Long-term outdoor experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of elevated ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-320 nm) radiation on secondary metabolites (phenolics and terpenoids) and the main soluble sugars (sucrose, raffinose and glucose) in the bark of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) saplings. Saplings were exposed to a constant 50% increase in erythemal UV irradiance (UV-B(CIE); based on the CIE (International Commission on Illumination) erythemal action spectrum) and a small increase in UV-A radiation (320-400 nm) for three growing seasons in an irradiation field in central Finland. Two control groups were used: saplings exposed to ambient radiation and saplings exposed to slightly increased UV-A radiation. Concentrations of sucrose, raffinose and glucose in bark were higher in UV-treated saplings than in saplings grown in ambient radiation, indicating that stem carbohydrate metabolism was changed by long-term elevated UV radiation. Saplings in the elevated UV-A + UV-B radiation treatment and the UV-A radiation control treatment had significantly increased concentrations of certain UV-absorbing phenolics, such as salidroside, 3,4'-dihydroxypropiophenone-3-glucoside, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin compared with saplings in ambient radiation. In contrast, the radiation treatments had no effect on the non-UV-B-absorbing terpenoids, papyriferic acid and deacetylpapyriferic acid. We conclude that plant parts, in addition to leaves, accumulate specific phenolic UV-filters in response to UV radiation exposure.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to test the hypothesis that exposure to solar radiation increases the checking of wood exposed to the weather, and to examine the causes and spectral dependency of such an effect. Lodgepole pine decking samples were exposed outdoors under filters, which blocked selected regions of the solar spectrum while allowing other weathering factors to act on samples. Surface checking in samples was quantified after 12, 24 and 36 weeks of exposure, and the chemical and micro-structural changes occurring at weathered wood surfaces were examined. Check numbers and dimensions were greater in samples exposed under a filter to the full solar spectrum than in samples exposed under filters that blocked the transmission of UV, visible or infrared radiation. Samples that were shielded from more energetic wavelengths developed less checking and also showed less delignification at the exposed wood surfaces. Checks developed at the margins of rays and propagated at the interface between adjacent tracheids, close to the middle lamella. We conclude that exposure to UV and visible light increases the tendency of wood to check during exterior exposure. Our findings point to a link between changes in cell micro-structure as a result of photodegradation of lignin and the development of visible checks in wood exposed outdoors.  相似文献

Forest grazing has been recognised as being a useful tool in fire-risk reduction, in addition to having the potential to preserve or enhance forest biodiversity if managed correctly. Concern for natural regeneration of forest trees in Europe has also prompted interest in the effects of large herbivores on seedling and sapling growth and mortality. An investigation was carried out into sapling damage and density of natural regeneration of oak (Quercus robur) in a mature, pony-grazed, Pinus radiata forest in Galicia, NW Spain under two different grazing regimes (continuous and rotational). In all treatments significantly more oak seedlings and saplings were recorded in areas of grass sward than areas dominated by taller ground flora species. Damage to oak saplings was assessed from the form (height and canopy) relative to stem diameter. The height and average canopy diameter of similar-aged saplings were found to be significantly greater in ungrazed (control) than both continuous and rotationally grazed treatments. Height and canopy diameters of similar-aged oak were not significantly different between the two grazing treatments. Significant differences were observed in tree form, with unbrowsed saplings having the greatest height to canopy width ratio and those in the continuously browsed plots having the smallest. An obvious decrease in the goodness of fit (R2) of regression analyses were found in continuously grazed areas compared to rotational and control plots for both height and canopy data. The differences in damage observed were not significantly different enough to suggest one method of grazing over the other as being better for minimising sapling damage. Management requirements are more likely to dictate grazing regime. Overall, stock density is likely to have a more significant effect on damage than stocking system.

Development of ultra-violet baited traps for control ofAhasverus advena (Waltl. 1832) in poultry farms
The mass reproduction of the parasite beetleAhasverus advena is the reason for its destructiveness in poultry farming stables. The fact that this species is attracted by UV radiation led to the conclusion thatAhasverus advena could be trapped by traps equipped with UV lamps. The best suited type of UV fluorescent lamps was selected according to the attractiveness of the lamps which was investigated in comparative experiments. Using this type of lamps a trap has been constructed. In field experiments the suitability of the traps could be proven. In contrary to the experience from earlier experiments many beetles of the speciesTyphea stercorea were attracted and trapped too.

