Patterns of lateral shoot growth following decapitation in 1-meter tall, rooted Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum. cuttings varied with clone and in response to a range of environmental conditions and growth regulator treatments. Two phases of bud activity were identified, the Sprouting Phase, in which many buds were released from correlative inhibition, and the Dominance Phase (starting 3-4 weeks after decapitation) in which uppermost laterals began to dominate and suppress growth, and sometimes cause apical abscission of lower lateral shoots. Except in non-erect plants, the most distal lateral to elongate became the new leading shoot. During the Sprouting Phase, the proportion of active buds was increased by removing leaves from the upper part of the stem, and by reducing the photoperiod from 13-15 h to 11 h, particularly at 20 degrees C rather than 25 degrees C. Conversely, the proportion of sprouting buds was decreased by injecting plant stems with NAA (250 microg/plant). During the Dominance Phase, suppression of lateral shoot growth was hastened by stem injection with GA(3) (200 microg/plant), especially when applied to the uppermost shoot at the end of the Sprouting Phase. Reimposition of dominance was delayed, however, by (1) high rates of N:P:K fertilization, (2) low temperature (20 versus 25 degrees C) under relatively long days (13 and 15 h), (3) low photon flux density (160 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) and (4) severe defoliation. Plant orientation had no effect on bud activity of decapitated plants, but affected the relative vigor and orientation of new lateral shoots. High temperature (25 versus 20 degrees C) and injection with GA(3) increased the erectness of newly developing lateral shoots.  相似文献

Stem length and leaf area of current-year shoots were measured in saplings of eight broad-leaved evergreen tree species growing under a forest canopy. Stem length varied over a range of one to two orders of magnitude within each species. In all species, both the number of leaves and the mean stem length between successive leaves were greater in longer shoots. Mean leaf size and stem length were not correlated in six of eight species, and only weakly positively correlated in the other two species. Thus, total leaf area per stem increased with stem length, but not in direct proportion: leaf area per stem length was smaller in shoots with long stems and larger in shoots with short stems. I conclude that the within-species variation in the leaf-stem balance of current-year shoots is related to variation in shoot functional roles, as has been observed for long and short shoots in many deciduous tree species: shoots with long stems are extension oriented and contribute to the framework of the crown, whereas shoots with short stems serve mainly for leaf display. Among species, large differences were found in the leaf area per stem length ratio. In the species with larger leaf area per stem length ratios, leaves had narrower blades or longer petioles, or both, resulting in a reduction of mutual shading among the leaves on the shoot.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the rooting ability and the growth performance of juvenile single-node leafy stem cuttings of Litsea monopetala (Roxb) Pers. collected from two mature mother trees preserved in the hill forest of Chittagong district, Bangladesh. The rooting ability of cuttings was studied under 0%, 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.4% indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) treatments. Significantly better rooting response (p ≤ 0.05) was observed with 0.1% IBA compared to control (0% IBA). The mean number of roots and the length of the longest root of cuttings in different treatments showed no significant difference (p≤0.05). After transfer into polythene bags from non-mist propagator, rooted cuttings treated with 0%, 0.1% and 0.2% IBA demonstrated the highest (100 ± 0.00%) survival capacity. The mean number of shoots developed in cuttings in the polythene bags in first three weeks varied significantly (p≤0.05) among the treatments. Effects of three fertilizer treatments, viz. T0 (no fertilizer), T1 (10g Urea, 20g TSP, 10g MOP dissolved in 1 L water) and T2 (10g Urea, 20g TSP, 10g MOP dissolved in 2 L water) on initial growth ofstecklings were also measured over a 90-days period. The increment of leaf area of stecklings was significantly higher (p≤0.05) under T0 compared with that under T1 and T2 while the increment of stem length, collar diameter and root biomass varied insignificantly among different fertilizer treatments. The results suggest that rooting juvenile single-node leafy stem cuttings could be an effective mean of regenerating L. monopetala. The application of 0.1% IBA concentration is recommended for rooting of juvenile leafy stem cuttings and application of fertilizer appeared unnecessary for the subsequent growth of stecklings in polythene bags.  相似文献

