This experiment was carried out in the framework of a project to develop a viable fish polyculture technology under Bangladeshi conditions that allows simultaneous fish production of small indigenous species for the farmers' family consumption and of large carp species as a cash crop. The objectives of this experiment were to assess the effects of adding punti and mola in different proportions on the large carp and on the environment, and to assess the effects of punti on mola and mola on punti. The polyculture included the large carp rohu, catla and common carp (as cash crop fish), and the small indigenous fish punti and mola (as food for the small‐scale farmer family). The total large carp stocking density was 10 000 fish ha?1, at a species ratio of 1:1:1. The total small fish stocking densities were 0 in the control and 30 000 punti and mola ha?1 in the treatments, these at rates 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2. Stocking punti and mola at the density and all ratios tested were viable solutions to obtain simultaneously large carp cash crops and small fish to feed the farmer's family. Statistically marginal differences in large carp production were obtained in stocking small fish in the different proportions. These marginal differences could be explained by food competition between punti and common carp and between mola and rohu, which had different outcomes depending on the proportions of the small fish stocked. Stocking punti and mola at a 1:1 ratio would result in more small fish for the farmer's family, while the individual size of rohu, the most expensive large carp, would be somewhat smaller, but not necessarily small enough to decrease its selling price. Stocking one of the small fish in higher proportion than the other (2:1 or 1:2) would result in less mola for the family consumption, while harvesting of common carp would be somewhat lower and of smaller fish. Since common carp is the cheapest of the large carps, this small reduction would not necessarily affect the family income in an important way. With these results, farmers would now be able to reorganize their stocking practices with large carps and small fish and decide the appropriate small fish stocking ratios to meet their needs.  相似文献

This experiment was carried out in the framework of a project to develop a viable fish polyculture technology under Bangladeshi conditions that allows simultaneous fish production of small indigenous species for the farmers' family consumption and of large carp species as a cash crop. The objectives of this experiment were to assess the effects on fish performance and on the environment of adding 20% large fish to the basic ‘cash crop’ carp–small fish polyculture consisting of 10 000 fish ha?1 of the large carp rohu Labeo rohita (Hamilton), catla Catla catla (Hamilton) and common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.) at a species ratio 1:1:1, and 15 000 fish ha?1 of each small indigenous fish punti Puntius sophore (Hamilton) and mola Amblypharyngodon mola (Hamilton) (control). The treatment ponds were stocked with additional 2000 large fish ha?1, either all rohu, or all catla, or all common carp, or half rohu and half common carp, or half catla and half common carp. The results obtained and the analysis of interactions through the food web that affect food resource availability of the different fish species and account for the trends and differences observed among treatments confirm the positive effect of common carp on rohu reported in previous experiments and show that a 20% increase in large carps stocking neither affect the survival of the large carps nor reduce harvesting biomass of the small fish for the farmer's family consumption. Increased stocking densities of each large carp species did not significantly reduce its own harvesting weight and mean growth rate, while significantly increased rohu and catla (but not common carp) harvesting biomass and yield. The complex relations between species led to inter‐ and intraspecific competition, which in some treatments increased growth or yield of one species and in other treatments of other species, so that the gains on one species and the losses on the other led to no significant total harvested biomass differences between treatments. Yet, the results herein reported may help farmers to select their species stocking ratios. Thus, if the main target of the farmer is rohu, then a stocking density increase of 10% common carp and 10% rohu would improve rohu growth rate (due to common carp) and result in 50% higher rohu harvesting biomass and yield. If the main target of the farmer is catla, then a 20% increase in catla stocking density would lead to 20% higher catla harvesting biomass.  相似文献

A transparent population modelling approach is used to analyse a large-scale extensive fish culture system, the bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis (Richardson 1845), fishery in a Chinese reservoir. The population model incorporates explicit submodels for density-dependent growth and size-dependent mortality, and allows the assessment of stocking density, seed fish size, fishing mortality (fishing effort), and gear selectivity. The process of model building and parameter estimation from stocking and catch data is described in detail. The full analysis is carried out in computer spreadsheets where all model components are visible and can easily be modified to take account of specific conditions, or to explore different assumptions. The practical use of the model in management decision making is discussed, together with data requirements and the possible need for experimental management.  相似文献

