Mycobacterial infections are rare in equines. Mycobacterium bovis (Mbovis) is an important zoonotic bacterial pathogen causing disease in a wide range of animal species and sporadically causes severe disseminated disease in horses. This report describes the clinical, gross post‐mortem examination and histopathological findings in a case of disseminated M. bovis infection in a donkey which to the authors’ knowledge has not been previously documented in the scientific literature.  相似文献

This case report discusses the clinical signs, diagnostic findings, treatment and outcome for a donkey (Equus asinus) diagnosed with coccidioidomycosis. At presentation, the donkey was lame, was in poor body condition, had a draining tract over the left femur and was hyporexic. Further investigation of the draining tract via radiography and ultrasonography showed a focal lesion of extensive bony proliferation and lysis on the mid-shaft of the left femur. There was also a soft tissue swelling over the fifth left rib. AGID titres were positive for Coccidioides immitis. Recommended treatment for C. immitis consists of two antifungal classes, the azoles and amphotericin B, with this donkey being prescribed daily fluconazole. A recheck 3 months from initial diagnosis showed marked improvement of clinical signs, but the C. immitis titre remained unchanged. The 18-month recheck showed improvement radiographically and significantly decreased titres. After 3 years of daily treatment of fluconazole, the C. immitis titre was decreased, but radiographs of the femur still showed persistent bony proliferation.  相似文献

The physical localization of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene was performed on donkey chromosomes. Bacterial artificial chromosome DNA containing the equine EGFR gene was used to map this gene by fluorescent in situ hybridization on donkey metaphase chromosomes. The gene was mapped on donkey 1q21.1 region.  相似文献

A mature donkey was presented for evaluation of a forelimb lameness and presence of a large mass on the left forelimb distal to the elbow joint. Clinical examination, radiographs and cytological examination of ultrasound‐guided fine needle aspirates of the mass led to a presumptive diagnosis of osteosarcoma. The donkey was subsequently subjected to euthanasia. Post mortem examination confirmed the diagnosis of osteosarcoma in the proximal radius with expansion of the mass through the ulnar cortex and metastases to liver and regional lymph nodes, areas of metastasis previously unreported in the equine literature.  相似文献

Serial ultrasound examinations of the gravid uterus of a Jenny donkey (Equus asinus) carrying a transferred extraspecies horse (Equus caballus) conceptus between 11 and 33 days of gestation demonstrated that the embryo died before Day 33 even though the conceptus persisted in the uterus and the horse chorionic girdle invaded the maternal endometrium to form a circle of typically large horse endometrial cups in the right uterine horn. The high concentrations of horse CG secreted by these cups with its higher than usual ratio of FSH-like to LH-like biological activities of 1.4 compared to the 0.1 ratio of normal donkey CG hyper-stimulated the donkey’s ovaries to develop multiple large accessory follicles and resulting secondary corpora lutea which secreted high concentrations of progestagens that persisted in her bloodstream for the next 90 days. This case illustrated that, in all likelihood, girdle invasion can happen after the death of the embryo indicating autonomy of the chorionic girdle.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of haplotypes in Cytb (Cytochrome b) gene on growth traits in three Chinese donkey breeds, Yunnan donkey (YN), Dezhou donkey (DZ) and Liangzhou donkey (LZ). The samples were genotyped for the Cytb gene by single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP), and association analysis was conducted with growth traits. The results show that in most cases the effects of the gene on growth traits were not significant and that for the three different donkey breeds, the effects of the gene are different. For YN donkeys, there was a significant effect of the gene on the rump width (P < 0.05) and the effect of genotype AA was larger than that of BB genotype (1.6 cm and 5.4% of the trait mean in YN donkeys, P < 0.05). For DZ donkeys, the effect of gene on body height was significant (P < 0.05). The results also verify that the SSCPs are caused by two cytosine to thymine and one guanine to adenine transitions, corresponding to amino acid substitutions of leucine for proline (L ↔ P) and isoleucine for valine (I ↔ V).  相似文献

Rectal prolapse has been attributed to conditions generating tenesmus or increasing abdominal pressure in both horses and donkeys. This report presents the case of a 7‐year‐old gelded donkey that sustained a type IV rectal prolapse secondary to a long‐standing cystic calculus after several episodes of intermittent mucosal prolapse. Rectal prolapse was addressed first on an emergency basis by colorectostomy. After medical stabilisation, pain and straining management with repeated epidural drug administrations, a laparoscopic‐assisted cystotomy was performed one week later to remove the calculus. The donkey was discharged and resumed his normal life at pasture.  相似文献