The effects of shoot defoliation, decapitation, and disbudding on carbon mobilization were investigated in rooted cuttings of Populus maximowiczii x nigra L. 'MN9'. Ten days after complete shoot defoliation or decapitation, the stem starch concentration of treated plants declined to one-half that of intact plants, and there were similar or greater reductions in the concentrations of glucose, fructose, sucrose, galactose, and shikimic acid. Partial shoot defoliation (50%) and complete disbudding had no effect on stem starch concentration, but stem sucrose concentration was reduced in all treatments. Sucrose depletion preceded and may have induced other changes in the carbon status of plants subjected to leaf or shoot removal. Four days after shoot decapitation, the sucrose concentration of roots of treated plants was reduced to 25% of that of intact plants. However, the concentrations of fructose and glucose increased in the roots of treated plants and was followed by the accumulation of shikimic acid, salicyl alcohol, unknown compound A and salicin. The possible role of increased concentrations of root organic solutes in the water relations and regrowth process of decapitated plants is discussed.  相似文献

Willow buffer strips are a promising vegetated filter for the reduction of non-point source pollution from agricultural land to watercourses resulting from the rapid growth of shoots and from the large amount and distribution of roots. A greenhouse experiment tested the hypothesis that a new planting method, planting cuttings horizontally, exhibited more biomass production and more effective filter than did planting cuttings vertically. Due to the different times taken for shoots break through the soil surface, the summed height of all shoots of horizontally planted cuttings was significantly smaller than that of the vertical ones at the beginning of the growth period. The difference in the height of all of the shoots between planting orientations decreased with time. After 16 weeks growth, the biomass of the stem, leaves and fine roots was not affected by the planting orientation. The coarse root biomass was larger in the horizontal treatments and decreased with increased density. The total biomass, as well as the biomass of stem or leaves, of each treatment, increased with increased planting density. The individual plant biomass, as well as that of the stem or leaves, decreased with increased planting density. Compared with the unplanted control treatment, the planted treatments significantly reduced the total-N, NO3-N, PO4-P and SO4-S leaching. The planting orientation did not affect the nitrate leaching. The horizontally planted cuttings were slightly more effective for reducing the SO4-S leaching and the vertically planted cuttings were slightly more effective for reducing the PO4-P leaching. Lower PO4-P leaching was observed only with higher planting density. With regard to the horizontal planting method, further studies are needed to explore the influence of different willow clones, the size of cuttings, pre-planting treatments, planting geometry (configuration) and soil conditions on survival, the number of shoots produced, the biomass production and the amount and distribution of roots.  相似文献

The present study investigates optimal conditions for the vegetative propagation of Himalayan yew Taxus wallichiana Zucc., an important medicinal tree, during spring. Effect of four treatments: (a) sex of donor plant (male and female), (b) age/type of shoot (1, 2, 3 year old, long and dwarf shoots), (c) auxin treatment (IBA and NAA at 0, 0.5, 1.25, 5.0 & 50.0 mM) and (d) rooting environment (raised beds/polythene bags) on percentage rooting in stem cuttings was studied. Randomized complete block (RBD) designs were used for experimentation. Rooting ability of cuttings was significantly influenced by all these treatments. The overall rooting response was higher in long shoot cuttings taken from female tree. Age of shoot also influenced the rooting response and was highest in 1 year old long shoot cuttings of female tree. Exogenous application of auxin, α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and indole-3 butyric acid (IBA), had significant positive effect on the percentage rooting. IBA significantly enhanced the rooting percentage in 1 year old long and dwarf shoots at lower doses and 2 and 3 year old long shoots from female tree at higher doses. Maximum percent rooting (90% ± 2.8) was obtained with interactive effect of 0.5 mM, NAA (22 h) × 1 year old long shoot from female tree; followed by the interactive effect of 50 mM IBA (5 s) × 3 year old long shoot from female tree (83% ± 4.1). Cuttings planted in soil: sand medium in polythene bags showed earlier rooting response (12 weeks) than cuttings planted in raised nursery beds (24 weeks). Overall, the findings of this study suggest that 0.5 mM IBA treatment is suitable for enhancing adventitious rooting in 1 year old long and dwarf shoots of male and female trees. IBA at higher doses is suitable for enhancing the rooting percentage of 2 and 3 year old long shoots from female tree. This study provides a significant lead towards the development of a simple and inexpensive technique for large scale propagation, aforestation of elite genotypes and raising of bush type plantation under ex-situ conditions.  相似文献

