We compared responses to drought and re-watering of greenhouse-grown cuttings of Populus x euramericana (Dode) Guinier clones, Luisa Avanzo and Dorskamp. Total leaf area, leaf number, leaf area increment and stomatal conductance were evaluated periodically during a 29-day drought period and for 16 days after re-watering. Soil water content and predawn leaf water potential (Psi(wp)) were measured on Days 29 and 45. On the same days, relative water content (RWC), specific leaf area (SLA), nitrogen, chlorophyll, soluble sugars, total phenols, flavanols and antioxidant activity were determined for leaves taken from the bottom to the top of each cutting. Leaves of Luisa Avanzo cuttings grew more rapidly than leaves of Dorskamp and exhibited higher SLA, but lower concentrations of nitrogen, chlorophyll and soluble sugars and lower antioxidant activity per unit area. On Day 29, after withholding water, both clones had closed their stomata, reduced rates of leaf growth, and lower Psi(wp) and RWC; however, the clones differed in their responses to soil water depletion. Compared to Dorskamp, Luisa Avanzo closed its stomata earlier and maintained higher Psi(wp), but lower RWC and leaf sugar concentrations. Antioxidant activity of leaf methanolic extracts decreased in response to water stress only in Luisa Avanzo. Leaf physiology and its modulation by water stress were age dependent in Luisa Avanzo.  相似文献

Changes in leaf size, specific leaf area (SLA), transpiration and tissue water relations were studied in leaves of rooted cuttings of selected clones of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. subjected to well-watered or drought conditions in a greenhouse. Significant differences between clones were found in leaf expansion and transpiration. There was a significant clone x treatment interaction on SLA. Water stress significantly reduced osmotic potential at the turgor loss point (Pi0) and at full turgor (Pi100), and significantly increased relative water content at the turgor loss point and maximum bulk elastic modulus. Differences in tissue water relations between clones were significant only in the mild drought treatment. Among clones in the drought treatments, the highest leaf expansion and the highest increase in transpiration during the experiment were measured in those clones that showed an early and large decrease in Pi0 and Pi100.  相似文献

To test if some leaf parameters are predictors of productivity in a range of Populus deltoides (Bartr.) Marsh. x P. nigra L. clones, we assessed leaf traits and productivity in 2-month-old rooted cuttings from 31 clones growing in 4-l pots in a greenhouse, under conditions of controlled temperature and optimal irrigation. We evaluated four groups of variables describing (1) productivity (total biomass), (2) leaf growth (total leaf number increment and total leaf area increment rate), (3) leaf structure (specific leaf area and nitrogen and carbon contents) and (4) carbon isotope discrimination (delta), which is negatively correlated with time-integrated water-use efficiency. High-yielding clones did not necessarily display high leaf growth rates, but they displayed a larger total leaf area, lower specific leaf area and lower leaf nitrogen concentration than clones with low productivity. Total leaf area was mainly controlled by maximal individual leaf area and total leaf area increment rate (r = 0.51 and 0.56, respectively). Carbon isotope discrimination did not correlate with total biomass, but it was associated with total number of leaves and total leaf area increment rate (r = 0.39 and 0.45, respectively). Therefore, leaf area and specific leaf area were better indicators of productivity than leaf growth traits. The observed independence of delta from biomass production provides opportunities for selecting poplar clones combining high productivity and high water-use efficiency.  相似文献