The effects of simulated acid fog (SAF) and ozone (O3) stress on the growth and physiology of beech (Fagus crenata) saplings were investigated. Three-year-old beech saplings were exposed to SAFs of pH 3 and pH 5 (control) during May 2007 to July 2008. In each SAF treatment group, half of the saplings were exposed to 60 ppb of O3 during September 2007 to July 2008. In comparison to the control saplings, those from the pH 3 treatment had lower total plant biomasses, epicuticular wax amounts, Ca2+ concentrations in their leaves, and lower starch concentrations in their leaves and roots. The effect of O3 was significant only for the starch concentration in the roots, but the O3 exposure also negatively affected the growth and physiology of beech saplings. Results show that acid fog exerts various severe effects, and that both chronic acid fog and O3 exposure suppressed the physiological functions of beech saplings.  相似文献

Frost resistance and subzero temperature effects on photosynthesis, survival and distribution were studied in Euterpe edulis, a tree palm species of the Atlantic Forest, near the southern limit of the species distribution. E. edulis grows under the forest canopy and is absent from forest stands located near bottom valleys. This palm species has been commercially exploited for palm hearts, making it the most important non-timber forest species in North-Eastern Argentina. Its distribution was studied in relation to the frequency and intensity of subzero temperatures along a topographic gradient. E. edulis abundance was higher at the highest site and decreased or became absent towards the lowest site. Subzero temperatures during each of three winter seasons were observed in the lowest site. The medium and high elevation sites never experienced absolute minimum temperatures below 0 °C. Forest structure, fraction of solar radiation transmitted through the canopy and soil water potentials did not change substantially along the gradient. After a low temperature period in winter, the maximum quantum yield in E. edulis leaflets was relatively low in individuals at the low elevation site while having normal values at the medium and high elevation sites. Thermal analysis indicated that E. edulis saplings can supercool down to about −10 °C and do not tolerate extracellular ice formation. Ice formation was observed at about −4 °C, relatively close to the equilibrium freezing temperature, only after an increase in ambient humidity resulted in dew formation on the plant surface. Dew formation is commonly observed in valleys during the winter season. This observation gives further support to the hypothesis that strong infrequent frost events could be an important environmental factor determining the spatial distribution pattern of E. edulis in the Atlantic Forest of Argentina.  相似文献

The variability of virulence within a Québec population of the fungal pathogen Nectria galligena was studied under greenhouse conditions. Preliminary, small-scale inoculation of Betula alleghaniensis saplings confirmed that wounds have to be present for successful infection by N. galligena and showed that saplings held at 10°C exhibited a broader range in necrotic zone length than saplings held at 24 °C for 6 weeks. Results from the inoculation of B. alleghaniensis saplings with eight full-sib progeny sets of four siblings each of N. galligena showed a wide range of virulence in this pathogen. The observed variability was probably of genetic origin since, in seven cases out of eight, one of the four siblings of a given family was significantly different from at least one other sibling of the same family. Inoculation of B. alleghaniensis saplings with a population of 43 isolates originating from different host species and geographical locations further confirmed the variability of virulence within N. galligena but failed to indicate a relationship between virulence and host or geographic provenance. Inoculation of six additional deciduous tree species with a subset of nine isolates showed the polyphagous character of the pathogen, as lesions of comparable length were generally observed on five of the species tested. None of the nine isolates tested induced any necrosis on Fraxinus americana whereas Quercus macrocarpa tended to be slightly more resistant than the four remaining true species.  相似文献