Survival, growth, plant structure and insect damage of in vitro‐derived cuttings from two Salix clones (5. schwerinii and 5. viminalis) were compared in a field trial with performance of conventional cuttings of the same clones. No obvious morphological abnormalities were induced by in vitro treatment. The survival rate of in vitro‐derived cuttings of the S. schwerinii clone was much higher than that of conventional cuttings. In the 5. viminalis clone, height growth was slightly but significantly reduced for in vitro‐derived cuttings compared with conventional cuttings although stem basal area and estimated plant dry weight were unaffected. The number of stems per cutting, the number of side shoots per stem and gall midge damage did not appear to be affected by the type of cutting. Electrophoretic analysis of 12 enzyme systems revealed identical isozyme patterns for m vitro‐derived and conventionally propagated plants.  相似文献

Applied auxin, node position, leaf area and cutting length were examined to investigate the requirements for rooting stem cuttings of Khaya ivorensis. All these variables were shown to be important factors affecting rooting, confirming the hypothesis that successful rooting can be achieved if these primary variables are optimised.The best concentration of the auxin IBA was found to be 200 g per cutting, which hastened rooting, increased the percentage of cuttings rooted and increased the number of roots per cutting. One clone (8013) was unresponsive to auxins in terms of the percentage of cuttings rooted, but was the most responsive in terms of the numbers of roots per cutting. A greater percentage of cuttings from basal nodes were rooted than from apical nodes. Cuttings cut squarely at the base produced a radially-arranged root system, whereas an oblique cut resulted in a one-sided root system.Trimming the leaf area of cuttings to 10 cm2 gave greater rooting percentages than trimming to 100 cm2. In general, long cuttings (39 mm) rooted better than short cuttings (19 mm), however, there was an interaction between leaf area and cutting length, in which cuttings with short stems and large leaves had the lowest rooting percentage.  相似文献

Abstract

One-year-old Pinus sylvestris donor plants were top-pruned in early May, allowing cuttings of three types to develop: shoots from adventitious buds near the top of the plant (T), weaker shoots from adventitious buds emerging further down the stem (M) and shoots from normal buds on branches (B). Cuttings from 46 half-sib families were collected at the beginning of August, treated with indole-butyric acid, immediately inserted in containers with porous substrate and put in a greenhouse, where soil was heated and high air humidity was maintained. The rooting frequency, estimated by counting living plants 10 months after insertion, was 54%. The family variance component for rooting was small and non-significant, while the clone-within-family component was strongly significant and accounted for 21% of the total random variance. Type M and type B cuttings showed significantly better rooting ability than type T cuttings. Including only plants with at least four acceptable shoots in the propagation experiment, 61% of the potential donor plants remained, without loss of any family. If a more restricted selection criterion was applied, including only plants with at least eight acceptable shoots, 21% remained, with a loss of 13 families. It was concluded that rooting ability of P. sylvestris can be brought to a level that could justify its inclusion in a breeding programme. The lack of family variation was also favourable in this respect, as no families were lost owing to low rooting response. However, the number of suitable cuttings produced by the donor plants needs to be increased.  相似文献

Abstract

This study investigated the role of monoterpenes, a group of chemicals known to be involved in plant defence, in the susceptibility of Sitka spruce [Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.] plants derived from both cuttings and seedlings to attack by the large pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.). Results showed that, given the choice, weevils prefer to feed on the shoots of seedlings than of cuttings and that this preference continued over a period of 6 days, although the overall level of feeding declined. This observation was associated with a higher level of monoterpenes in the shoots from cuttings than in those from seedlings. When the weevils were restricted to the stems and given no choice, levels of damage to the bark were similar in both plant types.  相似文献

