Generalist feeding strategies are favoured in stressful or variable environments where flexibility in ecological traits is beneficial. Species that feed across multiple habitat types and trophic levels may impart stability on food webs through the use of readily available, alternative energy pools. In lakes, generalist fish species may take advantage of spatially and temporally variable prey by consuming both benthic and pelagic prey to meet their energy demands. Using stomach content and stable isotope analyses, we examined the feeding habits of fish species in Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) lakes to determine the prevalence of generalist feeding strategies as a mechanism for persistence in extreme environments (e.g. low productivity, extreme cold and short growing season). Generalist and flexible feeding strategies were evident in five common fish species. Fish fed on benthic and pelagic (or nektonic) prey and across trophic levels. Three species were clearly omnivorous, feeding on fish and their shared invertebrate prey. Dietary differences based on stomach content analysis often exceeded 70%, and overlap in dietary niches based on shared isotopic space varied from zero to 40%. Metrics of community‐wide trophic structure varied with the number and identity of species involved and on the dietary overlap and niche size of individual fishes. Accumulation of energy from shared carbon sources by Arctic fishes creates redundancy in food webs, increasing likely resistance to perturbations or stochastic events. Therefore, the generalist and omnivorous feeding strategies employed by ACP fish may maintain energy flow and food web stability in extreme environments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   This study is concerned with the effect of hyrdated diets on growth and feed performance of Dentex dentex . Three levels of dietary water were tested: 7%, 20% and 40%. For the 7% level a commercial feed was used and the 20% and 40% water levels were obtained after adding an appropriate amount of deionized water to the commercial feed and mixing the pellets well. The diets were offered to fish by self-feeders, by which fish were allowed continuous access to diets after activating the self-feeders; by belt feeders, by which the diets were fed continuously and in excess over a 12 h interval; and by hand to apparent satiation two times a day. After 151 days of feeding, the group fed on the 20%-water diet showed significantly ( P  < 0.05) higher growth rate than the 7 and 40% groups, while no significant differences were observed in feed conversion rate or daily feed consumption. The means of feed delivery did not influence growth rate. Self-feeder, belt and hand feeding all gave comparable growth. Fish fed the more condensed 7%-water diet had smaller stomachs than fish fed the larger volume 40%-water diet. In the stomach, all groups of fish hydrated their digesta within 2 h after feeding to a moisture content of around 60%. Apparently no difference in digestive process was observed between groups. It was concluded that the addition of water in diet at the level of 20% has a beneficial effect on dentex growth.  相似文献

Neotropical floodplains are usually productive systems that are maintained by the nutrient, detritus and sediment inputs provided by the main river channel flood pulse. Ria lakes represent a special feature and habitat in the Amazonian floodplains, being characterised by a dendritic morphology and dependence on terrestrial inputs provided by an intricate stream network. Our objective was to evaluate the trophic ecology of the arapaima (Arapaima sp.). We combined stomach content analysis with measurements of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values from dorsal muscle to infer the ontogenetic changes in trophic level and isotopic niche width in floodplain and ria lakes. Arapaima diet was dominated by fish from low trophic positions. While most of the stomachs sampled in the study ria lake were full, empty stomachs predominated in samples taken in the floodplain lakes. These differences indicate that ria lakes may provide better feeding grounds for arapaima during the dry season, presumably because ria lakes are interconnected with a large stream network and the main river channel year round. Nitrogen stable isotope results further indicated an ontogenetic dietary shift in arapaima, with piscivory increasing as a function of length in both environments. Carbon stable isotope analysis indicated that energy sources used by arapaima varied by environment, with arapaima using a greater diversity of food sources in ria lakes than in floodplain lakes. Information about the main carbon sources is useful for fishery management because stakeholders may choose to conserve key vegetal groups to ensure the productivity and diversity of aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

A shift towards oligotrophic conditions in Lake Michigan has led to concern that altered trophic pathways are leading to lower early life survival and recruitment for Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis). This study evaluated ontogenetic shifts in age-0 Lake Whitefish diets and evaluated how feeding ecology and the amount of food eaten varied with prey abundance and composition at a site in southeastern Lake Michigan during 2014–2017. Although prey densities varied among years, cyclopoid copepods were overall the most abundant prey available. In turn, cyclopoids were the predominant prey item in diets each year, particularly for the smallest larval Lake Whitefish. However, there was a tendency for the importance of cyclopoids to decline somewhat in each diet index as fish grew and other prey such as calanoid copepods, Bosminidae, Daphniidae and/or chironomids increased in importance. High zooplankton abundance, especially high cyclopoid abundance, available to the small size groups of Lake Whitefish (<21 mm) in 2014 was associated with high food mass/fish, high number of zooplankton eaten/fish, and low incidence of empty stomachs compared with 2015–2017. As fish grew, the impact of food abundance on prey consumption diminished somewhat, indicating that the relationship between fish feeding ecology and the prey environment can change quickly with fish size during the early life period.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to test the efficacy of a probiotic (Efinol®L) during transportation of marbled hatchetfish, Carnegiella strigata . Wild specimens were captured from a small stream and transported for 24 h in plastic fish boxes with a probiotic (10 mg L−1) and probiotic-free water. The boxes were sampled at 3, 12 and 24 h of transport. At the end of the experiment, the survival rate was close to 100% in both treatments. Dissolved oxygen diminished with time in both treatments, but the probiotic group had significantly higher levels. Conductivity, pH and ammonia increased significantly during the transport, demonstrating higher levels in the probiotic-free group. Fish from both treatments presented very high net Na+ and K+ effluxes after 3 h of transport. At 24 h, net K+ effluxes in fish of the probiotic treatment reached values close to zero and a significantly lower Na+ efflux was observed. Cortisol levels in both treatments at 3 and 12 h were significantly higher than that in control samples. Higher body cortisol levels were observed in the probiotic-free group than that in the probiotic group at 3 and 12 h. The results demonstrate that addition of a probiotic during fish transport improves water quality and leads to fish presenting a lower stress response intensity.  相似文献

