Abstract – The residency and movement of stream-dwelling adult (2+ and older) Japanese charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis , were studied by mark and recapture experiments in the Jadani Stream, a headwater tributary of the Tedori River, central Japan, from 1986 to 1989. Of the marked fish, 31.3–58.3% were recaptured in the same pools where they had been caught during the study periods of summer (June–August), autumn (August–November) and winter–spring (November to the next June) and no seasonal movement was observed. The mean distances that the fish moved during the study periods ranged from 139.0 to 502.3 m and many movements longer than 1000 m were observed. Between the resident and the moved fish, there was little difference in body length, growth rate or sex. For the fish that had been resident in the same pools and riffles at previous recaptures, most fish were recaptures in the same locations at the next recapture. Conversely, for the fish that moved previously, most fish were recaptured in different locations from previous sites at the next recapture. These results suggest that Japanese charr exhibit relatively high residency throughout the year, but many fish moved longer distance. The results also suggest the presence of static and mobile components in the charr population.  相似文献

Abstract – During 5–7 October 1999, 16 cichlids (30.5–51.0 cm) were tagged with radio transmitters in the Zambezi River in Namibia (eight threespot tilapia Oreochromis andersonii , seven pink happy Sargochromis giardi and one humpback largemouth Serranochromis altus ). The main objectives of this pilot study were 1) to assess whether and how telemetry can be used to follow the movements of larger cichlids in the upper Zambezi River and 2) to study the movements, habitat preferences and homing behavior of three cichlid species important for subsistence and trophy fishing during a period of increasing water flow towards the rainy period. Nine fish showed a downriver movement immediately after release, believed to be a behavioral response to catch and tagging. From 11 October, only small-scale movements were recorded. Average total distance moved from 11 October to 1 March was 375 m (range=1–1150) for threespot tilapia and 1276 m (range=540–1990) for pink happy. The farthest position compared to the position held on 11 October was on average 220 m away (range=0–500) for threespot tilapia and 538 m (range=20–1500) for pink happy. Displaced individuals did not show homing to the catch site. The threespot tilapia were, on average, located in the main river during 67% of the tracking surveys, in backwaters during 13% and in mouth of backwaters during 20%. The pink happy were, on average, located in the main river during 71% of the tracking surveys, in backwaters during 25% and in mouth of backwaters during 4%.  相似文献

Abstract –  We studied summer movement patterns of creek chubs, Semotilus atromaculatus, in a low-gradient, sand-bottomed stream on the western plains of the United States. Creek chubs were highly associated with patches of cover consisting of wood or macrophytes. Movements among 37 patches in a 1.1-km segment were assessed in a mark-recapture study. Over 2-week intervals, 44% of recaptured fish changed patches. Net distances moved ranged from 4 to 606 m, median distance moved was 49 m. Of fish recaptured repeatedly during the four sampling periods, most (65%) changed patches at least once, but few were consistently mobile. Inter-patch distance was an important variable with a negative effect on creek chub movements. Inter-patch cover was less important, but had a positive effect on movements. Frequent, short-distance movements among habitat patches in summer are a component of the ecology of creek chubs and the spatial arrangement of patches, and intervening stream conditions appear to mediate those movements.  相似文献

Abstract –  Residency and movement of bullheads ( Cottus gobio ) were assessed by mark-recapture from November 2001 to June 2002 in two Flemish rivers [Steenputbeek (SPB), Laarse Beek (LB)]. Although the majority of the recaptured bullheads (SPB: 66%; LB: 55%) was found in their initial tagging site before the spawning season, some fish had covered distances between 10–100 m (mean: 17 ± 2 m) and 10–70 m (mean: 18 ± 7 m), respectively. During the spawning season, the proportion of fish that moved (SPB: 58%; LB: 75%) and the distances travelled (SPB: between 10 and 90 m, mean 26 ± 3 m; LB: between 30 and 260 m, mean 133 ± 3 m) were significantly larger. In addition, analysis of individual movement behaviour of multiple recaptured bullheads showed that some fish were either always resident or mobile, while others switched between both behaviours. In general, our results suggest that not all bullheads exhibit sedentary behaviour but that the populations under study consist of both stationary and mobile individuals.  相似文献