Lack of available workforce in motor-manual operations has led to increased interest in mechanized precommercial thinning (PCT) treatments. We evaluated 15 years of growth and yield development of a very dense (27,000 stems ha–1) balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill) and black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) stand after six PCT treatments: (1) motor-manual (MAN), (2) motor-manual with crop tree release (MAN-C), (3) mechanized (MEC), (4) mechanized with residual patches (MEC-P), (5) semi-mechanized (mechanized followed by motor-manual, MEC-S), and (6) unthinned control (CON). Compared to CON, both MAN and MEC-S increased height of balsam fir study trees by 53–56% and diameter at breast height (DBH) by 57–58%. MAN-C and MEC-S increased DBH of black spruce study trees by 15–31% over all other treatments. The proportion of merchantable basal area (BA) was higher in MAN (62%) and MEC-S (56%) than in CON (22%) and MEC (25%), without a reduction in total BA. PCT treatments that provided a uniform distribution of potential crop trees (MAN, MEC-S) performed better than MAN-C and MEC-P, while MEC yielded the poorest responses. Our findings highlight the need to develop new tailored mechanized systems for high wood production and low operational cost.  相似文献

Vegetative propagation techniques are recognized as indispensable tools for mass multiplication of important multipurpose trees adopted in different agroforestry systems. Albizia procera, one among important species, is difficult to propagate commercially either by stem / root cuttings or layering. A study was undertaken to develop procedure for its in vitro regeneration through organogenesis. Explants collected from 15±2 yr-old mature plus trees and from 15 days old juvenile seedlings were regenerated with exogenous application of different hormones. Epicotyl and hypocotyl explants excised from juvenile seedlings showed higher callusing than axillary bud and shoot tip explants derived from mature trees. Benzylaminopurine (BA) at 3 μg/l was most effective, which induced hundred percent callusing in epicotyl and hypocotyl explants in 1/2 Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. Callus originated from axillary buds and apical shoot tips of mature trees failed to form organs, however callus derived from epicotyl and hypocotyl explants proliferated and formed de novo shoots and leaflets. A concentration of 3 μg/l of BA was found effective for shoot proliferation. Shoots grew vigorously in 2 μg/l gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment and rooted in 1/2 MS medium supplemented with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Rooting was most successful on medium supplemented with 6 μg/l IBA alone on which 93.3% of the shoots formed roots. Sand or vermiculite supplemented with 4 ml of yoshida solution proved as best hardening media, which recorded 70-80% survival of plantlets. One year old tissue culture raised plants had comparatively more height, collar diameter, biomass, and root shoot ratio than plants raised from cuttings and seeds of the same age. The procedures enumerated provide a basis for the development of in vitro techniques for rapid multiplication of A. procera. The influence of ortet position on rooting and sprout growth of Populus Rasumowskiana cuttings was studied in the nursery over a period of two years using cuttings from 1-year-old stem shoots and side branches. Apical parts of the plants were not included in the material used in this trial. For branch cuttings, survival decreased with location of the cutting from base to apex; and for stem cuttings, height growth decreased from base to apex. In neigther was the trend significant. As a rule, branch cuttings rooted and grew better than stem cuttings, although the stem cuttings were thicker.  相似文献

