured dystocia. Selection for calf body shape, independent of birth weight, would not reduce dystocia.  相似文献

Calving performance records (965,417) from purebred American Angus herds throughout the United States were used to study dystocia and early calf mortality during the period from 1972 to 1985. A sample of 53 (n = 83,467) herds was used to establish reasonable limits on the expected frequency of dystocia and mortality within and among herds that have good reproductive management programs and to verify the frequencies of scores in all other herds (n = 4,130) reporting calving performance information. The data were analyzed by logistic regression models. Dystocia and perinatal mortality, to a lesser extent, were found to be more frequent in heifers than in cows. The odds of unassisted births vs births with major difficulty were 11.58 times greater in cows than in heifers. In heifers, the odds of an unassisted birth increased with age of dam and decreased with birth weight of calf. At a baseline age of 22 mo the odds of an unassisted birth for calves weighing 30 and 40 kg were .13 and .02 times lower than the odds for calves weighing 20 kg. Alternately, at 29 mo, the odds of an unassisted birth for heifers producing a 20-kg calf were 4.53 times greater than at 22 mo. Survival of calves to 24 h in heifers was primarily affected by birth weight. Heifers producing calves at intermediate weights of 29 kg had higher odds of producing live calves at all ages. Considering all heifers calving at 22 to 29 mo relative to 20-kg calves, the odds for survival to 24 h were 3.83 times greater for 29-kg calves and lower by a factor of .52 for 40-kg calves.  相似文献

Two-year-old crossbred beef heifers were used to test the effects of porcine relaxin (pRelaxin) alone, or in combination with dexamethasone, on the induction of parturition, the incidence of dystocia, and retained placentas. Effects of treatment on pelvic area, postpartum interval, milk production, colostrum quality, calf birth weight, calf vigor, and calf performance were also evaluated. On Day 275 of gestation, heifers from two fetal-sire groups were randomly assigned to one of four groups in a 2 × 2 factorial design and received: no treatment (controls, N = 19), 20 mg of dexamethasone intramuscularly (im) (n = 22), 5 mg of pRelaxin (3,000 U/mg) im (n = 19), or 20 mg of dexamethasone plus 5 mg of pRelaxin (n = 17). Length of gestation (in days) was less (P < 0.05) in heifers treated with dexamethasone (279.8 ± 1.0) than in controls (286.6 ± 0.9), but was not influenced (P > 0.05) by treatment with pRelaxin. The incidence of retained placentas in heifers treated only with dexamethasone (27.3%) was not reduced by concomitant treatment with pRelaxin (35.3%). Retained placentas were not observed in any control heifers and in only one heifer (5.2%) treated solely with pRelaxin. Ease of calving (1 = unassisted, 5 = abnormal presentation) was not influenced by treatment (P > 0.05), even though birth weights (in kilograms) of calves from heifers treated with dexamethasone (36.4 ± 0.8) were less (P < .01) than those of calves from nondexamethasone-treated heifers (39.2 ± 0.8). Dexamethasone tended to reduce (P < 0.07) calf vigor (1 = healthy and strong, 5 = dead on arrival; 1.48 ± 0.11 vs. 1.18 ± 0.11), but was not (P > 0.05) influenced by pRelaxin. The duration of the postpartum anestrous interval (73.1 ± 1.8 d across groups) and pelvic areas following treatment and parturition were not influenced (P > 0.05) by dexamethasone or pRelaxin. Although determinants of colostrum quality (P < 0.01) and quantity (P < 0.08) of milk produced were influenced by dexamethasone, adjusted 205-d weights of calves did not differ (P > 0.05) among groups. In conclusion, treatment with pRelaxin alone failed to induce parturition or, when combined with dexamethasone, to reduce the incidence of retained placentas.  相似文献