Abstract –  Unlike adult northern pike ( Esox lucius ), small-bodied young-of-the-year (YOY) individuals cannot be tracked by conventional telemetry, and virtually no data exist on their spatial behaviour. Here, we monitored 192 individuals released into a nursery area (0.47 ha, subdivided into 253 cells of 4 m × 5 m) that dried out progressively using a portable passive integrated transponder detector. Among them, 66 spent more than 5 days in the nursery area and were localised at least twice, allowing spatial behaviour analyses. The mean radial distance moved averaged 14.3 m (±8.4 SD, range 2.2–41.0) and the average daily movement was 8.0 m·day−1 (±5.3 SD, range 0.6–31.1). Pike abundance in a cell significantly correlated with the abundance observed in adjacent cells within 32 m, confirming a patchy distribution. A selective use of the deepest area was measured while no effect of vegetation cover was observed at the cell scale. The existence of YOY pike aggregations and the positive correlation between water depth and their spatial distribution might, however, facilitate predation and/or cannibalism during this critical period. This also suggests that the choice of release habitats requires particular attention during restocking procedures.  相似文献

Abstract –  We used radio-telemetry to investigate the movement patterns of river blackfish [ Gadopsis marmoratus (Richardson)] in Armstrong Creek, south-eastern Australia between August and October 2005. Movements of 11 fish were monitored 2–3 times per week during daylight over 48 days and diel movements of six fish monitored hourly for three consecutive days and nights. Most river blackfish displayed little or no movement during the day and were confined to distinct positions in the stream. However, fish moved over significantly larger ranges and moved amongst mesohabitats at night, which would not have been detected using daylight tracking data only. River blackfish most often were located within pools, but they also commonly used riffle and run habitats. We also found that several fish used inundated riparian areas during a flood and two fish made rapid, large movements coinciding with the elevated flows. This study has revealed previously undocumented aspects of the movements and behaviour of river blackfish. The study has also shown the potential for different conclusions regarding the extent of movement by a species depending on the temporal scale and the timing of observations.  相似文献

Abstract –  Common carp ( Cyprinus carpio L.) are a major freshwater invader and knowledge of their movements is important for planning control efforts. To investigate the movement patterns of common carp, radio-tags were implanted into 46 adult fish; 37 near a large floodplain wetland, the Barmah-Millewa forest, and 9 in the Murray River approximately 175 km upstream. Tagged fish were located every second week between August 1999 and March 2001. Common carp occupied total linear ranges (TLR) between 0.4 and 238 km (mean 30 ± 61 km), with 25 fish (62.5%) occupying a TLR < 10 km. Two fish made large distance movements approximately 650 km downstream. Fish sex, the number of locations, time at large, or tagging location explained little variability ( P  > 0.05) in TLR. Monthly distance from release varied from 0.04 to 238 km (mean 15 ± 44 km), and was not significantly related to river discharge and water temperature, but 29 of 31 (93.5%) fish tagged at Barmah moved from the Murray River into adjacent floodplain habitats upon flooding. Five fish (12.5%) moved large distances (>127 km) upstream of the Barmah-Millewa forest. Fourteen fish (35%) showed site fidelity to within 20 m and usually occupied one or two home sites. Twenty-six fish (65%) showed site fidelity to within 100 m occupying up to five sites during the study period. Movement patterns of common carp were complex, and individuals exhibited different strategies, which is typical of invasive species. Efforts to control and potentially reduce common carp populations in regulated river-floodplain environments should target key floodplain access points and over-wintering habitats to reduce adult biomass, spawning and recruitment levels.  相似文献

Abstract – The blue shiner ( Cyprinella caerulea ) is a federally threatened cyprinid that inhabits discrete habitat patches, but whether the fish in these patches represent distinct subpopulations or a continuous population is not known. Movement patterns of adult blue shiners among habitat patches in the Conasauga River (Tennessee and Georgia, USA) were investigated to determine if movement among patches was unrestricted, or if each patch represented a relatively discrete subpopulation. Movement was restricted to a small proportion of individuals at any given time, and most fish that moved did so between adjacent habitat patches. The average distance moved by blue shiners over the two study periods (1997 and 1998) was just 130.7 m. Riffle and glide mesohabitats were not barriers to the dispersal of blue shiners, and fish moved both upstream and downstream in approximately equal numbers. It is suggested that the fish that are mobile at a given time are responsible for recolonization of habitat patches via cumulative, stepwise movements between adjacent patches, and that intervening patches must be present to maintain connectivity of the entire population. Blue shiners exist as relatively discrete subpopulations in the Conasauga River. This finding emphasizes the importance of protecting habitat integrity throughout the entire course of the river to prevent isolation of subpopulations. This species may be used as a model for the conservation of other patch-restricted aquatic species. Note  相似文献

