Abstract. The net and coble catch of sea trout in the River North Esk was sampled between 1977 and 1979. A comparison of the length frequency distribution of these samples with those of sea trout taken in a trap which was assumed to be unselective revealed that the net and coble fishery was very selective. Only isolated fish below 35·0 cm were encountered in the commercial catch samples, yet between 25% and 41% of the upstream migratory sea trout taken in the trap during the netting season were below this length. The sea trout in the commercial catch samples were predominantly maiden, one-sea-winter fish. The dominant age class each year was the 2·1 + group, 3·1 + fish comprising the other major age class. The freshwater age of the maiden sea trout sampled declined as the season progressed. The proportion of previously spawned fish in the samples ranged between years from 12% to 15%. The mean length and mean weight of sea trout sampled from each year's catch showed little variation, ranging from 42·9 cm to 43·3 cm and 971 g to 972 g, respectively. The ratio of males to females in the 1979 sample was 1·00:2·18. The use of morphometric characteristics, including head length, pectoral fin length and adipose fin length was investigated with the aim of distinguishing the sex of fish taken early in the season from external features alone. Although in each month the mean head length as a percentage of fork length of males was greater than that of females, this difference was not sufficient to enable the rapid determination of sex during commercial catch sampling routines. The exploitation rate of sea trout reaching the most upstream major fishing station, Morphie Dyke, was estimated from the recapture of upstream adult sea trout removed from a trap and released in the main river 2 km downstream of Morphie Dyke. The percentage exploitation rate at this fishing station was found to range between 6·4% and 12·2%, and the percentage exploitation rate for the entire net and coble fishery was at a level of approximately 30% during the period of the study. The sea trout statistics of the North Esk net and coble fishery for the period 1925–1979 were examined, and the effect of a change in fishing effort on these figures is described. Recent catch figures, although below those reported during the mid-1960s, are above the level of catches reported prior to 1952.  相似文献

This is the first comprehensive study on the occurrence and distribution of piscine reovirus (PRV) in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., caught in Norwegian rivers. PRV is a newly discovered reovirus associated with heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI), a serious and commercially important disease affecting farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway. A cross‐sectional survey based on real‐time RT‐PCR screening of head kidney samples from wild, cultivated and escaped farmed Atlantic salmon caught from 2007 to 2009 in Norwegian rivers has been conducted. In addition, anadromous trout (sea‐trout), Salmo trutta L., caught from 2007 to 2010, and anadromous Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), caught from 2007 to 2009, were tested. PRV was detected in Atlantic salmon from all counties included in the study and in 31 of 36 examined rivers. PRV was also detected in sea‐trout but not in anadromous Arctic char. In this study, the mean proportion of PRV positives was 13.4% in wild Atlantic salmon, 24.0% in salmon released for stock enhancement purposes and 55.2% in escaped farmed salmon. Histopathological examination of hearts from 21 PRV‐positive wild and one cultivated salmon (Ct values ranging from 17.0 to 39.8) revealed no HSMI‐related lesions. Thus, it seems that PRV is widespread in Atlantic salmon returning to Norwegian rivers, and that the virus can be present in high titres without causing lesions traditionally associated with HSMI.  相似文献

Abstract Habitat mapping along 85 km of river was related to juvenile (15 years of electric fishing) and smolt (3 years of screw‐trapping) abundance data to estimate salmon, Salmo salar L., and sea trout, Salmo trutta L., smolt production in the River Sävarån, northern Sweden. Spawning site selection by radio‐tagged salmon (n = 12) and sea trout (n = 4) was also assessed. Fifty‐one hectares of potential spawning and nursery habitat was found in the main stem river, representing 25% of the total river area. These areas were estimated to yield 1300–7580 salmon and 630–3540 sea trout smolts based on juvenile densities, equating with 3 years of screw‐trap data (2990–5080 salmon and 680–2520 trout smolts, respectively). A hypothetical maximum production of about 19 900 salmon smolts was predicted for the river at a density of 40, 0+ salmon 100 m?2. Tracking adults during the spawning period identified optimal and potential reproductive areas.  相似文献