A novel and brief method of differentiating among horse (Equus caballus) and donkey (Equus asinus) and their hybrids (mule, E. asinus × E. caballus and hinny, E. caballus × E. asinus) with combined analysis of nuclear and mitochondrial gene polymorphism (CANMGP) was reported in the present report. A nuclear gene, protamine P1 gene of donkey was sequenced and compared with the known horse sequence from GenBank while a published equid mitochondrial gene, cytochrome b gene of donkey was compared with that of horse. In each of the two genes, a fixed nucleotide substitution within an exon that could be recognized by Dpn II restriction enzyme was found between the two species. Two pairs of primers were designed for amplifying the fragments within the two genes containing the informative nucleotide positions in 65 horses and 41 donkeys and 38 hybrids and conditions of polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) analysis were optimized. Horse, donkey and mule and hinny had their own specific cleavage patterns after the PCR‐RFLP analysis was performed, which made it very easy to identify them from each other. As multiplex PCR can be conducted with the two pairs of primers and only one restriction enzyme is involved in PCR‐RFLP analysis, the method described in the present study is a convenient way to identify horse and donkey and their hybrids. The idea involved in the method of CANMGP can be also used to differentiate other animal species or breeds and their hybrids.  相似文献

Degenerative myelopathy was diagnosed in a donkey Equus asinus and a Welsh pony Equus caballus. Both equids were presented for gradually progressive incoordination. Neurologic examination revealed symmetrical weakness and ataxia which was much more prominent in the rear limbs than in the front limbs. Laboratory tests including a complete blood count, serum biochemistry, cerebrospinal fluid analysis and lateral cervical radiographs were performed in both equids and were unremarkable. Both equids were euthanized and microscopic examination of the spinal cords revealed diffuse neuronal degeneration, demyelination and neuraxonal dystrophy.  相似文献

Habronemiasis, otherwise known as summer sores, is a parasitic disease of horses, donkeys and other equids, commonly encountered in subtropical and tropical regions. It occurs as a result of nematode infestation of the skin and typically manifests as ulcerative granulating lesions or masses. Habronema muscae, Habronema microstoma and Draschia megastoma are the usual invaders, usually transmitted by house flies, face flies and stable flies. In this case report, an eosinophilic granuloma on the urethral process of a 15-year-old gelding is presented, followed by successful surgical excision without further medical treatment. To the authors’ knowledge, equine eosinophilic granuloma on the urethral process associated with habronemiasis has not previously been documented in southern Europe and should be considered as a potential differential diagnosis for penile masses.  相似文献

The Catalonian donkey is one of the most endangered donkey breeds in the world. At present, five main subpopulations exist: AFRAC, which consists of many genetically connected Catalonian localities; Berga, which consists of a single herd located also in Catalunya but under private management; and three minor non‐Catalonian subpopulations (Huesca, Sevilla and Toledo). In this study, we analysed the pedigree information of the Catalonian donkey herdbook to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of the breed. We found that the Catalonian donkey has suffered an important loss of genetic diversity and moderate to high increases of inbreeding because of the abuse of a few individuals in matings. This scenario is mainly characterized by the fact that both the effective number of founders and ancestors for the whole population was 70.6 and 27, respectively, while the equivalent number of founders was 146.5 and the number of ancestors explaining overall genetic variability was 93. In addition, only 14% of animals born between the 1960s and 1970s were significantly represented in the pedigree. Our results also show that subpopulations where breeders exchanged reproductive individuals had low levels of inbreeding and average relatedness. One subpopulation, Berga, was reproductively isolated and showed high levels of inbreeding (F = 7.22%), with average relatedness (AR = 6.61%) playing an important role in increasing the values of these coefficients in the whole pedigree. Using genealogical F‐statistics we have found little evidence of population structuring (FST = 0.0083) with major genetic differences among non‐Catalonian subpopulations.  相似文献