Abstract In less-developed countries, fisheries enhancement using stocking is a common practice to manage reservoirs for biomass production. In many cases, there appears to be little control over whether the stocking activity is appropriate or necessary. Cuban reservoir fisheries have been usually managed to maximize fish biomass. Blue tilapia have been introduced and supplemented in reservoirs, and Chinese carp are introduced and maintained in reservoirs throughout the entire island. Supplemental stocking with introduced fish species is a usual practice to manage large and medium-sized reservoirs. Small and very small reservoirs have been managed as semi-intensively enhanced fisheries with carp and tilapia stocking. The main purposes of the present paper are to study the factors contributing to the outcome of stocking programmes in reservoirs and to test the hypotheses that supplementary stocking for self-sustained fish populations usually cannot contribute to increase fish yield. Yield and stocking data by groups of fish species were available for Cuban reservoirs. Total fish yield was only slightly related to total fish stocking density for the complete set of reservoirs. However, this result was mainly because of the relationship between total yield and cyprinid stocking for semi-intensively-used reservoirs. Tilapia yield was not significantly related to tilapia stocking for both extensively and semi-intensively-used reservoirs. However, yield and stocking for cyprinids were highly related for both reservoir subsets. Therefore, cyprinid stocking was effective in certain reservoirs, but tilapia stocking was not effective in any reservoir. Moreover, tilapia stocking was a superfluous activity for reservoirs where tilapia have an adequate natural reproduction cycle.  相似文献

This paper describes a computer simulation model developed to analyze the economics of shrimp production under different stocking regimes, harvesting schedules, and farm sizes. The operation examined is ‘closed-market’ where all stages of production occur on-site, and the final product, adult shrimp, are sold in the market. The model was parameterized using existing market data and secondary production data collected from experimental units at the Oceanic Institute in Hawaii. Results indicated that a weekly stocking and harvesting regime is more profitable than either a biweekly or 8-week stocking and harvesting regime. Scale economies indicated that the minimum farm size is twenty-six growout ponds and the optimal farm size is 64 growout ponds.  相似文献

This paper provides an overview of the structure and performance of Chinese integrated pond fish farming systems, based on analysis of survey data for 1013 ponds on 101 farms in eight Chinese provinces. A province-by-province examination of gross and net fish yields supports the traditional Chinese classification of provinces into high, medium and low productivity classes according to fish farm output: average net fish yields for surveyed ponds in each class were 7958,4981 and 3321 kg ha?1 year?1 respectively. The paper includes summaries and analyses of data on fish stocking and harvesting, use of feeds and fertilizers, fish-animal integration, capital inputs, and the overall cost and revenue structure in each productivity class. In addition to variations in aggregate input and output levels, a key difference between productivity classes is seen to lie in the stocking model utilized: filter-feeding fish dominate in poorer areas, while ‘feeding fish’ (grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes), black carp, Mylopharyngodon piceus (Richardson), and omnivorous carps) dominate in high-productivity provinces. These results are examined in light of regional differences in culturing tradition, socio-economics, infrastructure, climate and geographical factors.  相似文献

Abstract. Within the framework of a fisheries project in north-east Thailand, project MK/FSPC/069 entitled ‘The Fish Seed Production Centre, North East Thailand’, an assessment was carried out of the ecological impact of introducing exotic fish species (common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), and Chinese and Indian carps). For the assessment, the protocol of Kohler & Stanley (1984) was followed, covering feasibility of introduction, acclimatization potential, potential impact, and control potentials. Regarding the (ongoing) use of the proposed exotic species in aquaculture, it was concluded that so far no clear ecological impact has been reported from escapes to open water; the use of the exotic species has shown to be highly beneficial from a 9 socio-economic point of view. Regarding the proposed introduction of the exotic species into public waters (natural lakes and man-made reservoirs), it was concluded that earlier releases of these species in north-east Thailand did not provoke severe ecological impact in terms of deterioration of aquatic ecosystems. Incidental cases of minor ecological impact were reported for common carp and nile tilapia. Indications were obtained for niche competition between Chinese and Indian carps and indigenous carps, while similar niche competition was concluded for bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis (Richardson), and indigenous pelagic zooplankton feeders. Observing the prolific development of the Nile tilapia in a number of reported cases, it was recommended not to include this species in stocking programmes for public water bodies, until more risk assessments are available.  相似文献

Extensively managed culture fisheries systems in small, communal waterbodies in north-east Thailand were analysed using statistical methods and a simple population model. Villages stocked the waterbodies with a variable mixture of carp species and Nile tilapia, and held annual fishing days where individual fishing was allowed upon payment of a fee to the village. Yields ranged from 26 to 2881 (median 652) kg ha?1 year?1 and were strongly related to the trophic status of the waterbody and to stocking density (with an optimum at 9800 fish ha?1 year?1). Stocking performance varied greatly between species and was also influenced by the trophic status of the waterbody. Catches were dominated by tilapia in the most fertile waterbodies and by carp species in all others, but catch species composition did not significantly influence yield when the effect of trophic status was accounted for. The optimization of stocking regimes is identified as the most promising option to improve village fisheries, on the basis of feasibility and predicted benefit (median increases in yield of 22-75%). Further empirical analyses, possibly combined with experimental management, are suggested to identify optimal stocking regimes.  相似文献