Concentrations of solutes, and thus leaf osmotic potential (Psi pi), often increase when plants are subject to drought or sub-zero (frost) temperatures. We measured Psi pi and concentrations of individual solutes in leaves of 3-year-old Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn., E. globulus Labill., E. grandis W. Hill ex Maid. and 29 hybrid clones on a site subjected to both summer drought and winter frost. We sought to characterize seasonal and genetic variations in Psi pi and to determine whether Psi pi or leaf turgor is related to bole volume increment. Leaf osmotic potential at full turgor (Psi pi(100)) was 0.7 MPa more negative in winter than in late summer, and this trend was uniform across genotypes. Soluble carbohydrates were confirmed as key contributors to Psi pi, accounting for 40-44% of total osmolality. The seasonal trend in Psi pi(100) was facilitated by changes in leaf morphology, such as reduced turgid mass:dry mass ratio and increased apoplastic water fraction in winter. Cell wall elasticity increased significantly from winter to summer. Our results suggest that elastic adjustment may be more important than osmotic adjustment in leaves exposed to drought. Although Psi pi(100) was a reasonable predictor of in situ osmotic potential and turgor, we found no relationship between any physiological trait and bole volume increment. Clone-within-family variation in Psi pi(100) was small in both summer and winter and was unrelated to bole volume increment. We conclude that, for the study species, tree improvement under water-limited conditions should concentrate on direct selection for growth rather than on indirect selection based on osmotic potential.  相似文献

Rooted cuttings from three aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clones (216, 271 and 259, classified as high, intermediate and low in O(3) tolerance, respectively) were exposed to either diurnal O(3) profiles simulating those of Michigan's Lower Peninsula (episodic treatments), or diurnal square-wave O(3) treatments in open-top chambers in northern Michigan, USA. Ozone was dispensed in chambers ventilated with charcoal-filtered (CF) air. In addition, seedlings were compared to rooted cuttings in their response to episodic O(3) treatments. Early in the season, O(3) caused decreased photosynthetic rates in mature leaves of all clones, whereas only the photosynthetic rates of recently mature leaves of the O(3)-sensitive Clone 259 decreased in response to O(3) exposure. During midseason, O(3) caused decreased photosynthetic rates of both recently mature and mature leaves of the O(3)-sensitive Clone 259, but it had no effect on the photosynthetic rate of recently mature leaves of the O(3)-tolerant Clone 216. Late in the season, however, photosynthetic rates of both recently mature and mature leaves of Clone 216 were lower than those of the control plants maintained in CF air. Ozone decreased the photosynthetic rate of mature leaves of Clone 271, but it increased or had no effect on the photosynthetic rate of recently mature leaves. Photosynthetic response patterns of seedlings to O(3) treatment were similar to those of the clones, but total magnitude of the response was less, perhaps reflecting the diverse genotypes of the seedling population. Early leaf abscission was observed in all clones exposed to O(3); however, Clones 216 and 259 lost more leaf area than Clone 271. By late August, leaf area in the highest O(3) treatment had decreased relative to the controls by 26, 24 and 9% for Clones 216, 259 and 271, respectively. Ozone decreased whole-tree photosynthesis in all clones, and the decrease was consistently less in Clone 271 (23%) than in Clones 216 (56%) and 259 (56%), and was accompanied by declines in total biomass of 19, 28 and 47%, respectively. The relationship between biomass and whole-tree photosynthesis indicates that the negative impact of O(3) on biomass in the clones was determined largely by lower photosynthetic productivity of the foliage, rather than by potential changes in the carbon relations of other plant organs.  相似文献

Single-node, leafy stem cuttings of Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum. were collected from successive nodes down the uppermost shoot of 2-shoot stockplants. The leaves were trimmed to 10, 50 and 100 cm(2) before the cuttings were set under intermittent mist to root. Batches of cuttings were harvested after 0, 14, 28 and 42 days to assess leaf water potential, dry weight and carbohydrate content of their leaf and stem portions. Cuttings with leaf areas of 10, 50 and 100 cm(2) increased in total dry weight by 29, 61 and 90%, respectively, during the 6-week period. The increase in dry weight was accompanied by increases in reflux-extracted soluble carbohydrates (RSC), water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and starch. By contrast, increase in leaf area reduced leaf water potential of cuttings before root emergence. Fewer large-leaved cuttings rooted than smaller-leaved cuttings, suggesting that rooting ability is at least partially determined by the balance between photosynthesis and transpiration. Fewer roots per cutting were produced on cuttings with 10 cm(2) leaves than on cuttings with larger leaves. Node position affected increments in dry weight, carbohydrate content and leaf water potential, with differences between nodes on day 0 generally being lost or slightly reversed by day 14. Rooting ability was not related to initial (day 0) carbohydrate content, suggesting that rooting is dependent on carbohydrates formed after severance. During the rooting period, the proportions of total non-structural carbohydrate as WSC and starch were reversed, from mostly WSC on day 0 to mostly starch by day 42. These changes in WSC and starch occurred most rapidly in large-leaved cuttings.  相似文献