A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the colour stability of chemically treated and thermally modified wood compared to non-modified wood during long term artificial UV light irradiation. One set of wood samples was vacuum-pressure impregnated with alkaline (pH 9.8) copper (II) ethanolamine aqueous solution, while another set of samples from the same wood block was thermally modified at 210°C and −0.90 bar for 2 h. The treated and modified wood samples along with the non-modified ones were exposed to artificial UV light with the wave length in the region of UVA (315–400 nm) and UVB (280–315 nm) intermittently for 500 h. Colour measurements were carried out throughout the irradiation period at an interval of 100 h according to CIEL*a*b* system, where the results are presented in terms of ΔE, ΔL*, Δa* and Δb* values. Better photo-stability in terms of colour changes was recorded for both treated and modified woods compared to the non-modified one. By means of EPR and DRIFT spectroscopic study it was shown that some degree of colour stability of treated and modified woods, achieved during artificial UV light irradiation, resulted from lignin modifications and monomers of phenolic compounds.  相似文献

The oak (Quercus robur L.) regeneration intensity was assessed in the core area of the Białowieża National Park (BNP) in Poland with respect to the selected ecological factors. The emphasis was placed on the response of oak regeneration to disturbances, including the large-scale dieback of spruce stands. Defining their effect could help predicting the role of oak in naturally developing lowland forest ecosystems in the European hemiboreal zone. The results of the study challenge the opinion that the ‘lime-oak-hornbeam forest’ is a ‘climax’ community, confirming a very poor regeneration represented by only two saplings taller than 0.5 m per hectare. By contrast, in spruce-dominated communities, from 49 to 848 taller saplings per hectare were found. The occurrence of saplings was associated with discontinuous canopy of late seral stage of stands, as well as with large gaps. Most of the best quality grown-up oak saplings developed in the immediate neighbourhood of spruce logs. The results of the research indicate that ‘lime-oak-hornbeam forest’ (Tilio-Carpinetum) should be rather perceived as a transient community, evolved from relict, culturally modified, oak woodlands. Because spruce had become a dominating species only after abandoning in mid-1800s the historical regime of anthropogenic disturbances (involving frequent forest fires), the observed phenomena related to the disintegration of spruce stands had probably no precedent over the last 500 years. To confirm whether the massive decline of spruce stands will finally result in the successful establishment of the new canopy oak generation, both in Białowieża and other forests of hemiboreal zone, further research is needed.  相似文献

Natural regeneration measurements are the main silvicultural objective in overaged protective forests of the Bavarian Limestone Alps. While manifold problems with these stands, especially the impact of browsing, are widely recognised, the regeneration niches of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) are insufficiently known. The purpose of this study was to determine favourable combinations of site factors for the development of spruce in small, unfenced canopy gaps, located on Aposerido-Fagetum caricetosum albae forest sites. We recorded the occurrence of spruce saplings (as dependent variable) and of six site factors (as independent variables) on 480 0.5 m2-subplots. In addition, we estimated the coverage of six acid adapted plant species to determine correlations with the humus depth. A binary logistic regression analysis was used to predict the probability of the occurrence of a spruce sapling in dependency of the different site factors. Supported by other studies, we assumed that the supply of solar radiation was adequate for the sufficient regeneration of spruce within the canopy gaps. Other site factors significantly determined the regeneration niches of spruce saplings. More spruce saplings were found near hindrances and on rough surfaces than would be expected from a random occurrence of saplings. These microsite types may have characteristics, especially protection against snow gliding that promotes spruce establishment. A calculated “hindrance index”, which accounted for the number, and the distance of surrounding hindrances might be a good specific value to describe the influence of hindrances on steep slopes. The sapling establishment decreased on thin humus layers. Our assumption for the sites was that thick organic layers might represent a good seedbed for spruce. Decayed dead wood was scarce, but was exceedingly favoured by spruce saplings. Results obtained suggest that the natural regeneration establishment of spruce on steep slopes can be successfully influenced by site factors which inhibit the influence of snow gliding. According to a “positive microsite” concept, we recommend for artificial regeneration measurements with spruce, microsites close to hindrances (e.g. stumps, downed trees) and Vaccinium myrtillus as a predictor for thick, acid humus layers.  相似文献