Nitrogen mobilization, nitrogen uptake and growth of cuttings obtained from poplar stock plants fertigated with different nitrogen (N) treatments and sprayed with urea in autumn were studied. Stock plants propagated from poplar cuttings were trained to a single shoot and fertigated with 0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 mmol l(-1) N during the first growing season. In October, a subset of stock plants from each N fertigation treatment was sprayed twice with either 3% urea or water, and overwintered outside. In March, total tree biomass and total N concentration and content of stems were estimated for stock plants in each treatment, and cuttings were taken from the middle of each stock plant and stored in plastic bags at 2 degrees C. In mid-April, cuttings were planted in 7.5-l pots containing N-free medium and grown outdoors with a weekly fertigation with nutrient solution containing 0 or 10 mmol l(-1) 15NH4 15NO3. In mid-July, cuttings were harvested, and new shoot (new stems and leaves), shank (old cutting stem) and roots were analyzed for new biomass growth and total N and 15N content. Growth of stock plants was positively related to N supply in the previous growing season. Foliar urea application in autumn had no effect on subsequent stock plant growth even though urea sprays increased both N concentration and content in stem tissues. Biomass growth of cuttings obtained from stock plants was closely related to their N content when the cuttings were grown in an N-free medium regardless of previous treatments applied to the stock plants. When N was supplied in the growth medium, the strength of the relationship between regrowth and N content of cuttings was significantly reduced. Cuttings from stock plants treated with foliar urea and grown in a N-free medium remobilized between 75 and 82% of their total N for new growth, whereas cuttings from plants receiving no urea spray remobilized only between 60 and 69% of their total N for new growth. Current N fertilization of the cuttings reduced the percentage of N remobilized. We conclude that new growth of poplar cuttings in spring was more dependent on currently applied N than on reserve N, and urea N applied as a spray in autumn was more easily remobilized than N taken up by roots during the previous season.  相似文献

By propagating lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) cuttings in vivo, we obtained after 7 growing cycles (ca 3.5 years) in a greenhouse, sufficient number of cuttings from most families to establish clonal progeny tests. Twenty-one full-sib families with approximately 20 clones per family were studied for five years. Years when cuttings were set, families within latitude and clones within families differed significantly in rooting percentages, with the variance components 4.2%, 8.2% and 9.5%, respectively. One way to get a frequent and uniform rooting is to take cuttings from non-leading shoots since they have higher rooting percentage than leading shoots. Neither total length of the cuttings nor length of the primary needles were significantly correlated to rooting percentage. With appropriate management of the ortets and the cuttings during rooting, most clones could be included in a cutting propagation program.  相似文献

实验证明水曲柳1年生插穗的生根率较高,如果能利用少量有限的超级苗资源获得大量1年生萌条,则可增加插穗来源,实现利用扦插技术大量扩繁优良资源的目的.本试验以水曲柳超级苗的平茬桩(仅留1~2个侧芽)和去顶芽桩(仅摘除项芽)为试材,采用激动素(KT)、2,4-二氯苯氧乙酸(2,4-D)、高锰酸钾(KMnO4)、三十烷醇(TA)和诱芽营养剂进行萌芽促进试验,探索获得大量的1年生萌条的途径.结果表明,对水曲柳1年生苗平茬桩,诱芽营养剂的促萌效果相对较好,其次是1 mg/L的KT和5%的KMnO4;对水曲柳1年生去顶芽桩,诱芽营养剂促萌效果较好,1 mg/L和20 mg/L的2,4-D,5 mg/L的KT、TA和2,4-D,1%和5%的KMnO4也有一定效果;对水曲柳2年生苗平茬桩和去顶芽桩,诱芽营养剂萌芽促进效果较好;对2年生苗平茬桩,0.1 mg/L的KMnO4浸泡48 h的促萌效果也较好.总体来看,诱芽营养剂对水曲柳苗桩萌芽促进的应用潜力最大.  相似文献

We determined the effects of removal of leaves, stem axillary buds, or the entire shoot on root suckering (adventitious shoot formation by roots) and basal stem sprouts in 3- and 4-year-old potted seedlings of aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.). The greatest number of root suckers (67.9 +/- 8.5 per plant) emerged after excision of the entire shoot. Defoliated and debudded stems were the major source of inhibitory agents for root suckering, although axillary buds and developing new leaves also exerted a significant inhibitory effect. Removal of mature leaves had only a minor effect on root suckering. Removal of a continuous band of bark (girdling) at the base of the stem consistently stimulated growth of adventitious shoots from the stem below the girdle and occasionally promoted root suckering. Exogenous application of indole-3-acetic acid to excised stumps inhibited root suckering and basal stem sprouting. Naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA), an auxin polar transport inhibitor, had no effect on root suckering or stem sprouting when it was applied to the bark of the basal stem. However, NPA significantly increased root suckering when it was applied to the exposed surface of xylem after girdling. These results suggest that polar transport of auxin in the xylem parenchyma is an important inhibitor of root suckering. On decapitated stems, vacuum extraction of xylem sap from the root system lowered the frequency of root suckering compared with decapitation alone, indicating that substance(s) originating in the root system also play a significant role in controlling root suckering.  相似文献