The influence of shading intensity on growth, morphology and leaf gas exchange of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) seedlings was investigated over a 2-year period. Diurnal gas exchange studies revealed significantly higher carbon gain for leaves grown in 20 or 50% shade compared to leaves grown in 80% shade. Seedlings grown in 20 or 50% shade accumulated significantly more dry weight than seedlings grown in 80% shade during the 2-year study period. Seedlings grown in decreased shade showed decreased leaf size, increased leaf thickness, lower specific leaf area (SLA) and higher stomatal frequency. Less shaded seedlings also allocated relatively more dry matter to roots than shaded seedlings and exhibited a significant reduction in leaf area relative to total plant dry weight (leaf area ratio). Increased leaf number, enhanced branching and shorter internodes resulted in a more compact appearance of less shaded seedlings. Irrespective of light conditions, mangosteen seedlings exhibited inherently slow growth because of low photosynthetic rates per unit leaf area, low SLA, low leaf area ratios and inefficient root systems.  相似文献

Three drought treatments (none, medium and severe) were applied to three container-grown, hybrid poplar clones (Beaupré, Trichobel and Ghoy) as a series of drying cycles over two years-in a greenhouse in 1994 and outside in 1995. Leaf area development, annual biomass production and annual water use were recorded. Clone Beaupré had greater rates of leaf area development (up to 11.8 x 10(-4) m(2) degrees C day(-1)) and subsequently greater dry matter production (up to 816 g tree(-1) year(-1)) and water use (up to 168 l tree(-1) year(-1)) than the other two clones. In all clones, rates of leaf area development, annual biomass production and water use were less under drought conditions than under well-watered conditions. On a proportional basis, the highest reduction in biomass by drought was in Trichobel (up to 74%), whereas, in absolute terms, the reduction was greatest in Beaupré (up to 500 g tree(-1)). However, under drought conditions, annual biomass production was greater in Clone Beaupré than in the other clones. The relationship between water use and biomass production was constant over both years, and was similar for Beaupré and Trichobel at 4.4 g l(-1), but was less for Ghoy at 3.5 g l(-1).  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal photosynthesis patterns were studied in poplar clones Populus tristis Fisch. x P. balsamfera L. cv. Tristis #1 (NC 5260) and Populus x euramericana (Dode) Guiner cv. Eugenei (NC 5326, Carolina poplar) during their first season in the field in a short rotation, intensive culture plantation. Photosynthetic rates were low in immature leaves; increased basipetally on the shoot and peaked in leaves that had recently reached full expansion; and thereafter declined in lower-crown leaves in both clones. Photosynthesis was associated with leaf age and stomatal conductance in immature leaves; adaxial photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and leaf temperature in recently mature leaves; and leaf age and adaxial PPFD in lower-crown leaves. Diurnal photosynthesis patterns within trees were highly variable due to differential light interception among leaves. Results of clonal comparisons of photosynthetic rates were dependent on which leaves were pooled for comparison and how photosynthesis was expressed. Compared to Eugenei, Tristis produced smaller leaves which had higher unit-area photosynthesis rates. The more indeterminate Eugenei outgrew Tristis principally because it more fully utilized the growing season for leaf area production. Photosynthetic production integrated over the growing season was closely related to dry matter production in both clones.  相似文献

