To understand the ecology of the exotic silver European eel Anguilla anguilla introduced into Japanese waters, the migratory behavior of 106 specimens captured in the coastal waters of Japan between April 1997 and March 2002 was analyzed. Their migratory behavior was apparently correlated with various environmental factors, particularly photoperiod, water temperature, lunar phase, and passage of atmospheric depressions, and was similar to the behavior of the species in European waters. These findings suggest that transplanted European eels retain their ability to respond to environmental cues for seaward migration in similar temperate habitats. The timing of the migration of silver European eels coincided with that of the native Japanese eels A. japonica, suggesting that the silver European eel was synchronized physiologically with the native eel by the same environmental factors.  相似文献

To investigate the presence of non-native anguillid eels in Japanese waters, 141 eels were collected from seven sampling sites throughout the Tone River system. Genetic species identification showed an extraordinary dominance of the non-native European eel Anguilla anguilla in the uppermost site of the study area. Estimation of age from otoliths suggested that the European eels were introduced into the river in the 1990s, corresponding to previous reports from other Japanese water systems. Comparison of the von Bertalanffy growth curve parameters indicated that the European eels caught in the Tone River system appeared to have a similar or even higher growth rate than the same species in the original habitats in Europe. The long-term inhabitation and the normal development of European eels in Japanese waters suggest that regulations prohibiting the release of non-native eels and safeguards against accidental escape from culture ponds must be strictly maintained in order to ensure the conservation of the native Japanese eel.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:    The 78-kDa glucose regulated protein (GRP78), a member of stress proteins, was cloned from a cDNA library of Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas . The analysis on Japanese oyster GRP78 clone of approximately 2.6 kb revealed that the entire open reading frame was 1983 bp long and encoded 661 amino acid residues. At the DNA sequence level, the coding region of Japanese oyster GRP78 gene was 72, 62, and 62% identical to those of chicken GRP78, Japanese flounder HSP70, and Japanese flounder HSC71 genes, respectively. Deduced amino acid sequence of Japanese oyster GRP78 was 84, 62, and 62% identical to those of chicken GRP78, Japanese flounder HSP70, and Japanese flounder HSC71, respectively. Japanese oyster GRP78 contained an 18-residue sequence at the N-terminus that exhibits characteristics of a cleavable signal sequence. It also contained an ATPase domain, and a peptide-binding domain in addition to a Lys-Asp-Glu-Leu (KDEL) peptide motif that is involved in determining endoplasmic reticulum localization. Northern blot analysis showed that GRP78 mRNA was induced with heatshock treatment in the oyster tissues.  相似文献

To learn about the relationships between feeding and growth of temperate eels in freshwater and brackish water habitats, we analysed 533 yellow‐phase Japanese eels Anguilla japonica collected in both types of habitats in southeastern Japan. Because male eels were very rare in each habitat (FW,= 1; BW,= 20), characteristics of female eels were compared between the different habitats. Annual food consumption was evaluated with the consideration of instantaneous food consumption and annual activity period. Stomach fullness index (stomach content weight/body weight) was used as an indicator of instantaneous food consumption. The ratios of number of months with eel catch to those when eel sampling was conducted were used as an indicator of activity period. Female yellow eels tended to be older and slower growing in fresh water (= 78; age, mean ± SD = 7.9 ± 2.4 years; growth rate, 59.8 ± 14.0 mm year?1) than in brackish water (= 229; age, 5.5 ± 1.8 years; growth rate, 90.1 ± 24.4 mm year?1). Irrespective of sex, yellow eels in brackish water had a higher stomach fullness index and a greater ratio of months with eel catches, indicating greater annual food consumption by brackish water eels. These results indicate that greater annual food consumption contributes to the greater growth rates of Japanese eels in brackish water habitats.  相似文献