Leader shoots from juvenile succulent Norway spruce seedlings were used as cuttings 11 weeks after sowing. The seedlings were grown for 6 additional weeks and then apically dominant and lateral shoots were also used as cuttings. These three cutting categories, leaders, dominants and laterals, rooted 99.4, 99.0 and 97.5 % respectively and performed differently with respect to rooting development, number of roots per cutting and response to IBA and PIBA treatments (synthetic auxins). A large individual variation in number of roots per cutting, which auxin treatments did not reduce, was present within each cutting categoty. Laterals from the three different families included in the study showed a different variation than did leaders and dominants. Generally, the juvenile succulent cuttings were easy to root. Seedlings grown at a rather high light intensity (62 W/m2) had the potential to give good rooting even without hormonal treatments.  相似文献

The present study aimed at examining the amenability of Stereospermum suaveolens DC. to vegetative propagation through rooting of leafy stem cuttings using low-cost polythene propagators. Rooting efficiencies of cuttings derived from two selected matured mother trees were studied using four different concentrations of Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), viz. 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4%. IBA applied at 40 μg per cutting (0.4% concentration) resulted in significantly higher rooting responses compared to the control (< 0.05). Differences in the length of longest root for all the treatments were significant (P = 0.05) with cuttings treated with 0.2% IBA producing the longest root. The highest survival after 3 weeks of transference of the rooted cuttings into polythene bags was found for rooted cuttings treated with 0.2% IBA. Effects of three fertilizer treatments viz. T0 (no fertilizer), T1 (10 g of Urea + 20 g of TSP + 10 g of MOP dissolved in 1 l of water) and T2 (10 g of Urea + 20 g of TSP + 10 g of MOP dissolved in 2 l of water) on initial growth of established rooted cuttings (stecklings) of Stereospermum suaveolens in polythene bags were also measured for a period of 90 days. Stem length, collar diameter and leaf area of the stecklings increased throughout the observation period. Increments of both stem length and collar diameter were significantly higher for the stecklings treated with T2 in comparison with the control while increment of leaf area was found the highest for the stecklings treated with T1. The study clearly indicated that Stereospermum suaveolens is amenable to vegetative propagation technique using juvenile single-node leafy cuttings and the initial growth performance of the established rooted cuttings (stecklings) in polythene bags under different fertilizer treatments was satisfactory.  相似文献

This study was designed to test the effects of nitrogen fertilization, photoperiod, cutting type, and clone on root and shoot development of stem cuttings of sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). Differences in the growth of roots and shoots were observed as a result of weekly applications of varying levels of nitrogen (N) fertilization (0, 25, 50, 100, or 200 mg N/liter). As the concentration of N increased, new-shoot dry weight increased, but root dry weight decreased at rates greater than 50 mg N/liter. The percentage of rooted cuttings surviving also decreased as N concentrations increased past 50 mg N/liter. A night-interruption light treatment did not significantly affect survival percentages or the amount of root and shoot growth. Across all treatments, only 46% of all cuttings produced new-shoot growth within a 15-week period following rooting. Cutting type (terminal or sub-terminal) affected rooted cutting development. A higher percentage of terminal cuttings survived and were deemed plantable. In contrast, sub-terminal cuttings produced more shoot and root growth. Differences among clones were observed for all traits measured.Manipulating N fertilization, in conjunction with using clones that propagate well, has the potential of producing rooted cuttings of a size adequate for plantation establishment. However, higher percentages of cuttings that produce new shoot growth shortly after rooting must be achieved.  相似文献