Net CO(2) uptake in full sunlight, total leaf area (TLA), projected leaf area of detached leaves (PLA), and the silhouette area of attached leaves in their natural orientation to the sun at midday on June 1 (SLA) were measured for sun shoots of six conifer species. Among species, TLA/SLA ranged between 5.2 and 10.0 (x bar = 7.3), TLA/PLA ranged between 2.5 and 2.9 (x bar = 2.7) and PLA/SLA ranged between 2.0 and 3.7 (x bar = 2.2). These ratios were reflected in the ratios of net photosynthesis computed on the basis of the three measures of leaf area. The much smaller values for TLA/PLA compared with the values for TLA/SLA indicate that leaf orientation effects, or shading, or both, caused more variation in the interception of solar radiation than did variation in leaf geometry (i.e., cross-section). Silhouette leaf area of lodgepole pine, (Pinus contorta spp. latifolia) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) shoots measured at the summer solstice varied almost 2-fold with diurnal changes in solar altitude and azimuth. Sun shoots of both species and shade shoots of lodgepole pine had the greatest SLA during the early morning and late afternoon. The midday decline in SLA was related to the relatively upright orientation of needles of subalpine fir sun shoots and the relatively upright orientation of both sun and shade shoots of lodgepole pine. Shade shoots of subalpine fir reached a maximum in SLA at midday and this was related to the near horizontal orientation both of the shoots and the needles on them.  相似文献

Potted cuttings of three Eucalyptus globulus Labill. clones (AR3, CN44, MP11) were either well watered or subjected to one of two soil water deficit regimes for six months in a greenhouse. Reductions in lateral branching, leaf production and leaf expansion were the leading contributors to the large differences observed in biomass production between well-watered and water-stressed plants. Although no significant differences among clones were observed in dry matter accumulation or in the magnitude of the response to soil water deficits, sensitivity of lateral branching, leaf initiation and whole-plant foliage to water stress was significantly lower in CN44 than in AR3 and MP11. When the confounding effect of differences in plant size resulting from the different watering regimes was removed, allometric analysis indicated that the genotypes differed in biomass allocation patterns. In addition to a drought-induced reduction in leaf number, water deficits also resulted in smaller leaves because leaf expansion was inhibited during dehydration events. Resumption of leaf expansion following stress relief occurred in all of the clones, but was particularly evident in severely stressed plants of Clone AR3, possibly as a result of the osmotic adjustment observed in this genotype.  相似文献

Water stress responses of seedlings of four Mediterranean oak species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Effects of water stress on phenology, growth, stomatal activity and water status were assessed from April to November 1996 in 2-year-old seedlings of Quercus frainetto Ten. (Quercus conferta Kit.), Quercus pubescens Willd., Quercus macrolepis Kotschy (Quercus aegilops auct.) and Quercus ilex L. growing in containers in northern Greece. All four species developed more than 50% of their total leaf area before the beginning of June--an adaptation to arid climates. Well-irrigated plants tended to develop greater individual leaf area, number of leaves per plant, total plant leaf area, height and root:shoot ratios than water-stressed plants, but the difference between treatments was not significant for any parameter in any species. Quercus macrolepis appeared to be the most drought-tolerant of the four species. It maintained the highest number of leaves of the smallest size and increased the proportion of fine roots during drought. In all species, drought caused significant decreases in stomatal conductance and predawn and midday water potentials from mid-July until the end of August, when the lowest soil water content and highest mean daily air temperatures and midday leaf temperatures occurred; however, the responses were species-specific. Among the four species, Quercus macrolepis sustained the highest stomatal conductance despite very low water potentials, thus overcoming drought by means of desiccation tolerance. Quercus ilex decreased stomatal conductance even before severe water stress occurred, thereby avoiding desication during drought. Quercus pubescens had the highest water potential despite a high stomatal conductance, indicating that its leaf water status was independent of stomatal activity. Quercus frainetto was the least drought-resistant of the four species. During drought it developed very low water potentials despite markedly reduced stomatal aperture.  相似文献