The topography, general ecology, present status and potential for growth and development of the commercial fisheries of the Ganga River System are discussed. Based on studies over about two decades, the evidence gathered shows that the fishery of yesteryear no longer exists. The major carp population has suffered a decline in the post-1961 period, especially in the upper stretches. The average annual yield rate from the Ganga is estimated to have fallen from 52.0 kg/ha in the period 1958–1961 to 50.3 kg/ha, while that of major carps has declined from 16.6 kg/ha to 13.3 kg/ha. The recent fall in quality as well as production of spawn from 3350 million in the nineteensixties to 2595 million in the nineteenseventies is weighed against existing stock-recruitment theories. Causative factors for the decline are analysed and the major carp seed production potential of the system is shown to be much higher than the present level. The decline in the major carp stocks and spawn abundance is attributed to large scale juvenile and spawner exploitation and to habitat degradation brought about by increased water abstraction and regulation, and pollution. The problems impeding development are discussed and management strategies suggested.  相似文献

Reservoir aquaculture has developed in an ad hoc manner in Vietnam to date. A bioeconomic model of reservoir aquaculture in northern Vietnam is presented in this paper to highlight issues of developmental importance of reservoir aquaculture in Vietnam. The biological model is based on a conventional von Bertalanffy growth function and the economic model is a net revenue function. The greatest source of costs for the operation are restocking costs (75%) and contract labor costs (18 percent). Benchmark net revenue is approximately 8.7 million VND (approximately US$539). The stocking density, length of time between stocking and harvest and harvesting efficiency have the largest impact on net revenue. The inclusion of aquaculture into government fisheries development plans with research focused on development of fingerling production, preparation of flooded land for aquaculture production and strengthening institutional arrangements for reservoir leasing and credit arrangements, is likely to lead to increased capitalization and investment, and therefore greater revenues for local fishing populations.  相似文献

Aquaculture is a multifaceted, dynamic food production sector in Europe. The average annual growth rate of aquaculture production in Western Europe was 5.5% between 1988 and 1998, while in Eastern Europe production declined by 56% during the same period. The main growth in aquaculture production has taken place in the marine environment, particularly in the expanding salmon, Salmo salar L., industry of Northern Europe. Inland aquaculture only contributed 19% of the total aquaculture production in 1998. Trout in Western Europe, and common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., in Eastern Europe are the dominant species in inland aquaculture. Inland fisheries production has been stagnant in Western Europe and has declined considerably in Eastern Europe. The importance of recreational fisheries is increasing all over Europe, although no reliable data are available on angler catches. The major interactions between aquaculture and fisheries are pollution by untreated effluents from farms and impacts on indigenous fish stocks. The conflict is decreasing as more advanced systems are used in inland aquaculture, including water recirculation and effluent treatment. The positive benefit of aquaculture is that the sector supports extensive stocking programmes in commercial and recreational fisheries all over Europe.  相似文献

The fish-seed production industry in India has recorded remarkable growth over the last three decades. The hypophysation technique was successfully introduced into India in 1957 and steady progress towards the refinement of the technique has been registered, which has revolutionized carp seed production in the Indian subcontinent. Advancement of carp maturity through brood stock management and multiple breeding has enabled spawn production well ahead of the monsoon and even beyond, ensuring seed availability throughout the year. The quality of seed is an important consideration for commercial aquaculturists. So, partial stock replenishment in carp hatcheries is practised to overcome the problem of inbreeding, which otherwise leads to poor growth of carps. Similarly, gametes of improved stock are cryopreserved and utilized for quality seed production as well as upgrading the brood stock of carps. The gamete cryopreservation protocol for carps is the focus of this review. An attempt has also been made to incorporate information on carp brood stock management, inducing agents, and seed production, including hatchery management.  相似文献

Abstract This experiment was carried out in the framework of a project to develop a viable fish polyculture technology under Bangladeshi conditions that allows simultaneous fish production of small indigenous species for farm families' consumption and of large carp species as a cash crop. The polyculture included the large carp rohu, catla and mirror carp as cash crop fish, and the small indigenous fish punti and mola as food for the small‐scale household. Total large carp stocking density was 10 000 fish ha?1, at a species ratio 1:1:1. Total small fish stocking densities were 0, 25 000 or 50 000 fish ha?1. The objectives were to assess the effects of adding 25 000 punti and/or mola ha?1 on the large carp and environment, and to assess the effects of punti on mola and mola on punti. It was found that catla was not affected by the addition of small fish in any of the combinations tested; rohu was not affected by punti, and mola reduced rohu performance by 30–40% only when punti was not present; mirror carp was not affected by punti, and mola increased mirror carp growth rate and harvesting weight by 25–30% whether punti was present or not; small fish did not significantly affect total yield and food conversion ratio; punti performance was not affected by mola; mola harvesting weight was not affected by punti, while mola harvesting numbers and biomass were reduced by 55–65% by punti. Factor analysis of water quality data identified photosynthesis–respiration and algal biomass– temperature as the main processes governing water quality. Effects of treatment on those water quality factors are analysed, and the fish–water quality relationships discussed. In a parallel polyculture experiment in 25 farm ponds, the performance of large carp species was found to be unaffected by the addition of punti and/or mola. The results indicate that, at the densities tested, punti and mola addition to the large carp polyculture is viable as they do not reduce cash crop production and might be a good food source for the farmer's family.  相似文献