This case report describes an outbreak and novel findings associated with a beta coronavirus (BCoV) infection that occurred on an American Miniature Horse (AMH) breeding farm in upstate New York, in January and February of 2013. Twenty-nine AMH and one donkey were present on the farm when the outbreak occurred. One 10-year-old Quarter Horse mare, stabled at a separate location and owned by an employee of the farm, also tested positive. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of BCoV was performed at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) at Cornell on all faecal samples. The PCR assay used detects multiple beta coronaviruses, including, but not limited to, equine enteric coronavirus (ECoV). Novel findings regarding this BCoV infection in horses were recognised in this outbreak study. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the largest outbreak of BCoV described thus far in a closed herd on a single premise. The case fatality rate was 0% unlike that described in a previous outbreak of ECoV involving miniature horses and a miniature donkey (Fielding et al. 2015). The morbidity rate was lower in this outbreak than in previously described studies (Oue et al. 2013; Pusterla et al. 2013). This outbreak also demonstrated the potential for BCoV transmission via farm personnel. The duration of shedding of virus in the faeces among some asymptomatic horses in this outbreak was longer than previously described clinical cases of ECoV (Pusterla et al. 2013; Nemoto et al. 2014). This study suggests that asymptomatic animals may play a role in the maintenance of BCoV during an outbreak; therefore, the need for diagnostic testing of both clinically affected and apparently clinically normal horses on a premises followed by appropriate biosecurity and control measures.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: The finite element (FE) method is the most powerful modelling technique available to explicate the biomechanics of the digit. It has already proved to be of high value in human podiatry. However, accurate models of the complex anatomy of the horse and donkey digit are currently lacking. Objectives: To develop FE models of the horse and donkey digit from computed tomography data, including all functionally relevant anatomy, and to perform simulations to replicate prestrain in the flexor tendons and quasistatic weightbearing. Methods: Computed tomography data of the front right digits were obtained under general anaesthesia. The anatomy was rationalised into 32 functional components. The FE models were generated using a forward engineering technique. Linear or nonlinear material properties were applied according to published data. Prestraining of the flexor tendons was achieved by z‐direction displacement, and loading by the application of 1 × body mass. Results: The resultant FE models comprised over 106 elements. Z‐direction displacement of the digital flexor tendons to compensate for general anaesthesia relaxation gave von Mises stress levels up to 1.34 MPa for the deep and 0.56 MPa for the superficial in the horse and 0.78 MPa and 0.27 MPa in the donkey, respectively. Weightbearing resulted in capsular deformation patterns consistent with in vivo observations, and maximum stress levels of 1.46 MPa for the horse and 0.89 MPa for the donkey. Conclusion: These high resolution FE models could give new insight into the biomechanics of the equid digit and provide new data regarding stress and strain levels within the tissues of the digit that are unobtainable by other means. Potential relevance: Application of the FE modelling technique could enable investigation of the biomechanics of orthopaedic problems and may provide a mechanistic basis for enhanced preventative and remedial management and treatment.  相似文献

There has been only one reported case of tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis in a free-living wild rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus cuniculus (1). Because of continued interest in that case, the common classification of rabbits and hares in the family Leporidae and a current report of a case in a hare(2), this opportunity is taken to re-record the case in the rabbit in greater detail.  相似文献

A case of a type I rectal atresia (also known as membranous rectal atresia) in a newborn donkey is reported. Clinical examination, survey radiographs and barium enema radiographs suggested rectal atresia. An exploratory laparotomy was performed; however, surgical correction of the defect was not possible due to the narrow pelvic cavity. Euthanasia was performed. At necropsy, it was possible to observe a fibrous cord connecting the small colon to a residual rectal ampulla, which opened to a normal anus. The radiographic and anatomical characteristics enabled the classification of the defect as type I rectal atresia, which is a rare congenital anomaly that is difficult to correct through surgery. This report contributes to the study of rectal atresia in newborn equids, alerts for the occurrence in donkeys and is, to our knowledge, the first to be reported in this species in Brazil.  相似文献

A rare case of a bilateral Leydig cells tumour located in the testis of a 15-year-old donkey slaughtered normally is presented. Histologically, the testicular tumour showed neoplastic Leydig cells arranged in solid growth as a pseudoadenomatous packet type. To our knowledge, this is the first bilateral Leydig cells tumour, a neoplasm never reported in the donkey.  相似文献