Movement and recaptures of two hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., stocks and landlocked salmon, Salmo salar L., released at different sites in regulated Lake Oulujärvi, were studied in relation to release site. Five groups of fish from each stock were released in approximately equal numbers. Most of the fish released in June and July were recaptured within 3 months, whereas the majority of the fish released in early winter (October and November) were caught the following spring, about 7–9 months after stocking. The release site had a significant effect on recapture rate. The results showed that fishing restrictions targeted mainly at gill net fishing are needed to preserve the stocked fish from overfishing. Significantly fewer recaptures were observed from the landlocked salmon stocking compared with brown trout. The recaptures from the landlocked salmon stocking indicated more active movement and less clumping compared with the two brown trout stocks.  相似文献

Abstract. Stock and catch statistics for a small (5–5ha) lowland put-and-take trout fishery have been used to investigate the relative catchability of brown, Salmo trutta L., and rainbow, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), trout. Brown trout were consistently less vulnerable to fly fishing than rainbows, and were particularly difficult to catch between mid-June and September. As a consequence, the turn-over of rainbow trout stock was more rapid than that of brown trout, but eventual recapture levels of both species were similar at around 90% of the fish stocked. In these circumstances, brown trout could be regarded as a long-term investment for fishery managers, with rainbows providing more'instant'sport.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper collates the results of five surveys which were made to determine the average catch of anglers not making a return at game fisheries. This pilot study shows that the average catch per licence/permit ( ) may be estimated from the average and the proportion of unprompted returns, (mu) and (pu) respectively, by the empirical equation , for trout and sea trout, Salmo trutta L. Salmon, Salmo salar L., catcrl'rates may be best estimated from . Typical values for United Kingdom waters are tabulated for recent seasons. Rod catches of stillwater and migratory fish closely follow the Negative Binomial distribution. Their means and variances are shown to be related empirically by Taylor's power law: for daily records of stillwater trout and migratory fish , and for annual records of salmon , and of sea trout . A method of estimating the expected frequency distribution of catches at any water is shown. The distribution is truncated where the nil catches are not recorded and is censored where the bag is limited; here a microcomputer was programmed to compute the estimates of the mean and variance of the catches and to print the full distribution.  相似文献

The straying rate of ranched Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., into rivers in Iceland was estimated on the basis of coded wire tag recoveries. Out of a total of 15 158 recaptured tagged salmon from the releases between 1987 and 1992, 189 fish (1.3%) strayed into 25 out of the 79 salmon rivers observed. Most of the strayers were found in neighbouring rivers to the ranching stations. There were no significant differences in straying rate between different age classes of salmon returning from the same smolt year class. Generally, there was a delay of 26-27 days in running time between strayers in rivers and salmon returning to the ranching station. Higher straying rates were observed for ranching stations using riverine traps than for stations using estuary traps. By close inspection of seven key rivers in Iceland and assuming a 50% exploitation rate (fishing effort) in the rivers, on average, 2.1% of the returning salmon in ranching were estimated to stray to native salmon rivers over the years. A limitation of using these numbers to estimate geneflow between ranching stocks and wild populations is discussed.  相似文献

The number and the size of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., using the Isohaara fishway was elevated by increasing the fishway discharge and by changing the type of the pass entrance. The fishway is intended to help fish bypass a hydroelectric station located close to the mouth of the large, regulated River Kemijoki, in northern Finland. Multi-sea-winter (MSW) salmon returned to the river mouth during peak flows in early June but did not use the fishway until 1 month later. Their number in the fishway was positively correlated with the tailwater level. One-sea winter (1-SW) salmon, which arrived approximately one month later, started to enter the fishway without corresponding delays. In autumn, a high tailwater level and a small drop at the fish entrance seemed to be needed for the successful passage of these small-sized salmon and sea trout, Salmo trutta L.  相似文献

Abstract. Wild and stocked brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were sampled in the alpine Norwegian Lake Bjornesfjorden by standard net gangs and commercial fishery. Stocked fish comprised about 30% of the total stock. There was no significant difference in spatial distribution and diet between native and stocked fish. Both groups used the littoral zone, and Gammarus lacustris and Lepidurus arcticus were the main food items. Stocked brown trout reached a specific length one year younger than corresponding wild fish. Therefore stocked brown trout entered the commercial catch one year younger than the native fish.  相似文献

