A ceramic coral settlement device (CSD) was developed to raise juvenile corals in situ in preparation for transplantation. The CSD is designed to be deployed in the water before mass spawning of corals, allowing larvae to settle and grow on the CSD before it is fixed to the reef structure. CSDs were aggregated and fixed on 0.2-m2 frames (either 648 or 720 CSDs per frame) and deployed in the Sekisei Lagoon around the full moons of April and May in 2002. Seven frames were collected in August 2002 and settled corals were counted in the laboratory. The maximum number of coral colonies settled on CSDs in one frame was 617, with 94% belonging to the genus Acropora. The aggregated CSDs successfully functioned as a coral settlement substratum, with more appropriate arrangement of CSDs on the frame, enabling greater exposure to sunlight and currents, which is expected to increase the amount of settlement.  相似文献

We developed new assessment methods for Acropora coral recruitment using coral settlement devices (CSDs) and holes of a marine block. Both devices were deployed in situ before mass spawning of Acropora corals. The CSDs were sampled after 3–4 months of spawning to measure early recruitment, whereas holes of the marine block were observed underwater or MB was sampled to observe holes after 1 year of spawning to measure the recruitment. By combining the results, we would know the recruitment (visually identified underwater) in reefs, including the amount of early recruitment (identified by stereomicroscopic methods), and the environmental condition of the coral reef. These results would help to predict the future of a reef. Nagura Bay had a high early Acropora recruitment; however, due to competition with algae and sedimentation, the recruitment of juvenile corals was extremely low. The reef would possibly be healthy and sustainable at sites where both the early recruitment and recruitment are high. However, if both are low, the reef will be in a critical condition where urgent restoration will be required.  相似文献

The growth of Acropora in Sekisei Lagoon was investigated in situ using ceramic coral settlement devices (CSDs) and marine blocks (MBs) with small holes on their surfaces that were deployed prior to a mass spawning event. Acropora that had settled in 10-mm holes on the upper surface of the MBs were found to have grown inwards after 348 days post-mass spawning. After 733 days, the colonies had grown outwards, encrusting the blocks and attaining a maximum diameter of 21.5 mm (3.7 mm). CSDs that had been stacked above each other on frames were separated and observed in situ on 405 and 764 days after mass spawning. After 405 days, the maximum diameter of the encrusting Acropora was 7.6 mm (±2.4 mm), which increased to 19.4 mm (±5.5 mm) after 764 days, with 30% of colonies extending short branches. The length of the branches of Acropora grown on the CSDs fixed to the MBs 3 months after the mass spawning event exceeded the size of the encrusting portion of the colony 629 days after spawning. The mortality of colonies between 1 and 2 years was slight, with the temperatures conducive to coral bleaching that occurred during the study also having only a slight effect.  相似文献

Coral larvae, produced from a mass spawning event, were successfully settled on special stone settlement sticks and raised in situ for eventual transport to other reefs. The test area, Sekisei lagoon, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, is located close to the warm Kuroshio current and is surmised to be the source from which major Japanese corals are derived. A total of 131 settlement sticks, with small holes in their sides to increase protection from grazing (4 mm in diameter and approximately 5 mm deep), were deployed in the lagoon the day before the coral’s mass spawning. After 3 months, 61 sticks were recovered containing 71 corals, mostly in the holes. After 1 year, three corals were confirmed to be growing well and extending outside the holes of the three sticks out of 70 sticks left in the water at the lagoon site. They survived two potentially lethal conditions, that is, high water temperatures with associated extensive coral bleaching and continuous grazing pressure from predators. This procedure is applicable for large-scale coral transplantation, not only in Japan but also in other tropical countries.  相似文献

Satisfying nutrient requirement of corals is still a major constraint for maintaining corals in marine aquariums. Corals are polytrophic in nature. Heterotrophic feeding on zooplankton is one of the corals’ strategies to overcome nutrient deficiency. Artemia salina nauplii are commonly used as biocarriers for many fish larvae in aquaculture and can also serve as a biocarrier for coral in aquariums, provided coral acceptability, optimal feeding rate, and digestibility of the nauplii are well understood. Feeding rate and digestibility of coral fed on A. salina nauplii at 100, 2,000, 4,000, 6,000, and 10,000 ind. l−1 under light and dark conditions was assessed in this study. The maximum feeding rates of Galaxea fascicularis under light and dark conditions was 113.6 ind. polyp−1 h−1 and 76.9 ind. polyp−1 h−1, respectively. The daily feeding rates of G. fascicularis varies and depends on nauplii density. Light plays an important role in coral feeding. Nevertheless, the quantity of A. salina nauplii consumed by the coral under light and dark conditions was not significantly different (P > 0.05). A. salina nauplii are well accepted by G. fascicularis. Complete nauplii digestion was observed after 180 min. Digestibility of A. salina nauplii by G. fascicularis was positively correlated with digestion time.  相似文献