In this study, the mitochondrial DNA diversity of six Spanish donkey breeds and two African donkey populations (one from Morocco and the other from Zimbabwe) was analysed. A total of 79 animals were sequenced for 313 bp of the cytochrome b gene, and 91 individuals for 383 bp of the D‐loop region or control‐region. Sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analyses of both Spanish and African populations revealed low diversity. Only six and seven haplotypes respectively were found in cytochrome b and the D‐loop region. Relatively low nucleotide diversity (π) values were detected in these populations. The π values, from the D‐loop region, ranged from 0.0006 to 0.0169 for the Catalana and Andaluza breeds, respectively. The obtained results seem to confirm the existence of two divergent maternal lineages of African origin (Equus asinus africanus and E. a. somaliensis). In this paper the genetic relationships between these breeds are analysed and compared with those obtained in other European populations. Also, the data on the genetic relationships between the populations, obtained from nuclear DNA (microsatellites) and mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b and D‐loop region) is argued and interpreted.  相似文献

Background

The number of abandoned or otherwise neglected donkeys has significantly increased in Ireland in the recent past. The real or perceived capacity of the donkey to act as a reservoir of equine infectious disease, and thus pose an increased risk of disease transmission to horses and ponies, may be a factor in this increased abandonment and neglect. The authors here report on a field study exploring the infectious disease transmission threat the donkey poses to the general equine industry in Ireland through an examination of biosecurity standards and the views of horse and donkey exhibitors at nine mixed equestrian events in 2014. Quantitative information was gathered via the organising committee (if any) and through an examination of facilities and procedures. Qualitative information was gathered using a semi-structured questionnaire to ascertain the view of exhibitors regarding the keeping of donkeys and any infectious disease transmission risks posed.

Results

At eight of nine events visited there were no entrance controls, no veterinary examinations, no enforcement of legislation regarding equine identification and equine premises registration and no isolation facilities on site for equids. Contact between donkeys and other equids was largely uncontrolled. Exhibitors had travelled from abroad to one event. Exhibitors generally opined that they did not perceive the donkey to represent any additional infectious disease transmission threat above that posed by other equids; there was however a general sense that donkeys were less well regarded for other reasons including nuisance and uselessness.

Conclusions

When biosecurity controls are not in place (or enforced) to actually check passports, verify identification and equine premises registration, mixed equestrian events may unwittingly act as the mechanism of spread of endemic and potentially more seriously exotic equine infectious disease. Donkeys were not generally considered by equine exhibitors at mixed events in Ireland to represent a heightened reservoir of disease or to pose an increased risk of transmission of contagious disease suggesting that other factors should be considered more important when studying the incidence of abandonment and neglect.  相似文献

Chromosomal abnormalities are one of the main causes of genetic infertility in horses. Currently, their detection rate is rising due to the use of new diagnostic tools employing molecular markers linked to the sex chromosome pair. Despite genetic similarities, there are no previous reports of sterility associated with chromosomal abnormalities in the domestic donkey (Equus asinus). Hereby, we determined the presence of a chromosomal mosaicism in a female donkey with reproductive problems using molecular methodologies developed for horses. A two‐and‐a‐half‐year‐old jenny characterized by morphological abnormalities of the reproductive tract was cytogenetically analysed using conventional and fluorescent techniques and a group of microsatellite markers (short tandem repeat, STR). At the same time, five ultrasound measures of the reproductive tract were taken and compared with eight contemporary jennies of the same breed. After slaughter, morphological examinations showed that the case study had a blind vaginal vestibule defining an empty pouch that covered the entrance of the cervical os. Histopathological studies demonstrated that this abnormal structure was compatible with a remnant hymen. Molecular markers, STR and fluorescent in situ hybridization determinations revealed that the animal was a 62, XX/61,X mosaic and, therefore, the first case of chromosomal abnormalities in the sex pair reported in donkeys.  相似文献

A closed complete mid‐diaphyseal spiral fracture of the left femur in a one‐year‐old donkey was treated with a 4.5 mm titanium locking compression plate distal femur (LCP‐DF)1. This plate was originally manufactured for human orthopaedics, primarily for femoral osteosynthesis. The LCP‐DF1 has a distal head plate that was advantageous in this case because the distal fragment was smaller. Post operative radiographs showed optimal femoral reconstruction and a callus was present 3 weeks after surgery. The donkey was sound at the walk and trot 2 months after surgery. Radiographs taken 5 months after surgery showed stable implants and complete healing without complications.  相似文献