SUMMARY: The cDNA clones of α-skeletal actins were isolated from the skeletal muscle of two species of rattail fish, Coryphaenoides acrolepis and Coryphaenoides cinereus . The complete nucleotide sequences of the cDNA and their deduced amino acid sequences were determined. Each of the two species had two α-skeletal actin cDNA. The nucleotide sequences of the coding region of the two α-skeletal actin isoform genes within each species had 92.0 and 91.8% homology. From the cDNA sequences of the four α-skeletal actin isoforms in the two species, amino acid sequences of 377 amino acid residues were deduced. It was predicted that the two N-terminal amino acid residues of each protein are processed after translation. The amino acid sequences of α-skeletal actin 1 in the two Coryphaenoides species were identical, as were the amino acid sequences of α-skeletal actin 2 in the two species. The amino acid sequences of the two α-actin isoforms, α-skeletal actin 1 and α-skeletal actin 2, differed by only a single amino acid, Ala/Ser at the 155th position. Northern blot analysis showed that a similar amount of each of the two α-actin isoform mRNA was expressed in the skeletal muscle of the two Coryphaenoides species.  相似文献

This study investigated lipid and protein composition of two river eel available in India, Mastacembelus armatus and Anguilla bengalensis bengalensis, to ascertain their nutritional value. The carnivorous nature of eel makes it susceptible for bioaccumulation and biomagnification of toxic metal in their body; therefore, the measurement of two toxic heavy metals, mercury and arsenic, in the muscle tissues of these two eel species was also determined. The results showed that though the lipid content of both the species was quite low in comparison to European or Japanese eel, the protein content was appreciably high, and the value was quite similar in both species (~24%). The fatty acid profile and amino acid profile of the two species were also determined to quantify the amount of essential fatty acid as well as essential amino acid in their muscle tissue. The amount of total mercury, organic mercury, and arsenic was found to be non-remarkable which indicates the beneficial and safe consumption of these species.  相似文献

Temperate eels Anguilla anguilla (European eel), A. rostrata (American eel) and A. japonica (Japanese eel) are three catadromous species which have been declining since the 1970s/1980s despite their remarkable adaptive capacity. Because of their specific life cycles, which share distant oceanic spawning grounds and continental growth stage, eels are affected by five components of the global change: (a) climate change affecting larval survival and drift, (b) an increase in pollution leading to high levels of contamination exacerbated by their high lipid levels, (c) increasing fragmentation and habitat loss that reduce dramatically the amount of available habitats and induce increased spawner mortality, (d) the appearance of Anguillicola crassus a parasitic alien nematode that impairs spawning success, and (e) the impact of commercial and recreational fisheries for all life stages of eel. In this context, the rapid increases of pressures during the “Great Acceleration” have surpassed the adaptive capacity of eels. This illustrates that cumulative effects of global change can lead to the collapse of species, even in species that have amazingly high adaptive capacities.  相似文献