Wax esters (WE) in copepods constitute huge natural marine lipid resources, which can contribute as future lipid source in formulated diets in aquaculture, and thereby reduce the pressure on use of marine resources at higher trophic levels. The present study was undertaken to investigate factors affecting WE digestibility, including production of bile and lipases in Atlantic salmon fed diets containing high proportions of oil derived from copepods. Individually tagged postsmolt Atlantic salmon (initial weight 250 g) were distributed into three dietary groups in triplicate tanks and fed either a fish oil supplemented diet or diets where 50% or 100% of the fish oil was replaced with oil extracted from Calanus finmarchicus . WE accounted for 30.7% or 47.7% of the lipids in these latter diets, respectively. Over the 100 day feeding period, the salmon fed the fish oil diet displayed a significantly higher specific growth rate (SGR; 0.74) than fish fed the 100% Calanus oil diet (SGR; 0.67). The apparent digestibility coefficient of total lipid and total fatty acids was significantly higher in salmon fed the fish oil and the mixed diet compared to fish fed the pure Calanus oil diet. However, the fish appeared to enhance the lipid digestive capacity by increasing bile volume and the lipolytic activity. It is concluded that the digestion of WE in Atlantic salmon is poorer than for triacylglycerols. However, the digestive capacity is increased by elevating the bile content and lipase activity. At very high levels however, WE of lipid between 37.5% and 47.7%, are there no more compensation and WE utilisation decreases.  相似文献

Generalist fish species can feed on a wide resource spectrum and across trophic levels depending on resource availability and trophic interactions. Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) represents a good candidate species to investigate variation in the trophic ecology of generalist fish as it can be found in highly variable fish communities and its resource use is well documented. In this study, we explored the trophic ecology of crucian carp at the individual and population levels using stable isotope and gut content analysis. We tested if trophic resource use varied according to lake productivity, predation risk, intra- and interspecific competition, or individual fish size. We found that crucian carp resource preference was highly variable among and within lakes. In predator-free lakes, small crucian carp occurred in high densities, showed increased interindividual specialisation, and relied mainly on pelagic zooplankton. In presence of predators, large crucian carp occurred in low densities and included greater proportions of benthic macroinvertebrates in their diet. This shift in resource use was further favoured in productive, shallow lakes where littoral prey were probably abundant. Resource partitioning was an important factor determining crucian carp niche use, as fish had higher trophic position in absence of other cyprinids. Crucian carp showed highly dynamic resource use and food preferences in response to variable environmental conditions. Overlooking complex diet preferences of generalist fish may lead to an oversimplification of freshwater community dynamics.  相似文献

Characterization of food web structure may provide key insights into ecological function, community or population dynamics and evolutionary forces in aquatic ecosystems. We measured stable isotope ratios of 23 fish species from the Rio Cuareim, a fifth‐order tributary of the Rio Uruguay basin, a major drainage of subtropical South America. Our goals were to (i) describe the food web structure, (ii) compare trophic segregation at trophic guild and taxonomic scales and (iii) estimate the relative importance of basal resources supporting fish biomass. Although community‐level isotopic overlap was high, trophic guilds and taxonomic groups can be clearly differentiated using stable isotope ratios. Omnivore and herbivore guilds display a broader δ13C range than insectivore or piscivore guilds. The food chain consists of approximately three trophic levels, and most fishes are supported by algal carbon. Understanding food web structure may be important for future conservation programs in subtropical river systems by identifying top predators, taxa that may occupy unique trophic roles and taxa that directly engage basal resources.  相似文献

Stomach contents of 382 channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), ranging in length from 47 to 440 mm collected from farm ponds of Auburn University were examined. Fish in these ponds were fiven supplemental feed 6 days a week. Juvenile catfish below 100 mm fed more actively than other size groups. Channel catfish of all size groups were found to have eaten dipteran larvae and pupae more frequently than other natural food items. Dipterans contributed to a maximum of 47.7% and a minimum of 27.3% in the stomachs of 47–100 mm and 101–200 mm long fish, respectively. Supplemental feed was second in importance among other food items consumed by fish of all size groups. Other food items present in the stomachs in varying quantities were algae, molluscs, micro-crustaceans, coleopterans, trichopterans, fish remains and detritus, thus indicating the omnivorous feeding habit of channel catfish.  相似文献
