Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , were infected with Ichthyophonus sp. and held at 10 °C, 15 °C and 20 °C for 28 days to monitor mortality and disease progression. Infected fish demonstrated more rapid onset of disease, higher parasite load, more severe host tissue reaction and reduced mean-day-to-death at higher temperature. In a second experiment, Ichthyophonus -infected fish were reared at 15 °C for 16 weeks then subjected to forced swimming at 10 °C, 15 °C and 20 °C. Stamina improved significantly with increased temperature in uninfected fish; however, this was not observed for infected fish. The difference in performance between infected and uninfected fish became significant at 15 °C ( P  =   0.02) and highly significant at 20 °C ( P  =   0.005). These results have implications for changes in the ecology of fish diseases in the face of global warming and demonstrate the effects of higher temperature on the progression and severity of ichthyophoniasis as well as on swimming stamina, a critical fitness trait of salmonids. This study helps explain field observations showing the recent emergence of clinical ichthyophoniasis in Yukon River Chinook salmon later in their spawning migration when water temperatures were high, as well as the apparent failure of a substantial percentage of infected fish to successfully reach their natal spawning areas.  相似文献

A challenge model for comparison of the virulence of epizootic haematopoietic necrosis virus (EHNV) to European stocks of redfin perch, Perca fluviatilis L., and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), was tested. The model investigated intraperitoneal (IP), bath and cohabitation routes at 10, 15 and 20 °C for 5–6 g fish and 15 °C for 20 g perch. In the IP challenges of perch, significant mortality occurred at 15 °C and 20 °C. In challenge trials for rainbow trout, significant mortalities were observed in IP and bath challenges at 20 °C. The mortality observed in IP challenged 20 g perch was not significantly different from that recorded for 6 g fish challenged IP. No significant mortality was observed in any other treatment groups. Re-isolation of ranavirus was confirmed by IFAT and was consistently associated with dead or moribund fish in the trial groups challenged with EHNV. The findings indicate that EHNV does not pose a high risk for wild perch and trout populations in Europe by natural exposure. Mortality appears to be primarily a function of environmental factors, with temperature playing an important role, and not just the presence of the virus in the fish.  相似文献

The ciliate protozoan, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis , and the fungus, Saprolegnia parasitica , cause the diseases ichthyophthiriosis and saprolegniosis respectively. Both diseases are difficult to control and can cause high mortalities of freshwater fish, including the Australian silver perch, Bidyanus bidyanus (Mitchell). The efficacy of salt (NaCl) in controlling and preventing these diseases in silver perch was evaluated in aquaria and tanks. Low pH levels were also evaluated as a control for ichthyophthiriosis. Concentrations of 2 or 3 g L−1 salt controlled infestations of I. multifiliis , and fish were free of both theronts and trophonts by day 8 at temperatures of 17.3–21.3 °C and by day 6 at 19.2–23.5 °C. Fish treated with 1 g L−1 salt remained infested and all fish in a control treatment (0 g L−1 salt) died. Although the mean survival rates of infested fish at pH levels of 5 or 6 were only 13.9% and 7.6%, respectively, there were no theronts or trophonts on surviving fish after 12 days. Silver perch harvested from a pond and treated with 2 or 3 g L−1 salt did not become infected with S. parasitica and survival was 100%, whereas 16.6% of untreated (0 g L−1 salt) fish became infected and survival was only 66.7%. A concentration of 2 g L−1 NaCl is recommended for the control of ichthyophthiriosis and the prevention of saprolegniosis in silver perch held in tanks, aquaria and re-circulating aquaculture systems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The lysianassid gammarid Scopelocheirus onagawae , which inhabits temperate shallow waters, was investigated for its digestion time and amount of food intake in feeding experiments with fish paste containing food dye as bait, being compared to those of cold-water species. The specimens were collected in Onagawa Bay, north-eastern Japan, from May through November 2001, using baited traps. The experiment on digestion time was run at 8°C, and the experiment on amount of food intake at 6, 8, 13, 18 and 21°C. Each individual that was fed fish paste was crushed in 3% ammonia–ethanol solution to extract the food dye. After centrifuging, the fluorescence intensity of the supernatant was measured and converted to food intake. Individuals of 0-h non-feeding showed the relative food intake of approximately 1.0%, and those of 24-h non-feeding showed the value of 4.3%. Based on the finding that the satiation ratio ranged from 3.6 to 4.1% for all feeding individuals, this species were considered to digest food completely within 24 h. The satiation ratios were much less than those of cold-water species. Several tens of thousands of S. onagawae were inferred to congregate on carcasses and consume it in a short period after sunset.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Fast skeletal muscles of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus and red sea bream Pagrus major were examined for quantitative and qualitative changes of mitochondrial ATP synthase (FoF1-ATPase) in association with rearing temperatures. The specific activities of FoF1-ATPase from Japanese flounder reared at 10°C, 15°C and 25°C for 4 weeks were determined to be 81 ± 11, 74 ± 13 and 83 ± 11 nmol/min·mg mitochondrial protein, respectively. The corresponding activity from red sea bream reared at 8°C for 5 weeks was determined to be 65 ± 9 nmol/min·mg mitochondrial protein, which was higher than 33 ± 9 nmol/min·mg mitochondrial protein in fish reared at 23°C. The contents of α- and β-F1-ATPase in total mitochondrial proteins were not significantly different between fish reared at different temperatures for the two fish species. However, the contents of β-F1-ATPase in the total fast skeletal muscle extracts, prepared from Japanese flounder reared at 10°C, were 2.1- and 2.9-fold higher than those for fish reared at 15°C and 25°C, respectively. The corresponding content from red seabream reared at 8°C was 2.2-fold higher than that for fish reared at 23°C. Therefore, the changes in FoF1-ATPase depending on rearing temperatures were species-specific.  相似文献