Sugi green logs with red or black heartwood were smoke-heated, and the changes in the color of the heartwood after ultraviolet (UV) (λ = 365 nm) radiation exposure were then observed. After UV radiation exposure, the redness and yellowness increased in both the red and black heartwoods, whereas the brightness decreased. In the black heartwood, the resulting color turned from yellowish white to reddish brown. Reddening in black heartwood after exposure to a combination of smoke heating and UV radiation is thought to be due to a decrease in brightness and an increase in both redness and yellowness. However, the degree of change in heartwood color by UV radiation exposure was not greatly affected by smoke-heating treatments of various lengths. When methanol extracts were fractionated and exposed to UV radiation, the yellowness increased in the n-hexane-soluble portion and the redness increased in the acetone-soluble fractions from the n-hexane-insoluble portion. These results suggest that the n-hexane-soluble fraction contains the substances that allow heartwood color to change to yellow after UV radiation exposure, and the acetone-soluble-fraction from the n-hexane-insoluble portion contains the substances that allow it to change to red. We compared the physiological and morphological responses of rooted cuttings of Populus trichocarpa Torr. & Gray and P. trichocarpa x P. deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh. grown in either near-ambient solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 280-320 nm) radiation (cellulose diacetate film) or subambient UV-B radiation (polyester film) for one growing season. Midday biologically effective UV-B radiation was 120.6 and 1.6 mJ m(-2) s(-1) under the cellulose diacetate and polyester films, respectively. Gas exchange, leaf chlorophyll, light harvesting efficiency of photosystem II, and foliar UV-B radiation-absorbing compounds (i.e., flavonoid derivatives) were measured in expanding (leaf plastochron index (LPI) 5), nearly expanded (LPI 10), and fully expanded mature (LPI 15) leaves of intact plants of plastochron index 30 to 35. Plants were then harvested and height, diameter, biomass allocation and leaf anatomical attributes determined. Net photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance were significantly greater in mature leaves exposed to subambient UV-B radiation than in mature leaves exposed to near-ambient UV-B radiation. Concentrations of UV-B radiation-absorbing compounds (measured as absorbance of methanol-extracts at 300 nm) were significantly greater in mature leaves exposed to near-ambient UV-B radiation than in mature leaves exposed to subambient UV-B radiation. The UV-B radiation treatments had no effects on chlorophyll content or intrinsic light harvesting efficiency of photosystem II. Height, diameter, and biomass were not significantly affected by UV-B radiation regime in either clone. Leaf anatomical development was unaffected by UV-B radiation treatment in P. trichocarpa x P. deltoides. For P. trichocarpa, leaf anatomical development was complete by LPI 10 in the near-ambient UV-B radiation treatment, but continued through to LPI 15 in the subambient UV-B radiation treatment. Mature leaves of P. trichocarpa were thicker in the subambient UV-B radiation treatment than in the near-ambient UV-B radiation treament as a result of greater development of palisade parenchyma tissue. We conclude that exposure to near-ambient UV-B radiation for one growing season caused shifts in carbon allocation from leaf development to other pools, probably including but not limited to, UV-B absorbing compounds. This reallocation curtailed leaf development and reduced photosynthetic capacity of the plants compared with those in the subambient UV-B radiation treatment and may affect growth over longer periods of exposure.  相似文献

Abstract

There is a growing interest in the effects of deciduous trees on biodiversity, soil processes and long-term productivity in boreal, conifer-dominated forests. This study investigated whether individual birch trees allowed to grow to maturity in the coniferous forest can have a local effect on floristic richness and regeneration of tree saplings. The ground vegetation was compared in 2?m radius plots around the stem under the canopies of matched conifer–deciduous trees in a mature, conifer-dominated forest, and included in the analysis variables that could potentially mediate the tree effect (soil pH, cover of lichens, bryophytes, leaf and needle litter). The field layer vegetation was more species rich under birch (Betula pendula and B. pubescens) than under conifers (Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris), and several vascular plant species (including saplings of tree species) occurred more often under birch than under conifers. However, when the effect of the number of subordinate trees was taken into account the difference between birch and pine was not significant. The number of tree regenerations (saplings) was lowest under pines, but did not differ between spruce and birch. There were no effects of the canopy species on soil pH or on cover of lichens and bryophytes. The difference in diversity may be caused by the different effects of leaf and needle litter, and it is also likely that canopy structure has an influence via interception and throughfall and by affecting the light and microclimate.  相似文献

The pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is the causal agent of pine wilt disease and is transmitted to new host trees by beetles of the genus Monochamus. The increasing interest in imported wood chips from North America for paper production and energy purposes and the corresponding phytosanitary risk of non‐vector transmission of B. xylophilus has been discussed since 1984, the year of the first interception of B. xylophilus in wood chips in the European Union. The long‐term survival of B. xylophilus in wood chips and its non‐vector spread from infested wood chips to non‐infested trees were studied. Pinus sylvestris logs were inoculated with a suspension of B. xylophilus to produce infested wood chips. During the long‐term storage test, B. xylophilus in P. sylvestris wood chips were examined. Four variants, including sealed and openly stored wood chips at both 15°C and 25°C, were studied. For the test of non‐vector spread, B. xylophilus ‐infested wood chips were placed on three‐ to four‐year‐old P. sylvestris saplings under different conditions. Bursaphelenchus xylophilus survived for more than 1 year at both temperatures in the sealed wood chips, which was significantly longer than for the openly stored variant at 25°C. Temperature, tree condition and wood chip location all influenced non‐vector spread through wood chips. Of the 480 trees that were in contact with infested wood chips and showed clear symptoms of pine wilt disease, B. xylophilus were extracted from 42 pines at 25°C and one pine at 15°C. The highest B. xylophilus infestation rates resulting in clear pine wilt disease symptoms (75%) were found in infested wood chips directly attached to stem‐wounded trees at 25°C. However, more variants exhibited B. xylophilus infestation at this temperature; trees with stem or root injuries plus direct contact with infested wood chips to the wounded part were primarily affected. Moreover, non‐vector spread was also detected in stem‐ and root‐injured pines without any direct contact with infested wood chips. Our results confirmed that B. xylophilus can survive for long periods in wood chips and can be transmitted from infested wood chips to damaged trees, but the likelihood of such PWN establishment should be low compared to spread through vectors. These findings must be considered in the pest risk analysis of B. xylophilus, and studies using outdoor trials should be carried out to complete this pest risk analysis.  相似文献

Under natural conditions the zonation of woody species in floodplains is to a large extent determined by hydrological conditions. Flood survival varies even among closely related species of the same genus. Most studies that quantify flood survival of seedlings and saplings of European floodplain species focus on species of the genera Salix and Populus, while few studies on saplings of Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior, Crataegus monogyna have been carried out, and even less on comparing these species groups. We performed a comparative observational study on the presence of saplings (<150 cm) of Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior, Crataegus monogyna (hardwood species), Salix alba, Salix viminalis and Populus nigra (softwood species) in nature reserves along the Lower Rhine in the Netherlands. For each plot (n = 1178) the duration, frequency and depth of inundation was determined. This was done for both the entire year (January–December) and the growing season (March–October). We found that the presence of the hardwoods decreased with increasing inundation duration and even more so if the inundation occurred during the growing season. Contrary to what is generally assumed, the negative effects of flooding were stronger for F. excelsior than for Q. robur. For the hardwood group the total annual inundation duration was the best explanatory variable. The presence of the softwood species increased with increasing inundation duration and more so if the inundation occurred during the growing season. The average duration per inundation event was the best explanatory variable for this group, especially for both Salix species. The presence of P. nigra was best explained by the average inundation depth. A canonical correspondence analysis on species composition was consistent with these findings.Overall, our results agree with the general perspective of tree zonation along rivers. This is the first study that shows the singular and combined effects of several flooding characteristics on both presence, and species composition, of softwood and hardwood species from riparian woodlands. We outline an approach indicating how the results can be used for the selection of sections in retention areas suitable for the recruitment of the studied tree species.  相似文献

