A Comparative Index for Quantifying Growth in Length of Fish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Standard growth curves for bream, roach, chub and dace were constructed using published data for the British Isles. Comparison of length for age of fish from any habitat with these standard curves enables a growth index to be calculated where slow, normal and fast growth give indices less than, equal to and greater than 100, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract– The physical habitat utilization of 7 species of native fishes in a Sonoran Desert stream, Aravaipa Creek, Arizona is described. The species occupied significantly different depths and velocities of water. Longfin dace ( Agosia chrysogaster ), speckled dace ( Rhinichthys osculus ) and loach minnow ( Tiaroga cobitis ) used similar depths and velocities. Two of the three larger species (Sonora sucker [ Catostomus insignis ] and roundtail chub [ Gila robusta ]) used areas of greater depth and reduced velocity. Desert sucker ( Catostomus clarki ) grouped with loach minnow and speckled dace in the velocity of water occupied, but utilized deeper waters. The spikedace ( Meda fulgida ) aligned very closely with desert sucker in use of all 3 physical habitat variables.  相似文献

Approximately 5000 young of the year (0+) cyprinids comprising roach, chub, dace, minnow, bleak, bream, barbel and gudgeon were examined histologically for the presence of myxozoan infections. Thirteen myxozoans were identified to species, the majority being Myxobolus spp. In addition, two species of Myxidium and of Sphaerospora were recorded. All organs were examined, with the majority of infections being found in the gills, musculature and kidney. However, isolated spores were occasionally found in other tissues. Whilst roach contained the highest number of myxozoan species, it was chub that showed the greatest host response to sporogonic forms. Data are provided on spore morphology, pathogenic responses and tissue and host specificity of the myxozoans recorded.  相似文献

Anti-proteinase activity was demonstrated in the seminal plasma of cyprinid fish species (bream, chub, ide, dace, asp, goldfish, roach, common carp) using electrophoretic techniques combined with a detection method based on inhibition of bovine trypsin. We found species-specific protease inhibitors in the seminal plasma of cyprinids. At least three bands of protease inhibitors with different migration rates could be identified by native PAGE. Higher variability was characterized for bands with slower migration rates. Visualization of inhibitors after SDS-PAGE under non-reducing conditions allowed estimation of their molecular weights. Apparent molecular weights were within the range of 51–59 and 47–54 kDa for the bands with slower and moderate migration rates, respectively. The molecular weight of fast migration bands for roach and common carp were estimated to 23 and 30 kDa, respectively. Inhibitors of common carp seminal plasma differed in their affinity toward serine proteases. Three inhibitors in common carp seminal plasma could be visualized using cod and bovine trypsin, but only two inhibitors (of high molecular weight) were recognized with chymotrypsin. There were differences in anti-proteinase activity and seminal plasma protein concentration in relation to the origin of common carp seminal plasma (breeding lines) and time of milt collection (spawning vs. post-spawning season).  相似文献

Abstract – Fisheries data were collected for six species of 0-group cyprinid fishes from eight sites in the lower reaches of the River Trent, England, between May and October 1999 inclusive, using a micromesh seine net. Recruitment and growth patterns were observed via monthly length–frequency histograms and estimations of mean length. In the cases of roach and dace, growth was approximately linear through the summer, before declining in September and October. In the cases of chub and gudgeon, and to a lesser extent bream and bleak, however, there were suggestions of multiple recruitment events. It is argued that some of the fish species examined in the present study adopt fractional or protracted spawning strategies in the lower River Trent.  相似文献