Abstract –  Modelling-governing patterns of European eel ( Anguilla anguilla L.) distribution of four eel size classes (<150, 150–300, 300–450 and >450 mm) in the Frémur basin (northwest France) was done using artificial neural network (ANN) techniques and ecological profiles. Our results demonstrate the high predictive power of the ANN models. Some macro- and microscale factors, such as distance from the sea, depth and flow velocity, have the most significant influence on the models. Influence of distance from the sea appears to be very different from the spatial organisation usually described in river systems. In fact, the general tendencies of total eel densities according to the distance from the sea showed that densities increase weakly upstream. Another outcome was the variations in habitat preference according to the eel size, even if this species is spread over practically every type of microhabitat. Small eels were mainly found in shallow habitats with strong abundance of aquatic vegetation, whereas large eels tend to be found in intermediate to high depth with small to intermediate abundance of aquatic vegetation. Finally, we hypothesise that European eels change behaviour and microhabitat characteristic preference around a size of 300 mm.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Magnetosensitivity in anosmic Japanese eel Anguilla japonica was examined by conditioning and electrocardiography. Five eels from a freshwater farm in Kagoshima, Japan, were made anosmic by injection of boiling petroleum jelly (130–140°C) into the nasal cavity, a technique widely used in studies on olfaction and olfaction-related behavior of eels. Another five eels were not injected with boiling petroleum jelly and served as controls. Conditioning consisted of exposure of eels to an imposed magnetic field of 192 473 nT. After complete conditioning of the eels, the imposed magnetic field was reduced from 192 473 nT to 12 663 nT during the tests. The control eels showed a significant conditioned response (i.e. slowing of the heart beat) to the magnetic field after one set of conditioning runs. The anosmic eels did not respond to the magnetic field, presumably due to damage of the olfactory organ from the jelly injection. The results suggest that Japanese eels have a magnetosensitive organ in or around the nares. At 1 month after the anosmia treatment, there was no visible trauma to the olfactory lamellae of anosmic eels.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on vitellogenesis in Japanese eel Anguilla japonica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT:   Cultured immature female Japanese eels acclimated to sea water at either 10 or 20°C were treated weekly with salmon gonadotropin fraction (sGTH) in order to investigate the effects of water temperature on artificial induction of ovarian maturation. In eels maintained at 20°C, ovulation was induced in 11 of 18 fish during the experimental period of 13 weeks, whereas at 10°C all fish showed a low gonadosomatic index (GSI) at the end of the experiment. Plasma vitellogenin levels were higher in eels kept at 20°C than in eels at 10°C throughout the experiment. However, no significant differences were observed in the plasma testosterone and estradiol-17β levels between groups. Eels pretreated with sGTHs at 10°C for 13 weeks were separated to two different temperature (10 and 20°C) groups, and received the same weekly sGTH injections. In eels transferred to 20°C, plasma vitellogenin levels, GSI and oocyte diameter were increased, but these values were maintained at low levels in eels that remained at 10°C. These results clearly indicate that water temperature is an important factor regulating vitellogenesis in the Japanese eel.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Tuna tropomyosin is a mixture of nearly equimolar amounts of two isoforms (designated α and β). cDNA encoding the α form was cloned from bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus fast skeletal muscle. The full-length cDNA contained 1220 bp, comprising an open reading frame of 855 bp encoding 284 amino acid residues, flanked by 5'-untranslational regions (156 bp) and 3'-untranslational regions (209 bp). The deduced amino acid sequence showed considerably high homology in a range of 93.7–98.6% to those of other vertebrate α-type tropomyosins. In phylogenetic analysis, bluefin tuna tropomyosin showed the closest relationship with the white croaker counterpart. The predicted mass was 32 919 Da, and isoelectric point was 4.50, assuming acetylation of the N-terminus. By differential scanning calorimetry, bluefin tuna tropomyosin gave two major endothermic peaks at 29.3 and 41.5°C, probably caused by the presence of two isoforms. Circular dichroism spectra supported such a unique denaturation profile.  相似文献

Aquaculture of Japanese eel Anguilla japonica relies upon the natural recruitment of their glass eels (juveniles); however, predation that could influence glass eel recruitment remains unknown. In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the proportion of predation on A. japonica glass eels through stomach content analysis of predatory fishes collected in the estuary region of the Tone River system and its vicinity in Japan. Species of the predated glass eels were identified by DNA barcoding. A total of 270 predatory fishes of 15 taxa was collected over 2 years. The overall proportion of predation on glass eels, genetically identified as Japanese eel, was 0.7%, but this rose to 2.0% when data were limited to fishes caught during the peak months of glass eel recruitment. A glass eel was found in the stomach contents of a channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, an invasive species in this river system, and a blackfin sea bass Lateolabrax latus. These fishes are therefore considered potential predators of A. japonica glass eels. However, as the proportion of predation was low, and the glass eels represented only small proportions of predator stomach contents, further investigation is needed for a better understanding of predation on A. japonica glass eels, and its effects on the early life stages of this endangered species.  相似文献