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) has been shown to confer resistance in numerous terrestrial insects that consume potentially toxic secondary metabolites in plants, but fewer studies have examined the role of critical biotransformation enzymes in allowing marine organisms to consume chemically defended foods. This study examined the expression of CYP1A and CYP2N mRNAs in several butterflyfish species, which can feed on numerous chemically defended soft and hard corals. In addition, the effect of an extract from a soft coral (Sinnularia maxima) on expression of hepatic CYP1A and CYP2 mRNAs was also examined. Fish were fed extracts on days 1, 3 and 5, and expression was examined on day 5. Phylogenetic analyses of the CYP1A cDNA from 12 species of butterflyfish (DNA, amino acid) indicate well-separated groupings according to their feeding strategies. The non-coralline feeding Chaetodon xanthurus exhibited a 7-fold higher basal expression of CYP2N8 relative to the other species studied. Although induction of CYP2N7 expression was observed in C. punctatofasciatus, CYP1A and CYP2N was largely unaffected or diminished by extract treatment in the other species of butterflyfish. These results indicated groupings of feeding strategy with CYP1A phylogeny in Chaetodon, but generally unaltered expression of CYP1A and CYP2N following dietary treatment with an extract from a chemically defended soft coral suggesting an inconclusive role of these isoforms in the detoxification of chemicals in these extracts.  相似文献

  1. Sexual and asexual modes of coral propagation are used to produce materials to actively restore coral cover on degraded reefs. It is important to evaluate growth, survival and cost‐effectiveness prior to any large‐scale intervention.
  2. This study compared the growth, survival and cost of using sexually, compared with asexually, propagated Acropora granulosa at an in situ nursery and, subsequently, on degraded reef patches in the north‐western Philippines.
  3. For sexual propagation, gametes spawned from gravid A. granulosa colonies were collected, fertilized and reared at an outdoor hatchery facility until they were 200‐day‐old juveniles. For asexual propagation, coral nubbins (obtained from colonies used in the sexual propagation experiment) were reared in the hatchery for 1 month before being transferred to an in situ nursery.
  4. Sexually and asexually derived corals were reared at the in situ nursery and subsequently out‐planted to a degraded reef. Cumulative survival and growth of sexually derived corals were significantly higher than those of the asexually derived ones, both at the in situ nursery (for 200 days) and on coral bommies (for 382 days). At the in situ nursery, mean growth rates were 0.04 and 0.12 cm3 day?1 for the asexually produced and sexually produced corals, respectively, while those at the bommies were 0.7 and 1.04 cm3 day?1, respectively.
  5. Production cost (including collection, hatchery‐ and in situ nursery‐rearing) is more expensive in the sexual (US$2.79/coral) than in the asexual (US$2.62/coral) mode of propagation. However, after 13 months post‐out‐planting it was clear that, in the long run, the individual cost of sexually derived corals is cheaper than the asexual counterparts, US$20.01 vs. US$88.15, respectively, owing to better survival rates.
  6. Hence, sexual propagation using Acropora is a cost‐effective method with relatively high survival and growth that can be used in active restoration.

The development of standardized and sustainable aquaculture techniques for the cultivation of marine organisms offers many advantages: it would help reduce the quantity of living material harvested from coral reefs; it could be used as an efficient means of rehabilitating impoverished reef ecosystems (e.g. by reseeding depleted natural stocks of corals); it would provide an educational and research tool for the intensive study of marine animal biology under controlled laboratory conditions. Here, we present the results of aquarium maintenance of 3 Red Sea soft coral species (Clavularia hamra, Nephthea sp., Litophyton arboreum) raised from field collected larvae. Planulae settlement was enhanced when dead coral fragments and stones freshly collected from the sea were added to the settlement dishes. Young colonies (n=106, 258, 60; respectively) were monitored for 307, 475 and 207 days, respectively. The survival rate at the end of the observations ranged between 17% and 30%. Growth rates of colonies differed and showed species-specific variations. The most successful growth was recorded in Nephthea where the average colony size reached 324.5 polyps. Current aquaculture techniques for alcyonarian corals not only reveal that these organisms can thrive in aquaria but also provide significantly improved yields of colonies, as compared with yields under field conditions. Our studies have shown that various steps involved in the cultivation of young corals in captivity may need to be specifically tailored to suit the coral species in question.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Photosynthetic activities of hermatypic corals (28 genera, c . 68 species and c. 92 specimen) were measured in November 2000 at Sekisei lagoon, Okinawa, Japan, using an underwater pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer. Maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) ranged from 0.61 to 0.70 and had an average value of 0.664 (standard deviation [SD], 0.0289). Following the measurement of Fv/Fm, quantum yield (Fm'-F)/Fm' at eight-leveled actinic-light intensities were obtained from all specimens. Values of electronic transport rates (ETR) were nearly the same under low photosynthetic active radiation (PAR; µmol quanta/m2 per s) condition and varied with increasing PAR. The value of ETR at 100 µmol quanta/m2 per s ranged from 21.3 to 30.0 and had an average of 27.8 (SD, 2.09). In August 2001, a coral bleaching event was observed in Sekisei Lagoon. During the event, photosynthetic activities of 21 specimens of eight species (seven genera) were measured. By applying two indicators, Fv/Fm and ETR at 100 µmol quanta/m2 per s obtained in August 2000, 18 of 21 specimens were suggested under the bleaching process. In case of Porites lutea , seven colonies were visually evaluated for their condition of bleaching and were found to have two 'normal', three 'slightly bleached' and two 'heavily bleached'. From the density of zooxanthellae, colonies evaluated 'normal' or 'slightly bleached' did not show an apparent difference. However, they were clearly identified by Fm/Fv and ETR at 100 µmol quanta/m2 per s.  相似文献