The effects of twinning, dystocia, retained placenta, and body weight on postpartum reproduction were evaluated for 3,370 single and 1,014 twin births. Females were bred by AI for 40 d followed by 20 or 30 d of natural service with equal numbers bred and calved in spring and fall. Percentage of dams cyclic by the end of the AI period was lower (P<.05) for dams birthing and nursing a single calf (92.4%) than for dams birthing twins and nursing zero (98.7%) or two (94.7%) calves. Whereas the interval from parturition to first estrus was shorter (P<.01) for dams birthing and nursing a single (56.9 d) than for dams birthing twins and nursing one (68.5 d) or two (69.6 d) calves, length of the interval was further reduced by dystocia in nonlactating dams of either twins or singles (type of birth x dystocia, P<.05). Ensuing pregnancy rates were also affected by type of birth and dystocia. Without dystocia, dams birthing and nursing a single calf had a higher pregnancy rate (79.2%) than dams birthing twins and nursing one (61.7%) or two (66.3%) calves, whereas the lower ensuing pregnancy rates associated with dystocia in dams of singles (71.9%) resulted in similar rates among dams of singles and twins with dystocia (type of birth x dystocia; P<.01). Having a retained placenta resulted in a lower incidence of (93.5 vs. 96.4%, with vs. without; P<.05) and a longer interval to (64.7 vs. 59.2 d; P<.01) estrus while reducing subsequent pregnancy rates (X = 9.6%) in 3 of the 7 yr evaluated (retained placenta x year, P<.01). Because all parous females were bred during the same calendrical period, the shorter gestation length for twin calves (275.6 vs. 281.3 d) resulted in a longer interval from parturition to conception for twin births, whereas means for conception date differed by only 2 d between dams of twins and singles. Furthermore, a reduction (P<.01) in the interval to conception occurred with dystocia in dams of singles (89.3 vs. 85.0 d, without vs. with dystocia) and of twins nursed by zero (116.9 vs. 83.5 d), one (100.2 vs. 92.8 d), or two (96.1 vs. 97.2 d) calves. Another detriment to fertility was the higher incidence of fetal mortality or abortions associated with twin vs. single pregnancies (12.4 vs. 3.5%; P<.01). However, despite the lower conception rates for dams of twins, the increased prolificacy provides an opportunity to increase total beef production with a twinning technology.  相似文献

Data relating to dystocia were obtained for 22% of beef herds in the Roma region of southern Queensland. In 1973 dystocia incidence in 23,129 maiden heifers was 12%; 4% of heifers and 7% of calves died. Thirty-five per cent of the 444 herds surveyed had more than a 10% incidence of dystocia, and 10% had more than a 30% incidence of dystocia. Only 6% of herds had no dystocia. Among the 73% of producers considering dystocia a problem in most years, 14% regarded it as a major problem. The incidence of dystocia in heifers was significantly higher in Poll Hereford than Hereford herds, which in turn were higher than other breeds of cattle. Poll Hereford and Hereford owners were the most concerned about dystocia but did not supervise calving more frequently. Dystocia and attitude were also examined in relation to degree of supervision at calving and size of the breeding herd.  相似文献

Objective-To determine whether administration of 2 doses of a multivalent, modified-live virus vaccine prior to breeding of heifers would provide protection against abortion and fetal infection following exposure of pregnant heifers to cattle persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and cattle with acute bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) infection. Design-Randomized controlled clinical trial. Animals-33 crossbred beef heifers, 3 steers, 6 bulls, and 25 calves. Procedures-20 of 22 vaccinated and 10 of 11 unvaccinated heifers became pregnant and were commingled with 3 steers PI with BVDV type 1a, 1b, or 2 for 56 days beginning 102 days after the second vaccination (administered 30 days after the first vaccination). Eighty days following removal of BVDV-PI steers, heifers were commingled with 3 bulls with acute BHV1 infection for 14 days. Results-After BVDV exposure, 1 fetus (not evaluated) was aborted by a vaccinated heifer; BVDV was detected in 0 of 19 calves from vaccinated heifers and in all 4 fetuses (aborted after BHV1 exposure) and 6 calves from unvaccinated heifers. Bovine herpesvirus 1 was not detected in any fetus or calf and associated fetal membranes in either treatment group. Vaccinated heifers had longer gestation periods and calves with greater birth weights, weaning weights, average daily gains, and market value at weaning, compared with those for calves born to unvaccinated heifers. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Prebreeding administration of a modified-live virus vaccine to heifers resulted in fewer abortions and BVDV-PI offspring and improved growth and increased market value of weaned calves.  相似文献