Abstract –  We examined macrohabitat patch level assemblage composition and habitat use patterns of fishes over four seasons in a second-order submontane stream (Danube drainage, Hungary). Rainfall data indicated that our study included both high- and low-water periods, and hence our results may be applicable to broader time scales. Principal component analysis of physical habitat data from 13 macrohabitat patches indicated that these patches represented a riffle-pool continuum. Correspondence analysis of fish assemblage structure data from these patches identified a continuum in assemblage composition that was positively correlated with the habitat continuum. The riffle fauna was dominated by stone loach ( Barbatula barbatula ), whereas chub ( Leuciscus cephalus ) were most abundant in pool patches. We detected little evidence of seasonality in either fish assemblage structure or habitat use. Fish density did not differ significantly among macrohabitat patches in two (summer and autumn 1999) of three seasonal samples, although riffle patches displayed significantly higher fish abundance in late spring 2000. This difference primarily was due to higher abundance of juvenile stone loach in riffles. Two species, stone loach and minnow ( Phoxinus phoxinus ), displayed generalized habitat use patterns, whereas chub and rare species (i.e., gudgeon, Gobio gobio ; dace, Leuciscus leuciscus ; Barbus petenyi ; and burbot, Lota lota ) were significantly over-represented in pool habitats. We hypothesized that pool specialists (i.e., chub and rare species) were responding primarily to the increased depth of these habitats. Nevertheless, our data did not demonstrate the presence of separate pool and riffle habitat guilds. In conclusion, we believe that our understanding of stream fish ecology will be greatly facilitated by use of a 'patch-based approach'.  相似文献

Angling catch data was gathered by a postal questionnaire system from angling clubs holding competitions in three sections of the River Severn over a period of 3 years (1975–78). Angling success was measured as the percentage of anglers taking part that caught fish and as the overall catch rate (g/man/h) of the competing anglers. Species composition of the catch was also recorded. Angling success was closely related to water temperature. Parabolic regressions were fitted to the data. Optimum temperatures for angling success were between 18 and 20°C, except for the Lower Severn section where maximum catch rates were achieved at 14.9°C. Flow had little effect upon angling success until a critical flow was reached, above which success was considerably reduced. Critical flows for the upper, mid and lower sections were approximately 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Ml/day, respectively. Species composition of catches within river sections was influenced by water temperature. Some species (bleak, bream, dace and eels) were relatively more abundant in catches made at high temperatures whilst others (chub and roach) predominated at tow temperatures. It is suggested that the percentage of anglers catching fish is the most reliable indicator of angling success.  相似文献

Abstract. Nearly 2000 marked coarse fish of four species were introduced into a stretch in the middle reaches of the River Derwent. Derbyshire, England in an attempt to estimate the fish population size from catch returns. It was estimated that 800 dace, 1975 roach, 1481 chub and 366 bream were present in the reach and the density of the fish population (0·35 fish m?2) was low. The validity of employing anglers as samplers in a mark-recapture exercise to estimate fish population size in large fisheries is discussed. Angler catch data were collected from angling clubs holding competitions on the Hoveringham Fishery on the lower reaches of the River Derwent over the period 1973/1974 to 1983/1984 to assess the impact of achange in management strategy on the fishery in 1979. Catch rates improved gradually until 1979/1980 when a dramatic increase occurred. This elevated catch rate, in excess of 400 g man-h?1, was maintained and, in recent years, further enhanced (>500 g man-h?1). The improvement was the result of a strong year-class of chub entering the catchable cohort and dominating anglers' catches and not the change in management policy.  相似文献

Understanding trade-offs associated with occupying various aquatic habitats provides a mechanistic understanding of habitat needs that can be used to evaluate the consequences of habitat loss or alteration. We used instream enclosures and field observations to identify how velocity affects the growth rates of four native species in the upper Gila River basin: longfin dace (Agosia chrysogaster) and speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus), two species of no conservation concern, and loach minnow (Tiaroga cobitis) and spikedace (Meda fulgida), two federally endangered species. Elevated velocity was predicted to increase food delivery through drift or stimulation of benthic primary production. Energetic costs of high-velocity habitat were predicted to vary with morphology and behaviour and be lowest for speckled dace and loach minnow because they are adapted to occupy interstitial spaces of the substrate in riffles. Spikedace and longfin dace should perform best in moderate velocities, where the trade-off between exposure to drifting macroinvertebrates outweighs the energetic costs of maintaining position in the water column. Growth rates of loach minnow and speckled dace increased in higher velocities, but contrary to our initial predictions, spikedace growth rates also increased in high-velocity habitats while longfin dace grew fastest in low-velocity habitats; similar to the locations these species occupied based on field observations. These results indicate that for spikedace, the increased abundance of drifting macroinvetebrates in high-velocity habitats outweighs the energy expenditure, but for longfin dace the energetic costs of occupying moderate to high-velocity habitats outweigh the benefit to increased food availability. Our experiment provides a mechanistic understanding of habitat requirements across species and may inform predictions on how modifications or restoration of riverine ecosystems influence native fish diversity.  相似文献