Photosynthesis (A), water relations and stomatal reactivity during drought, and leaf morphology were evaluated on 2-year-old, sun- and shade-grown Prunus serotina Ehrh. seedlings of a mesic Pennsylvania seed source and a more xeric Wisconsin source. Wisconsin plants maintained higher A and leaf conductance (g(wv)) than Pennsylvania plants during the entire drought under sun conditions, and during the mid stages of drought under shade conditions. Compared to shade plants, sun plants of both sources exhibited a more rapid decrease in A or % A(max) with decreasing leaf water potential (Psi). Tissue water relations parameters were generally not significantly different between seed sources. However, osmotic potentials were lower in sun than shade plants under well-watered conditions. Following drought, shade plants, but not sun plants, exhibited significant osmotic adjustment. Sun leaves had greater thickness, specific mass, area and stomatal density and lower guard cell length than shade leaves in one or both sources. Wisconsin sun leaves were seemingly more xerophytic with greater thickness, specific mass, and guard cell length than Pennsylvania sun leaves. No source differences in leaf structure were exhibited in shade plants. Stomatal reactivity to sun-shade cycles was similar between ecotypes. However, well-watered and droughted plants differed in stomatal reactivity within and between multiple sun-shade cycles. The observed ecotypic and phenotypic variations in ecophysiology and morphology are consistent with the ability of Prunus serotina to survive in greatly contrasting environments.  相似文献

We investigated sex-related photosynthetic responses to drought in the dioecious species, Populus cathayana Rehd. Plants were subjected to two watering regimes (100% and 30% of field capacity) in a semi-controlled environment. Drought significantly decreased leaf area (LA), total number of leaves (TNL), specific leaf area (SLA), relative water content, net photosynthetic rate (P(n)), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g(s)), intercellular CO(2) concentration (C(i)), light saturation point (L(SP)), apparent quantum yield (Phi), carboxylation efficiency (CE), light-saturated photosynthetic rate (P(max)), maximum efficiency of PSII (F(v)/F(m)) and maximum effective quantum yield of PSII (Yield), and increased the total chlorophyll concentration (TC), CO(2) compensation point (Gamma), non-photochemical quenching coefficient, peroxidase (POD) activity and carbon isotope composition (delta(13)C). Moreover, differences between males and females were detected in many of these responses. In the drought treatment, males exhibited significantly higher LA, TNL, TC, concentration of carotenoids (Caro), P(n), E, g(s), C(i), L(SP), Phi, CE, P(max), F(v)/F(m), photochemical quenching coefficient, POD activity and delta(13)C, but a lower SLA, chlorophyll a/b ratio, carotenoids/total chlorophyll ratio and Gamma than females. However, Caro, L(SP), Gamma, Phi, CE and POD activity were apparently associated with sex-related resource demands, because significant differences in these traits were detected between the sexes under well-watered conditions. Our results indicate that drought stress limits photosynthetic capacity more in females than in males.  相似文献

Light and soil moisture availability are two important abiotic factors influencing plant growth in an agroforestry system. Different soil moisture and light treatments were applied to examine the combined impact of drought and shade on the morphological plasticity of Vitex negundo var. heterophylla (Chinese chastetree) and Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (Spine jujube). We found that the interaction of light and soil moisture was orthogonal in the two species. V. negundo captured irradiance efficiently with relatively long petiole and petiolule, while Z. jujuba maintained higher branches to absorb light than V. negundo. Compared to the seedlings under full sunlight, the palmately compound leaves of V. negundo under low light showed larger specific leaf area (SLA), lower ratio of leaflet length to width and higher leaf mass ratio (leaf biomass to total biomass); in contrast, the simple leaves of Z. jujuba under low light showed larger SLA and ratio of leaf length to petiole length. In both species, drought reduced the branch number, mean internode length of stem, and increased root mass ratio (root biomass to total biomass), but leaf morphology showed little variation to the decreased soil moisture. Between the two species, V. negundo is more shade-tolerant, while Z. jujuba is more drought-tolerant. In an alley cropping system, the spacing can be smaller in the V. negundo-crop system than the Z. jujuba-crop system when soil moisture is adequate. However, the V. negundo-crop system should be managed with more caution under the soil moisture limited conditions.  相似文献