The River Soya, Norway, was canalized for agricultural purposes. In order to compensate for damage to the Atlantic salmon, salmo salar L. and brown trout, Salmo trutta L. populations, different weirs were built. The aims of this study were firstly to analyse the effects of weirs covering the river bank and entire river bottom with blasted stones and secondly, to analyse the effects of sediments transported by freshets on the downstream salmon and trout populations after canalization. Restoration of the river bottom with blasted stones provided salmon with more substrate spaces. Densities of trout increased after the river bank was covered with stones. Sediments transported downstream from the canalized river stretch decreased the densities of juvenile salmon and trout.  相似文献

Abstract. Analyses of the Sr-contenl in scales of Atlantic salmon, Salmo saiar L ., smolts from two hatcheries revealed significant ( P < 0·001) differences. These differences were reflected in the Sr-conients of their respective diets. Sr-values in scale samples taken from wild salmon smolts from 10 Norwegian rivers showed a considerable variation. Analysis of variance showed that sampling site was the major source of variation. In general the Sr-content in scales cannot be used to distinguish between hatchery-reared and wild salmon smolls, although the present results nevertheless suggest that such a distinction is possible in some localities.
The Sr-contenl of the vertebrae was somewhat lower than that of the scales in both hatchery-reared and wild smolls. The Sr-conient of the scales of sea trout, Salmo trutta L., smolts from one of the sampling sites was significantly ( P < 0·001) higher than that of scales of Atlantic salmon smolts from the same site. The Sr-content of the scales of all the salmon smolts sampled from a lake was higher than the values recorded for sea trout and salmon after their stay in the sea. Use of the Sr-contenl of the scales todistinguish between migratory and resident individuals should therefore be done with care.  相似文献

Abstract Weekly exploitation rates of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in the River Utsjoki, Finland, were estimated from catch reports during the 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 seasons, and recordings of all Atlantic salmon ascending the river using a submerged video camera array. In all years, mean weekly fishing mortality rates were significantly higher in June than July to August, with a falling trend throughout the fishing season. Owing to overlap in size between one‐sea‐winter (1SW) and multi‐sea‐winter (MSW) salmon, the estimated fishing mortality rates were based on all sea‐age categories combined. By the second week in June, 18.3–34.7% of large salmon (only MSW) had ascended, compared with 2.2–6.4% of small salmon (1SW and some MSW). Indirectly, the earlier start of ascent of large salmon to River Utsjoki indicated that in‐river fishing mortality of MSW salmon is higher than for 1SW salmon. A later opening of the fishing season may be used to reduce the in‐river fishing mortality, especially for the MSW component.  相似文献

A dynamic mark-recapture electric fishing study on sea trout, Salmo trutta L., was carried out from July 1989 to January 1990. There was a significant difference in the recapture probability ( P = R / M ) between small (24–39 cm) and large (40–84 cm) sea trout with P- values of 0.31 and 0.62, respectively (χ2 = 16.52, P < 0.001). The vulnerability-size relationship resulted in a slight overestimation of population size (2.5%) using the Petersen method by adding the two size classes together in the computations. Separate computations for the two size classes had no significant effect upon the estimate of the seasonal length distributions but a significant effect on the estimates of total length distribution ( P < 0.001) and the mean weight of the mature stock ( P < 0.001). The present data emphasises that size-selectivity should be taken into account in electric fishing studies on adult sea trout.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., fry were point and scatter stocked in the early part of June at densities of 63–263 fry 100 m−2 per species in the River Viantienjoki, a small river in northern Finland, and their population densities were assessed in late summer. Both species were always stocked together in similar quantities. Point stocking was used in the first 2 years and scatter stocking in the following 2 years. In point stocking, there was no correlation between the distance from the stocking sites (maximum = 250 m) and parr density in census sites ( r = −0.013 and 0.019 for brown trout and Atlantic salmon, respectively). The stocking density of fry did not influence parr density in August by either method or by species. Stocking density explained only from 11% to 23% of the parr survival depending on the species or stocking method. The mean densities of Atlantic salmon and brown trout parr did not differ significantly from each other at any fishing site ( P > 0.05). Both point and scatter stocking appear to be suitable methods for use in small rivers. The parr densities depend more on the other factors (e.g. habitat quality) than the stocking method, and the choice between methods could be based on the time and labour available.  相似文献