Abstract –  A whole-lake acoustic telemetry observatory situated in eastern Ontario was used to continuously monitor the three-dimensional position of 20 largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ) over a 120-h period during the winter and a separate 120-h period during the early spring. These data were used to evaluate the frequency and stability of associations among fish to provide an understanding of seasonal aggregations and the sociobiology of largemouth bass. The temporal and spatial proximity of each fish relative to the other 19 individuals was assessed and, based on our definition of spatial/temporal proximity (i.e., two fish having an average hourly position <2 m apart), associations were shown to vary among fish, as well as diurnally, daily and seasonally. Associations during the winter were found to be more stable and involved fewer fish than associations during the spring. Of those fish that formed pair aggregations during the winter and spring study periods, male–female pairs occurred more often than male–male and female–female pairs. Our analysis also demonstrated that associations occurred primarily during daylight hours, suggesting that fish may use visual cues to form these aggregations.  相似文献

We examined the interaction between vertical and horizontal distribution of fish larvae off Mejillones Peninsula (23°S), northern Chile, under conditions of active coastal upwelling. An oceanographic survey covered spatial variability in temperature, chlorophyll- a (chl a ), dissolved oxygen, salinity and water density. Fish larvae were sampled during daytime and nighttime periods through two consecutive days in four stations: two inside and two outside of a well-developed upwelling plume, and at three depth strata: 0–20, 20–80 and 80–200 m. Eighteen taxa were analysed, of which the Myctophidae Diogenychthys atlanticus , Diogenichthys laternatus , and the anchovy Engraulis ringens , were most abundant. Our data showed little evidence for diel vertical migration and larvae were more abundant at depth (>80 m) under low temperature (∼12°C) and low chl a (∼2 mg m–3), below the highly advective upper layer. The exploratory K -means analysis allowed the separation of data into two distinct habitats: upwelling and nonupwelling types. Most taxa were allocated in nonupwelling waters, i.e. outside the cold plume. However, short-term variations (<24 h) in the position of the upwelling plume influenced both horizontal and vertical occurrence as well as abundance of taxa, and caused variability in temperature, oxygen and chl a . These changes in oceanographic conditions, caused by upwelling circulation and the dynamics of the cold plume, may sharply modify the habitat of fish larvae and have an important role in survivorship and recruitment success.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Two feeding experiments were conducted to elucidate growth performance of tiger puffer in a 10 m3 water volume closed system. In experiment 1, 1000 fish of 3.5 g average body weight were fed tiger puffer commercial feed twice daily to apparent satiation, 6 days a week for 224 days. Sand-filtered sea water was used and no water was exchanged during the rearing period. Immediately after cutting of lower teeth at day 112, daily feed consumption decreased greatly and 60 fish died in few days. Feeding rates recovered and then decreased gradually as nitrate levels increased from 600–1048 mg N/L. Fish grew to 343 g with 91% survival rate and 87% feed efficiency. Rearing conditions of experiment 2 were similar to experiment 1, except that culture water was exchanged to maintain the nitrate level less than 600 mg N/L during the 224-day experiment. Mortality and reduction of feed consumption occurred immediately after teeth cutting as was observed in experiment 1. Significant reduction of feed intake was not found during other rearing periods. Fish of 3 g grew to 303 g with 91% survival rate and 72% feed efficiency.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Body size dependent distribution patterns of bighand thornyhead Sebastolobus macrochir were examined using bottom trawl surveys in the Tohoku area, off the Pacific coast of northern Honshu, Japan. In northern and southern Tohoku, distribution depths of ≤10-cm standard length (SL) fish increased from 500–600 m in 2003 to 600–700 m in 2005 with an increase in density of 11–20-cm SL fish at depths of 500–600 m. In 2004–2005, small fish (≤10 cm SL) were distributed in deeper waters than large fish (11–20 cm SL). In ≤20-cm SL fish, the main distribution depths changed from 300–600 m in 1997–2002 to 500–600 m in 2003 in southern Tohoku, but not in northern Tohoku. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that negative correlations were found in biomass densities between a few demersal fish species and bighand thornyhead at depths of 300–400 and 400–500 m in southern Tohoku. These results suggest that distribution of bighand thornyhead was affected by intra- and interspecific competitions in the Tohoku area.  相似文献