Mountain birch (Betula utilis) is the most important treeline species in alpine forests of southwestern China. In order to understand the effects of future warming on treeline birch, this study was conducted to examine the effects of experimental warming on leaf phenology, growth and gas exchange of B. utilis saplings using the open top chamber (OTC) method in a treeline ecotone of eastern Tibetan Plateau. The OTCs enhanced daily mean air temperature by 2.9 K throughout the growing season. Conversely, soil moisture within the OTCs on average declined by 3% over the experimental period. Experimental warming did not affect the timing of bud break, although treeline birch saplings growing in the OTCs manifested later leaf abscission, resulting in longer leaf life span. Artificial warming significantly accelerated the leaf and shoot growth rates of treeline birch saplings, resulting in larger leaf area and longer shoot elongation late in the growing season. Moreover, experimental warming significantly reduced the leaf fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and tended to increase specific leaf area (SLA). Moreover, elevated temperatures significantly enhanced the transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), maximum net assimilation rate (A max), dark respiration rate (R d) and apparent quantum yield (AQY) but did not influence the light compensation point (LCP) and light saturation point (LSP) of treeline birch saplings. Taken together, our results indicated that short-term experimental warming markedly altered structural/functional leaf traits and enhanced photosynthetic capacity of treeline birch saplings; such positive responses in treeline birch would be favorable for the growth of this species under future warmer world.  相似文献

The effects of root damage associated with Phytophthora cinnamomi on water relations, biomass accumulation, mineral nutrition and vulnerability to water deficit were investigated in pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), red oak (Quercus rubra) and holm oak (Quercus ilex) saplings over two years. Comparison was made with sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), a susceptible species to infection by P. cinnamomi, and with a resistant hybrid chestnut (Castanea crenata × C. sativa). Trees were inoculated in 1998 and were subjected to water shortage in 1999. All inoculated sweet chestnuts died before the application of water shortage. Hybrid chestnut, pedunculate oak and red oak displayed low root susceptibility to P. cinnamomi. In these species, water relations, aerial growth and mineral nutrition were slightly affected by inoculation. By contrast, holm oak was the most susceptible oak species to P. cinnamomi as inoculated well‐watered trees displayed the highest root loss (67%) and a 10% mortality. Root loss was associated with a decrease in predawn leaf water potential, a 61% reduction in stomatal conductance, a 55% reduction in aerial biomass, a decrease in leaf carbon isotope discrimination and reduced leaf N and P contents in comparison with controls. In hybrid chestnut and pedunculate oak, water shortage resulted in a similar decrease of predawn leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and aerial biomass in inoculated and non‐inoculated trees. In red and holm oaks, soil volumetric water content of inoculated trees subjected to water shortage remained high. The effects observed in those trees were similar to those of inoculated well‐watered trees and were probably the result of root infection only.  相似文献

The oak decline is known as one of the most destructive complex diseases causing high economic losses around the world, especially in Iran. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the possible role of bacteria as causative agents of oak decline in the Zagros forests of Iran. To do this, stem, root and leaf samples were taken from symptomatic Persian oak trees (Quercus brantii) in different zones of Zagros forests (Ilam Province, Iran). From 150 bacterial isolates, 20 showed pathogenicity against Geranium seedlings. Among 20 hypersensitivity test positive strains, four strains showed pathogenicity against oak saplings. Based on morphological and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, three strains were identified as Bacillus pumilus and one strain as non‐sporulating Gram‐negative Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Pathogenicity studies of different B. pumilus and S. maltophilia strains revealed that they have potential to cause the disease in oak saplings and symptoms of disorder in Persian oak trees. To our knowledge, there are no previous records of B. pumilus and S. maltophilia causing decline on Fagaceous trees like Q. brantii. More detailed field and molecular studies are required to confirm the absolute role of such bacteria in occurrence of oak decline in Zagros forests.  相似文献

A study was carried out on Rosellinia necatrix attack on young woody plants, as possibly affected by selected soil features under three water regimes. Six different soil systems representing five agro‐environments and one forest in the Puglia Region (southern Italy – Mediterranean climate) were compared. R. necatrix attack on sweet cherry trees was simulated using artificial inoculum and saplings of Prunus mahaleb, the most widely used rootstock of sweet and sour cherries, monitored during the spring period. Soil features significantly influenced disease score, which did not differ from one water regime to another, even though disease level in the different soils was affected by water content. Rosellinia mahaleb saplings grown in forest soil showed the highest disease score, which differed significantly from that observed in all the agricultural soils tested in this study. Amongst these, disease score was lower in sandy soils than in soils that were richer in loamy fraction.  相似文献