Stocking and fishing effort are two important potentially conflicting factors in fish stock management that require appropriate assessment to ensure a sustainable fishery. In the River Tornionjoki, which discharges into the northern Baltic Sea, a summer‐ascending whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus L., stock has long been a target by traditional dipnet fishing. Enhancement stocking of young whitefish started in the River Tornionjoki in the 1970s after a collapse in catches, with millions of age‐0 whitefish stocked annually in the river, but after about three decades, the stocking rates were considerably reduced. As a result, dipnet catches of whitefish in the Kukkolankoski Rapids rose simultaneously, peaking in the 1980s and 1990s, and then subsequently decreased. There was a significant positive correlation between stocking intensity and catch, both in weight and in numbers, revealing a strong relationship between whitefish releases and dipnet catch. Changes in gillnet fishing effort in the sea affected dipnet catches in weight as well as in mean size of captured whitefish. When the combined effect of stocking and gillnet effort was evaluated, only stocking significantly affected dipnet catches.  相似文献

The accuracy of drift diving surveys of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. and sea trout, Salmo trutta L., was evaluated by comparing the abundance and size distribution with catches in a fish trap over 6 years in the River Etneelva, western Norway. The population count from drift diving accounted for on average 96.3% of the salmon in the trap after accounting for the catches during fishing. Size structure registered during drift diving corresponded with trap catches of salmon, but the number of small salmon (<3 kg) appeared to be somewhat underestimated, while large salmon (>7 kg) were overestimated in drift diving. For sea trout, the match between drift diving counts and trap registrations was poorer (average 76.3%), but may have been affected by the surveys being performed too late with regards to sea trout spawning time. The study illustrates the utility of drift counting for estimating the entire population of anadromous salmonids in a river.  相似文献

Abstract Since the mid‐1980s, water quality has improved in German rivers, and fisheries have recovered. However, it is unsure whether the improvements are sufficient to maintain stocks and angling yield without supplementary stocking. This study examined the development in the local brown trout, Salmo trutta L., stocks and angling yield in the River Wutach following cessation of stocking in 2001, using electric fishing and an angler questionnaire. Natural reproduction was recorded in each year between 2001 and 2007, and a stable stock of trout >20 cm was found. Trout catches by anglers increased after stocking ceased and approximately 60% of the anglers were convinced that stocking was unnecessary to maintain the brown trout stocks or angler catch satisfaction.  相似文献

After many technical measures and restocking activities in the River Rhine, there are now signs of salmonids being able to complete their anadromous life cycle. In Lake IJsselmeer, a former estuary of the River Rhine, the large effort associated with professional fisheries has been used to collect bycatch data on rare, migratory fish. To clarify the function of the lake for salmonids, catch data collected throughout the year between 1995 and 1999 were related to various possible migratory strategies known for these species. Species-specific differences were found in timing, length–frequency distribution and maturity stage reflecting different behaviour of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. ( n =249) and sea trout, S. trutta L. ( n =3962). There was evidence that salmon exhibited traditional anadromous behaviour and use the lake only as a corridor. By contrast, sea trout appears to use the lake both as a corridor and as feeding habitat.  相似文献

Escaped reared salmon, Salmo salar L., were distinguished from wild salmon in the catch of a coastal salmon fishery on the west coast of Scotland. The stomach contents of 54 escaped fish were examined to determine their recent feeding history and 19 (35%) were found to contain food. The predominant prey were juvenile whiting, Merlangius merlangus (L.), unidentified Gadidae and sandeels (Ammodytidae), although other fish and invertebrates, mainly post-larval hermit crabs (Paguridae), were recorded. All these prey are pelagic or semi-pelagic. These observations demonstrate that escaped salmon feed on natural prey in coastal waters and extend our knowledge of the diet of salmon in their marine phase.  相似文献

Abstract. Analysis of 4 years’ club records shows that, on average, the anglers fishing for brown trout in the lower River Don, Aberdeenshire, Scotland made 9 trips/y of 4 hours duration, caught 0·8 fish/trip at the rate of 0·2 fish/h, making a total of 7 fish/season, having an average weight of 350g. There was, however, considerable variation in the results. Guests tended to fish for longer, and to catch less, than regular members. Most (95%) of the fish were caught by only 30% of the anglers, who accounted for 80% of the fishing effort. Angler efficiency increased with the number of seasons spent fishing the club waters during the period; it decreased with increase in water temperature and flow and, early in the season, tended to decrease slightly with increase in catch in the preceding month.  相似文献