The long-term behaviour of immature yellowtails, Seriola quinqueradiata , was studied using electronic data-recording tags in Sagami Bay, Japan, during the autumn and early winter. Temperature or depth data were continuously recorded for 5–69 days on six yellowtails. The temperature recorded from the 0-year-old yellowtails showed only small variations (<0.5°C day−1) around the SST on the coast, indicating the 0-years stayed in the immediate coastal area with little horizontal movement. The 1-year-old yellowtail showed larger temperature variations that reached 3°C day−1, which implies distinctly larger horizontal movements than the 0-year-olds. Depth records showed the 0-years stayed around 10 m while the 1-year yellowtail swam in deeper water (mainly 10–30 m) with large variations. The latter often dived to 40 m in the daytime, but shallower than the depth of the thermocline. Both temperature and depth records showed apparent diurnal patterns. Comparing the fish data with environmental conditions, it is suggested that 1-year yellowtails stay close to the coast during the night, move at dawn to feed in the daytime and return at dusk via a frontal zone. In addition, wind stress could change yellowtails' behaviour.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of the blood plasma parameters and the content of microcystins in the tissues of common carp ( Cyprinus carpio L.) in relation to the toxic cyanobacterial water bloom. Fish (average body mass 2176±697 g) in the hypertrophic pond were exposed to natural water bloom (dominated by Planktothrix agardhii, Pseudanabaena limnetica and Limnothrix redekei ), which contained microcystins (concentration in biomass 20–181 μg g−1 dry wt, concentration in water 0.3–9.5 μg L−1). Biochemical parameters in fish blood plasma were analysed in 89 fish at 14-day intervals during the whole season (nine sampling periods). Our results demonstrated high variability and fluctuations in the investigated parameters. The content of microcystins and density of cyanobacterial cells correlated with some haematological indices as lipase, alanine–aminotransferase, albumin, magnesium and chlorides. The concentrations of microcystins in the muscle and liver of the fish (determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometer) were below the limit of detection during the monitored period [0.31 ng g−1 fresh weight (f.w.) for the liver and 0.13 ng g−1 f.w. for muscle]. Our study demonstrates that although known cyanobacterial toxin microcystins were not detected in the fish tissues, several biochemical parameters important for the fish physiology were modulated by natural cyanobacterial bloom.  相似文献

Abstract –  Knowledge of the movements and diel behaviour of the European catfish ( Silurus glanis ), the largest European freshwater fish, is limited to anecdotal information. In a preliminary telemetry study of European catfish, the spring diel movement patterns of five adult catfish were examined. After intraperitoneal insertion of the acoustic tags, the positions of the fish were recorded automatically in the Flix Reservoir (River Ebro, NE Spain). A marked nocturnal mobility pattern was observed throughout the study. During daytime, the catfish were consistently located in the littoral zone and spent extended periods of the day hidden in concealed habitats. Catfish movements were in a radial pattern, with upstream and downstream excursions followed by returns to a previously occupied location. Significant individual variations in movement pattern were observed among the tagged fish and within the 24 h cycle for each fish. Mean instantaneous swimming speed was 0.17 body lengths per second (BL·s−1) at night but 0.09 BL·s−1 during the daytime.  相似文献