Trace elemental composition in intermuscular bones of grilled eel fillets was analyzed to discriminate the geographic origin of eel products derived from Japan, China, and Taiwan. The intermuscular bones were decomposed with nitric acid-hydrogen peroxide, and twelve elements (Li, Ti, V, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn, Rb, Sr, Ba, Pb, and U) were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Trace elemental composition including six elements: V, Co, Sr, Ba, Pb, and U, in intermusucular bones were significantly different between Japanese domestic eels and imported eels from China and Taiwan. The average content of lead in Japanese eels was 1/4 to 1/6 that in eels imported from China and Taiwan. The data of elemental content in intermuscular bones were used for linear discriminant analysis, and two discriminant models were constructed. In the Japan–China discriminant model, the discriminant probabilities between Japanese origin and Chinese origin were 82.5 and 93.3 %, respectively. In the Japan–Taiwan discriminant model, the discriminant probabilities between Japanese origin and Taiwanese origin were 87.5 and 87.0 %, respectively. Therefore, trace elemental analysis is effective for country-of-origin identification of eels processed as grilled eel fillets.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   We purified cathepsins B1 and B2 from the ordinary muscle of carp Cyprinus carpio . The N-terminal amino acid sequences (12 residues) of 29 kDa bands of cathepsins B1 and B2 are the same and showed high homology of 75% and 83%, respectively, with the heavy chain of rat and human cathepsins B. Based on conserved sequences of other cathepsins B and the N-terminal amino acid sequences of 29 kDa bands, we cloned carp cathepsin B cDNA. The nucleotide sequence of carp cathepsin B cDNA consists of 1470 bp including a 993 bp open reading frame, encoding a deduced protein of 330 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of carp cathepsin B has similarity of 80% to rainbow trout cathepsin B and of 76–78% to other vertebrate cathepsins B. The sequence of its isoform was also determined during molecular cloning, which has 94.8% similarity with first cloned cathepsin B. They are completely same in N-terminal amino acid sequence of heavy chain, active site and potential N-glycosylation site. This indicates there are at least two kinds of cathepsin B functioning in vivo in carp.  相似文献

Abstract. The occurrence and abundance of eels were investigated in five lowland reservoirs in south-eastern Sri Lanka. Paired fyke nets and longlines were used for sampling eels. Two tropical species of eel. Anguilla bicolor McClelland and Anguilla nebulosa McClelland, were caught. In two of the five reservoirs investigated only A. bicolor was found and in another two reservoirs both species were caught. Eels seemed to be absent from one reservoir. The CPUE in reservoirs with eel was between 0·13 and 2·60 eels of both species per fyke net and night, and the total weight was between 81 and 814g. A small capture-recapture experiment in Badagiriya, where eels seemed to be most plenliful, gave a population estimate of only six eels or 1·2 kg per ha (eels longer than 40cm). Such a low abundance was regarded as unrealistic. Stocks of eel could presumably, at least in some reservoirs, withstand commercial exploitation but more information is needed on recruitment, growth and migration before any advice can be given on the management of stocks.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Estrogen receptor (ER) cDNA was cloned from the liver of common Japanese conger Conger myriaster . Common Japanese conger ER cDNA contains 2543 nucleotides including an open reading frame that encodes 596 amino acids, with a molecular weight of 66.1 kDa. The deduced amino-acid sequence of the common Japanese conger ER shares 85% identity with that of eel Anguilla japonica ER-β, and 39–46% and 53–59% identity with the deduced sequences of ER-α and ER-β of other species, respectively. In a phylogenetic analysis, the common Japanese conger ER was found to cluster with the ER-β of other species. The common Japanese conger ER-β also has six domains (A–F), which are conserved in the nuclear receptor superfamily. The amino-acid sequences in the C and E domains were highly conserved between common Japanese conger ER-β and other ER. However, the other domains showed low homology. In the female common Japanese conger, ER-β mRNA was highly expressed in the liver and pituitary gland. The expression levels of the ER-β gene increased from the oil droplet stage to the primary yolk globule stage and were maintained until the migratory nucleus stage.  相似文献

Abstract –  Since the 1980s, the European eel Anguilla anguilla stock is in steep decline. Lipid reserves are essential to cover energetic requirements for silver eel migration and reproduction. Two large and independent data sets from Belgium and The Netherlands show an average one-third decrease in fat contents of yellow eels over the past 15 years. Also Le Cren's relative condition factor decreased. On the basis of the somatic energy reserves, reproductive potential of eels from various latitudes over Europe was estimated, assuming fat levels in yellow eel are indicative of those in silver eels. Only large individuals, females as well as males, with high lipid content seem to be able to contribute to the spawning stock. The decrease in fat content in yellow eels may be a key element in the stock decline and raises serious concerns about the chances of the stock to recover.  相似文献