Lake Veere (1750–2050 ha), a brackish water lake in south‐west Netherlands, is a former branch of the Oosterschelde. The lake was closed off by the construction of two dams in 1961. Since the early 1970s Lake Veere has been regularly stocked for recreational and commercial fisheries with rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), brown trout, Salmo trutta L., and glass eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.). Between May and September 1996 an experimental stocking of 18 054 trout of sea trout parentage (15–16 cm; 776 kg) was carried out to study their potential for recreational fisheries. The growth and mortality of the stocked trout were estimated from recaptures in eel fyke nets. The production and consumption of the stocked trout were estimated with a bioenergetics model. After 3.5 years (May 1996–November 1999) the stocked trout measured between 50 and 70 cm. The estimated annual total mortality was 84%. During the winter of 1996–1997, the biomass of the stocked trout reached a maximum of about 1800 kg. By November 1999 the biomass was estimated to be 100 kg. The maximum daily consumption by the trout population was 60 g ha?1 in October 1996 and in June 1997. The total consumption of the stocked trout population over the 3.5‐year period was estimated as 54 244 kg. The analysis suggested that the stocked trout used about 0.2% of the average annual primary production of the lake system. Although the growth and initial production of the population are attractive from the perspective of a recreational fishery, the high mortality and infestation with the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer), are serious drawbacks for a future stocking programme with trout in Lake Veere.  相似文献

Abstract.– Although recent changes in coastal fisheries regulations in several Gulf states have renewed interest in the economic potential for culture of red drum S. ocellatus , few decision making tools with up-to-date information on production economics are available. From 1988 to 1995, estimates of investment costs, equipment specifications and typical input utilization in commercial-scale production were developed from field trials involving complete or partial grow-out of S. ocellatus . Operating costs and expected yields were subsequently estimated based on "best-case" data from a 70-wk production trial in which 5–7 cm fingerlings were stocked on 1 July and grown to marketable size by the following November, thus avoiding a second overwintering period and the associated risks of losses from freezing temperatures. To allow an evaluation of potential returns with earlier or staggered stocking dates, however, growth and mortality rates from the 70-wk trial were used in a computer-based simulation to estimate yields and costs associated with a hypothetical growout period beginning 1 April, deemed the earliest suitable date to avoid fingerling mortality resulting from abrupt or extreme cold temperatures. The April stocking simulation projected a preferred market size of 1.4 kg prior to a second overwintering period, with yield increasing from 3,454 kg/ha to 4,203 kg/ha and a reduction in breakeven costs from $5.97/kg to $5.53/kg. Partial budget analysis, based on a current average market price of $5.72/ kg, suggested April 1 stocking could result in a positive net change of $1,679 per ha over July 1 stocking.  相似文献

The present study investigates the success of stocking fingerlings of Indian major carps ‐Gibelion catla (Hamilton), Labeo rohita Hamilton and Cirrhinus mrigala Hamilton – to enhance fish yield in 58 small reservoirs in Odisha State, India. Fish stocking and yield data were collected from State Fisheries Department, Odisha. The relationships between area, stocking density and fish yield of different size groups of reservoirs were assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). Fish yield increased significantly (p < 0.05, t‐test) from 204 kg/ha/year in 2012–13 to 323 kg/ha/year in 2013–14 due to adoption of CBF. The corresponding per capita fish production increased from 398 kg fisher?1 year?1 to 702 kg fisher?1 year?1 benefitting more than 8,000 fisher households. Reservoirs in the size group 100–500 ha showed the highest response of fish yield with respect to stocking of fingerlings. The size of fingerlings at stocking and area of the reservoir had greater impact on enhancing fish yield. Stocking had a profound positive impact on fish yield. This study forms a baseline evaluation of the impact of stocking on small tropical reservoirs in India. It also recommends management measures and discusses issues, and the way forward for sustainable fisheries enhancement in small tropical reservoirs in eastern India.  相似文献