Postweaning growth rates from weaning to 18 mo, fall condition score, pregnancy rates, and production to 2 yr of age were evaluated in a study of Angus (A)-, Pinzgauer (P)-, Red Poll (R)-, Simmental (S)-, and Tarentaise (T)-sired females from Hereford dams. First-cross heifers from the different sire breeds did not differ (P greater than .10) in initial weight. During a 140-d feed test, S gained 98.6 kg, exceeding (P less than .05) gains of P, 92.3; A, 91.4; and R, 87.3 kg but not T, 94.1 kg. Red Poll-sired heifers weighed less at the end of the 140-d test (P less than .05) than the other crosses, which did not significantly differ from each other. No breed of sire differences were found in gain from 140 d to fall weight. Simmental-sired heifers weighed more (P less than .05) than A- and R-sired heifers at 18 mo. Breed of sire and year interacted to affect pregnancy rate of the yearling heifers when mated to Shorthorn sires for 45 d. Percentage of dystocia varied from a low of 26.3 and 28.9% for T- and A-sired heifers, respectively, to 54.4 and 60.8% for P- and S-sired heifers, respectively (P less than .05). Age of dam of heifers affected (P less than .05) weight at the different period end points but not gains after weaning. Age of dam also affected incidence of dystocia. Two-year-old heifers from young dams had more dystocia than heifers from older dams. Shorthorn-sired calves from 2-yr-old heifers with different sire breeds differed in birth weight (P less than .05) but not survival from birth to weaning, ADG from birth to weaning, weaning age, or weaning condition score. Average 200-d weight of calves from P-, S- and T-sired heifers exceeded those from A- and R-sired heifers by 10.7 kg, or 5.7%.  相似文献

Fifteen Hereford and 47 crossbred heifers were allotted by breed and body weight to be artificially inseminated to one of two Angus sires selected for progeny birth weights (L = low; H = high). Forty-two of the heifers were randomly assigned to be slaughtered at 200, 215, 230, 245 or 260 d of gestation for measurement of fetal and placental characteristics. Twenty heifers were allowed to go to term and five calves from each sire group were randomly assigned to be euthanized and dissected within 24 h after birth. Sire differences in birth weight (BW) and dystocia score (32.9 vs 35.4 kg; 1.8 vs 3.1, L vs H sires, respectively) existed (P less than .01), and there was a sire effect (P less than .01) for fetal calf weights (FW) and eviscerated calf weights (EW). However, there was a sire X calf sex interaction for BW (P less than .05), EW (P less than .01), FW (P less than .01), femur length (P less than .05), heart weight (P less than .05), kidney weight (P less than .01) and pituitary weight (P less than .01). Weight differences suggested these interactions were a result of the relationship of the organ weights to fetal body weights and the interaction effects on calf weights resulted from limitations in the maternal environment which restricted growth of H-sired male calves in utero. Sire X fetal age interaction effects were all nonsignificant (P greater than .10) except for cerebrum weight. This finding indicates that fetus and calf growth rates were parallel for the L and H sires. A sire effect was found for biceps (P less than .01) and liver weights (P less than .01), but not for cerebrum weights (P greater than .10). Increasing weight due to fetal age was attributed to hypertrophy for the cerebrum (P less than .05) and liver (P approximately equal to .01), while the biceps increased (P less than .05) by both hypertrophy and hyperplasia, as determined from deoxyribonucleic acid and protein analyses. All measured fetal organ weights except heart, when expressed as a ratio with EW, decreased (P less than .05) with increasing fetal age. Brain (cerebrum + cerebellum):liver weight ratios were higher (P less than .01) in L-sired calves (.32 vs. .28) than in H-sired calves. Total placentome weight (b' = 91; P less than .01) and placental fluid volume (b' = .32; P less than .01) were highly associated with FW, accounting for 84% of the variation in FW.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

A bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) isolate (FI) from an aborted fetus was used to infect 9 heifers at various stages of gestation. Two heifers were inoculated IV on postbreeding day (PBD) 1, 7, or 14, and 3 heifers were inoculated in the sixth month of pregnancy. Plasma progesterone assays were used to monitor corpus luteum function in heifers inoculated during early pregnancy. Low progesterone values and infertility were seen in the 2 heifers inoculated on PBD 1. Luteal function remained normal in heifers inoculated on PBD 7 or 14. These 4 heifers inoculated on PBD 7 or 14 carried their fetuses to term, and their calves were free of BHV-1 infection at birth. Three heifers inoculated during the sixth month of pregnancy also carried their fetuses to term. Two calves were born alive, and BHV-1 was not isolated from nasal swab samples of either calf; the third calf was stillborn. Virus was not isolated from the stillborn calf's tissues, but BHV-1 was isolated from the placenta. Lesions were not detected in several tissues examined by light microscopy, and BHV-1 antigen was not detected by immunohistochemical examination of paraffin sections. Restriction endonuclease analysis of viral DNA was used to compare the FI virus to other BHV-1 isolates (Colorado-1, Iowa, and K22). On the basis of restriction endonuclease analysis, the FI isolate should be classified as a type-2 (infectious pustular vulvovaginitis) virus, specifically subtype a.  相似文献

An evaluation of natural twinning in beef cattle revealed that cows birthing twins had shorter (P less than .01) gestation lengths, more (P less than .01) retained placentas, more (P less than .01) dystocia, more (P less than .01) days to estrus, lower (P less than .01) conception rates and more (P less than .01) days to pregnancy than cows birthing singles. Days to estrus, conception rate and days to pregnancy were not affected by number of calves reared (1 vs 2) in cows birthing twins. Survival at birth was greater (P less than .01) for single- than for twin-born calves, but twins and singles did not differ (P greater than .05) in postnatal survival. When dystocia was experienced, calf survival at birth was 95% vs 73% for singles vs twins compared with 99% vs 92% when no dystocia was experienced. Calves born twins were lighter (P less than .01) at birth, 100 d and 200 d, but twins and singles did not differ in postweaning gains. Total calf weights at 100 d per cow calving were 12% greater (P less than .01) in cows birthing twins vs singles when twin calves reared by foster dams were excluded. The potential increase in cow productivity for total calf weight at 100 d is 40% if calf survival rates of twins with dystocia relative to survival rates of twins without dystocia were comparable to survival rates of singles with and without dystocia, and if cows birthing twins were fed and managed to obtain conception rates equal to those of cows birthing singles. Identification of cows gestating twins to provide for their higher prepartum nutritive requirements and calving assistance at parturition is necessary to make twinning in cattle an economically viable technology.  相似文献

Study 1, pregnant crossbred, first-calf heifers (n = 149; BW 493.8 ± 6.3) received gestation diets: control (CON), or added safflower seeds (SAFF), raw soybeans (SOY), or sunflower seeds (SUN). Diets were formulated isocaloric-isonitrogenous, contained 2.4, 4.7, 3.8, or 5.1% fat, and were fed for the last 65.3 ± 4.6 d precalving. Supplemental fat feeding was terminated at calving. Diet effects on dam BW or condition scores and calf birth BW, calving difficulty, and dam estrous cyclicity were generally nonsignificant (P>0.10). Fat-supplemented dams had greater pregnancy rates (P<0.05) and fall calf BW (P=0.08): CON, 79%, 182.4 kg; SAFF 94%, 194.9 kg; SOY, 90%, 197.7 kg; SUN, 91%, 196.8 kg. Study 2, pregnant crossbred, first-calf heifers (n = 83; BW 439.8 ± 7.3) received gestation diets: control (CON2) or added sunflower seeds (SUN2). Diets were formulated isocaloric-isonitrogenous, contained 2.2 and 6.5% fat, and were fed for the last 68.2 ± 5.5 d before calving. Supplemental fat feeding was terminated at calving. Blood samples were collected during the feeding period. Diet effects on dam BW, condition scores, estrous cyclicity, and pregnancy percentage were nonsignificant. Calf birth BW from SUN2 dams tended (P=0.06) to be greater. Diet effects on blood components were nonsignificant except for NEFA concentrations tending to be lower in SUN2 dams at the initial (P=0.08) and mid-gestation feeding (P=0.06) sampling. Major differences were found in forage availability between Studies 1 and 2. We conclude that dietary fat or fatty acids may be an important “reproductive fuel,” and effects of supplemental gestation fat may be masked when adequate nutrients are available in forages consumed postpartum.  相似文献