Isoprene emissions were studied in one-year old sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) seedlings during nine drying-rewatering cycles extending over five months. Each drying cycle lasted to the point of leaf wilting. Growth was essentially stopped in response to the first drying cycle, though seedling survival and capacity to recover turgor on rewatering remained high throughout the entire nine cycles. Photosynthetic rates of leaves were inhibited by the drying treatments. Under severe drought, isoprene emission rates of leaves were also inhibited, though isoprene emission was generally less sensitive to drought than photosynthesis. The lower drought sensitivity of isoprene emission compared with photosynthesis resulted in a higher percentage of fixed carbon lost as isoprene as seedlings became more stressed. During the recovery phase of the drying-rewatering cycles, isoprene emission rates in several seedlings were higher than in well-watered control seedlings. Following the ninth drying-rewatering cycle, sustained daily watering resulted in recovery of isoprene emission rates to control values within four days. Photosynthetic rates only recovered to 50% of control values after seven days. We conclude that the mechanisms regulating photosynthetic rate and isoprene emission rate are differentially influenced by limited water supplies. The results are consistent with past studies that predict a protective role for isoprene emission during stress, particularly protection from excessive leaf temperatures during drought.  相似文献

We compared the growth and physiological responses of cuttings of Populus kangdingensis C. Wang et Tung and P. cathayana Rehder originating from altitudes of 3500 m and 1500 m, respectively, when exposed to three ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation regimes: zero UV-B, ambient (4.5 kJ m(-2) day(-1)) and twice-ambient (9 kJ m(-2) day(-1)) biologically effective UV-B radiation for one growing season, to determine if Populus trees that are adapted to contrasting UV-B habitats exhibit different tolerances to enhanced UV-B radiation. Compared with cuttings grown without UV-B radiation, twice-ambient UV-B radiation significantly decreased total biomass, total leaf area and internode length in both species, whereas root/shoot ratio, leaf number, amount of photosynthetic pigments and ascorbate peroxidase activity were unaffected. Differences in responses were also observed between the study species. Cutting height increment, total biomass, total leaf area, free proline concentration and membrane damage assessed by electrolyte leakage were significantly more affected by the twice-ambient UV-B radiation in P. cathayana than in P. kangdingensis. However, specific leaf mass, amount of UV-B absorbing compounds and superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase activities increased more with increasing UV-B radiation in P. kangdingensis than in P. cathayana, perhaps reflecting important characteristics of species with low to moderate tolerance to UV-B radiation. Overall, the results indicated that P. kangdingensis, which originates from altitudes of 3500 m, has greater tolerance to enhanced UV-B radiation than P. cathayana originating from altitudes of 1500 m.  相似文献

By propagating lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) cuttings in vivo, we obtained after 7 growing cycles (ca 3.5 years) in a greenhouse, sufficient number of cuttings from most families to establish clonal progeny tests. Twenty-one full-sib families with approximately 20 clones per family were studied for five years. Years when cuttings were set, families within latitude and clones within families differed significantly in rooting percentages, with the variance components 4.2%, 8.2% and 9.5%, respectively. One way to get a frequent and uniform rooting is to take cuttings from non-leading shoots since they have higher rooting percentage than leading shoots. Neither total length of the cuttings nor length of the primary needles were significantly correlated to rooting percentage. With appropriate management of the ortets and the cuttings during rooting, most clones could be included in a cutting propagation program.  相似文献

Eucalyptus globulus Labill. seedlings grown under field conditions in Portugal were watered either daily (control) or every 6 days (drought-treated). Relative to those of control plants, rates of leaf production and leaf biomass accumulation were reduced by almost half in drought-treated plants. However, whereas expansion of new leaves on control plants slowed toward the end of the 30 day experiment, expansion of leaves of the same age on drought-treated plants accelerated as a change in weather conditions resulted in midday plant water potentials above -3.0 MPa. In plants that were left unwatered until they wilted and were then watered daily, expansion of the fifth leaf pair from the apex was slower than that of the same pair of leaves of plants watered daily throughout; but it continued for about twice as long and resulted in the same final leaf area. Drought treatment also caused a substantial reduction in the rate of leaf production, which, in part, accounted for the effect of drought on leaf biomass production. In a greenhouse study, witholding water for 15 days had only a slight effect on the length or width of adaxial epidermal cells, and the effect was quickly reversed on rewatering.  相似文献