Entrainment and impingement of two non‐salmonid species susceptible to entrainment at irrigation diversions, silver perch, Bidyanus bidyanus (Mitchell), and golden perch, Macquaria ambigua (Richardson), were examined at an experimental intake screen in a laboratory flume under a range of velocities and light levels. The presence of an intake screen significantly reduced entrainment, in some cases reducing mortality from over 90% (unscreened) to less than 2% (when screened). Although some differences in behaviour existed between species, approach velocities (measured 8 cm in front of the screen) up to 0.4 m s?1 effectively reduced entrainment, with very little injury or mortality resulting from incidental screen contacts or impingement. Both species used visual cues to negotiate the screen face, thereby increasing their ability to avoid contact at higher velocities. In the absence of these visual cues, positive rheotactic behaviour was enhanced and fish mostly avoided approaching the screen. These results demonstrate that fish screens operated at approach velocities of up to 0.4 m s?1 have great potential for the protection of silver perch and golden perch juveniles at irrigation intakes.  相似文献

Abstract –  Pacific lamprey, Entosphenus tridentatus , return to streams and use somatic energy to fuel maturation. Body size decreases, the lamprey mature, spawn, and then die. We predicted that warm, summer temperatures (>20 °C) would accentuate shrinkage in body size, and expedite sexual maturation and subsequent death. We compared fish reared in the laboratory at diel fluctuating temperatures of 20–24 °C (mean = 21.8 °C) with fish reared at cooler temperatures (13.6 °C). The results confirmed our predictions. Lamprey from the warm water group showed significantly greater proportional decreases in body weight following the summer temperature treatments than fish from the cool water group. A greater proportion of warm water fish sexually matured (100%) and died (97%) the following spring than cool water fish (53% sexually mature, 61% died). Females tended to mature and die earlier than males, most obviously in the warm water group.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Changes in meat firmness and structure of cultured yellowtail at several storage temperatures, from −1.5°C to 10°C, were compared. Firmness decreased less at −1.5°C and 10°C than at the other temperatures. During storage at temperatures from −0.5 to 4.0°C, expansion of intercellular space, which indicates weakening of the connecting force between muscle cells, began to increase after 8 h storage, and the ratio of space to the whole area increased by 3.4–4.9 times after 24 h of storage. However, at −1.5°C and 10°C, the increase of intercellular space was suppressed, and the ratio was 2.4–2.6 times, even after 24 h storage. Collagen fibrils connecting muscle cells disintegrated after 24 h storage at all storage temperatures. Conversely, in 10°C storage, the fine structure of muscle, except for collagen fibrils, was maintained better than at other storage temperatures. These findings indicate that −1.5 and 10°C storage could maintain fish-meat quality for longer periods than storage at −0.5, 1.0, or 4.0°C, the normal refrigeration temperature.  相似文献

Abstract –  The effects of constant (12, 18, and 24 °C) and cyclical (daily variation of 15–21 and 12–24 °C) thermal regimes on the growth and feeding of Lahontan cutthroat trout ( Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi ) of variable sizes were examined. Higher constant temperatures (i.e., 24 °C) and more variable daily temperatures (i.e., 12–24 °C daily cycle) negatively affected growth rates. As fish mass increased (from 0.24 to 15.52 g) the effects of different thermal regimes on mass growth became more pronounced. Following 14 days exposure to the thermal regimes, feeding rates of individual fish were assessed during acute exposure (40 min) to test temperatures of 12, 18, and 24 °C. Feeding rate was depressed during acute exposure to 24 °C, but was not significantly affected by the preceding thermal regime. Our results indicate that even brief daily exposure to higher temperatures (e.g., 24 °C) can have considerable sublethal effects on cutthroat trout, and that fish size should be considered when examining the effects of temperature.  相似文献

Abstract – Two different Denil fishways on the Grand River, Ontario, were used as check-points to evaluate the upstream movement of fishes past a low-head weir and to examine the proportions and inferred swimming performance of non-salmonid warmwater fishes that used each fishway type. Traps installed at fishway exits were used to collect fish during 24-hour sampling periods, over 40–51 days each year, from 1995 to 1997. Passage rates, size selectivity, water temperature, water velocity and turbidity for the periods of maximum passage for each year were examined. General species composition from trap samples shifted from catostomids to cyprinids to ictalurids to percids and centrarchids, with some overlap, as water temperatures increased from 8 °C to 25 °C in the spring and early summer. Water depths, and therefore water velocities in each fishway, were independent of river discharge due to variable accumulations of debris on upstream trash-racks. Relationships between the water velocity and the swimming and position-holding abilities of several species emerged. Turbidity was directly related to river discharge and precipitation events, and many species demonstrated maximum fishway use during periods of increased turbidity. This study 1) provided evidence of strongly directional upstream movements among several species that were previously considered non-migratory and 2) describes physical and hydraulic conditions during fishway use for 29 non-salmonid fish species.  相似文献