Abstract –  Movement and habitat use of river blackfish ( Gadopsis marmoratus R.) was studied in a highly modified central Victorian stream (Birch Creek), Australia, using radio telemetry ( N  = 10) and mark–recapture ( N  = 113) between October 2001 to May 2002, and November to December 2002 respectively. Blackfish had a small home range of 10–26 m with strong affinity to a pool. However, small movements within a pool were common which resulted in relatively large cumulative movements. At a diel scale there were no significant differences in blackfish movement between day and night (Kruskal–Wallis test, P  = 0.95). Six of seven blackfish translocated 40 m upstream or downstream of their original positions returned within 48 h, suggesting strong affinity not only to a pool, but also to a small region within a pool. Blackfish utilised slow flowing (0–20 cm s−1) and deep waters (40–60 cm). Blackfish were strongly associated with the instream cover habitats of undercut banks and boulders. Significant differences were recorded in instream cover and water velocity used by blackfish between day and night (Kruskal–Wallis test, P  = <0.01). At night blackfish used open areas with high water velocities whereas during the day blackfish used complex undercut banks with low water velocities.  相似文献

Abstract  – Movements of adult Atlantic salmon were tracked through a series of four fish passes and an impoundment on the River Conon system, Northern Scotland. Proportions of fish passing individual obstructions ranged from 63 to 100%. The cumulative effect was that only 4 of the 54 tagged fish reached the spawning areas. The fish were delayed for 1–41 days at a pool-and-overfall ladder and 1–52 days at a Borland fish lift. The fish swam through a 10 km long reservoir at 0.21–1.16 km·h−1. A total of 13 fish negotiated a 2.5 km long, 3 m diameter diversion tunnel through a mountain to their home river. High levels of electromyogram (EMG) activity were recorded during ascent of a pool-and-overfall fish ladder, indicating that high energy demanding burst swimming was required.  相似文献

The associations between spiny dogfish ( Squalus acanthias ) and hydrographic variables (temperature, salinity and depth) were examined in the Bay of Fundy and Scotian Shelf from 1970 to 1998. Data were obtained from standard groundfish bottom trawl surveys. Dogfish sex affected habitat associations. Males were found to occupy bottom water of significantly higher salinities and depths than that occupied by females. Length also significantly affected habitat associations. Smaller dogfish occupied relatively deep, high salinity bottom water compared with larger dogfish. Overall, the occupied temperatures, salinities and depths were significantly different from those which were available. Dogfish occupied warmer temperatures along a narrow range (6.62–9.19°C) compared with those which were available (1.57–9.35°C). Occupied salinity (32.70–34.43 ppt) and occupied depth (88.62–184.66 m) were also distributed along a narrower range than available salinity (32.16–34.79 ppt) and available depth (55.00–218.10 m). Sex-specific, length-specific and overall environmental preference by dogfish may bias traditional `offshore' groundfish surveys while large scale changes in hydrographic parameters may alter dogfish distribution and their interactions with other marine fauna.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The swimming behavior trajectory of an Israeli carp (body length 28 cm) during dynamite explosion work was obtained by the long baseline acoustic telemetry system with an ultrasonic pinger in an aquaculture cage located at Chungju Lake on 2 May 1997. The underwater noise levels measured at a distance of 400 m from the source of noise increased by 40 dB (re 1 µPa) compared to the levels before the explosion. The swimming area of the fish was reduced immediately after the explosion but more than 1 h after the explosion the fish had returned to a similar swimming area and behavior as right before the explosion. The fish usually swam less than 1.5 m from the water surface except during or right after the explosion. When there was an external stimulus, such as, an explosion the fish swam downwards. The average swimming speeds of the fish before, during and after the explosion were approximately 0.33 m/s, 0.52 m/s and 0.29 m/s, respectively, and the average swimming speed of the fish during the explosion was 1.6 times faster than usual.  相似文献

Abstract  Fixed location hydroacoustic fish monitoring was carried out at a series of sites in the tidal River Hull, north-east England, in July 1996 during periods of moderate freshwater flows and spring tides. This was followed by a corresponding series during a period of lower freshwater flows and spring tides in autumn 1996. The surveys indicated substantial numbers of fish living upstream and downstream of a depleted oxygen zone which exists in the tidal Hull. Conditions in this zone of poor water quality deteriorated further during low flow periods due to reduced dilution of effluents. Fish populations moved with the tide apparently in response to gradients of dissolved oxygen and salinity. Under conditions of low freshwater flow and high tides, gradients of salinity and oxygen were steeper and fish responses appeared more marked: at higher salinities, the response to increasing salinity overrode the response to decreasing oxygen availability.  相似文献
